  • FG will strengthen capacity in technology – Onu

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, has said the Federal Government will strengthen the capacity for creative innovation and research in the science and technology sector.

He gave this assurance when the Nigerian Academy of Science led by its President, Prof. Oyewale Tomori visited him at the weekend.

According to Onu, the ministry has commenced the reengineering process in the sector with a view to setting standards in programme implementation and changing the national consciousness of Nigerians to embrace the sector.

He added that science and technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of youths and encouraged parents to support their wards to develop interest in science and technology as this is one way to secure the future of our nation.

He assured Nigerians of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s determination to harness both the human and natural resources to build a better Nigeria by diversifying the economy, wealth and job creation, security and the rule of law through the application of innovations in science and technology sector.

Nigeria’s economy can’t withstand declining oil prices – Onu

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, on Thursday said the present state of Nigeria’s economy may not be able to withstand the shock of the declining crude oil prices.

He called for diversification of the economy from oil to the science and technology sector.

Onu, who spoke during a meeting with former ministers of Science and Technology in his office, said the Buhari administration will science and technology the cornerstone for the nation’s development.

He also urged the Federal Government to improve the budgetary allocation to the sector

The former ministers said science and technology if properly explored, will become the nation’s inexhaustible oil for the future, the cornerstone of development and wealth creation and undoubtedly create jobs in an unprecedented manner for teeming youths in the country.

They enjoined the minister whom they described as a “round peg in a round hole” to use his wealth of experience to change the fortune of the ministry by engendering the needed attention from government and the undeserved perception from members of the public about the critical role science and technology play in national development .

They commended the minister for the initiative which they described as first of its kind in the annals of the ministry.

  • Buhari is committed to African peace – Onu

Buhari is committed to African peace – Onu

President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to ensuring that Africa remains the centre peace of Nigeria’s foreign policy, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu,  said on Thursday.

He said the dream of Africa peace is possible when all countries join hands to work for the development of the continent, with the notion that peace is attainable.

Onu spoke while receiving an award from African Students’ Union Parliament (ASUP) at Abuja.

The APC chieftain said the change was possible due to the collective desire of Nigerians to effect it in a democratic manner.

Onu said: “I want to assure you that this present administration in Nigeria came because of the collective desire of Nigerians for change. We were in the opposition for 16 years and Nigerians did not like the way the country was moving.

“And that is why many of us who were in opposition stayed there to make sure we effect the change in a democratic manner. And the administration we have now-the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is committed to making sure that Africa remains the centre peace of Nigeria’s foreign policy.

I will not disappoint Ndigbo, Nigerians – Onu

The former Abia State Governor promised to discharge his duties in such a way that he will remain a source of pride to the people of the Southeast and Nigeria as a whole.

Onu, who gave the assurance at a reception held in his honour at the Jesus Saves Arena in Owerri, said, “any position I find myself tomorrow, I will still discharge my duties in such a way I will be a source of pride to the people of the Southeast and Nigeria. I cannot afford to disappoint my people or my country.”

The change we had promised have come and I can assure you, it would give birth to legacies and landmarks that would endure the test of time.”

  • ‘The Ogbonnaya Onu that I know’

‘The Ogbonnaya Onu that I know’

It was about 32 years ago, when I was already an employer of labour having established my first Company, Chel Water Nigeria Limited, that I met Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a brilliant, self-effacing and consummate academic, when he was a member of the Board of Directors of Nigercem Nkalagu, now in Ebonyi State. Our friendship has remained unbroken and waxed from strength to strength. It is therefore my singular honour and privilege to write about a man I have been very closely associated with for over three decades.

Onu was born on 1st December, 1951, to the family of His Royal Highness, Late Eze David Aba Onu, Eze Adu of Uburu in Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State in Nigeria. The academic brilliance of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu manifested very early when he obtained Grade One with Distinction in his West African School Certificate examination at Izzi High School, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. He went further to obtain distinctions in Physics and Chemistry at the Higher School Certificate Examination at the College of Immaculate Conception (CIC), Enugu, graduating as the best overall student. In 1976, he graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos (Unilag). He later obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering (without passing through a Masters degree) at the reputable University of California, Berkeley, California, USA, in 1980.

