Offa Poly unveils indigenous electric vehicle

The Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, has unveiled an indigenous electric vehicle, named  OKIN EV1.

The invention, the institution’s Director of the Directorate of Assembly, Fabrication, and Commercialization of Research Products, Dr. Olufemi O. Kehinde, said, signalled a bold step forward in the country’s quest for sustainable mobility.

Kehinde, who spoke through the institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Olayinka Iroye, noted that the vehicle also showcased the ingenuity of homegrown research and engineering.

“This is proof that Nigeria has the capacity to lead in innovative solutions to global challenges,” the statement added.

The OKIN EV1 is not just another automobile; it is a symbol of what Nigerian institutions can achieve when knowledge meets creativity, the school added.

Iroye said: “The Polytechnic has already announced plans to refine the prototype and explore avenues for mass production, which could place affordable, eco-friendly vehicles in the hands of everyday Nigerians.

“Powered fully by electricity and complemented with a solar-energy feature, the vehicle is capable of covering an impressive 125 kilometres on a single charge, the equivalent of a round trip from Offa to Ilorin.

“The EV is equipped with modern features that meet today’s demands: touchscreen display for real-time monitoring and control.

“(It has a) Reverse camera for enhanced safety and convenience, and a solar-powered extension system to prolong driving hours.

“These features place the OKIN EV1 in the league of practical, eco-friendly vehicles designed to address both urban and rural mobility needs.

“The journey of the OKIN EV1 began in 2024 and was completed in less than six months. Despite challenges in sourcing materials locally, the development team’s determination paid off, producing what many have called a game changer for Nigeria’s transport industry.

“This ground-breaking feat would not have been possible without the vision and support of the Polytechnic’s Rector, Engr. Dr. Kamoru Oluwatoyin Kadiri, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE). His unwavering encouragement, passion for research, and commitment to providing an enabling environment for innovation have inspired the institution’s scholars and inventors to reach this remarkable milestone.

“With the unveiling of the OKIN EV1, the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, has set the stage for a future where locally made technologies can compete globally.

“The feat is not only a victory for the institution but also a shining example for Nigeria’s academic and industrial communities.”

Offa Poly dispels alleged N500m accreditation fraud

The management of Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State has dispelled the allegation of N500million accreditation fraud levelled against the institution.

The management through its Head, Information and Public Relations Unit, Olayinka Iroye, in a statement yesterday described the allegation as misleading and unfair to the institution’s reputation built over the years.

Iroye noted that the institution was scheduled for the accreditation of 61 programmes against 21 claimed and reported by a media outlet (not The Nation).

He explained that “the ₦500 million in question was only a proposed budget, collated by the Director of Academic Planning at the request of Management for presentation to the Governing Council, as required by due process.

“The initial submissions from various departments for the forthcoming accreditation exercise amounted to approximately N900 million. However, in line with the polytechnic’s well-known tradition of financial prudence and accountability, this figure was meticulously reviewed and significantly reduced to about N500 million without compromising the quality and standards required for the exercise.”

He said of the N500m, over N300 million had been earmarked for the purchase of modern, high-quality equipment spread across all academic departments.

“These include Engineering Technology, Applied Sciences, Food Technology, Mass Communication, Computer Science Technology, Management Studies and other relevant fields. This strategic investment will not only meet the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) accreditation requirements, but will also strengthen the polytechnic’s teaching, learning and research capabilities for years to come.”

He continued: “Statutory accreditation fees will be fully paid as mandated by the NBTE. The remaining funds will cover essential logistics, such as transportation, hotel accommodation, feeding, and other necessary arrangements for the 85 NBTE-appointed Resource Persons who will be visiting the Polytechnic to conduct the rigorous accreditation exercise.

“When these figures are carefully broken down, it becomes evident that the budget is neither excessive nor wasteful. On the contrary, it reflects a balanced, well-considered, and responsible approach to meeting accreditation needs while ensuring the judicious use of public resources.

“We remain focused on our mandate of producing skilled, competent and morally upright graduates, and will not be distracted by unfounded allegations.”

The businessman also acknowledged the monarch’s pivotal role in promoting harmony among diverse groups in Upenmen, fostering an environment where development projects and community-driven initiatives had thrived.

“Oba Ogunmolasuyi’s reign has been a blessing to Upenmen and beyond. His ability to unite people and champion progress is a legacy that will endure.”

Eleduma prayed for the monarch’s continued good health, divine wisdom and strength to lead Upenmen to greater heights, and expressed optimism that Olupenmen’s reign would continue to inspire positive transformation and bring prosperity to the community for many years to come.

The businessman called on Upenmen indigenes at home and in the diaspora to support their traditional ruler and back his vision for a more prosperous and united community.

In a statement, Olayinka Iroye, Head, Public Relations and Protocols at the institution, debunked claims about the cause of death of the ND 1 student of Civil Engineering.

The statement reads: “The deceased, an ND 1 student of Civil Engineering actually took some quantity of poisonous substance which led to his death days after he was taken to several hospitals for treatment.

  • Offa Poly suspends two students for alleged cultism

Management of Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Offa local government of Kwara state said it has suspended two students of the institution suspected to be cult members.

The names of the students include Tajudeen Selim and Temitope Omotosho.

The state police command had early in the week paraded some students of the polytechnic for alleged involvement in cult activities.

Management added that before the students were paraded by the police, it reported the incidence of forceful initiation to security agencies based on the complaint lodged by the student who was forcefully initiated.

“The management wishes to state unequivocally that cases of cultism have been a thing of past in the institution as the new management under Dr. Lateef Ademola Olatunji had purged the institution of all forms of cultism, gangsterism and other anti social vices since he came on board as Rector in 2017.

