Ogun 2019: Obasanjo, Amosun drum support for Ogun West

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State have justified why the Ogun West Senatorial District should produce the next governor of the state in 2019.

They spoke in Abeokuta, at the 80th birthday ceremony of a former Secretary to the State Government, Deacon Poju Adeyemi, yesterday, stressing that the people of Ogun West are competent, qualified and capable of governing the state.

Obasanjo said it will be unfair to deny Ogun West the governorship position in 2019, after more than 40 years of the creation of the state.

He said Ogun West has credible, illustrious and competent professionals in all sphere of endeavours, such as academia, military, civil service and politics.

However, the former president warned the people of Ogun West to sink their differences and come up with a single candidate in the forthcoming elections.

He said the zone has been unable to present a single candidate in previous elections, due to their political rivalry.

According to him, the people of Ogun East Senatorial District have been out smarting Ogun West in previous elections, by standing behind a single, united candidate.

Amosun, while eulogising the celebrator, said the only way to make him happy for the rest of his life, is to make sure that a candidate from Ogun West emerges as the next governor of Ogun State in 2019.

He said the district should produce the next governor in the spirit of justice, equity and fairness.

The governor said the people of Ogun West have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Ogun State, adding that the only way to compensate them is to give them the governorship slot in 2019.

He urged all stakeholders in the state to see reason with him, in ensuring that a candidate from Ogun West takes over from him in May 2019.

Prominent personalities at the birthday ceremony included the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, members of the Ogun State Executive Council and members of the Ogun State Traditional Council.

  • Ogun 2019: No zoning yet in APC, says Osoba

Ogun 2019: No zoning yet in APC, says Osoba

Former Ogun State governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Chief Olusegun Osoba, yesterday said no individual, however highly placed, can unilaterally zone the party’s governorship ticket to a section of the state.

Osoba spoke when he met his loyalists from the 20 local government areas at his Ibara, Abeokuta home.

The former governor noted that while residents of Ogun Central were not expected to vie for the governorship seat in 2019, the same could not be said of the Ijebu in Ogun East.

The former journalist-turned politician said the Ijebu agenda was real and required close scrutiny rather than pretend that it did not exist.

He said adhering to internal democracy during party’s primaries, fielding acceptable candidates and unity would ensure the success of APC in future elections.

Osoba warned against attempts to oppress or disqualify aspirants because of sentiments.

The APC chieftain said some people could come from Lagos or elsewhere to seek elective positions of their dreams.

He recalled that he never lived in Abeokuta before becoming the governor, saying: “There is nothing wrong in someone coming from Lagos to become Ogun State governor.”

Osoba also cited Gbenga Daniel as another person who lived in Lagos before he came to Ogun to win the governorhip election.

The former governor advised those scheming to anoint and impose a successor on the people to watch it, saying experiences showed that such a step do not always end on a good note.

He said: “Parties must do serious internal democracy; it is the minimum in all parties. Only the party that does serious internal democracy would the public accept.

“It is only when the party uses contestants that are acceptable by the people that it will shine…”

On the state of the nation, Osoba said: “Nigerians are angry because the economy is bad, people are now fighting President Muhammadu Buhari. But for Nigeria to be reformed, it will take a little time and the pain in that reforming is much.

“If we give out money to people so that they can vote for us, the people will collect our money and still vote for the person they believe deserve their vote.

“The governor is still governor. I must respect his position because he is still the governor. In the upcoming election, people will look at all the candidates and at the central level. The person (Nigerians) believe will revive the economy will be the one they will vote for irrespective of the party…”

    Ogun 2019: APC warns aspirants

The Acting Chairman of the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji. Tajudeen Lemboye, has urged governorship aspirants to abide by party rules and constitution. He warned violators that they risked disqualification.

Tajudeen said politics should be  for service and not an avenue to pursue self interest, adding that APC is a party of discipline, which would  not tolerate disrespect to its guidelines and rules by any aspirant.

The Acting State Chairman gave handed the warning at the party secretariat when a federal lawmaker, Hon. Adekunle Akinlade, accompanied by hundreds of supporters, unfolded his intention to participate in the govrnorship race.

Akinlade, who hails from Ogun West Senatorial District, where nobody has emerged yet as governor since the creation of the state over 40 years ago, represents Ipokia and Yewa South  Constituency in the House of Representatives.

He pledged, to consolidate and sustain the rebuilding mission of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, if given the mandate to lead the state on the ticket of APC.

Tajudeen, however, advised the  lawmaker not to restrict the pursuit of his governorship ambition to Ogun West alone, but to reach out to people in Ogun Central and Ogun East as their input is vital to the project.

  • Ogun 2019: Majority Leader urges continuity

The Majority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Yinka Mafe, has called on the people of the state to be prepared to cast their vote once again for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in order to ensure the continuation of the good governance and sustainable development being enjoyed in the state.

