Life in China challenging – ODION IGHALO

Within a short while in China, Odion Ighalo says he’s enjoying life, culture and food of the East Asian country despite the initial challenge, reports TAIWO ALIMI.

ODION Ighalo, Changchun Yatai of China ‘big boy’, has been talking about his pet project; ‘Ighalo Orphanage Home’ and adapting to new life and culture in China.

The Super Eagles striker joined the Chinese Super League club for a reported £20 million in January of this year and he has settled down nicely netting four goals in 14 appearances.

Though adapting to a new environment and culture has been a challenge, Ighalo admitted he has straightened out properly after the initial goal drought and now enjoys his new home in Eastern Asia.

“It’s not been easy because it’s a new life, new country, new culture and new league but I’m happy all is going on well,” stated the vastly travelled Ighalo who  fired FC Grenada and Watford FC to the La Liga and Premier League during  his goal-rious spell in Spain and England respectively. “ Glory be to God, I’ m happy here in  China because it is a different experience and challenge for me.

“It’s been great so far, all thanks to God, but I’m getting better every day; I’m feeling much better now because of the support I’ve been getting in my club. “Even when the goals were not coming, they kept supporting me because they know what I’m capable of doing.”

The 27-year-old who has previously played in Norway, Italy, and Spain and England said the challenge in China  has been worth his while after captaining Changchun Yatai on different occasions.

He explained: “It was not a difficult decision for me to make (joining Changchun Yatai) particularly when Watford could not make agreement with the other teams (that wanted me) because of the huge amount of money they wanted. It was then I decided it was time to head to Asia.

“Changchun Yatai may not be a big club but they want to achieve something great this season, and I’m ready to help them do better than they did last season.”

Changchun Yatai occupies the 10th position in the China Super League where Mikel Obi and Obafemi Martins also star.

“The Chinese League cannot be compared to EPL but the league is growing and improving,” he reasoned.“It is getting more difficult now though because lots of teams invest in foreign players, so it’s more competitive now.”

Ighalo said he’s enjoying the process of getting acquainted with the Chinese culture: “It is a different lifestyle and culture, compared to England but I love every bit of it. It is a new experience for me.”

The Super Eagles striker said the Chinese love rice as much as Nigerians, hence he tends to indulge as often as he does back at home, disclosing  that he has started taking classes to improve his mastery of the language.

He revealed: “Well, they have lots of food and almost like Nigeria, they eat lots of rice here, so that’s not bad for me because I love rice a lot. It is a bit difficult with the language but I am trying my best to blend in.

“I just started a Chinese class with a private teacher three times a week to learn the language so as to ease things up for me. I can speak Italian and Spanish fluently well, so I am learning the Chinese language too.”

Born and bred in the famous Lagos ghetto, Ajegunle, Ighalo has a heart of gold and is touched by the plight of the under-privileged. “If you ask me what makes me happy, I will tell you that it is my family: wife and kids. I also derive joy from making and seeing people happy. It gives me joy.”

Little wonder he started the ‘Ighalo Orphanage Home’ on which he has spent lots of money. “I am planning the launching of the home in December after the football season. For now, I have no beneficiary. I’m running it on my own and with my money, I thank God for grace and strength to do it up to this level and hopefully after the launching we can get sponsors or people who can help to give the kids better life.” Continuing, he said the orphanage located at Kudeyindu Estate in Ijegun, Lagos, will cater to motherless children from different backgrounds.

He said it is also a way to show his appreciation for what God has done for him. “I thank God for the journey so far because I’m not the best or better person but the grace of God has taken me beyond my imagination and I’m grateful to all who played a part including my fans worldwide.  I like to listen to praise and worship songs too.”

Even in China, Ighalo has identified with the orphanage while spreading his apostle of catering for the disadvantaged.

In June, he visited an orphanage in China and shared pictures of his visit to the young boys at one of the orphanage homes in China on his social handles.

Ighalo noted that he had fun with the boys as they even played football together.

While he is one of the highest paid Nigerian football players, Ighalo had a tough rise to stardom and this has made him continually reach out to those that are disadvantaged.

He is of the strong belief too that his humble beginning is an inspiration to many Nigerian and African kids. He recently wrote on his Instagram page while posting two pictures of himself as a teenager in Ajegunle and now as a successful professional in China.

He wrote: “From Ajegunle to the world, I serve a living God; this is me 11 years ago. Those earrings are not earrings; I could not even afford to buy earrings. What you are seeing are tape – (plaster).

