  • Kosofe LGA: INEC officials still absent in some PUs at 2 p.m.

Voting did not take place in many polling units at Ogudu and Ojota in Kosofe Local Government of Lagos as at 2 p.m. on Saturday as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials failed to show up.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents covering the exercise in the area report that many voters, who had arrived the polling units as early as 7 a.m. left at about 2:30 p.m. frustrated when they could not exercise their franchise.

NAN reports that among polling areas affected were Ward D, units 044, 064, 082, 084, 085 in Ramat Crescent, Kolawole Ashimi St., Alhaja Abass St., and Buari St. in Kosofe council area.

Contacted, INEC Spokesman in Lagos, Femi Akinbiyi, told NAN that the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos, Sam Olumekun, was meeting with the security agencies on how to resolve the problem.

According to him, the ad hoc staff protested over speculations that INEC was paying some people while others were left out.

“INEC does not pay cash to any of its ad hoc staff; all payments were done through electronic payment to the bank accounts of its ad hoc staff.

“If anyone had not seen his or her own allowance, it may be due to some issues emanating from  his or her bank.

“Each ad hoc staff is entitled to receive N9,000  as honorarium, N3,000 for movement  and N1,000 for feeding;  making a total of  N13, 000 for each election.

“The only time we paid cash of N4,500 was  when we paid the training allowance,’’ he said.

A concerned voter, Mr Gbenga Ajibola, said that voters who came out very early in the area on Saturday with lots of enthusiasm to cast their votes went back home after waiting endlessly for INEC officials.

“This shows that we operate a failed system in Nigeria, things like this should not be happening. By this time, people should have cast their votes by now and gone back home,” Ajibola said.

Mr Fola Oyedapo, an elderly voter, said though he was tired, he was still waiting and hopeful that he would cast his vote.

“We are in the dark, we have not been given any information about what has been happening, a lot of people were here in the morning around 8a.m. and 10 a.m.

“Now it is 2.50 p.m. and the crowd has thinned out and even if INEC officials eventually come, voters might not be willing to come out again. (NAN)

  • Physician urges reduction in consumption of canned, fatty foods

A General Physician, Dr Tosin Olowojebutu, on Thursday advised people with high Blood Pressure (BP) not to consume canned foods and fatty or oily foods which were detrimental to their health.

Olowojebutu, who is the Medical Director, Liberty-Life Hospital, Ogudu, Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that canned and fatty foods would increase blood pressure level.

According to him, people should also ensure that they live and work in smoke-free environments.

He described blood pressure as “the pressure at which blood pushes against ones’ vessels as blood passes through the body’’.

“A normal blood pressure allows blood to flow and deliver oxygen and food to different parts of the body.

“We measure blood pressure with two numbers (124/84 mmHg). The first number is called the systolic blood pressure and the second is called the diastolic blood pressure.

“Systolic blood pressure is the highest blood pressure measurement and it is recorded when the heart contracts.

“Diastolic blood pressure is the lowest blood pressure measurement and it is recorded when the heart relaxes and fills with blood.

“The ideal blood pressure is 120/70mmHg; any figure between this and 140/90 is pre-hypertension and a call to action and lifestyle modifications, ’’ Olowojebutu said.

He urged people with high blood pressure to reduce the risks associated with High BP through modification of their lifestyle.

“People with high BP should be physically active for 30 to 60 minutes daily by walking, biking, swimming, dancing or any other physical activity.

“They should eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products and other foods low in fat and salt,’’ Olowojebu said.

  • Ogudu GRA residents, mechanics quarrel over security

A row has broken out between residents of Ogudu GRA in Lagos and auto mechanics over security in the neighbourhood.

The residents are complaining that the neighbourhood has become insecure because of the artisans’ activities.

The Motormech and Technician Association of Nigeria (MOMTAN) denied the claim, accusing the residents of intolerance.

MOMTAN chairman, Alhaji Rasaq Alabi said: “The residents are threatening us to vacate from where we now operate.  Former Commissioner for Transport Kayode Opeifa has intervened for settlement between both parties but Group Captain Muri Salami (rtd) used his influence as a military person to lead some residents to threaten us.”

Alabi said the artisans have been operating in the area since 1980.

The government, he said, began to develop the area in 1983, adding that the place is formerly Alebiosu Street but now Muri Folami Street, Ogudu.

Alabi accused Salami of leading some residents to cut down some of the trees planted during Col. Raji Rasaki’s administration to scare them.

“One major observation was that iron barb wires were used to separate them from the residents so that customers would not have access to the residential area,” Alabi said.

The MOMTAN chairman appealed to the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Dayo Mobereola to intervene before the situation degenerates.

Reacting, Salami, Ogudu GRA Residents Association president, said the mechanics were constituting a nuisance in the area.
