  • Nembe slam Ondo match officials

GLO Premier League side, Nembe City have labeled Thursday’s Federation Cup match officials from Ondo State as killed joy.

The City Boys lost to the Cup defending champions, Enyimba Int’l 1-2 inside the Akure Township stadium as they bowed out of this year competition in the Round of 16.

The set of match officials appointed by the Ondo State FA were woeful as they handed victory to the Aba side.

Awofeari S.O was appointed the center referee, Awosaki I.O and Raji K.T were assistant referees while FIFA Badge referee, Henry Ogunyamodi was the reserve referee.

“At Nembe City its not our style to complain about officiating after a game, but the devilish act from the Ondo State referees was annoying, media officer of the City Boys, Gbenga Adeleye told Naijasportscentre.com.

“They were killed joy, even disappointed their profession. Football should be a fair game but so sad the referees are not helping our game to grow.

“After the game one of our players told me the referee said he is not aware they are playing a big team? What does that speak about our referees,” Adeleye queried.

  • Seminar for elected officials

    Seminar for elected officials

In a bid to instill leadership principles in the newly-elected officers in Anambra, the Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs. Enemo Azuka has organised a seminar for council chairmen, their deputies and councillors. The seminar was in partnership with Anambra Rebirth led by Dr Okey Ikechukwu.

The inaugural retreat on values and leadership was held on January 24 at the Women Development Centre, Awka. Its theme was “Call to Service: Re-inventing Leadership and Local Government Administration in Anambra State.

The event was chaired by retired Chief Judge of the state, Justice G. U. Ononiba.

In attendance at the event were the Governor-elect, Chief Willie Obiano, his deputy Dr Nkem Okeke, all traditional rulers and Presidents-General in the state as well as Governor Peter Obi who was accompanied by members of the state Executive Council led by Secretary to the State Government, Oseloka Obaze.

In his remarks, Governor Obi said two major challenges which the Nigerian society is experiencing were insults on those in leadership positions and disloyalty. He noted that those who think they were hurting the personality of President Jonathan by unnecessarily attacking and criticising him were invariably hurting the feelings of Nigerians.

According to him, what is lacking in Anambra’s and Nigerian politics is loyalty.

“Some think that they are hurting the personality of President Goodluck Jonathan but their action is, in essence, hurting Nigerians,” Obi said.

He urged the elected council chairmen and councillors to partner with and support government’s policies and programmes; even as he urged them to work towards lifting the well-being of the people who elected them into office.

Governor Obi urged the councillors-elect in the 21 local government areas of the state to be team players with their chairmen rather than scheming for their impeachment, adding that he is pitying his successor, Chief Willie Obiano who will, on March 17, assume office as governor of Anambra State. This, he said, is because Anambra people will blame him for everything that goes wrong in the state whether he is responsible or not.

He said he would take time to rest from the busy schedules of administering the state for eight years after he hands over to Obiano. He added that Obiano will, however, be lucky that he (Obi) has done some jobs in the state and would have to start from somewhere.

“When I was sworn in as the governor in 2006, there was nowhere to start from. I asked them where the governor’s office was and they said there was none. I enquired about where I will live and govern and they said none. Even this place was burnt down and to make matters worse, there was no one to hand over to me.” Obi said.

He called on the elected chairmen, vice-chairmen and councillors to ensure that they provide benefits of democracy to the people of their localities.

Governor-elect Chief Willie Obiano was service-ready as he adopted the teachings of all the speakers.

Earlier in his address, the chairman of the occasion, Justice Godwin Ononiba (rtd) said that the seminar was designed to sensitise the elected chairmen and councillors on the right values for service.

“You are reminded that you are now addressed as honourables and you must therefore understand that it means good name, reputation and nobleness of mind. I have never seen this kind of seminar before in my entire career in the legal service in Anambra State. The resource persons are wonderful. This is to refocus the newly elected leaders at the local government level. This is a mentoring role for leaders to enable them to showcase the best practices as obtained all over the world. Leaders are custodians of values and must live by examples,” Ononiba said.

He congratulated Governor Obi on his resolve to conduct the election despite opposition, saying that that the seminar was designed to give the newly-elected politicians focus on right values and service delivery.

There were several lectures presented at the seminar and they dwelt on values and leadership.

In his lecture entitled “The Local Government Chairman as a Gardner: Lessons in Leadership,” Dr Okey Ikechukwu, Chairman Anambra Rebirth Organisation challenged the elected officials to maintain political loyalty.

“You must retain you natural habit by not allowing your new office ruin to your health, relationship with people and God.

