  • Ogun communities demand good roads

Residents of some communities in the Agbara axis of Ogun State have called on the state government to reciprocate the good nature of the people of the area by providing basic amenities that have been lacking in the communities since the creation of the state, in spite of their immense contributions to the socio-economic growth of the state.

During a warning protest tagged ‘Save Atan-Igbesa-Agbara’ held to draw the attention of the government and relevant authorities to the deplorable state of their roads, the president of Igbesa Youth Assembly (IYA), Comrade Jide Aina, appealed to the governor,  Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, to  give the roads the desired face-lift.

“What is generated from Atan- Igbesa- Agbara should be used to develop our communities. Our axis provides the state with lots of revenues, we deserve better attention. I want to plead with Governor Amosun to imitate other state governors who take on federal government projects because of the impact on citizens,” Ganiu Fagbeni, a resident, pleaded.

The Aro of Igbesaland, Chief M.A Sanusi, said out of the 150 commercial vehicles plying the routes, less than five are still in operation due to the bad roads. “Motor bikes are now our main means of transportation. As chiefs, we oftentimes carry our crowns in bags as we are forced to ride on Okada too. I’m appealing to the governor to do something about these roads to reduce our sufferings in Igbesa.”

In a separate interview, the chairman Igbesa Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Chief B.A Obanla, said the governor had in 2011 promised Atan-Igbesa-Agbara people that he would start and complete the road projects. “But now, all we can see are abandoned pillars. The link road up of Totowu/Itekun, in Ejila Awori, if completed, will make business in Igbesa easier as Lagos will be just a stone throw.”

  • Ogun communities protest bad roads

Anti-government protests erupted yesterday at industrial areas of Atan, Agbara and Igbesa in Ogun State.

Residents, small business operators and community leaders marched on the streets over the deplorable state of roads in their communities.

The protesters, in their hundreds, said they could no longer live with the worsening roads, following alleged negligence by the state government.

They also accused the state government of deliberately inflicting havoc on them and their socio-economic activities by abandoning the road repairs in the area.

The angry protesters, who were at the Lusada junction of Agbara Road, also carried placards with various inscriptions, such as: “Let our tax deduction count, give us good roads”; “Osinbajo, save Agbara/Igbesa/Lusada”; “Bad road is aiding insecurity in our communities” and “No good roads, no massive votes in 2019.”

The communities said they had been suffering untold hardship due to bad roads for nearly a decade.

According to them, the last palliative measures on their access roads were carried out by the State Road Maintenance Agency (OGROMA) under Gbenga Daniel’s administration.

The Otunba Amona of Igbesa, Chief Adewunmi Durojaiye, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, accused the state and Federal governments of insensitivity to their plight.

The community leader threatened to ensure that there would no votes for the government, if the roads were not fixed soon.

Durojaiye regretted that despite the fact that the areas generate about 85 per cent of the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), the zone remained largely neglected in the provision of socio-economic infrastructure.

The Igbesa chief alleged that industries in the area were relocating to Sagamu due to the bad condition of the roads.

He said: “This is a warning protest and we are here because of the deplorable condition of the roads. The state government is trying to relocate all the companies to somewhere in Sagamu.

“This is a 15-kilometre road to Atan that the government cannot do. This government is deceitful. They came here in 2015 with caterpillars when the election was coming with a promise to build the roads, if they were re-elected. But as soon as they got our votes, they abandoned the project.

“There are no good roads here, where they get the large chunk of their revenue. But they are constructing 10 lanes from Abeokuta to Sagamu. How do you explain that? It is unthinkable and unacceptable. Therefore, our clarion call to government is to fix our roads.”

Also, the president of the youths, Comrade Jide Aina, threatened total shutdown of the roads, if the government fails to begin construction work on it in the next one month.