Mafe, who represents Sagamu State constituency 1 in the assembly, made the call while speaking to party supporters in Sagamu on Saturday. The Emuren-born politician added that continuity in governance is one of the basic strength of democracy. He thanked the good people of the state for standing firmly with the ruling APC.

According to the lawmaker, the APC remains the party of the people in Ogun State following the impressive performance of the Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led administration since taking over the leadership of the state from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2011.

“Our party, the APC is the preferred party of the people of Ogun state.  I urge our people to be prepared to cast their vote once again for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in order to ensure the continuation of the good governance being enjoyed in the state. Continuity in governance is one of the basic strength of democracy,” he said.

The majority leader also explained that the peace being enjoyed in the state’s House of Assembly is a fall out of the maturity and leadership acumen of the leadership of the current legislature under Speaker Adekunbi Suraj.

A second-term state legislator, Mafe, while responding to questions about his next political move, said, “I am always ready to serve my people. I have served as a state legislator for two terms and I am happy I impacted positively on the lives of my people through quality representation. My desire is to represent them as a legislator again, preferably, at a higher level.”

  • Ogun 2019: No anointed candidate in APC, says chieftain

Ogun 2019: No anointed candidate in APC, says chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ogun state, Otunba Babatunde Onakoya, has said that it was too early for any member to align with governorship aspirants without a recourse to the party’s directive.

He said the party has not anointed any aspirant as its governorship candidate for the 2019 election.

Otunba Onakoya stated this at Eid-el-Fitr party he hosted on Saturday in Ijebu Ode for party stalwarts in the nine local government areas that make up Ogun East Senatorial District.

The party chieftain who is from Ogun East  said such move can jeopardise the chance of APC in 2019 if there were no unity and understanding among party members in the state.

Those at the party included party members, traditional rulers, council of chiefs and the Chairman of Leguru Local Council Development Area of Odogbolu Local Government in Ijebu, Hon. Ololade Onakoya

The APC chieftain lamented that matter has caused the disunity and anti-party activities within the party.

Otunba Onakoya, who was the Chairman of Mobilization Team for Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s Campaign Organisation condemned observed political alignment and realignment  unfolding among members of APC  in Ogun East Senatorial District.

He expressed worry about high level of anti party activities and unapproved political meetings with some governorship candidates.

The APC chieftain said: “Nobody can hijack party structure in the state without knowledge of the governor and our leaders in the party. Therefore all members should relax and be hopeful for the best in 2019.

“I am very sorry for those that have claimed to be controlling our party by the feather and noise of the market. This is not the time to antagonise one another, but to be united so that the party can win the 2019 elections”.

“We must not allow our actions and inactions, unnecessary alignment and realignment to truncate APC chance in 2019. Therefore, we must listen to the voices of our leaders and must not go against them. Let us wait for our governor and party leaders to decide who to follow and don’t let us jump the gun.

“Governor Amosun is a man who has what we call common touch, symbol of hope and achiever in the struggle against all forms of oppressions and a father to all those who suffer injustice. We believe in his sterling leadership and know that he will get us the best candidate when the time comes”, he stated.

Responding on behalf of APC members in Leguru LCDA, Princess Victoria Adejoke described Otunba Onakoya as chief mobilizer, who always put smile on the faces of his people.

She noted that since he became the Mobilisation Chairman for Governor Amosun second term in office, he never misled nor  sold out to the opposition during struggle of 2015 Governorship Election.

“It is not an exaggeration neither is it an oversimplified opinion that Otunba Babatunde Onakoya is the most loyal and faithful follower of Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State. The party was in comatose situation in Ogun East, it is only Otunba Onakoya that uplift the lamp for people to see while the motive is to support the incumbent Governor Ibikunle Amosun on his second term in office.

“If Otunba Onakoya is to be placed on the same scale with other party faithful in other regions of the State, he may still  outshine others in terms of loyalty to his master, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, not even a tape rule can measure his loyalty”, she added.

  • Ogun 2019: Return of the Yewa agenda

Ogun 2019: Return of the Yewa agenda

As Ogun West Senatorial District intensifies quest to produce the next governor of the state in 2019, Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, reports that Ogun 2019 Governorship Election promises to be a crowded race, a development he said will pose a serious challenge to the realization of the so-called Yewa Agenda

THE 2019 gubernatorial election in Ogun State is now less than two years away. Expectedly, politicians with the desire to succeed incumbent Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who will be completing his second term in office in May 2019 and will be ineligible to seek another term in office, are already all over the place, selling their possible candidature in the nooks and crannies of the state.

On a daily basis, across the length and breadth of the state, wide-raging consultations with political leaders in quest of endorsement, as well as unending political alignments and realignments, are now the order of the day as politicians and other stakeholders strategise ahead of the next general election.

Pundits however observed that political activities ahead of the 2019 governorship race may have received a boost in the Ogun West area of the state given the soaring popularity of what has now become known as the “Yewa Agenda”. Yewa Agenda, The Nation learnt is the code name given to the quest of the people of Ogun West, especially those of Yewa extraction, to be allowed to produce the governor of the state in 2019.