“Other offences such as examination malpractices, sexual harassment are also gross misconduct at the Polytechnic which attract outright expulsion from the institution. Students found culpable are equally handed over to the law enforcement agents for prosecution.

“The management, through its directorate of students’ affairs has put a lot of measures in place to checkmate cultism with the introduction of the use of security form for newly admitted students; regular sensitization of students where they are admonished to steer clear of cultism, hooliganism and other forms of social menace.

“And that they should be of good conduct everywhere they are in order to ensuring peaceful co-existence within and outside the polytechnic campuses and maintaining harmonious relationship with other colleagues and the host communities.

Since then, the students union executives and other students have been well behaved and have not been found wanting both in character and
    learning.

It is on record that the Polytechnic enjoys a serene atmosphere, peace and tranquility than ever before.

“It was likely because of the institution’s zero tolerance for cultism and stern sanctions on offenders who contravene and breach the rule that led the suspects to have taken themselves outside Offa to perpetrate the acts.”

Scores of students and Offa community members lost their lives to the bloody fracas that erupted between Offa and the polytechnic communities in May 2000. Also property worth millions of Naira was destroyed during the crisis.

The bloody brawl was as a result of the restriction of the movement and accommodation of the students to some sections of the community.

Their sacrifices were what gave birth to freedom and liberty that we are enjoying today. It appears to be a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

“It is more than necessary for us to mourn our martyrs of freedom and liberty. They are sacrificial lambs of liberty. These heroes are dead. They died for liberty. Though they are gone their memories shall continue to linger in our minds. You were murdered in cold blood; you sacrificed your lives for us to live and gave up your lives to give us liberty. We are celebrating your heroic decision to give us freedom today.”

  • Offa Poly to ICPC: recover our N67m ‘mismanaged’ by trustees

•’They’ve started deducting from our salaries’

Seven hundred and seventy-one members of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, Staff Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society (CTCS), have urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to recover the N67 million allegedly mismanaged by past trustees of the society.

The members accused former president, treasurer and secretary (trustees) of giving out N90 million loans indiscriminately.

The former trustees are Folorunsho, Adekunle Samson and Salami Nurudeen.

Addressing members at its annual general meeting, the President, Dr. Ademola Ebeloku, said the lack of fiscal probity by past executives necessitated the invitation of ICPC officials to the institution in May.

He added: “Efforts of the present executives have proved futile because the invitation of ICPC to this institution in May has yielded no result. We are using this medium to inform ICPC chairman that the society is eager to get report on this matter.”

The Chairman, Implementation Committee on the Recovery of Mismanaged Funds, Dr. Emiola Olawale, said: “During investigation, we discovered money was missing.’’

‘’There was misappropriation of over N90 million. During investigation, it was discovered they gave people excess loans.

“We don’t know how to categorise that. But it was discovered the trustees; the president, the secretary and the treasurer gave themselves loans, which they cannot account for. No form was filled. At the end of investigation, the amount of money was put against them and they were asked to refund. They agreed to repay the money, but we could not get the money from their salary.

“That was what prompted us to go to EFCC and it directed us to ICPC. ICPC eventually came here and they looked at our books. They said we were lenient in the way we investigated it. That there was some money. That if they were to investigate, it would have been more than that amount of money. So at the end of the day, they did investigation, we expected a report from them. Till now, we have not heard anything.”

Reacting to the allegation on behalf of others, a man, simply identified as Wasiu said ICPC officials came and checked his exco’s records.

“The commission invited us and spent about three days with us, investigating. They went through our books. They said it was due to our negligence. That we should repay the money. We agreed and gave them an undertaking that we would pay N100,000 monthly and that when I finish repaying my First Bank loan, I will pay N200,000 monthly. They said I should bring a surety, which I did and they collected his international passport. I did not defraud the cooperative. I have been repaying them the money I did not spend,” he added.

Wasiu attributed their ordeal to a member of the society and a worker of the institution, who played a fast one on exco members.

Said he: “We were buying cars for members and other businesses. In the course of the business, there was a man, who is also a worker. He came to my office and said he knew about the business and that he wanted us to do it. That he had a brother in London who sent cars to him. That he would bring the cars to the school premises and that people bought cars from him. He asked workers to write out specifications of the cars they wanted to buy, supported with evidence of ability to pay. That was the pay slip. We set up a committee, which screened members. We then asked him to supply the cars to some of the successful members.”

Wasiu added: “When we got the cars, some of them did not match the specifications. Some, instead of automatic gears, had manual gears. So some of our members rejected them. That money was over N10 million at that time.

He said he would bring other cars for us. We believed him since he was a worker, not knowing he was lying. While we were pursuing that, a supplier came from Osogbo and said the cars supplied to us, the man collected them from him and that he owed them about N10 million. That we should pay. They said if we did not pay, they would arrest us and collect the cars from our members.

“We did not want him to tarnish our image.

“We contacted our worker, who supplied the cars. He said the allegation was true. We said we had to pay the people, but he ran away. When the problem started, the congress of our cooperative got to know of it. The congress appointed members to find out what happened during the period of my stewardship. They said the worker, who supplied the cars, had gone with the cooperative money. That it was due to our negligence. That the trustee would be responsible for the money. I said if this is the price of leadership, we will pay. So they transferred the liabilities to us.

“When they asked us how we were going to pay, I said I had a building and that I was already having First Bank loan, which was collected by many workers. That I will finish repayment this month. I told them that as soon as I finish repayment, I will increase my repayment from N100,000 to  N200,000. I gave the President the letter since two weeks ago to increase my loan repayment to N200,000 and increase my savings from N5,000 to N10,000 monthly. I gave them the documents of my houses so that they can sell the house, but they said they will not sell the property of a member. I told them that if I sell it, I will bring the money.”