  • Ogun communities beg IGP for area command

Ogun communities beg IGP for area command

Residents of Arepo and Warewa in Ogun State have appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim, to site an area command in their community.
They urged the IGP to put one of the three proposed area commands for the state in Warewa.
Siting the command in Warewa will take care of “the grave security challenges posed by the frequent armed robbery and murderous attacks on the Long Bridge between the Julius Berger end of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Warewa,” the residents said in a statement.
The command will also be a strategic way of addressing incessant cases of bunkering and pipeline vandalism in Arepo and its neighbouring communities of Magboro, Ibafo and others by militants, said the statement signed by Arepo Central Community Development Association (ACCDA) President Kehinde Adeyemo and General Secretary Friday Erhabor.
The statement reads: “On behalf of ACCDA and the entire residents of Arepo and Warewa, we write to make a compelling case for a Police Area Command in Warewa.
“Of recent, there has been serious security concerns in Arepo, Warewa and their environs, especially the high incidence of militant activities in Arepo that often take the form of pipeline vandalism, kidnapping, robbery and rapes which call for robust proactive security measures beyond current reactive measures often embarked upon by a regular police division”.
It added: “Of recent, the militants have extended their activities beyond Warewa and Arepo to include OPIC, Isheri and environs.”
The statement said siting the area command at Warewa will check “activities of dare-devil criminals who often attack motorists at night on the Long Bridge between Kara in OPIC area and Warewa”.
These attacks, it said, have become a weekly and almost daily occurrences. All these, the statement noted, required the “strategic attention of the police high command as the regular police division cannot cope with the myriads of security challenges.”
“Already, the strategic location of Warewa Police Division and the fact that it is about the only police division in that axis that still has large undeveloped plots of land running into acres makes it a suitable zone for the location of a police area command”, the statement said.
Praising the Ogun State Command led by Commissioner of Police Ahmed Iliyasu for containing crime in Warewa and Arepo, it said such efforts would yield more results if the area command is sited in Warewa.
The residents also expressed confidence in the state police command leadership and called on the government to provide its officers with security equipment and funds to empower them to fight crime the more.
They called on Governor Ibikunle Amosun to create a Security Trust Fund like that of Lagos to mobilise corporate bodies, individuals and institutions to contribute towards funding the police.

  • 2019: Ogun communities demand House of Reps slot

Political leaders, youths leaders and other eminent personalities in the communities that make up the Offin-Sagamu region of Remoland in Ogun State have appealed to Governor Ibikunle Amosun of the state and leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to give an indigene of the area the party’s Federal House of Representatives ticket during the next general election.
The spokesperson of the Remo Justice and Equity Group (REJEG), Niyi Lawal, said after a meeting of the communities in Sagamu that it was the turn Offin-Sagamu to produce the member that will represent the Remo federal constituency of the state in 2019. According to him, the area is the only part of Remoland that is yet to produce a federal legislator.
He also added that Offin is one of the areas with the highest voting strength in the federal constituency and a renowned stronghold of the ruling party. Lawal, while explaining the resolve of the people of Offin to lay claim to the slot come 2019, said the agitation is in line with the call for unity, based on justice and equity, among Remo towns.
“This agitation is a justifiable one and we are sure our brothers and sisters from other Remo zones will appreciate our claim to the slot when the time comes. They will support our quest based on the recent call for unity, based on justice and equity, among Remo towns. It will be good if we allow Offin to have a feel of the position like the other zones.
“During the 2nd republic, Remo North zone produced Senator Dipo Odujirin as the legislator representing Ogun East in the national assembly. Upon the return to democracy in 1999, Makun-Sagamu zone produced Hon. Babatunde Olokun as the member representing Remo federal constituency at the national assembly.
‘Between 2003 and 2015, Honourables Dave Salako and Taofeek Buraimoh, both from the Ikenne zone of the federal constituency, were the members representing Remo federal constituency at the national assembly. And currently, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, from Iperu, is the House of Representatives member representing us, leaving Offin as the only zone yet to produce a federal legislator in Remoland,” he said.