“You must explore the value of excellence and remember that you are not in office to serve yourself,” Ikechukwu said.

The chairman also advised the elected officials to pay attention to selecting competent aides and promote stakeholders’ co-operation among their people.

“Let your vision come from your mission and the understanding of why you are in office,” he stressed.

In his lecture entitled “Challenges of Good Governance in the Face of Wrong Public Expectations,” Prof. Ben Osisioma of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka equally challenged the elected officials on values and leadership qualities.

“Focus on a government that protects the weak in the society and be men of good characters.

“”We need leaders who will unleash the creativity of our people and build on their strength; eschew religious bigotry and ensure equity and fairness at all times,” the Prof. of Accountancy stressed.

Other lectures entitled “Good Polling as Pre-condition for Good Governance,” “Custodian Role of Local Government Chairmen,” and “Values-based Leadership for People-centred Development” were presented by various speakers.

Monsignor Jerome Madueke, Director of Communications Catholic Diocese of Awka demanded that the elected men and women should allow their cultural, social and religious values uplift the positions they are occupying rather than diminish it. He challenged them to be self-reformed in accordance to their new roles of service as they were called for service and not self-aggrandisement and frivolous living.

For Prof. Obiora Francis Ike, Vicar-General Enugu Catholic Diocese who spoke an Igbo language despite having stayed over 30 years abroad with more than three Doctorate degrees in Philosophy said Anambra State has been a reference and the restoration of Igbo culture and tradition as well as language should start with Anambra State, even as he lamented the decay in culture and tradition of Ndigbo which has assisted the loss in language.

He decried the violence that is raging in the Northern Nigeria, pointing out that a visiting Bishop from Maiduguri said that, of his 52 churches, only two were still standing as bombs have destroyed other 50 edifices. He also lamented the killing of 1.5 million children in Igbo land during the Biafra civil war.

He said nothing has destroyed our culture and tradition like buying of certificates, grades and scores by students with the aid of parents and lecturers who should know better. He called for a rethink and rebirth of characters and priorities.

Prof. Ike told the audience that the greatest problem facing the country now especially Ndigbo and Anambra State in particular is problem of poverty of the mind which is selfishness. He urged Ndigbo to go back to their values and ethos for the sake of posterity.

On his part, Prince Nnagozie Ochi, Project Director / Chief Social Architect of Bridges to Goodness (B2G), a human infrastructure development organisation, harped on the need for equitable character exhibition by the new leaders through fairness and justice in decision taking.

In the past year, Anambra State Government has held a series of retreats for senior government officials in Enugu and Johannesburg, all aimed at enhancing service delivery output.

Reacting to what he referred to as a “well-packaged and salutary retreat,” SSG Oseloka H. Obaze commended the planners and said Governor Obi bought into the idea “since it would allow the newly elected officials to hit the ground running.”

A newly sworn in councillor, Mr. Jude Atupulazi from Nimo Ward, Njikoka Local Government Area Mr. Paul Nnatuanya from Ebenebe Ward Awka North Local Government Area commended the governor for organising such seminar, adding that he has been uplifted and motivated.

    NSSF officials commend Kwara Goverment

Officials of the National School Sport Federation (NSSF) have praised the Kwara State Government for hosting the sixth National School Sports Festival successfully.

NSSF President Ibrahim Muhammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone on Wednesday that the government did a good job to ensure that talents were discovered at the event.

He thanked Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for making sure that the facilities used were standard and the event devoid of any sordid incident, even when the notice to host was short.

Muhammed also praised the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, for his passion for the development of the youths and support for the successful hosting of the festival.

“The participants are happy with the Kwara State government because they enjoyed themselves. Events were well competed for and in a free and fair manner,” he said.

The NSSF president also said that the media, security agencies in the state and government officials contributed to the success of the fiesta.

The Secretary of the federation, Mrs Olabisi Joseph, in her reaction, said the government made their dreams realisable, noting that the state government had expressed its readiness to host the event anytime it was called upon.

“If not for the Kwara State government, we wouldn’t have discovered the five-year-old and the youngest medallist at the Games, so far. I must thank the government for giving Nigerian children a chance to show their talents,’’ Joseph said.

She added that the federation would strive to ensure that the event would be held annually, to make for adequate sports development at the grassroots.

Also reacting, the Kwara Director of Sports, Tunde Kazeem, told NAN that the support given by the government resulted in the huge turnout of states for the event.

Kazeem, who also served as Chairman of the festival’s Technical Committee, praised the athletes who represented Kwara for not trying to win at all costs, as hosts. He said the state government’s investment in the U-12 and U-15 football teams was not in vain, as they won gold medals and urged the teams to keep the flag flying.