On returning to Nigeria, Onu taught at the University of Port Harcourt as the Pioneer Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. On several occasions he served as the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Port Harcourt. He was also elected as a member of the Governing Council of the University. Onu did not limit himself to acquiring high grade certificates in academic institutions; he had time for extra-curricular activities where he also excelled. His capabilities as a leader of his peers and others shorn like a thousand stars. A few examples will suffice. While in the University of California, Berkeley, he was President of the African Students Union. He was also a member of the Graduate Assembly of the University of California at Berkeley as well as the President of the Nigerian Association of Northern California Incorporated (Inc). Back in Nigeria, Dr. Onu served as the President General of the Old Boys Association of his Alma Mata, Izzi High School Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

While in Port-Harcourt, Onu became President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt. He was also the Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers of Old Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States’ Chapter. Dr. Onu was a pioneer National President of Raw Materials Society of Nigeria. The Society ceased to exist when the Federal Government established the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and Dr. Onu served as a member of the first Board of Governors of the Council.

When he delved into partisan politics, his attributes as an articulate political strategist and sagacity manifested and blossomed. Not many will remember that Onu was an aspirant for the Senatorial seat in the Old Imo State on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). That attempt could well be referred to as Onu’s political baptism, as he did not emerge to become the candidate. But having stepped out in the political arena there was no looking back for the ebullient and calculative personality.

Upon the creation of Abia State and partial return of Nigeria to partisan politics by the General Ibrahim Babaginda military administration, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu joined the Nigerian Republican Convention (NRC) and threw his hat in the ring to contest for the governorship nomination of his party with the legitimate ambition to become the first elected governor of the newly created state on the platform of his party. I remember accompanying him to consult a number of party big wigs and major stakeholders in Abia State. We went to Dr. Chris Adighije at his Olokoro country home in Umuahia. Dr. Adighije later became a Senator of the Federal Republic. He was helpful in securing the support of Chief B.B. Akpugo, a major power broker in Abia State and NRC and a few other opinion leaders in the state. My late Uncle, Mr. J. U. Agwu, a Permanent Secretary in the First Republic government of M. I. Okpara, stood solidly with Dr. Onu at that time and their friendship endured until my uncle died. I remember us reaching out to these leaders with traditional kolanuts as tradition demanded and very affordable modest drinks. Dr. Onu did not get into the gubernatorial race with a large war chest, but his integrity, sincerity of purpose, humility, clear understanding of what he wished for Abia State and a high dose of political sagacity were some of his strong attributes. Whoever he encountered just once was convinced to support his candidature. In spite of paucity of funds, Onu won the nomination of the NRC in Abia State to fly the party’s governorship flag and proceeded to sweep the polls at the governorship election to become the first elected Governor of Abia State in 1992. It was a near miracle to move from the classroom as a university teacher to win a governorship election in Igbo land where money is a major issue. It was in that year, 1992, that Dr. Onu appointed me as a member of Abia State University Governing Council.

As the beloved he set out from the very onset to introduce landmark reforms in the state, he introduced free maternal healthcare programme. Security of lives and property were considerably enhanced, such that within a single year, the Abia State Police Command received two letters of commendation from the Inspector-General of Police. He abolished the state of origin syndrome in Abia State and proceeded to appoint non-indigenes of Abia State into his government. This was to underscore his belief in Nigeria’s unity as an instrument for national integration and development. It was Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu that founded the Abia State Polytechnics in Aba; he established the College of Education at Arochukwu and attracted the Michael Okpara Federal University of Agriculture at Umudike, near Umuahia. Dr. Onu established the Abia Broadcasting Corporation in Abia State as well as the National Ambassadors Newspaper which then won several awards as the best state-owned newspaper. He achieved all these within a period a little more than 20 months with federal allocation ranging between 40 and 60 million naira monthly.