  • Residents flee as gunmen again storm Ogun communities

Residents flee as gunmen again storm Ogun communities

Residents of 27 villages in Imushin, Ogun State yesterday fled their homes after gunmen raided the areas.

The attack was the second in two days from the suspected militants, who have killed no fewer than 13 people and left several others injured.

This is just as the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the death of two suspected kidnappers last Friday at Elepete, who were shot during a raid by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud  (SARS).

The command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who confirmed their deaths, said one other suspect sustained gunshot injuries but was responding to treatment.

The Nation gathered that although no one was killed yesterday, the gunmen raided shops and carted away villagers’ wares and money.

It was also learnt that three of those injured in Saturday’s attack died later same day in the hospital and have been buried.

Decrying the spate of attacks on the communities, the monarch, Oba Taiwo Adebunmi Gbamboshe, said his people have fled from their homes for fear of the unknown.

He appealed to the government to deploy more security to the riverine communities, adding that those injured and hospitalised should be catered for.

“There are 27 villages in the communities and the residents have fled because of the attacks. There were sporadic gunshots early yesterday morning. My people’s lives are in danger. They have fled and have refused to come back because of fear.

“Despite the presence of police and soldiers, the people are still afraid to return. I am appealing to the government to send more security and to cater for all those who sustained injuries and are hospitalised.

“Also, the owner of the hotel , where some security men raided, was taken away and till now, she has not been found. All the police divisions say they do not have her and never took her. We do not know her whereabouts now,” he said.

Badmos said: “Information was received on Friday at about 1:30pm that some kidnappers had assembled at Elepete, a sprawling community near Ogijo with intent to carry out kidnappings. Based on this, operatives of SARS moved in. “At a point near the creek, one Victor Worimegbe was arrested. He led operatives to TOPKATT Hotel, where others lodged. On getting there, the trio of Ekpokim,  Abule and Ebimobese, on sighting the operatives, tried to escape by firing some shots and the operatives responded.

“In process, Ekpokim and Abule sustained gun injuries and they were rushed to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead.

“Their corpses have been deposited at the general hospital. Ebimobese is undergoing treatment due to injury sustain and he has made useful confessional statements.”

  • Gunmen kill 10, injure many in Ogun communities

Gunmen kill 10, injure many in Ogun communities

A pall of anguish descended on five communities in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State yesterday after a gang of gunmen invaded the area and shot no fewer than 10 persons to death.

Several others were wounded by flying bullets, some others  fell into ditches while they were  scampering to safety in the bedlam sparked by the unexpected shooting at Imagbon, Elepete, Kajola, Glorious land and Ereko.

Residents gave the names of some of the dead as Wasiu Okeowo, Yah Lateef, Oladele Ogundare and one Umoru.

Eye witnesses blamed the attack on   pipeline vandals who had earlier on Friday been dislodged by policemen from their hotel hideout at Elepete.

During the raid, two suspected pipeline vandals were allegedly shot dead.

The wounded among them were taken into safety by their fleeing colleagues.

But at about 12midnight, the runaway vandals returned in fury and well-armed.

They vented their anger on the residents killing and destroying whatever they could lay their hands on.

Goats, fowls and dogs did not escape their fury. They were mercilessly mowed down.

Over 20 shops were broken into and valuables therein carted away.

A resident, whose name cannot be mentioned for safety reasons, said corpses littered the community.

“Some of us came back this morning to see corpses everywhere. Houses were destroyed. Shops vandalised and they even killed our livestock,” he said.

“It was those militants that did it. They have been terrorising us for some time now especially since the government stopped pumping fuel through the pipeline at Elepete.

“Before what they usually did was to come and kill our livestock. They would also attack people with guns and steal from them. The only time people died was during shoot outs between the boys and security agencies.

“But yesterday they came for the residents. It was an attack on the community. I don’t know why they went on the rampage and killed our people like that.