This quest, which is hinged on the hope that the gubernatorial tickets of the major political parties would be zoned to the area ahead of the 2019 election, is based on a recurring outcry of unending marginalisation by the people of the district. This largely emanates from the claim that no person from the zone has governed the state since its creation on February 4, 1976.

Speaking to The Nation during the week, Hon. Kehinde Odegbemi, a chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a former state executive committee member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), said the people of Yewaland in particular and Ogun West in general are now more than ever before, determined to produce the next governor of the state.

“It is a fact that politics and governance in Ogun State have been dominated by the central and east senatorial districts to the exemption of Ogun West. This has resulted in long years of infrastructural decay and socio-economic marginalisation of our people. This is why you now see a strong agitation for power shift to Ogun West this time around,” he said.

    Recurring cries of marginalisation

Another Yewa indigene, Dapo Oke, who is the convener of Ogun West Rebirth, a group at the forefront of the agitation for Ogun West District to be favored in the 2019 governorship contest, lamented what he described as ‘unfair and total relegation of the district in the scheme of things for over four decades.

“If democracy itself is about equity, it is about equal opportunity, and if democracy is all we are talking about, everybody being the same, then it means the people of Yewa/Awori must definitely be allowed to actually have a taste from the pot of power in Ogun State. It is no longer acceptable for us to be treated as second class citizens in our own state.

“1979, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) produced Chief Bisi Onabanjo, who was an Ijebu person as governor and he was returned in 1983 for a second term. In 1993, power shifted to Egba, and we had Chief Segun Osoba as governor. In 1999, Osoba returned under AD as governor. Gbenga Daniel (OGD) came in through the PDP in 2003 on the ticket of Remo. He spent eight years.

Sadly, at a time in 2011, when people felt it was the turn of Yewa, Amosun came in and got two terms. That was an alteration of the rotation because Egba was taking a second turn while Yewa is yet to take even one. So, the only fair thing to do now is for all the zones to allow Yewa to have its own turn at governing the state.

Even if we leave the issue of the four divisions and concentrate on senatorial districts, Ogun West is yet to have a shot at the governorship. So, Ogun West, made up of Yewa and Awori lands, should still be allowed to produce the next governor in the spirit of equity and good neighborliness. That is our agitation,” he said.

Rev. Adelani Adebiyi, a chieftain of the ruling APC, is also miffed at the situation of things and is strongly urging all the political parties in the state to give their governorship ticket to a Yewa aspirant. According to him, “it no longer matters who the person is or which area of Yewaland he or she is from. All that is important is that Ogun West be allowed to produce a governor.”

“Take a look at how the governorship has actually moved in Ogun State, you will see that Ogun East, where Onabanjo and Daniel come from, has produced two governors; Ogun Central with Osoba and Amosun, the incumbent governor, has also produced two governors, while Ogun West is yet to produce one. Where is equity in this?

    Intensified efforts

Following the failure of similar bids in 2011 and 2015, when the multitude of Yewa-born governorship aspirants all lost to incumbent Governor Amosun, it appears the people of the zone, in their determination to actualise their desire to produce the next governor of t

he state, may have intensified efforts aimed at getting all stakeholders within and outside the area to buy into their agitation ahead of the 2019 election.

Before now, the agitation is usually left for politicians and activists to champion. But as we speak, the elite class, as well as the traditional institutions in the zones, has thrown its weight behind the current quest. Recently, the Yewa-Awori traditional council publicly urged Amosun to pick one of the Ogun West indigenes serving in his administration as his candidate for the 2019 governorship poll.

The Olu of Ilaro and the paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle made the call while leading the council, made up of 19 Obas to a meeting with Amosun at the Governor’s Office, Oke Mosan in Abeokuta. He asked all Yewa-Awori indigenes currently serving in the Amosun administration, who are aspiring for the 2019 governorship poll, not to work against any candidate picked by the governor.

The council’s call is coming on the heel of an announcement by Amosun that he will support a Yewa person to succeed him in 2019. The governor said his decision is informed by the need for equity and fairness. Oba Olugbenle said the governor’s decision to support the Ogun West candidate in the 2019 governorship poll, has posed a challenge to the traditional council to play a critical role in the governorship race. The Nation also learnt that as part of the efforts towards 2019, Yewa Obas are already discussing with the traditional institutions in the other zones of the state on the need for everybody to support the call for a Yewa man to be the next governor of the state. Several meetings have been held across the state to discuss this issue.

“We are meeting with our colleagues from other zones in the state and begging them to support our agitation. Don’t forget that when we met the governor, he specifically told us to go and lobby other Obas and chiefs outside Ogun West for support. That is what we are doing now. As traditional rulers, we cannot fold our arms any longer. This is not a job for politicians alone,” an Oba from the zone told The Nation.