It was Dr. Onu that christened Abia State “GOD’S OWN STATE” and symbolized his noble dream for the state by building the “Abia Tower of Peace”. At the resumption of partisan politics in 1999, Onu emerged as the first presidential flag bearer of the then All Peoples Party (APP) which was later known as All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). I was a member of the national caucus of APP. Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu with whom I joined the party, became a member of the Board of Trustees of APP. Other notable Igbo members of APP at that time included Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Chief Arthur Nzeribe, late Chief Evan Enwerem, Dr. Joshua Odunna, etc. It is to Dr. Onu’s eternal credit that he showed an unalloyed loyalty to the party in the spirit of the supremacy of party and as a true democrat that he submitted to the directive of the party leadership to relinquish his position as presidential flag bearer to pave the way for Dr. Olu Falae of Alliance for Democracy (AD) to become the presidential flag bearer of APP in a curious political alliance between AD and APP. While all the notable members of APP moved out of the party at different times and for different reasons, Dr. Onu remained committed to the party. Little wonder his fellow party men and women in September 2010 in recognition of Dr. Onu’s rare political fidelity, discipline, steadfastness and exemplary commitment to the party’s ideals elected him as the National Chairman of the party.

It was from this privileged position that he proceeded to reposition the ANPP that was already degenerating to a regional party and brought the party back to national reckoning. Onu as the leader of the foremost opposition party in the country which by extension made him the defacto leader of opposition in Nigeria, led his party to a historic merger with the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, which was ultimately registered as All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 31, 2013. Dr. Onu is a member of Board of Trustees of APC and was appointed by the President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, as a member of his transition committee.

Onu is the author of many books and has garnered awards and chieftaincy titles too numerous to be accommodated in this brief piece. He is married to Dr. Chinyere Onu with children who like their parents are upwardly mobile.

I wish to conclude this brief narrative by acknowledging from personal experience of more than 30 years of unbroken friendship with Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu that he is a first class gentleman whose word is his bond. Any understanding reached with Ogbonnaya Onu is bankable. There is no difference between written and unwritten agreement as far as he is concerned. His integrity, sincerity and honesty are incomparable. His humility is disarming. Betrayal and inordinate ambition are vices that are alien to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s personality. Entrust him with a sensitive national responsibility, you can sleep with your two eyes closed. It is a common saying that if you show me your friend and I will show you who you are. I am therefore privileged to refer to Onu as my friend and brother. I urge all his friends to continue to pray for him in his stride to continue to render service to his fatherland as destiny beckons on him.

–Chief Okorie is the National Chairman and 2015 Presidential Candidate of UPP.

  • Why Buhari remains best alternative, by ex-Abia governor Onu

Why Buhari remains best alternative, by ex-Abia governor Onu

Abia State’s ex-Governor Ogbonnaya Onu told Nigerians yesterday why the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) is the best to rescue the nation.

Dr. Onu, who speaking in an interview in Abuja, described the APC standard flag bearer at the rescheduled March 28 as a man of honesty and sincerity with the prerequisite knowledge on how to get Nigeria out of the woods.

According to him, Gen. Buhari, with great antecedents and good virtues that speak volumes, has capacity to fight corruption, adding that his commitment to the war against corruption would trickle down to reducing violence and insecurity.

He said the APC was established to create competition in politics and to achieve good governance,.

“We felt we needed the competition in the political arena and we believe things have not been going on in the right way. The level of insecurity has never been as bad as it is now in the country as well as unemployment, corruption and poor infrastructure,” he said.

Onu also disclosed that the plan was for the APC to offer a better alternative to the people.

“If Nigerians have not enjoyed 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led administration, the people now have a better alternative where they can exercise their franchise,” Onu explained.

Restating the party’s commitment to provide good governance, the former Abia governor said the APC will return the country to its rightful position in the comity of nations.

He urged Nigerians to give the party that opportunity to govern them in other to witness genuine change.

His words: “We’ll ensure the level of corruption is brought down and we w’ll draw a line. The reason it is important to reduce corruption in the country is that if we do not do that, we will not have enough resources to work on infrastructures, schools, create jobs and we are committed to ensure that those who cannot help themselves are taken care of.”

Speaking on how the party’s objectives will be organised,  Onu stated that all the presidential aspirants signed an undertaking to ensure that whoever emerged at the polls will be supported to implement manifestoes of the party.

He lauded the military for recapturing some of the local government areas hitherto held captive in the Northeast by Boko Haram insurgents.

