    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State, describing the move as a decisive step toward addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity.

    Speaking at the signing ceremony at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the significance of the new institution in advancing environmental justice, education, and sustainable development.

    “Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development. Ogoni has been at the forefront of our development and agitation and has suffered environmental degradation. It is only fitting that we bring knowledge into that environment”, he said.

    The President emphasized that the establishment of the university goes beyond academia, serving as a reaffirmation of his administration’s unwavering commitment to the people of Ogoni, the Niger Delta, and the nation as a whole.

    “For decades, the Ogoni people have been at the forefront of the fight for environmental restoration and sustainable development, shaping both national and global conversations on these critical issues.

    “By signing this bill into law, we are taking a decisive step towards addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity”,  Tinubu noted. 

    The President described the university as a center of excellence that will equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle contemporary environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions, and contribute to national economic sustainability.

    He extended his gratitude to the National Assembly for its role in passing the bill, acknowledging the efforts of lawmakers and various committees in making the legislation a reality.

    “Let me at this juncture thank the National Assembly, from the Senate President to the Speaker, and all the members and various committees that have seen this bill through,” he said.

    Tinubu also commended the Ogoni delegation for their persistent and peaceful advocacy for justice and environmental restoration.

    “Your steadfast advocacy for justice and building the confidence of our people in a peaceful manner is encouraging, and it will be rewarding. I assure you,” he stated.

    The President urged stakeholders, including traditional institutions, the academic community, the private sector, and young people, to embrace the university as a beacon of knowledge, unity, and progress.

    “Together, we will ensure that it not only fulfills its mandate but also stands as a catalyst for transformational development across the country,” he concluded.