    Aspirants

To further portray the seriousness of the district to produce the next governor of the state, an array of qualified and determined aspirants has emerged on the scene from Yewa and Awori lands. While most of them are gunning for the plum job on the platform of the ruling APC, a few are hoping to use the opposition PDP as vehicle to get to the Government House in 2019.

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, the representative of Lagos West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, popularly known as Yayi, is one of the frontline aspirants that have emanated from the zone to vie for the APC governorship ticket. Currently tagged “Lagos based” by his critics, the Chartered Accountant turned politician no doubt enjoys widespread support across the state.

The Chief of Staff to Governor Amosun, Chief Tolu Odebiyi, son of the late Senator Jonathan Odebiyi, is another leading contender. Though not a well-known political figure in the state, he is believed to be enjoying the support of the incumbent governor and the leadership of the party in the state. This, many people say, may be his main strength.

Also in the race is Gboyega Isiaka, currently a member of the opposition PDP. He was the party’s candidate for the governorship in 2015 but lost to Amosun. He had earlier contested the same seat in 2011 on the platform of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN). He lost on that occasion too in spite of having the backing of the then Governor Daniel. But his supporters say he is more equipped to clinch the seat in 2019.

Rt. Hon. Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, is also interested in the governorship ticket of the ruling party. A youthful politician who enjoys good followership within and outside his Yewa North Constituency, Adekunbi is seen by many as the only man who can build on the legacies of the current administration, having served as the number three man since the inception of the current regime.

Aside the aspirants named above, there are other Yewa sons and daughters seeking to contest the next governorship election in 2019. These include Senator Iyabo Anisulowo and Hon. Abiodun Akinlade, amongst others. All the aspirants are currently oiling their political machineries ahead of 2019, according to their aides and supporters.

    Obstacles within and without

But it may not be a smooth sail to Okemosan Government House for Ogun West in 2019, even with the open support being given to them by Amosun. This is because some notable aspirants from other zones of the state, especially in Ogun East are reportedly rearing to go into the governorship contest in 2019.

Contrary to expectations in some quarters that Amosun’s open endorsement of Ogun West as the next zone to produce the governor of the state will put paid to the aspiration of some notable politicians from Ogun East, The Nation learnt that not a few of them have vowed to go ahead with the dream of governing the state in 2019 with or without the support of the governor.

Amosun has warned that he will not support any aspirant from Ogun East and Ogun Central who is aspiring to succeed him in 2019. According to him, he had already told his associates and aides from the two zones to forget about the governorship in 2019. But it appears his words were not enough to deter the aspirations of some of his allies.

From Ogun East, politicians like Senator Lekan Mustapha, Chief Jide Awosedo, Otunba Rotimi Paseda and Hon. Ladi Adebutu are already everywhere trying to garner support for their 2019 governorship aspiration while the likes of Prince Dapo Abiodun and Senator Gbenga Kaka are being fervently awaited by their supporters to announce their interest in the race.

While Adebutu is currently a member of the opposition PDP, Abiodun, an ally of Governor Amosun, is a chieftain of the ruling APC. Paseda is still in the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), the platform which he used to contest the governorship in 2015. It is still unclear the parties the others will use to pursue their aspirations if and when they openly declare interest in the race.

But whichever way it goes and whoever else joins the race, it is definitely going to be a crowded race and this poses a serious challenge to the agitation of the people of Ogun West to have the governorship zoned to them. How ready they are to surmount the looming challenges as 2019 draws closer will likely determine how far

  • Ogun 2019: Majority Leader urges continuity

The Majority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Yinka Mafe, has called on the people of the state to be prepared to cast their vote once again for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in order to ensure the continuation of the good governance being enjoyed in the state.

Mafe, who represents Sagamu State constituency 1 in the assembly, made the call while speaking during a live program on the state-owned Ogun State Television (OGTV). The Emuren-born politician added that continuity in governance is one of the basic strength of democracy. He thanked the good people of the state for standing firmly with the ruling APC.

A second-term state legislator, Mafe, while responding to questions about his next political move, said“ I have served as a state legislator for two terms. My desire is to represent my people as a legislator again, preferably, at a higher level.”

  • Ogun 2019 and the Yayi phenomenon

The word “phenomenon” has been described as “a remarkable development” by the dictionary and that is exactly what Senator Solomon Adeola has brought to the politics of Ogun State.

Yayi as he is better known means different things to things to different people. To some he is a Tokunbo (Returnee), to others he is an enigma, a brilliant and highly cerebral personality with passion for human emancipation hence the sobriquet “Yayi”. Sen Adeola’s sojourn back to his place of origin in Ogun West Senatorial District to contribute his quota to the realization of Governorship aspiration of the people who have long been in a serious political and economic quagmire in the scheme of things didn’t just start overnight. May be he believes in what Benjamin Franklin said that “Those who give up liberty for safety deserve neither liberty nor safety”, hence the journey back home.