“Already we have counted about 10 corpses and three injured people have been rushed to the hospital. We have been having meetings and policemen from Ogijo division came to see things for themselves.”

Another resident simply identified as Alhaji said the boys had threatened to return and raze their houses.

He pleaded with government to “come and help us before these militants kill us all,” adding they left threatening to come back and torch our houses. They have even marked some building for destruction. We want justice for our people who have been killed.”

Some of the bereaved families have buried their dead. One of those already buried is one Oladele Ogundare.

A source described him as a comfortable and popular man in the area.

“He was a rich guy. Nobody knows why or how he was killed. But I can confirm to you that his family has buried him,” he said source.

Femi, Oladele’s brother said he was shot up to 10 times in his Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) by hoodlums.

He said: “My people called and told me that my brother had been killed. I was not there when it happened. They said it was around past 11pm while he was driving that the militants attacked him.

“They deflated his tyres so that he won’t run. His vehicle was riddled with bullets and the wind screen shattered. One of the bullets hit his leg. He was bleeding and ran out of the car to enable him escape, but they pursued him.

“We saw traces of blood from where he left the car to the place his body was found. We have buried him. He was 44 years and he worked at the airport. He left a wife and three children. All we want is justice. We are crying for justice for our brother and for all those killed by the militants.”

The State Police Command, however, confirmed only three deaths.

Spokesperson for the command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said three persons died and one was injured.

He identified one of the deceased as Waheed Buhari, adding that the man was shot with his daughter.

He said: “Gunmen numbering about 100 stormed the riverine community of Elepo around past 11pm. They shot a man, Waheed Buhari, and his daughter, Miriam. The man later died in the hospital but his daughter is responding to treatment.

“We also found two unidentified bodies. So, what was recorded was three fatalities and one injury. “People are alleging that the gunmen are militants. We cannot say for sure who they are and are not leaving anything to chance since the community is in the riverine area.

“The Police Commissioner has directed a widened scope of investigation and security has been tightened in the affected areas.”

  • Ogun communities in court over land

The Akasun Community in Ogun State has asked an Ota High Court to award them N20million damages over the alleged destructions of their property following a land dispute.

The dispute is over a land measuring 1175.445 hectares at Ere Ward, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area.

It is said to have led to the destruction of over 250 houses worth N15million; carting away of 250 cows, 400 goats, 700 pigs, 800 ducks and other domestic animals.

The claimants also alleged that their food and cash crops such as yam, cassava, maize, palm kernel, plantain, banana, paw-paw worth about N500 million were either destroyed or harvested, eaten and/or taken away by the defendants during an occupation of the land.

In the suit before Justice Solanke, the claimants are also demanding N17million being the estimated value of properties seized, destroyed and or damaged following the defendants’ alleged invasion.

Through their lawyer Nojim Tairu, the claimants are praying the court to hold that a judgment in a case numbered HCT/8A/2001 relating to Aakasun Ilase Village, which was affirmed by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan and the Supreme Court, does not relate to them, nor were they parties to the suit as to be bound by the verdicts.

The claimants want the court to hold that their community’s invasion, seizure/destruction of their properties between August 18, 2010 and May 11, 2011 pursuant to defendant’s purported execution of judgments in MT/25/2011, HCT/8A/2001, CA/1/219/2002 and SC/129/2005 through a warrant of possession dated July 12, 2011, is unlawful, null and void.

The first to sixth defendants, who represent the Asade Family (also known as Oniboto Family of Ado-Odo), through their lawyer, Ayodele A. Omoniyi, said the claimants have no common root of title with distinct holdings, adding there is nothing known as Akasun community land.

“The claimants are tenants on the land at Akasun and derived title from the different individuals they have individually mentioned in individual affidavits sworn to on 20th January, 2012, upon which reliance is hereby placed,” the defendants said.

The court, on April 11, renewed its order made on November 5, 2013, that parties maintain status quo pending the suit’s determination.

The case has been adjourned till June 9.
