The 85-year-old died on Friday evening in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan was one of the early callers at the Aso Drive residence of the Oghiadomhes yesterday.

A statement in Abuja by Oghiadomhe said Papa: “was a devoted Christian who welcomed everybody equally.

“He was a very caring father not only to his children, but to all the students who passed through him, including his community.

“His colleagues knew him for his intelligence and brilliance, while his students knew him for discipline.

“He was easy going, a community builder, peace builder and a lover of children.”

Funeral rites will be announced by the family at a later date.

  • ‘Oghiadomhe is Edo North’s PDP leader’

A  group in Edo North has dismissed as inconsequential, a purported vote of no confidence passed in President Goodluck Jonathan’s Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, by some People’s Democratic Party (PDP) members in the area and a publication to that effect.

The group, Edo North PDP Stakeholders, in a statement by Michael Abekhe, said: “We are surprised by the purported publication and the so-called Edo North members’, leaders’ and stakeholders’ meeting held at Polaris Hotel, Jattu, Afeshio, Etsako West Local Government Area, chaired by Mr. Johnson Agbolaba, about passing a vote of no confidence/calling for the sack of Chief Oghiadomhe. “What is the rationale behind such a resolution? What is his crime? To be working for the president of our country, Chief Oghiadomhe has literally mortgaged his life for the good of our nation. “Oghiadomhe’s reach, assistance and generosity to the masses cut across the length and breadth of the nation and with his position comes great responsibility not limited to his immediate constituency only.

“Do you know how many war room sessions he is involved in daily concerning the state of the nation, given the state of insecurity in our land and the trust deficiency? How can the Chief of Staff be parochial at a time every leader is called to hold on to our fledgling democracy? It’s so shameful that at a time when we need high level maturity, what we get from the so- called stakeholders in Edo State is such rascality. Can we not take a cue from our brothers from the North; do they wash their dirty linen in public? Even in a home, a perceived bad son is still a son; he has his birth right. Should we not be happy that we have our own holding such a sensitive position as opposed to we brandishing him a black sheep? Should we not have parley sessions and like civilised people express whatever grievances we have if any at all? Don’t you all have access to him as state party chairman and so- called Edo North leaders? In the final analysis, Chief Oghiadomhe owes no one anything other than his continuous sacrifice and commitment to the transformation agenda of Mr. President.”

The group added: “We should rather ask our state party Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, how our great party in Edo State fell in the trenches under his watch and how we have found ourselves in the opposition in Edo State politics.

“We call on all party faithful in Edo North, Edo State and Mr. President to disregard such a malicious gathering. In due course, we shall decide the destiny of our great party together in unity. We pledge our continuous loyalty and support to Chief Oghiadomhe as the Edo North PDP leader.

“The moment we start to realise that our destinies are in our hands, the better for us. Let’s all look inwardly and deeply reflect before we destroy the shaky pillars we have. Let’s seek wisdom from above to help us to become objective and mature. A word is enough for the wise!”

  • ‘We have confidence in Oghiadomhe’

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed as “inconsequential and of no effect”, the passage of vote of no confidence in the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadiomhe, by some aggrieved persons from Edo North.

PDP leadership in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, urged Nigerians to disregard the vote of no confidence, warning that it would no longer tolerate indiscriminate and wanton pronouncements by party members and organs against persons legitimately holding sensitive positions in the party and the PDP-led administration.

“The national leadership of the PDP hereby declares as inconsequential and of no effect, the passage of vote of no confidence in the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Oghiadiomhe, by some aggrieved persons from Edo North.”Also, we have taken serious note of the various sponsored malicious news stories and articles targeted at ridiculing the office and person of the Chief of Staff to the President and other leaders of our party.

“We wish to state that we are pleased with the contributions of Chief Oghiadiomhe to national development and the growth and stability of our party.

“Chief Oghiadiomhe is a very committed, loyal and dedicated leader of our party, who has continued to selflessly and meritoriously serve at very high levels with outstanding performance records as a two-time deputy governor of Edo State, former Chief of Staff to the Vice-President and currently the Chief of Staff to the President of our great country…”

  • Why Oghiadomhe voted at PDP convention, by Metuh

Why Oghiadomhe voted at PDP convention, by Metuh

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday justified the presence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, at its recent convention in Abuja.

The party said he was qualified to vote at the event as a delegate.

The PDP regretted that critics had attempted to discredit the presidential aide and malign his personality out of ignorance.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said Oghiadomhe was duly elected as a delegate and participated in that capacity at the convention.

He said: “It is the height of mischief for any person or group of persons to, under any guise whatsoever, allude that Chief Oghiadomhe, a two-time deputy governor and one of the leaders of the PDP, was not eligible to vote in the 2013 Special National Convention.”

Metuh warned those peddling rumours against the party’s chieftain to desist or face the consequence.

He added: “The PDP cautions those behind the peddling of this wicked falsehood to stop wasting their time, as it cannot, in any way, yield their expected dividend – which is to drag the name and office of the Chief of Staff to the President in the mud and discredit the August 31 Special National Convention.”
