  • Truck crushes three to death in Ogun

    Three persons were on Wednesday evening killed in an accident involving a truck loaded with granite, around Talabi village, inbound Abeokuta on the Abeokuta /Sagamu Expressway.

    Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Spokesman for Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Thursday.

    Akinbiyi explained that the accident which occurred in the evening, involved a Honda car marked NPK 186 PM, Toyota Corolla marked FST 04 ER and a truck with registration number KJA 931 XH.

    “The Honda car inbound Sagamu had tyre burst, lost control and veered to the other side of the road, hitting the oncoming Toyota Corolla inbound Abeokuta .

    “However, the truck that was behind the Toyota car in an attempt to avoid hitting other vehicles from behind veered into the bush and in the process hit three onlookers who were standing by the roadside, killing them on the spot.

    “Six people were involved in the accident, three male adults and three female adults. Three persons were killed while three others were injured,’’ he said.

    Akinbiyi noted that the accident vehicles were taken to Ibara Divisional Police Office, while the driver of the truck had also been arrested.

    He said that the injured were taken to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), while the corpses of the deceased had been deposited at the General Hospital, Ijaye in Abeokuta.

    Reacting to the accident, Mr Clement Oladele, the state Sector Commander, urged motorists to obey advice given to them by its rescue team in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

    Oladele told NAN in Ota, Ogun that the truck driver had earlier been flagged down by the rescue operation’s team.

    The sector commander said that the advice became necessary for the motoring public because such an accident scene could be dangerous and sometime could lead to other accidents if necessary prevention was not taken.

    According to him, the team was trying to rescue victims from a fatal accident while this speeding truck was flagged down but refused to stop and rammed into the accident victims.

    “The incident was unfortunate and FRSC condoles with the families of the victims.

    “I pray that the Lord will grant the families the fortitude to bear the loss and grant the deceased eternal rest,’’ Oladele said.

    He said that legal proceedings would commence against the reckless driver.

    Oladele, however, warned motorists to desist from disobeying rescue operation team’s advice in order not to face the wrath of the laws.

  • Two die, two others injured in Ogun accident

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said two persons were killed while two others were injured in an accident involving two vehicles around Animashaun Estate on Idlroko road in Ogun State yesterday.

    Mr Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident happened at about 5.30 p.m.

    He said that a Mack Truck with registration number AAA 330 XX heading towards Sango-Ota from Idi lroko lost control due to brake failure, crossed the road divider and rammed into a Mazda car marked AAA 152 BK.

    “The corpses of the victims had been deposited at Ifo General Hospital, while the survivors were receiving treatment at General Hospital, Sango-Ota,” he said.

    He advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles were in proper condition and be cautious during the Yuletide in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

     

  • Eight Edo indigenes returning from Spain die in Ogun accident

    Eight persons, comprising five men and three women, died yesterday in an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    The Hummer bus conveying them reportedly rammed into a Mack truck, marked (Lagos) MUS 730 XN, around 8:30 a.m at the Wictech stretch of the expressway, about two kilometres from Danco filling station.

    The victims – believed to be Edo State indigenes who just flew into the country from Spain – were said to have chartered the bus, marked (Edo) BEN 313 YX, in the fleet of Iyare Motors and heading to Benin, the Edo State capital, for an engagement.

    Our reporter sighted operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) evacuating victims, clearing obstructions and directing traffic on the scene.

    TRACE’s spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi said the driver of the speeding Hummer bus rammed into the rear of the truck in an attempt to overtake it.

    Akinbiyi said seven of the victims died on the scene while one other died later.

    The remains of the victims have been deposited at the morgue of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu, Ogun State.

    Two others, who rescued alive, were said tom have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

    FRSC’s Public Education Officer (PEO) Florence Okpe said speeding by the Benin-bound commercial bus caused the accident.

    She said: “The suspected cause of the crash was a speeding commercial bus travelling from Lagos to Benin in Edo State. It rammed into the truck ahead of it.

    “The number of people involved is 14, comprising six men and eight women, all adults. Four women were injured.

    “The FRSC rescue team evacuated the injured to OOUTH in Sagamu and the bodies have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

    “The Ogun State Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Clement Oladele, reiterated the need for drivers to always travel at recommended speed limit because “life has no duplicate”.

    He added: “Passengers should not abdicate their responsibility of cautioning their drivers whenever they engage in reckless driving.”

  • Car crushes three men to death in Ogun

    Three young men believed to be friends were crushed to death on Wednesday afternoon at the Adedero village, off Kobape – Siun Road, Ogun State, by a hit- and run driver.

    The victims hailed from northern part of the country.

    It was learnt that the trio were standing at the roadside when the speeding vehicle veered of its track and knocked them down.

    Two of them died on the spot while third victim was taken to a private hospital in Abeokuta by the Operatives of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE).

    He died some minutes later.

    The Nation gathered the driver was driving a private vehicle and heading to Abeokuta along with his family members.