NAN reports that the Kwara U-12 team will represent Nigeria at the Nestle Africa U-13 Championship in Kenya next year.

Kwara finished fifth on the medals table with 16 gold, 21 silver and 30 bronze medals at the 10-day Games that ended on November 30 at the Kwara Stadium, Ilorin.

    • Hints on screening of officials

Officiating in the national league in the new season will be taken seriously and those charged with such responsibilities will undergo serious credibility screening.

Chairman, Nigeria Nationwide League Muazu Ahmed Kawu gave the hint yesterday. The lower league, according to him, is very important as it serves as take-off point for most young players and as such must be seen to be playing by the rules. Recurring complaints over poor officiating, he said cannot be allowed to go on as it tends to put a dent on credibility.

While thanking the Federal Government for giving the victorious Golden Eaglets a befitting reception, Kawu called for greater support for National league which he said has been at the forefront of producing young players to beef up the various league divisions in the country

“This is the time that our league body needs the support of not only the government but cooperate organisations so that we can continue to groom good and talented players at the grassroots. Let me say for the sake of emphasis that Nigeria Nationwide League has over 200 clubs spread across the six geo-political zone and that figure is enough to turn around the fortune of football in Nigeria,” he said.

Kwara United players, officials get 70 per cent sign-on fees

Players and officials of Kwara United are smiling to the bank following the release of fund for the payment of 70 percent of their sign-on fees of the current league season by the government of Kwara State.

The club’s Media Officer, Olayioye Ajide, who informed SportingLife about the development said the management commended the Kwara State sports-loving governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed who has been attending to the demands of the club as manifested in the presentation of brand new coaster bus and a bus to cushion the effect of the team’s weekly journeys.

Olayioye described the story untrue and an attempt to cause disaffection in the club, the publication in a sports paper that fingered the club’s accountant that he was responsible for the delay in payment of players’ salary.

According to Olayioye, Kwara United place payment of salary in high premium and the club is the best in the aspect of prompt payment of salaries and the club’s accountant cannot play any hanky-panky.

“Kwara State government takes workers’ salary very paramount and first among all payments even as all workers in the state get their salaries on 25th of every month; therefore no parastatal or department like Kwara United can be exceptional,” he said.

Olayioye said that the accountant has not in any way shortchanged anyone on salary as he facilitates process of prompt release of fund from banks.

Echocho-Wada suit: Four Supreme Court officials under probe over hearing date

Fresh facts emerged yesterday that four more officials of the Supreme Court are being investigated over allegation of shifting hearing date of a petition of a governorship candidate, Jibrin Isa Echocho against Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State from June to November.

But an aide to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alooma Mariam Mukhtar said November was fixed for the hearing of Echocho’s appeal in order not to allow disruption by judges’ vacation.

It was gathered that the four officials in the Litigation Unit juggled Echocho’s case file and rated it as insignificant to the CJN.

The officials were said to have adopted a hide and seek game on Echocho’s file after allegedly collecting bribe said to be in millions from some vested interests.

It was gathered that the case was strategically listed and not prioritised in order to defer hearing till the middle of next year.

When the alleged fraud was noticed, a counsel from the chamber of one of the Senior Advocates in the matter drew the attention of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mr. Sunday Olorundahunsi to it, it was learn’t.

Although the counsel alleged bribery scam, the Registrar made sure the laid down rules and regulations in listing matters were followed.

But the Supreme Court was said not to be glossing over the allegation from a counsel in the matter.

A source said: “This important case would have been heard either in June or this July, but some forces penetrated the litigation unit to change the order of listing cases.

“Now, the matter will come up in November in spite of its constitutional importance to the fate of democracy in a state.

“We learnt that they collected princely sum to list the case as one of the least ones to be attended to by the Supreme Court.

“The activities of the four are being investigated and those found guilty might be dealt with.”

An aide to the CJN, however, said: “I cannot say it (the listing fraud) is not existing, I cannot say it existed. It is the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mariam Alooma Mukhtar, who fixes date for hearing of cases.

“The only way the litigation staff are involved is to compile the list of cases according to how the cases were filed or based on the order of dates the cases were filed.

“Regarding this case, I think the CJN fixed it for November because of judges’ vacation. The rule says the Supreme Court must determine any matter within 90 days. If the apex court begins to hear the case now, it would affect the vacation of judges.

“These are the facts that I know on this matter.”