Onu however berated the Federal Government for waking up to its responsibility rather too late, pointing out that lives and properties would have been saved if such steps had been taken at the appropriate time.

”With what has happened, I feel very bad that we had to allow so much sufferings, a lot of sufferings and unimaginable sufferings. It is really sad what they have been allowed to go through,” Onu added.

  • 2015: Who’ll fly flags in Ebonyi, Imo?

2015: Who’ll fly flags in Ebonyi, Imo?

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) conducts its governorship primaries this week, South-East states of Ebonyi and Imo, offer intriguing scenarios, reports Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, with added reports from Ogochukwu Anioke in Abakaliki and Ukodili in Owerri

EBONYI and Imo are two of the South-East states where All Progressives Congress (APC) hopes to produce the governors in 2015. Because APC is the ruling party in Imo, and its current flag bearer, Governor Rochas Okorocha, is widely adjudged to have performed creditably well, the party is very hopeful to retain the state notwithstanding the array of heavy weights jostling to fly the flag of the opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The hope in Ebonyi, the salt of the nation, touted over the years as a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) state, according to sources, derives mainly from the increasing popularity of the opposition political parties in the state, since 2007.

It would be recalled that during the 2007 Governorship Election in Ebonyi State, the former governor of old Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, contesting on the ticket of the then All Nigerian People’s Party (ANPP) matched PDP’s candidate, Governor Martin Elechi, on all grounds in what observers described as a keenly contested race. Though he contested on an opposition ticket, many said he only lost narrowly, the power of incumbency notwithstanding.

Taking cognisance of this history, and considering that the same Onu is the leader of APC in the state today, observers of the politics of the state say although the state has been ruled by PDP since 1999, PDP must be worried this time, not only because of the impact opposition political parties have made continuously in the politics of the state in the past seven years but also because the leading opposition today, the APC, as a mega party, comprising many of the political parties that were individually popular in the state, is both very strong and popular in the state.

APC strategists, we gathered, are also poised to take advantage of the deep- rooted misunderstanding and power play in the ruling PDP. Since Governor Martin Elechi adopted Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu as the PDP consensus governorship candidate, the ruling party had exploded

All these factors, we learnt has made APC a viable platform in the governorship race in Ebonyi State, a fact that has resulted in emergence of strong and very influential aspirants seeking to govern the state on the platform of APC. Among the aspirants for the Thursday APC governorship primaries are, Senator Julius Ucha; Dr Ogbonnaya Onu; Austin Edeze and Dr. Steve Egbo.

    Julius Ucha

Considered a strong and influential politician, Senator Julius Ucha, who at a time chaired the Senate Committee on Works, represented Ebonyi Central Senatorial Zone twice at the red chamber of the National Assembly. Before going to the National Assembly, he served as the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

Not new to the opposition politics in the state, Ucha engaged Governor Martin Elechi in 2011 when he flew the flag of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) during the 2011 Governorship Election in Ebonyi State.

After that election, his supporters insisted he dusted the governor and his ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a belief that made him to contest the result of the election up to the Supreme Court.

Today, his supporters see him as the real leader of the party in the state going by the high number of delegates in the Central and Northern part of the state which he reportedly controls.

Insiders say his financial war chest is also an important factor in the consideration of his position in Ebonyi State PDP and in the run up to this Thursday’s gubernatorial primaries.

Although he left the state Assembly long ago for the National Assembly, he is still considered a grassroots politician as he arguably remains the force behind the party, especially in the Central. This, according to a source, is attested to by the warm relationship between him and the only APC National Assembly legislator from the state, Hon Peter Edeh, who represents Ucha’s Ishielu/Ezaa North Constituency.

This factors notwithstanding, Ucha’s challenge would be the zoning politics in the state. He is from Ebonyi Central (Governor Elechi’s zone), a zone which by 2015, would have ruled Ebonyi for eight years.

PDP, citing the unwritten Charter of Equity agreement, which stipulates power rotation among the political blocs in the state, has zoned it’s 2015 ticket to the South, and has drummed up the campaign that anything contrary would be unjust as Ebonyi South,  is the only zone yet to produce the governor of the state since 1999. This is because while former Governor Sam Egwu, Elechi’s predecessor, who also ruled for eight years, is from Ohaukwu Government Area in Ebonyi North and Elechi, the current second term governor, is from the Central, it is expected to be the turn of the South.

