    9ice warms up for politics

ABOLORE Akande, popularly known as 9ice, may be dabbling into the murky water of politics in Nigeria in the 2015 general elections.

The artiste, who hails from Ogbomoso in Oyo State, recently disclosed his intention via his twitter page, saying,“Your Honorable come 2015. Ogbomoso North Constituency.”

9ice, who is currently studying Public Safety and Common Law at Capella University, said he chose Law because of his long-time passion to fight for the less privileged members of the society.

He is the founder of Alapomeji Records and is known for his use of the Yoruba language in his music.

9ice has variously compared himself to Youssou N’Dour who has won a couple of Grammy awards with music recorded in his mother tongue and Yvonne Chaka-Chaka whose music is also rich in her language.

  • Ogbomoso residents protest alleged neglect of LAUTECH College

Residents of Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have protested the alleged neglect of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) College of Health Sciences and the Teaching Hospital.

They marched on major streets, carrying placards with inscriptions, such as: “No to the marginalisation of the College of Health Sciences and the Teaching Hospital”; “Governor Ajimobi, speak up Now” and “College of Health Sciences has come to stay in Ogbomoso,” among others.

All entrances into LAUTECH’s main campus, the College of Health Sciences and the Teaching Hospital were barricaded by the protesters, who chased workers out of their offices.

The ever-busy Ilorin-Ogbomoso-Oyo highway was closed to traffic, as the protesters made bonfires on the road.

Though armed policemen patrolled the streets to prevent the breakdown of law and order, there was no casualty report.

Speaking through Mr. Akeem Aleem, the protesters said their action became imperative in view of some unpleasant developments at the college.

Aleem said: “What is the justification for sending the salary of teaching hospital workers in Ogbomoso to Osogbo, the Osun State capital, before payment can be effected.

“What is the status of the college as regards workers’ welfare and why? Since it was inaugurated, the College of Health Sciences is yet to have electricity, which makes learning unbearable for the students.”

When the protesters got to the palace, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Ajagungbade, urged them to conduct themselves with decorum and refrain from acts that can disrupt the peace.

He said: “The people of Ogbomoso are tolerant, peace-loving and accommodating, but they can be very tough and resolute, if their rights are trampled upon.

“The fact that the protesters are mainly indigenes of the town, without any LAUTECH staff joining them, shows that the people are opposed to happenings in the two institutions.”

The monarch told LAUTECH’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Sulaiman Gbadegesin, who was reportedly at the palace, to look into the people’s complaints.

  • Oyo VGN arrests three kidnappers in Ogbomoso

Men of the Oyo State Command of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) have arrested three kidnappers in Ogbomoso.

The kidnappers, Anthony Chinedu (22), Ayo Akinboboye (27) and Olawoye Kazeem (24) who claimed to have come from Ile-Oluju in Ondo State were apprehended while trying to kidnap a 17- year-old girl, Oyelami Oluwaseun, after seduction.

It was reliably gathered that the incident happened when Oluwaseun was returning from where her parents sent her around Wema area in the town.

“It was around noon, as Seun was waiting for Okada to ride home, when she noticed three men were coming towards her.  The three guys pretended as if they didn’t know where they were going, hence seeking direction.  The girl suddenly became dizzy while the criminals were attempting to abduct her into their waiting car.”

However, according to a source, “Before the girl could be dragged into the vehicle, she regained consciousness and shouted for help.  The VGN men who were reportedly passing by heard her and rescued her and arrested the kidnappers.”

In their separate confessional statements, the kidnappers said they came from Ondo State and were notorious for advance fee fraud, a.k.a. 419, adding that they chose Oyo State as their operational base, having duped several unsuspecting people in Ibadan, the state capital.

The three kidnappers have been handed over to the police at Owode, Ogbomoso for further investigation.