Echocho had in February headed for the Supreme Court seeking to be declared as the authentic candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2011 governorship poll in Kogi State instead of Governor Idris Wada.

He said he is also challenging the validity of the governorship election held by INEC in Kogi State on December 3, 2011 during the pendency of an appeal at the Supreme Court.

    NPFL: Ogunjobi tasks match officials

Taiwo Ogunjobi, Chairman, Osun Football Agency (OFA), has urged referees officiating in the Nigeria Professional Football League’s 2012/2013 season to be dedicated, to ensure a credible league.

Ogunjobi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos, that he expects the best from the league, in spite of its logistic challenges.

“I am expecting a hitch-free season this time around, and less hiccups, which I am sure the NPFL is capable of delivering, so we should expect the best this season. And I hope our referees and officials will live up to expectation, because in football or any other sports at that, officiating can make or mar a competition. And I hope the players will give us something to cheer about this season. They should make the long wait worth it,” Ogunjobi said.

NAN reports that 2012/2013 NPFL season finally kicked off Saturday, after several postponements.

On the level of football development in Osun, and when it would have a club in the NPFL, Ogunjobi told NAN that things were beginning to take shape in the state.

“We are more concerned about our grassroots development; we are not in a hurry, we will get there, I am sure that very soon we will be called up into the NPFL,” he added.

On the level of logistics support from the Osun government, the chairman told NAN that Gov. Rauf Aregbesola had supported the FA immensely.

Ogunjobi, who was a former Secretary of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), added that the OFA would need the support of corporate bodies and well meaning individuals.

“We need more support from the private sector, nothing much is being done from that angle; I want to believe that they are waiting for the right time to partner with us.

“With the amount of support our governor has put into sports, we hope to make more impact with additional support from the private sector,” the former NFA secretary added.

    •Governor signs 2013 Appropriation Bill

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu yesterday warned civil servants, political office holder to be careful in their official dealings because the state was under surveillance.

The governor spoke in Minna, the state capital, after signing into law the 2013 Appropriation Act passed by the House of Assembly.

But he did not explain why the state was being watched by an unnamed anti-graft agency.

Aliyu warned that everything government officers was being monitored.

He said: “Everyone, I mean, all political appointees and elected officers, must be very cautious and careful. Some of us are under surveillance. Anyone from Niger State may be given more surveillance than people from other states.”

Besides being monitored by the anti-graft agencies, the governor said government officials were also under security agencies’ telescope.

Aliyu said: “This is not only a declaration but also a warning. Be careful in what you do in your offices, because when a petition is written against you, anti-graft and security agencies will surely invite you.”

The governor signed the N84,098,860,326 budget, instead of the proposed N83,798,860,360 estimate, which was presented to the House of Assembly on December 4.

The budget was increased by N300million.

Of the over N84billion proposal, N46billion would be committed to recurrent estimates while N37billion would be spent on capital projects.

Aliyu said the record time the budget was passed was an indication that the relationship between arms of government was cordial.

  • N.45m theft: Three bank officials in police net in Ado-Ekiti

Three workers of a new generation bank in Ado-Ekiti have been arrested by the police for alleged theft of N450,000 from a couple.

The couple, Dr. Tunde Akindele and Mrs. Josephine Akindele, in a telephone interview with reporters said they came from Ife in Osun State on a visit to their relations at Ijelu farmstead in Ado-Ekiti.

They said they went to the bank to withdraw the said amount but ended losing it in a way they considered strange.

Mrs. Akindele said: “When I said I needed a withdrawal form, a lady at the counter told me to use the Automated Teller Machine (ATM). When I attempted it, it was rejected twice. The machine would just not do it.

“Then the lady I spoke with across the counter contacted another worker in the bank who she referred to as the computer operator. While the computer operator was working on the computer system, she made a telephone call.

“I was eventually paid the money across the counter by the same cashier and left the bank, keeping the money in a safe in the car.

“We left the bank’s premises and headed for Ijelu but observed that a green Honda was following us right from the bank but we did not think it could be robbers planning their game on us.”

She said at Ijelu where they had gone to see their father-in-law, they did not spend 10 minutes. When they came out, only their car had been vandalised and the money was stolen.

“Our mobile handsets, my handbag and some cash were all lying on the car seat but none of these were touched by the thieves. That sparked our curiosity,” Akindele said.

A private prosecutor, Niran Owoseni, said the case was transferred to the State Investigation Bureau (SIB) .

Owoseni said he had sought the Attorney-General’s fiat to prosecute the matter.

But, police spokesperson Mr. Olu Victor Babayemi said he was not aware of the development.