Sen Adeola has always been conscious of his ancestral origin and had never hidden his desire to identify with anything Ogun West even while operating in Lagos. I remember vividly as a serving corps member in the Lagos House of Assembly back in 2005, I was hosted by him on hearing that I hail from Yewa part of Ogun State, and with a standing order never to hesitate to call on him any time I feel like because we are brothers.

Fast forward to 2012 when I visited Abuja to see my then boss in the Lagos House of Assembly, I inquired about how the then Hon Adeola was doing as a member of the House of Representatives, “remarkable, brilliant and  phenomenon” are the adjectives my former boss used. He told me how the man did not care to let the world know he is from Yewa despite being a representative from Lagos State. I was told how he was given the chairman of the all important House Committee on Public Account as matter of trust in his capacity to perform and he never for once disappointed.

Again in 2015, Sen Yayi decided to take a dive into Ogun polity where he hails from but was stoutly rebuffed with politics of exclusion that played out then. As God will have it, he is presently representing Lagos West Senatorial District. Today, Yayi has indicated his desire to help in the actualization of governorship bid of Ogun West people which has always resulted in stillbirth since the state was created in 1976 because of all kinds of gerrymandering and internal self immolations bordering on greed without any thoughts for the people.

Since joining the fray, the political nomenclature of Ogun polity has changed. The polity in the state is getting more sophisticated, modernized and competitive. Yayi has brought finesse, experience, exposure, temerity, resilience, unwavering commitments to common goods, determination to a purposeful goal, meticulous planning and fear of God while interfacing with the people. Ogun political landscape is changing courtesy the Yayi phenomenon. Despite high levels distraction and political hoopla of ancestral background coming from those feeling threatened by Yayi’s ascendancy, his high sense of concentration and eye are fixed on the ball.

When you talk of Senator Solomon Adeola, you are talking of a man of incredible productivity and exhibition at all times in any task undertaken. A man of contagious inspiration; whose enthusiasm is a propeller of progress, development, good life and wisdom.

The Yayi phenomenon is real in Ogun State, gaining more admirers and sympathizers almost on daily basis.

Ogun 2019: Anxiety grips APC over Adebutu’s rumoured defection

There is anxiety in Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC), following feelers that Ladipupo Adebutu, the Chairman House Committee on Rural Development, may be perfecting plans to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defect to APC, reports Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan

THERE is palpable tension and anxiety within the Ogun State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress following indications that the member representing Remo Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Honourable Ladipupo Adebutu, may be planning to dump the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and pitch his tent with the ruling party ahead of the 2019 General Elections.

Adebutu, a staunch member of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the PDP, is the son of billionaire Adebutu Kessington and an ally of former Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel. The younger Adebutu had before now, left no one in doubt of his readiness to contest for the governorship position of the state in 2019.

Reliable sources within the ruling APC, within and outside the state, revealed to The Nation that the Iperu-Remo born politician, may have resolved to move over to the ruling party in order to achieve his 2019 political ambition following the unending crisis that has crippled his current party, the PDP.

The Nation gathered that Adebutu, who before now is an unrelenting critic of the current APC administration in the state, led by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, may have started the process of his defecting to the ruling party by reaching out to some prominent APC leaders within and outside the state to facilitate a soft landing for himself and his associates.

The lawmaker, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Rural Development, according to a close aide of his who craved anonymity, has been bothered about the dwindling political fortunes of the PDP in Ogun State, occasioned by the intra party crisis that has seen the troubled party divided into factions after the 2015 General Elections in the state.

The PDP in Ogun State today is divided into about three factions with each of the factions loyal to a political leader of their choice. While the most prominent faction remains the Omo-Ilu group, led by the member representing Ogun East in the senate, Senator Buruji Kashamu, another leading faction is that being controlled by Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Hon. Adebutu.

“The trouble within the PDP in Ogun State is enough for any serious politician to consider a shift to another party. It is wrong for anybody to accuse Hon. Adebutu of jumping from one party to another. As a politician who is desirous of contesting and winning elections, it is not out of place for him to be considering his political future very seriously.

“I can tell you that as a political group, we in LADO Organisation have had reasons to worry about the current state of the PDP. We have also had reasons to ponder on possible options for the purpose of achieving our political aspirations. This is not just about Ladi Adebutu, it is about the entire political family,” an aide of the lawmaker told The Nation.

It was also gathered that the lawmaker, through his prominent father and other dignitaries, may have commenced discussion with the governor over his plan to join the ruling party. A source very close to the leadership of the party in the state said recently that there were talks about Adebutu and some other chieftains of his faction of the PDP defecting to the APC.

“It is being discussed both within the ruling APC and the opposition PDP. We are hearing of their intention to join us. This has been on for a while now and although some of them have been denying it, some others have been openly fraternizing with our party in recent times. I even heard that Adebutu’s father met and discuss the possibility of his son joining the ruling party with Governor Amosun,” our source added.

It is also part of the talks going around that the lawmaker may also be considering trading his governorship ambition which he has worked really hard on within the opposition PDP, for a senatorial ticket, if he eventually defects into the ruling APC. Sources claim this new line of thinking is part of the deal being brokered with Governor Amosun by emissaries on Adebutu’s behalf.