“I am a testimony, I knew with God everything is possible. I was just holding on to my God, my high school girlfriend left me then because I had nothing to offer her. ”But I had God and I had a dream; never give up on your dream. The same God that elevated me shall elevate you.

“Hold on to him and trust his timing. I am a testimony, you are a testimony, put God first and it’s all done Amen.”

AFCON Qualifiers: Mikel, Ighalo’s absence won’t make difference -Fuludu

A former international, Edema Fuludu, says the absence of Mikel Obi and Odion Ighalo will not make any difference in the Super Eagles formation when they play South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Sunday.

The Eagles will host the South African national team at Uyo in the ongoing qualifiers for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be staged by Cameroon.

Fuludu, a member of the victorious 1994 AFCON squad, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the coach, Genort Rohr, had reasons for not playing them.

NAN reports that the captain of the team, Mikel, and striker Ighalo, will be missing in action in the qualifying match against Banana Banana of South Africa on June 11.

“The truth is that whether they are present or not, the show must go on and it’s important that we don’t disrupt the current formation of the players.

“They have won their matches back to back which has shown that they are making progress; the technical adviser has an approach to each match.

“I’m sure there are still roles that they can play and also remembering that Mikel has an injury.

“Contrary to speculations that the choice of the location of their clubs maybe a hindrance, everyone has a fair chance of playing in the team,’’ he said.

Fuludu, a former central defender, said that one of the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) mandates to Rohtr Gohr is to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the Nations Cup.

“How he chooses to go about the qualifiers is totally up to him to a large extent.

“He has a target and in his projection, he must have been able to analyse the players that fit into his plans.

“So, it’s totally up to him, their absence is not a snub whatsoever, we know they are experienced players, we can’t take that away from them,’’ he said.

On his expectations, the former Manager of Warri Wolves FC, told NAN that the match won’t be a walk in the park.

“The thing is that in as much as this match is crucial to us, we must tie all loose ends; there is no luxury for slips, we need to take our chances.

“It’s key that they play as a team, also they should play according to instruction and they should use their discretion when necessary,’’ he said.

NAN reports that Group B of the competition consists of Nigeria, Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon.

Ighalo brace fails to save Yatai, Martins celebrates.

Super Eagles ace Odion Ighalo was in superlative form for his Chinese Super League club Changchun Yatai on Saturday, grabbing a brace which however did not stop the side from losing 2-3 to visiting Shanghai Shenhua.

Ighalo was in action for 73 minutes in a match in which compatriot Obafemi martins was in action for full 90 minutes for the opposing side. Visiting Shanghai Shenhua had shot into the lead in the 18th minute through Fredy Guarin who enjoyed a timely assist from Junmin Xu.

The lead was however cancelled in the 40th minute after Shuai Li fouled Ighalo to hand the Nigerian an opportunity to convert a penalty and earn an equaliser. Another opportunity came for Ighalo in the 50th minute when teammate and Brazilian import Marinho provided a perfect cross which the former Watford forward did not hesitate to bury. Martins and his teammates however rallied round to level up two minutes later thanks to Cao Yunding.

The sweet brace was however not without pain as Ighalo was subsequently injured forcing medical attention and his replacement in the 73rd minute by Zhenyu Du. His exit became a blessing in disguise for the visitors who grabbed a third goal when Giovanni Andres Moreno converted a scintillating pass from Obafemi martins in the 88th minute.

The defeat leaves Changchun Yatai bottom of the league with just one point from five games while Shanghai Shenhua are 6th on the log with seven points. Argentina international Carlos Tevez who was impressive in 4-0 drubbing of Jiangsu Suning in the season opener was not listed in Saturday’s tie.

  • ODION IGHALO- My unforgettable moments in English Premier League

ODION IGHALO- My unforgettable moments in English Premier League

Odion Jude Ighalo scored an impressive 39 goals in 100 appearances during his exciting stint with English Premier League side, Watford.  The 27-year-old Nigerian international speaks about his unforgettable moments in the EPL as well as his adventure in the Chinese Super League, reports MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN.

It is no longer news that Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, unexpectedly moved to the Chinese Super League side Changchun Yatai F.C. from the English Premier League (EPL) for a reported fee of £27 Million during the January transfer window. The Nigerian joined Watford then campaigning in the Nationwide League on a season-long loan deal from Udinese in 2014 and he spent an amazing three years with the Hornets where he helped the modest side secure promotion as well as scoring 39 goals in 100 appearances.

Born in Lagos where his career took off before moving to Watford’s partner club Udinese in 2008, Ighalo’s first real break came when he moved to Spain with Granada–who also have links with Watford–and he scored 35 goals over two loan spells.  He joined Watford initially on loan at the beginning of the season before making the deal permanent thereafter.

