    OGIRS workers tasked on integrity, revenue generation

    Staff of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) have been urged to uphold integrity to improve revenue generation, curb leakages, and eliminate sharp practices.

    The Executive Chairman of OGIRS, Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye, gave the charge during the New Year prayer session at the agency’s premises in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, emphasising that integrity remained the key to building and sustaining the trust of taxpayers and the general public.

    Olaleye urged staff to enlighten members of the public on how the new tax reforms would bring prosperity to all categories of citizens, young and old, especially the low-income earners. He encouraged workers to have the fear of God and embrace righteousness, noting that these virtues would continue to be the pathway to success.

    He also charged tax officials to clearly communicate the intent and objectives of the ongoing tax reforms, stressing that this would ensure more disposable income for low-income earners, increased production, economic growth and a reduction in inflation, adding that High Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs) would be more compliant in paying appropriate taxes under the new tax regime.

    “Do your work diligently. The new tax laws are similar to the millennium era, when many were uncertain about what would happen. As tax regulatory authorities, you have a lot of responsibility,” he stated.

    In his sermon, a cleric from Rhema Chapel International Churches, Yaba, Lagos, Pastor Caleb Ayinla, took his exhortation from Jeremiah 29:11-14, highlighting the importance of prayer in the lives of individuals, citing Biblical examples such as Job and Elijah, noting that prayer has the power to turn unpleasant situations around, while he encouraged workers to cultivate a lifestyle of prayer, describing it as the power that moves the hand of the Maker.

    Also speaking, the Chief Imam, Government Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Imam AbdulFatai Buhari, advised workers to desist from hypocritical acts in the discharge of their duties, urging them to be more committed, proactive, and to renew their intentions as the new year kicks off.

    The Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) has embarked on strategic dialogue and sensitisation on Single Road Tax Stickers (SIRTS) and Single Haulage Fee (SHF) Initiative.

     The initiative was part of a one-day workshop organised by Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) aimed at ensuring tax clarity and ease the burden of multiple taxation on businesses,

    At the event themed: ‘Sensitisation on Single Interstate Road Tax Stickers (SIRTS) and Single Haulage Fee (SHF) Initiative,’ held in Lagos, the Chairman of OGIRS, Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye, explained that the programme was designed to bring together key players from the manufacturing and revenue sectors to deliberate on the opportunities and challenges of implementing  the unified levies across States.

    Olaleye, said that the benefits of SIRTS as a tool to promote ease of movement and curb extortion on Nigerian roads noting that the reforms were designed to streamline road tax administration and reduce the cost of doing business for transporters and manufacturers nationwide.

     “The SIRTS initiative simplifies interstate road taxes by introducing annual payment for single sticker recognised across all states. This will reduce harassment, improve compliance, and make road transportation more business friendly,” he affirmed.

     He explained that the Single Haulage Fee (SHF) initiative was designed to cover loading and off- loading charges, hinting that the lack of uniformity in laws and rates among States had brought difficulties in the implementation.

     ” The true challenge lies in harmonising the activities of relevant States, Ministries,  Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Transport,  Commerce and Taxation, because without synergy and a unified framework,  SHF implementation will continue to face roadblocks, ” he added.

    The Executive Chairman of Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS),  Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye has been honoured with the Prestigious Award, in recognition of his outstanding performance in tax administration, and fiscal responsibility.

    The event was organised by the National Ethics and Values Award (NEVA), in conjunction with the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

    Presenting the award in Abuja at its maiden edition, themed ‘Upholding Integrity, Celebrating Champions of Ethical Leadership and Values’, the President of African Young Leaders Empowerment Initiative (AFRIYOLEI), Dele Moses, said the award was not just a presentation of plaque but in recognition of individual sacrifice, transparency, and accountability.

    Olaleye, commended the organisers for their thoughtfulness in celebrating ethics and values, appreciating the Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State for his continuous support in giving him a platform where his ingenuity and professionalism is been showcased.

    He encouraged individuals, especially the younger generation, to be committed and exhibit integrity and dedication in their respective fields, which would eventually pay off.

    “If you are called to service, make it worthwhile, do not lose focus, work as if you are working for God, and commit yourself to that service to make it better and leave it better”, he said.

    In his remarks, the Minister for Youth Development, Oluwanbe Ayodele, represented by his Special Assistant on Gender Matters, Kehinde Charity,  urged youths to continue to strive for success, be diligent and selfless till they achieve their desired goals, while advising them to key into the various empowerment programmes of the Federal Government, which would be beneficial to them now and in future.

    Executive Chairman, Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye, has urged employees of the agency to embrace innovative approaches for effective collection and remittance of revenue into government coffer.

    Olaleye noted that an innovative approach comprising adequate checks and balances, as well as proper tax education and public enlightenment for the people would ensure enhanced revenue collection in the state. adequate.

    Olaleye said this during the 2024 mid-year performance review and strategy virtual session of the agency.

    Olaleye noted that the review would enable the agency to identify strengths, and weaknesses, and deliberate on solutions, to generate more resources for the government purse.

    He commended the zonal officers, tax office managers, and others for their hard work and diligence, urging them to be productive in every task assigned to them.

    Contributing, Special Adviser to Governor on Revenue, Jide Sanwo admonished the tax officers to continue to exhibit a spirit of oneness and remain focused.

    OGIRS advises employers of Labour against payment of penalty

    Employers of labour with employees resident in Ogun State have been warned to file their Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Tax Returns for year 2023 on or before January 31, 2024 to avoid payment of penalty.

    This was contained in a statement signed by the Executive Chairman of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), Mr Olugbenga Olaleye at his office in Abeokuta.

    According to him, employers of labour with employees resident in the state are statutorily obliged to file their 2023 PAYE tax returns on or before the 31st day of the first month in the new year, failure to do so would attract a penalty of five hundred thousand naira.

    “In line with the provision of section 81(1-3) of Personal Income Tax Act, 2011 as amended and paragraph 10 of 2002 PAYE Regulations, all employers of labour with employees resident in Ogun State both corporate and private organisations are statutorily obliged to file their PAYE Tax Returns for 2023 on or before 31st January 2024; failure to do so will attract penalty upon conviction,” he said

    The Chairman enjoined them to do the needful by logging in with their login credentials as existing Tax Agents on the Agency’s website, www.ogirs.ogunstate.gov.ng. At the same time, Tax Agents who are yet to register are expected to register on the website by supplying the required information in order to obtain login details in their registered email.
