  • 10 years after, church, relations, others remember Odukoya

The sprawling auditorium of Fountain of Life Church Ilupeju, Lagos wore a beautiful look last Sunday.

Everyone was gorgeously dressed and in high spirit as family members, associates and close relations remembered Pastor (Mrs.) Bimbo Odukoya, who died in the ill-fated Sosoliso Plane from Abuja-Port-Harcourt exactly 10 years ago.

To lighten up the mood, her children Jimi and Tomi served as comperes.

They cracked jokes with her mannerisms and ways of life, saying living with her was so much fun and impactful.

They were smiles instead of tears; fond memories as against regrets and thanksgivings in place of depression.

Those who spoke during the tribute sessions described her as a warm, kind-hearted, compassionate and faithful preacher whose life was consistent with her sermons.

Her Sister-in-law, Mrs. Bola Orekoya (Nee Odukoya) recalled meeting the enigmatic marriage counsellor in 1982.

The deceased, she testified, led her to Christ in 1984 following years of living with her.

Describing Odukoya as an incredible soul winner, Orekoya said: “She was lovely but firmly against sins and compromises. She’d do anything for Christ.”

She said they lived as sisters so much so that many thought her brother, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, is a brother-in-law.

    “I couldn’t have had a better Sister-in-law,” she stressed.

Mrs. Bola Segun-Williams, who is married to the late Odukoya’s brother, said: “She was the most stress less sister-in-law in the world.

“I see her every day in my husband; I see her every day in my children. I still dream about her at least once in a week. I pledge to continue the works she started.”

Her sister, Lara, said: “Despite being the first of the family, my sister was my mentor. She radiated life and warmth. Her life was exemplary.”

Pastor Ghandi Olaoye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG) Jesus House, United States of America recalled how he pulled a surprise by ensuring the late Odukoya attended and preached at the 40th birthday of his wife.

“She was my wife’s role model. My wife hardly admires people that much. When she attended the birthday, my wife considered it the best gift for the occasion.”

One of her A’level classmates at the Federal Girls College, Ijaniki Lagos, Pastor Yemisi, recalled how Pastor Bimbo, as she was fondly called, had always been elegant and admirable.

“She was the first to give her life to Christ. When she did, she stopped partying with us and started praying for our salvation,” she began.

She reeled out tales of how the deceased convinced the other four ladies to give their lives, stating “Bimbo lives in my heart and life.”

Pastor Tayo Omotosho, who was one of the last persons to bid her farewell en route the ill-fated flight in Abuja, recalled how Pastor Bimbo radiated so much life and encouraged her to read Mathew 6:33 as she boarded.

Her husband, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, said his consolation was that Bimbo left a legacy of righteousness and peace.

He recalled how she casually said she would rather die first just few months before her demise, saying the trauma of living as a widow would shatter her life.

Her first child, Tolu, literally brought down the house when she rendered some of Pastor Bimbo’s favourite gospel songs and compositions.

Odukoya: Providing safe environments for kids

Burdened by the various abuses children face, Mrs. Nomthi Odukoya, has taken up the challenge to be a voice for kids and offer them skills for safety, productivity and positive childhood. Sunday Oguntola Reports

It began in faraway South Africa. As a teacher, Miss Nomthi took more than passing interest in her pupils. Their wellbeing was utmost to her. A pupil once had dire financial need. Her education was threatened by lack. And Nomthi mobilised other teachers to raise money for her.

Unfortunately before they could, she had relocated to the United Kingdom. “I remember her case every time and ask God to forgive me because she could have been out of life or something,” she said.

Though she couldn’t help that hapless kid, Mrs. Nomthi Odukoya now has a chance to positively impact millions of her likes. Last week, her passion for kids got a massive boost. She launched her Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Funda Wazi, which means ‘learn and know’ in Zulu.

The launch of the foundation also coincided with the public presentation of her second book A bully is not an hero. The first, No…Don’t touch me there has become a classic for helping children deal with sexual molestation and abuse.

It received rave reviews and wide acceptance among kids, policy-makers, care-givers, guardians and parents. Those who fell in love with the book inundated the South-African born wife of Senior Pastor of Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, with speech invitations.

According to her: “When people started asking for the book in different languages, I knew I was in trouble…but good trouble.”

A bully is not a hero seeks to discourage bullying among children. It arms kids with skills to tackle bullies and disabuses their minds from bullying others. Mrs. Odukoya said such intervention becomes imperatives to provide a safe, prosperous environment for the positive development of children.

The foundation, she explained, “will develop child-friendly resources and tools to equip children and adults in ensuring children’s safety and wellbeing.”

She added: “My vision is that this organisation will produce resources and tools that will be a conversation starter on many difficult topics; serve as an encouragement for children that do not know what to do in difficult situations; provide learning aids for educators; and tools for action for advocates and policy makers.”

Speaking on her passion for kids, Odukoya said: “I have always worked with children. I am fascinated by the way their minds work and the wisdom they exhibit even at young ages. Their smiles, energy, trusting nature and optimistic outlook symbolise the best in humanity.

Adults, she stated, are the ones that can address challenges facing children because they created them in the first place. “We have a responsibility to create safe environments for all children to learn, play, pray and sleep. Children should never be concerned about anything apart from being children and having healthy, productive childhoods,”

  • Odukoya’s wife’s book for launch

Nomthi, the South African wife of Taiwo Odukoya, the Senior Pastor of Fountain of Life Church, Lagos, will today launch her book titled ‘Funda Wazi’ (a bully is not a hero).

The book, according to the author, is a capacity-building mechanism on how children, guardians, parents and care-givers can protect kids against bullies.

Nomthi, who coordinates her Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) to tackle abuses and other challenges facing children, said the book will ‘teach, guide and protect children so they can grow to be responsible and balanced adults’.

She said Funda Wazi, which means Learn and Know in her Zulu tongue, will be involved in activities aimed at protecting the right and dignity of children.

Mrs. Odukoya said she was particularly concerned that child abuse is assuming a dangerous trend in the society.

The situation, she said, “must be arrested to ensure the physical, social, emotional and mental wellbeing of our future leaders.”

The NGO, according to her, will engage in advocacy and seek to influence policies, practices and processes that affect children.

Children-friendly resources, Nomthi added, will be produced to increase the capacity of children and the society to defend them.

  • Pastor Odukoya’s daughter in marital bliss

A wedding ceremony that boasts A -list guests, sumptuous local and international meals, choice drinks and impressive gifts for new couple is nothing but a huge success. So it was for Tolu, the amiable daughter of Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, the Senior Pastor of the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos and her heartthrob, Olumide Ijogun. The two exchanged marital vows at the church last Saturday.

The reception, which held at the upscale events place, Haven, drew a perfect blend of guests ranging from clergymen and technocrats to industrialists and young professionals who see the bride’s father as a role model. The couple’s love story spans close to 10 years. They were high school lovers and were very close all through. Olumide later studied a computer-related course while Toluwani did business-related courses in the United States of America and Nigeria. Both are currently doing well in their respective fields. Olumide works at Honeywell Group, a company owned by popular industrialist, Oba Otudeko. Toluwani is the brand manager for Lucozade Sport.