    He was intercepted by a police team attached to the Quick Response Squad (QRS) stationed at the entrance of the Governor’s Office in Oke – Mosan.

    The Public Relations Officer of the TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, said the remains of the victims have deposited at the State hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta.

    He said: “it was hit and run situation and two of the victims are all confirmed dead while the third victim was been taken to Joseph and Christianah Hospital, Oke Ilewo, Abeokut, but later died.”

     

     

  • Bus crushes two women to death in Ogun

    A commercial bus on Monday crushed two women to death in Ifo, Ogun State.

    An eyewitness said the Mazda bus with registration number KRD 689 XH veered off the road and crushed the two women standing by the roadside at the Ilepa – Ifo stretch of the Lagos – Abeokuta expressway.

    The victims are said to be Fulani women.

    The driver of the bus, conductor and passengers abandoned the vehicle at the scene of the accident and fled.

    The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident to The Nation, blamed it on “dangerous driving.”

    Akinbiyi said the remains of the victims had been taken to the Ifo General Hospital Mortuary by the police.

    One person died yesterday and another injured in a multiple accident at Mortuary Junction of the expanded Ijaiye-Idi-Aba-OGTV road in Abeokuta.

    The accident, which involved three vehicles – Iveco truck, registered as (Lagos) SMK 152 XE; a Mazda car, AAB 267 AA, and Honda,  FST 321 EP, occurred under the bridge by Iyana Mortuary in Ogun State.

    The truck rammed into the Mazda, following a brake failure.

    The Mazda reportedly stopped at a redlight. The truck, losing control, ran into the Mazda.

    Sources said the Mazda driver died instantly; the truck driver sustained injuries.

    Spokesman of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) Babatunde Akinbiyi said the  brakes of the truck failed.

    He said: “The accident was caused by speeding, reckless driving and reported brake failure on the part of the truck driver. Maybe we need to recommend speed breakers on that axis of the road to slow down vehicles near the traffic light.

    “The presumed dead and the injured driver have been evacuated to the State General Hospital at Ijaiye.”

     

     

  • Truck crushes woman to death in Ogun

    A mentally-challenged woman was crushed to death along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on Friday evening.

    Three other people were seriously wounded in the accident.

    Our correspondent gathered that the driver of the MACK truck with registration number KSF 802 XC, lost control of the wheel, veered off the road and crushed the woman to death.

    The woman was at the roadside when the truck hit her.

    The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Enforcement and Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the remains of the victim had been taken to Fakoya Hospital’s morgue in Sagamu.

  • Truck crushes nursing mother in Ogun

    A truck crushed a nursing mother to death in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday morning.

    Two other persons were seriously injured in the accident that occurred at Orile – Elmo village along Abeokuta – Sagamu expressway.

    The Nation gathered that the truck marked PKP 464 XA, crushed the woman and injured two others while they were crossing the road at 9:15 a.m.

    The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State traffic agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the woman died on the spot while the driver of the truck ran away.

    Akinbiyi said policemen are making efforts to evacuate the truck off the road.

    “Reckless driving caused the accident. The truck ran over the woman while attempting to cross the road to other side of the Siun road. The remains of the woman had been handed over to family,” he said.

    A man, his wife and their son died yesterday in an accident at the Sagamu(Ogun State) stretch of the Lagos – Ore Expressway.
    The couple’s two other children were injured.
    It was gathered that the couple was returning to Lagos from their hometown in Enugu, when the accident occurred.
    The family was travelling in a black Honda CRV marked KRD933DD, along with their three teenage children. Their vehicle crashed into a moving vehicle from the rear.
    The couple died immediately and the son died at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, where he was receiving treatment.
    The survivors are said to be receiving treatment in the same hospital.
    The Ogun State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Clement Oladele, told reporters that the CRV ran into a moving truck with the number plate, JJJ107XD, from the rear.
    Oladele, who said the accident occurred at 2pm, explained that the FRSC had contacted the deceased’s family from one of the contacts on the phone recovered at the scene.
    He said: “We have contacted the family from the contacts on one of the telephones recovered from the couple.
    “We are still expecting them. We learnt the couple and their children were returning from a trip to their home state in Enugu.
    “We are appealing to motorists, as we have always done, to always observe speed limit while on the highway.”

  • Four die in Ogun accident

    Four persons died and three others were injured yesterday in an accident on the Abeokuta – Ibadan Expressway.

    The accident, which occurred in the night at Alakija village near Olodo in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, involved a truck conveying cement   and a Toyota Picnic marked (OYO) BDJ 427 SX.

    State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement agency (TRACE) spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi said the driver of the Toyota crashed into the truck marked YKS 194 XA, from the rear.

    Akinbiyi said the driver and three other passengers died immediately. Three other passengers were injured.

    The truck driver and his boy came out unscathed.

    The TRACE spokesman said the victims’ remains have been deposited at the morgue of the State General Hospital, Abeokuta while the injured are receiving treatment at a private hospital in Odeda.