“Knowing fully well that it may not be easy for him to defect into the APC and promptly grab the governorship ticket ahead of the 2019 election, Lado is willing to concede his guber ambition for a senatorial ticket if given a chance in the ruling party. Another reason for his willing to take the senatorial ticket may be his desire to square up against Kashamu in the contest for who represents Ogun East in the National Assembly,” another source added.

    Mounting opposition

But if Adebutu and his associates are thinking the alleged move to APC will be welcome by all chieftains and members of the ruling party, then they are mistaken as many persons and groups within the ruling party are prepared to resist the defection of the lawmaker. The Nation gathered that ever since news of the planned defection hit the streets again during the week, not a few chieftains and members of the party have spoken up against it.

Last Thursday, a group of youths who came from three local government areas in Remo Federal Constituency, converged on the APC secretariat in Sagamu as early as 9.00am in the morning, to register what they described as their opposition to any form of co-operation between the ruling party and the camp of Hon. Adebutu.

The protesters, who claimed to have informed the leadership of the party in the zone of their intention to visits the secretariat in writing long before the day, chanted songs and lampooned those they claimed are working for the alleged defection of the lawmaker into the APC. According to them, only enemies of the ruling party in Remo zone will wish that Adebutu and his people should join the party.

Speaking to The Nation at the secretariat, located on Makun road, Sagamu, the spokesperson of the group, Prince Oluwaseun Adeosin, said APC youths in the zone are up against any plan by Adebutu to either defect into the party or have any working arrangement with the party because they cherish the peace currently being enjoyed within the party in the zone.

The former state youth leader of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), who is currently the Ogun East senatorial coordinator of APC Youth Network (APCYN), explained further that they will not stand idly and watch some defectors import the culture of violence for which the PDP is known for in the zone, into the ruling party.

“I want to tell you that today, we are here to openly say that we don’t want Adebutu and his people to come into the APC. It is not for any reason other than the fact that APC in Remo zone here in Ogun State is one happy peaceful family. We are not known to fight ourselves or engage in any form of violent politicking.

“However, the same cannot be said of PDP here in our zone. The violence nature of their brand of politics is legendary and that is what we fear. That is what we are up against. We will resist any attempt by any defector to import violence into our happy family just because they are looking for a platform to achieve their political interests.

“We informed the leaders of the party that we will be here. We sent a letter to our leaders to tell them that we will tell the world that we don’t want these PDP elements among us here. Only enemies of the ruling party in Remo zone will wish that Adebutu and his people should join the party. Those working for the alleged defection of the lawmaker into the APC are working against the party,” he said.

Speaking in the same vein, a chieftain of the APC in the zone, Alhaji Bariu Adetunji Shoda, described the rumored defection plan of the lawmaker as unacceptable to party members in Remoland. The septuagenarian, who was State Organising Secretary of the defunct Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) and now a member of the APC Elders’ Forum in his local government, cautioned against indiscriminate acceptance of PDP members into the ruling party as the 2019 General Elections approach.

“While many people will expect us to be happy over this alleged defection plot, I want to say it categorically that most of our party members are unhappy to hear that Adebutu and his people may be joining us. Like you said, this is still a rumour but it is fast gaining ground. We don’t want to take chances. That is why many people are speaking out very seriously against it.

“What we are saying is that those who worked vigorously against our party when we were still struggling to build it should not be allowed to just come in and reap where they didn’t sow. I recall the many effort leaders, like my humble self, put into getting the likes of Adebutu to join the APC back then. Our appeal was that we wanted a party where Remo people will be united.

“But they rejected us and worked against the party,” he recalled, warning that any attempt to force Adebutu on APC lawmaker in the zone will create serious crisis. “We don’t just trust these people. I am afraid that if they are allowed to come into the APC, the unity and oneness for which APC in Remoland is known will be threatened,” he added.

Efforts to reach the lawmaker for his reaction to the development proved abortive as he could not be reached on his mobile phone numbers as at press time. But it is not the first time Adebutu will be fingered in a defection plot into the ruling APC. However, his camp has consistently denied any such plan by the lawmaker.

The last time was last January when Afeez Bello, a legislative aide to Adebutu, debunked the claim, saying, “our attention has just been drawn to an online publication which purports a planned defection of Honourable Oladipupo Adebutu, Member House of Representatives, and Chairman, House Committee on Rural Development, to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

“For the avoidance of doubt and especially for the sake of our teeming supporters who might be hoodwinked into believing the said story to be true, the publication is false in all matters particular, there is no iota of truth in it and the suggestion or assumption can only exist in the wild imagination of the writer. We are not unmindful of the political undercurrents behind this false publication, and this goes on to confirm the rising profile of Hon. Adebutu in the political landscape of Ogun State and Nigeria in general.