But in an exclusive conversation from his base in China, Ighalo has finally shared his best moments in the EPL, saying two events would forever remain indelible in his memory.

“I have a lot of great memories playing in the English Premier League with Watford,” Ighalo told The Nation Sport & Style, “but I will never forget our promotion day to the EPL and the day I scored my first EPL goal.”

Ighalo’s first EPL goal actually came on August 8, 2015 after he came on as a second half substitute for José Manuel Jurado 16 minutes from time and putting the visitors ahead 2–1 in an eventual 2–2 draw away against Everton for the season opener.

He later netted twice in a 2–0 home win over West Ham United on October 31, reaching seven goals for the season and becoming the highest club scorer in the competition after just 11 matches.

Ighalo on December 20, 2015 scored in a Watford victory for the fourth consecutive time, netting a brace in a 3–0 win over Liverpool. His five-goal haul earned him December’s Premier League Player of the Month, while his then manager Quique Sánchez Flores won the equivalent award.

But he suffered some setback at the start of the season and eventually broke a 599-minute personal scoring drought March 13 2016, with a goal in a 2–1 win against Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup which got the Hornets into the last four for the first time in nine years. He scored just one league goal at the start of the new season and did not find the net in any of his last 15 games prior to his departure.

His transfer from England to China on the transfer deadline in January came as a rude shock but the well the well-travelled 27-year-old said he was happy leaving England for China

“I am happy going to China because it is a different experience and challenge for me,” he stated.

The 27-year-oldwho has previously played in Norway, Italy, and Spain explained he was ready for the challenges in the Far East where he has twice captained Changchun Yatai in their opening two Chinese Super League matches.

He continued: “Of course, I’m prepared for the challenges in China. Yes, I agree with you that it is adventure but I have an open mind and prepare the same way I did when I was going to all those other countries (Norway, Spain and Italy) without knowing anything about them.”

He said Watford made it easier for him to decide on joining the train to China where the Chinese Super League has now become a Mecca of some sort with many international stars including his compatriots – Brown Ideye, Mikel Obi and Obafemi Martins – in the Super League.

“It was not a difficult decision for me to make (joining Changchun Yatai) particularly when Watford could not make agreement with the other teams (that wanted me) because of the huge amount of money they wanted; it was then I decided it was time to head to Asia,” he revealed.

For those who have been following Ighalo on the social media, he is having the fun of his life in China with frequent up loads of many sceneries from skyscrapers and Chinese cuisines on a daily basis as he settles down in his new environment.

“Changchun Yatai may not be a big club,” admitted Ighalo. “But they want to achieve something great this season; and I’m ready to help my team do better than they did last season.”

As part of his adaptation to the new environment, he has already excused himself from Super Eagles’ upcoming international friendly matches against Senegal and Burkina Faso in London

“I agreed with the coach (Gernot Rohr) that I need to settle down and play games here (China),” he stated.

There was so much frenzy following Ighalo’s move to China with revelations that he was going to earn a whopping £200,00 per week in wages but the guy who grew up in the Ajegunle ghetto in Lagos said he would never forget his humble beginning hence his love for charitable gestures.

“I would say a lot of my income would go into my charity which I have been doing even before now,” he said. “My orphanage home which is in Lagos is almost ready. I have been doing that before and would do even more now. I would most likely open the orphanage home in November or December.”

The orphanage home aptly called ‘Ighalo Orphanage Home’ is located at Kudeyindu Estate in Ijegun, Lagos and it was almost 90% completed from the photos the former Watford striker shared on his Twitter and Instagram.

Ighalo, in the meantime, has been described as one of the most trusted Nigerian players to deal with by FIFA agent Atta Aneke in a recent interview posted by soccer website, scorenigeria.com.ng.

“I am very proud of Odion Ighalo, who I have worked with since 2007,” he said. “There is also Daniel Chima Chukwu and Chukwuma Akabueze and some agents are surprised because they hear of Nigerian players switching agents every year; If you are honest and transparent, they see that you really care and don’t see them as a way to make money, then I believe they will be loyal.”

    Appreciative Ighalo writes Watford fans

Super Eagles forward and Chinese Super League new import Odion Ighalo has written an open letter to his Watford fans thanking them for making his stay at the Vicarage Road a worthwhile.