This implies that if APC is also to be guided by this zoning principle, Ucha’s ambition may be affected negatively.

    Ogbonnaya Onu

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the former governor of old Abia State, is today widely acknowledged as the leader of the opposition not only in Ebonyi State but also in the South-East geo- political zone. He is one of the key aspirants for APC ticket in the Thursday governorship primaries in Ebonyi.

Since after leaving office as governor, Onu has played a leading role in the opposition politics both at the federal level and in Ebonyi State. A former National Chairman of the now defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), he is currently one of the national leaders of All Progressive Congress (APC).

A source in the state told The Nation earlier that “due to his humble mien, Onu’s popularity cuts across all strata of society and across all the zones in the state.” Many of us, the source said, “consider him as one of the most honest politician in the country. We believe that is why he was made the Chairman of the APC’s Presidential Primaries Screening Committee.”

At the state level, Onu has remained active. On the ticket of ANPP, he contested the governorship in 2007 against Governor Martin Elechi.

Since his ambition to succeed Elechi in 2015 became public knowledge, his popularity has been a subject of scrutiny. Insiders say he is still very popular. In fact, in the South Senatorial District, where PDP has proposed to zone its governorship ticket, informed observers say no APC aspirant, or any other aspirant from any party can truly match Onu’s popularity there.

Besides his popularity at home and the high esteem he is held there, other factors that may favour his aspiration is his control of substantial part of the party machinery across the state and his wide acceptability amongst the national leadership of APC. A source, an insider, confirmed this, pointing out that “Onu is highly respected by other leaders of the party at the national level who are favorably disposed to giving him the ticket.”

But our investigation shows that the primary challenge Onu is likely to face in the realisation of his dream is his alleged icy political relationship with Senator Ucha. We gathered that except the national leadership of the party successfully brokers peace, Ucha-led group in the state, may deny support for an Onu ticket. This will be a big minus during the governorship election. “PDP will be too happy for such a development as it will further ease their way back to the Government House in Abakaliki,” a top APC stalwart in the state said.

    Steve Egbo

Dr. Steve Egbo, a political scientist from Ezigba in Onicha Local Government Area of the state, is another prominent governorship aspirant on the ticket of APC.

An academic and Senior Lecturer/ Research Fellow at Abia State University, Uturu, who holds a B.Sc in Political Science and a Ph. D in Public Administration and Local Government, Egbo is today described by his political admirers as the “giant killer.” He earned this appellation following his incredible performance in the recent congresses. One of his ardent supporters boasted during the week that in those congresses, Egbo “succeeded in installing his loyalists in almost all the wards and local governments in Ebonyi South. I dare tell you that “he roundly defeated Dr Ogbonnaya Onu in the battle for the control of Ebonyi South APC. So, Dr Egbo is fast becoming the leader of the APC in our zone,” the source said.

True to the boast, reports on the ward and local government congresses of the party in the state suggest that Egbo’s candidates actually clinched most of the positions in almost all the wards in the five local governments in the South, except of course, the wards in Onu’s Uburu stronghold in Ohaozara LGA.

Besides holding significant part of the party structure in the zone now, another factor that may favour Egbo’s candidacy is the support of Senator Julius Ucha. It is a known fact that Egbo belongs to the Ucha political camp.

Analyzing how Egbo may benefit from this reality, a source in Abakaliki puts it this way: “Since Egbo controls the South, and Ucha controls delegates from the Ebonyi North and Central, Dr Steve Egbo is likely going to beat any candidate from the South for the governorship position, that is if the party zones the position to the South.”

These favorable factors notwithstanding, it must be noted that the popularity that is today being ascribed to Egbo in his Ebonyi South Senatorial District cannot truly be replicated in the North and Central. In fact, his critics say he is little known in these zones. If all the equations remain as they are today, it seems Egbo can only make head way in these zones if Senator Ucha, who reportedly holds the ace there, dumps his aspiration and throws his weight behind him. If this happens, his chances of clinching APC ticket will not only be brighter, but his capacity to match PDP and APGA squarely during the governorship election would be greatly energized.