“We need to remind our people about the obvious missing links in the said write up; it does not add up logically that Hon. Adebutu who was elected popularly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), holding an unprecedented overwhelming mandate of the people, did not join the APC even when there was hope of a successful governance by the ruling party, and it fails logic and reasoning that he will do so now that the party has demonstrated lack of capacity to govern.

“Perhaps this wild speculation would have looked possible and plausible if the APC had shown compassion for humanity which is the hallmark of Hon. Adebutu’s brand of politics, but sadly the welfare of the people appears not to be on the core agenda of the ruling party.

“However, one thing we have been able to take away from this false report is that Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu has climbed to such high pedestal in the politics of Ogun State so much that his name must be drawn into an obvious political propaganda warfare by all aspiring politicians, and we have no option than to wish them luck as we have strong faith in the capacity of the very enlightened people of Ogun State to discern truth from falsehoods at all times”.

    Ogun 2019: Who succeeds Amosun?

Two years into Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s second term, the debate over which zone should produce his successor has begun. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN writes on the politics of zoning in the Gateway State.

THE race for the 2019 governorship election has begun in earnest in Ogun State. Aspirants across party lines have started hitting the road, storming the palaces of traditional rulers and homes of political gladiators, to solicit for support for their governorship bid. This sort of consultations have increased political tempo in the Gateway State.
The politics of Ogun is sophisticated. The state has produced many gladiators. They include: former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Head of the Interim National Government (ING), Chief Ernest Shonekan; Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo; former governors, Chief Olusegun Osoba and Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka; the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo; the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Abiola; and the late Afenifere leader, Chief Abraham Adesanya.
In Ogun, there exists an unwritten agreement on the zoning of the governorship among the three senatorial districts. But, this has not been strictly observed. Two of the three senatorial districts – Ogun East and Ogun Central — have dominated the governorship in the political history of the state. The Central district is made up of Egba people; East is composed of Ijebus and the West is populated by the Yewa and the Awori people.
The late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo who governed the state from 1979 to 1983 and Otunba Gbenga Daniel who was at the helm of affairs between 2003 and 2011 are from Ogun East. Similarly, the Central district has produced two governors: Chief Olusegun Osoba (1991 to 1993 and 1999 to 2003) and the incumbent Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who has been in charge since 2011.
The West district has not had the opportunity to govern the state since it was created 41 years ago. The last time the Yewa people came close to producing a governor was in 2011, when two of their sons contested for the coveted seat on different political platforms. The political rivalry between Obasanjo and Daniel then denied the zone the opportunity to produce the governor. The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was polarised in the build up to the election. The Obasanjo group held a primary that produced former Major-General Adetunji Olurin (retd) as governorship candidate of the PDP, while the Daniel faction formed a new party, the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), to enable its candidate, Gboyega Isiaka, vie for the governorship.
Both Olurin and Isiaka hail from Yewa. The hope of their people was dashed as they lost to Amosun. What should have been a bloc vote from the area was inevitably split between them.
Now that another governorship election will hold in two years time, the questions being asked by political observers are: where will the next governor come from? Will Ogun Central and East concede the position to Ogun West in the interest of equity, fairness and justice? Are the people of Yewa ready to break the jinx in 2019?
Both Ogun East and Central districts are in the habit of forming alliances to facilitate the emergence of one of their sons as the governor, at the expense of the Ogun West. An opinion leader from the zone, Chief Adetunji Elegbede, is not happy with the way the two other zones are monopolising the position, “as if to say it is a taboo for Yewa and Awori in Ogun West to rule the state”.
Elegbede said: “The struggle of Yewa people for the governorship seat is dated back to the Second Republic when the late Senator Jonathan Odebiyi indicated interest to contest for governorship in 1979. But, the leadership of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) prevailed on him to step down for the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, an Ijebu man from Ogun East. Instead, Odebiyi contested for the senatorial seat which he won. Indeed, he was the UPN Senate Leader from 1979 to 1983. Those alive around that period would bear me out that Odebiyi performed very well at the Senate. Those saying that Ogun West lacks qualified and competent people to govern the state are being economical with the truth.
“Again in 1991, one of our leaders, the late Professor Afolabi Olabimtan, sought for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship ticket. He lost the primary to Osoba by a narrow margin. The people of Ogun West are not inferior, but through the collaborative efforts of Ogun East and Central, our people have been marginalised and as a result the position has become elusive.”
Analysts believe that the consistent failure of the Yewa/Awori people to agree on the choice of candidate has been the major impediment working against their ambition to produce a governor. They recall that the greatest undoing of the zone in the 2011 governorship election was that two of its sons, Olurin of the PDP and Isiaka of the PPN, contested against each other. A political activist, Dr Olanrewaju Adeeyo, said what happened in 2011 was part of the conspiracy theory to stop Ogun West from ever producing governor for the state.