Ighalo who accepted a last minute £22million move to Chinese Super League side Changchun Yatai thanked Watford fans for believing in him and appreciating his efforts while at the club.  He also thanked them and the club for bearing with him at moments when all did not appear to go well. “A special thanks to Watford fans who I really hold dearly in my heart because they supported me since the very first day I came to the club, to the last day,” he said

Ighalo, 27, has been pursued by Chinese Super League clubs in the past three transfer windows but consistently rejected moves away from the Premier League. Even an initial £38m Shanghai SIPG bid was turned down by the former Granada ace who had earlier played for Lyn and Udinese respectively.

The new deal will see him earn about £200,000 per week.

The Nigerian forward hit 15 goals in his first season in the Premier League last year, an effort which helped the club avoid relegation, but his exploits this season has been less successful with a goal drought that stretches back to September 10 and his only strike of 2016-17 in the Premier League

Watford have already signed M’Baye Niang on loan from AC Milan and Mauro Zarate for £2.5m for Fiorentina to boost their striking options in the campaigns ahead.

Yatai who were 12th-place finishers in last year’s 16-team CSL, are optimistic they coming of the Nigerian international will further boost their chances of posting a better standing on the log this season.

Prior to grabbing the opportunity another Chinese club, Shanghai Shenhua, had tinkered with the idea of pairing Ighalo with Carlos Tevez, the world’s highest-paid player on £600,000-a-week.

Ighalo West Brom swap deal fails

Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo planned move to West Brom has hit the rocks following Stoke City’s last minute signing of Saido Berahino.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has never hidden his admiration for the Nigerian international and was hoping to a swap Burundi born Berahino who has been itchy to leave West Brom for Ighalo.

Last night made all the difference as Berahino ended his Hawthorns hell hitting   the jackpot when he signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at Stoke City worth £70,000 a week.

Stoke moved to sign the unsettled West Bromwich Albion striker, 23, for an initial £12million fee rising to £15m if he meets performance targets.

Albion had rejected Stoke’s first offer but a breakthrough in negotiations came at around 2pm on Friday.

England Under 21 star Berahino, who was a Tottenham target in 2015, has hardly played for two seasons and because of fitness issues was recently sent to a training camp in France. Yet Stoke chiefs soon agreed personal terms.

Berahino is desperate to kick-start his once promising career and was named by Roy Hodgson in an England squad in 2014.

West Brom had earlier tinkered with £17 million switch with Watford for Ighalo but also believed that a swap would have made the deal easier. But with Stoke signing of Berahino for a reported fee of £12million fee rising to £15m, West Brom may need to look for extra £5m to beef up the bid.

Ighalo has only netted twice in all competitions this season after rattling in 17 goals last season. He got a mouth watering offer for China move which he turned down.  West Brom’s coach Tony Pulis is however reportedly still interested in the 27 year old former Granada ace

The striker has been heavily linked with a move to China already this transfer window, with similar speculation surrounding him last summer, Owngoalnigeria.com reports.

A move to the Black Country would be much closer to home and reports said the deal could be as much as £17m.

Ighalo has been at Vicarage Road for two and a half years since joining from Udinese, scoring 33 times in 91 appearances.

  • Watford 2-1 Leicester: Musa plays for 12 mins, Ighalo missing

Watford 2-1 Leicester: Musa plays for 12 mins, Ighalo missing

Super Eagles forward, Ahmed Musa was in action for just 12 minutes as Premier league defending champions, Leicester City failed in their bid to earn away point Saturday.

Musa just back from international break where he contributed in no small measure to Eagles defeat of Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers, was ushered in 12 minutes to the end of match with the visitors already 2-1 down.

Compatriot Odion Ighalo was however an unused substitute for Watford.

Etienne Capoue had shot the homers into the lead in the first minute of the match with teammate and Argentine import Roberto Pereyra increasing the tally 11 minutes later.

Leicester’s consolation goal came in the 15th minute thanks to a penalty converted by Algerian international Riyad Mahrez who incidentally scored Algeria’s only goal in 3-1 loss to Nigeria November 12 at the Nest of Champions.

Musa who came in as replacement for homeboy Marc Albrighton could not remedy the situation but ensured that Leicester maintained their 58 to 48 possession ratio to the end.

The result left Leicester in 14th position on 12 points only two above the relegation zone, as their poor away run continued with a fifth defeat in six games.

It was however double delight for Nigerian international Victor Anichebe as he grabbed two goals in 22 minutes to ensure Sunderland 3-0 win over visiting Hull City.  Teammate Jermaine Defoe had grabbed the first goal in the 34th minute before Anichebe took over finding the net in the 62nd and 84th minutes respectively.