Another issue his critics are advancing is that he lacks “practical political experience.” This may be true only to the extent that he has not contested and won elections before and has also not held any political office. His supporters however hold that fact as a plus, insisting that he is one of the few “untainted” aspirants and that such a qualification suits the desires of majority of the Ebonyi State electorates clamouring for “genuine change; for a clean break from the past.”

    Austin Edeze

There is also Austin Edeze, who served as the Chairman of Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Fund (UBEB) during Dr Sam Egwu’s administration in Ebonyi State.

Edeze moved to APC during Elechi’s government after he was allegedly sidelined by the Elechi- led PDP in the state.

Sources told The Nation that during the Egwu administration, Edeze, described then ass a grassroots person, enjoyed high popularity. But since the alleged marginalisation under Elechi, it remains to be seen what has happened to his popularity.

Besides the issue of popularity and control of party machinery, another concrete factor that may pose as a challenge to Edeze is the zoning campaign. Edeze hails from Ebonyi North which produced Governor Sam Egwu. Except APC ignores the zoning campaign, he and Ucha would be affected.

    Ominous waiting game in Imo

In Imo State, the APC gubernatorial race is both interesting and tricky as all the would-be aspirants still adopt what an insider described as “siddon de look,” attitude, barely few days to the December gubernatorial primaries.

As at Thursday, November 27, 2014, The Nation investigation shows that no aspirant had obtained the form mainly because of the confusion over Governor Rochas Okorocha’s interest in 2015.

While some of his public utterances confirm reports that he has indeed picked the APC presidential form, he has reportedly assured Imo indigenes that he would not seek office outside the state in 2015.

Recently, Okorocha was at the Ranchers Bees Stadium, Kaduna where he reportedly played “guest to a Northern group known as Arewa Consultative Forum,” where his presidential ambition was allegedly discussed.

Although the confusion over his ambition continued, more recent reports, featuring

Front page picture showing Okorocha as APC aspirant, displaying his nomination form, in Kaduna, during a rally, seemed to have confirmed the ambition.

That notwithstanding, reports of his assurances to remain in Imo has not stopped, thus creating a situation where would- be aspirants for the governorship race on the ticket of APC, knowing it would be difficult to contest against the governor for the ticket, have resorted to the ominous waiting game

For example, when he recently addressed APC stalwarts, including appointees, aspirants, delegates and party officials, at the Imo International Convention Centre, IICC, Okorocha reportedly said:  “I am not going to leave Imo, I am not going to leave my people, I am not going to leave my projects.”

These contradictory signals is after similar meetings at the Government House, with top government officials and political appointees. In one of such meeting, one of the attendees claimed that Okorocha told them everyone of them is free to pick up nomination form to contest the governorship race.

In another of such meetings at the Government House, another participant, a top public officer, said the governor clearly told them he was still in the game for the governorship in Imo. According to the source, who pleaded not to be named, Okorocha said, he was merely flying a kite by declaring interest in the presidential race, adding that it was because PDP aspirants thought he would not contest, that was why many of them picked their party nomination forms.

It was obviously because of the confusion that one of the aspirants, the first APC aspirant to publicly declare interest in Imo, Charles Onuoha, a former Commissioner for Housing under the current Okorocha ‘s government, had to move over to PDP, where he is now contesting for the office of governor.

Since someone must fly the APC governorship ticket in Imo, it seems plausible to speculate that Okorocha, as the serving governor, would be the sole candidate. This is so because any other aspirant that may emerge now may not have enough time to contest against the incumbent governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

He said “I want to say that I appreciate the sacrifice you are about to make on behalf of this party. In line with our name and what we stand for. As a critical committee, we are not going to do anybody a favour, but we are asking you to do this party a favour because your are major stakeholders in your own right.

“As far as this particular committee is concerned, we have decided to choose persons who, when anybody hear their names and who when the presidential candidates appear before you, they will have respect for the people before who they are appearing because they know that you are solid individuals. So that when you make pronouncement, you are pronouncing your convictions and not to please anybody.”