He said: “Obasanjo who fielded Olurin is from Ogun Central, while Daniel who sponsored Isiaka comes from Ogun East. The two of them succeeded in using our sons from the West district to truncate our long-time ambition to produce governor for the first time. The conspiracy paved the way for Amosun from Ogun Central to emerge as governor.”
Adeeyo said it is high time the Egbas and the Ijebus realise that Ogun State is a tripod and that the Yewa/Awori people have equal rights to aspire to any position, including governorship seat. He said: “They should abide with zoning formula which has become a permanent feature in Nigerian politics. The idea of treating a group of people as inconsequential is dangerous. If we continue this way, the people of Ogun West will react violently. It is better the political gladiators to concede the governorship to the zone in 2019.”
However, the idea of giving the Yewa/Awori people a chance to produce the governor after the expiration of the tenure of Governor Amosun in 2019 appears to be gaining popularity among political stakeholders. At least, both Obasanjo and Amosun have agreed that the next governor should come from the zone.
Speaking at a function in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Obasanjo said the zone should be allowed to produce Amosun’s successor, in the interest of equity and justice. He said it is unfair that the zone has not produced governor since the state was created four decades ago.
The former president said: “If you don’t make them (the Yewas and Aworis) to feel they belong, you are inviting trouble and breeding fertile ground for terrorism in the state.”
Similarly, Amosun had never hidden his preference for a Yewa/Awori indigene to succeed him in office come 2019. He made it a campaign issue in 2015, when he addressed the political leaders from the zone, saying he will ensure that the person that will take over from him would come from Ogun West. A source within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) confided in our correspondent that Amosun is still favourably disposed to keeping that promise to work towards the zone producing a governor for the first time since the creation of the state. Amosun was quoted as saying on television recently during a live media chat that: “I have ruled out governorship aspirants from Ogun Central; I would not endorse their ambitions, because the zone produced me as incumbent.”
The source added: “But, the zone needs to put its house in order. The aspirants should work for the interest of their zone. If they fail to make sacrifice and harmonise their interests for a collective purpose, they may not have it again.”
Analysts are of the view that the two major parties, the APC and the PDP, may pick their governorship candidates from Ogun West in 2019. Elegbede said he expressed the fear early during the build-up to the April 2, 2011 governorship polls. He recalled what he said then that the disagreement between Obasanjo and Daniel over the Yewa’s aspiration was a major obstacle to the actualisation of that ambition.
However, he said the electorate in the zone have learnt some useful lessons in the previous failed attempts and are now determined to give all it takes to win the coveted seat this time. He said: “The Aworis and Yewas will speak with one voice at the poll in 2019. If all the registered parties pick their governorship candidates from Ogun West, we know the party we will cast our vote for. We will use the bloc vote advantage to break the jinx. We have had enough of divide and rule tactics.”
Curiously, most of the aspirants that have shown interest so far to succeed Amosun are from Ogun West district. Could it be that the political gladiators across party lines have agreed to zone the governorship to Ogun West?
Those reportedly jostling for the APC governorship ticket include: Chief Tolu Odebiyi, Senator Solomon Adeola, Prince Suraj Adekunbi, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo and Senator Gbolahan Dada. All of them hail from Ogun West. The only known aspirant from the PDP is Hon. Ladi Adebutu, a member of the House of Representatives. He is from Ogun East.
Odebiyi is the Chief of Staff to Governor Amosun. He is the son of the late politician, Senator Jonathan Odebiyi. The younger Odebiyi is a successful technocrat, industrialist and a grassroots politician whose tentacles are spread across all the senatorial districts. A graduate of Building Construction and Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, Massachusetts, the United States of America, Odebiyi has carved a niche for himself in property development and investment. Besides, he has rescued many indigent citizens of the state, regardless of their party affiliation, from the jaws of poverty.
Senator Adeola is an experienced politician. He currently represents Lagos West Senatorial District in the upper legislative chamber. An indigene of Ilaro, the political headquarters of Ogun West, Adeola started his political career in 2003, when he was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly. He was a member of the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2015. He had wanted to represent Ogun West in the Senate in the current dispensation, but he didn’t succeed. However, luck smiled on him when he won the APC ticket for Lagos West. Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has touched many lives through his empowerment programmes. A chartered accountant, Adeola was Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public Account from 2011 to 2015.
Senator Anisulowo is not new in governorship race. She was the governorship candidate of All Peoples Party (APP) in 1999. Her career in politics dates back to 1991, when she was appointed the Secretary to the Local Government in Ogun State. A year later, she became a commissioner in state’s Civil Service Commission. She was elected a senator in 2003. Under the regime of the late General Sani Abacha, Anisulowo served as a Minister of State for Education.
Hon. Adekunbi is the current Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly. He served in that capacity also between 2011 and 2015. Senator Dada represents Ogun West district. A prince from Ota, he trained abroad in financial management.
Hon. Adebutu is from Iperu in Ogun East. He represents Remo Federal constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the PDP. The son of the multi-billionaire businessman, Chief Adebutu Kessington, is trying to rally the support of the Ijebu people to actualise his ambition to occupy the Oke-Mosan Government House.
