    Ogun Customs intercepts N279.5m contraband

    The Ogun Area 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Idiroko, has handed 3,365 parcels and 75 sacks of Cannabis Sativa, alongside 88 cartons of codeine cough syrup seized by its operatives, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    The hard drugs were part of the recent significant seizures made by men of the command in the last two weeks.

    At a press briefing held in Abeokuta, the Controller of the Command, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, promised that the command would eradicate unlawful trading in harmful drugs and other contraband within its operational coverage areas.

     Shuaibu handed over the illicit drugs to the head of the NDLEA, Deputy Commander of Narcotics Alexander Nyigide, who represented Commander Tijani Rabe for proper disposal and further investigation.

    According to Shuaibu, the Duty Payable Value (DPV) of the drugs comprising a total of 2,145 bags, an equivalent of four trailer trucks, foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50kg, 612 bales of second-hand clothing, 843 units of pneumatic used tires, as well as a total of 6,625 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petroleum, was N279.5 million,

    Shuaibu also disclosed that a total of N9.694 million was generated as revenue from baggage assessment, and auction sales of the intercepted PMS.

    Speaking during the handing over of the items to NDLEA officials in the spirit of inter-agency cooperation, CAC Shuaibu said the items being handed over reflected the ongoing efforts of the command at curbing “the distribution of narcotics within the country, which pose significant threats to the health and safety of our citizens.”

    The Ogun 1 Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on Thursday, disclosed that it has seized contraband worth N380,370,911 within the last 23 days.

    The period coincides with the assumption of office of Comptroller James Ojo, as the Controller of the area command.

     Speaking during a press briefing held at the Customs Office in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, Controller Ojo explained that the seizure was achieved, through intensive intelligence strategies and collaborative efforts with the Department of State Services (DSS) and others.

    Ojo said that no fewer than 103 items were intercepted at various locations within the State.

    Ojo said:” During the period under review, the Command made a total seizure of 103 items comprising 90 sacks and 1,309 parcels of cannabis sativa; 1,596 pieces of foreign used pneumatic tyres; 2,922 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each; 32 bales of used clothes, 1,603 cartons of frozen poultry products, and 22,600 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, among others. The cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items amounts to N380,370,911.

    ”It is of essence to state that the aforementioned items were intercepted at different locations within Ogun State, with the aid of intensive intelligence strategies and concerted efforts of our intelligence network such as the Customs Intelligence Unit, DSS, and others. ”

    Ojo emphasized the adverse effects of the seized items on societal well-being, particularly highlighting the dangers of cannabis sativa and foreign-used pneumatic tyres.

     He reiterated the government’s policy on the prohibition of rice importation through land borders, emphasizing the need to promote local production and self-sufficiency to foster economic growth and development.

  • Ogun Customs rakes in N6.7bn, surpasses revenue target

    The Ogun Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N6.7 billion in the first half of this year, according to the Area Controller, Michael Agbara.

    Agbara told reporters at the Idiroko Customs Area Command that the amount represents an excess of 74.5 per cent of the annual revenue target of N3.86billion the Command set for the year.

    He noted that the amount was N2.8 billion above the revenue generated between January and June 2018.

    During the period under review, he said the command made 549 seizures.

    Impounded were  197 used vehicles popularly known as ‘Tokunbo’, among other contraband.

    He said: “The seizure of over 29,905 bags of rice in the first half year of 2019 was indeed a landmark among numerous successes recorded, compared to 15, 976 bags of rice seized during the corresponding period of 2018.

    “Also seized were 466 kegs of vegetable oil (25 litres each), 27 units of motorcycles used as means of conveyance, 9,407 pairs of new shoes and 1,042 pairs, 427 cartons of frozen poultry products, 25 bales and 29 sacks of second-hand clothing, 12 sacks of Ankara wrappers, 11 sacks of Indian Hemp, 583 pieces of used tyres and 1,181 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) of 25 litres each, among others.”

    He said the achievement was made possible by “the strategic enforcement measures put in place in line with the Federal Government policy targeted at boosting agricultural development in the country.”

  • Ogun customs intercepts drone, N2.6b contraband

    Operatives of Ogun State Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service have intercepted a smuggled drone and contraband worth N2.6 billion in the last six months.

    Speaking during a media briefing at the Idiroko Customs Area Command, Ipokia Local Government, Controller of the Command, Michael Agbara urged smugglers of contraband to desist from the illicit business or risk the wrath of law.

    ‘’It will interest you to know that within the period of 4th of June to 3rd July, 2018, we have generated a total revenue of N393,520, 285.71. While in the area of anti-smuggling, the command made seizures of 37 vehicles (21 secondhand and 16 means of conveyance), 300 bags of foreign (50kg), 244 kegs of vegetable oil(25 liters),208 pairs of used footwears,8 bales and 25 sacks of secondhand clothing, 152 cartons of frozen poultry products, 115 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit( petrol) of 25 litres each, 20 pieces of used handbags,4,220 cartons of tomato paste and one drone camera with a total Duty Paid Value of N236,196,835.

    ‘’Also, within the last six months, a total revenue of N2,645, 741,068.9 was generated and total of N276 seizures were made with the highest of 72 seizures recorded in the month of June,2018. The DPV stood at N1, 412,785,405.0. Items seized within the last six months include: 215 units of vehicles; 15, 976 bags of foreign rice(50 kg each), 1,148 of vegetable oil(25 litres each), 24 units of motorcycle; 161 compressed book packs, 85 coconut packs and 8 packs of cannabis sativa(Indian hemp), among other items.

    The customs boss said the drone was packaged in a parcel and abandoned by its owner at a customs checkpoint.

    He added that the seizures were made possible by the hard work of his men and support of NCS management through its anti-smuggling campaign.

    ‘’The success story was made possible by the hard work of officers and men of the command and the support of NCS management. We shall however not rest on our oars but strive to take the anti-smuggling crusade to greater heights.’’

    The Ogun State Customs Area Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its anti-smuggling campaign with the recent seizure of 13,328 bags of rice, 380 motorcycles and 7,743 cartons of frozen poultry products from smugglers.

    Other items seized are: 206 vehicles, 401 kegs of vegetable oil, 71 bags of cannabis, 240 kegs of petrol and 996 used tyres, among others.

    Speaking with reporters at the Idiroko Area Customs Command, the Area Controller of the command, Mr Multafu Wandu, disclosed that the command also generated N4.08 billion as against N3.04 billion collected in the same period in 2015.

    He said: ”The last six months (Jan-June 2016) recorded significant increase in revenue generation drive and anti-smuggling activities. For the period under review, the command collected N4, 085, 926, 801.65 as against N3, 401, 647, 417.28 collected in the same period in 2015, which is a progressive difference of N684, 279,384.37.

    ”In the period under review, the command recorded 411 seizures with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N484,143,527.00 as against 515 seizures with DPV of N445,399,838.00 that the command recorded in 2015.

    Ogun customs seizes hundreds of smuggled cars in raid of syndicate

    A cross-border  car smuggling syndicate has forfeited hundreds of exotic cars to the Ogun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service for allegedly bringing them in illegally from neighbouring Benin Republic.

    The vehicles were seized during  a massive raid at the border town of  Idiroko,Ogun State.

    Also impounded during the raid were  cartons of frozen turkey and dozens of motorcycles  used by rice smugglers.

    Spokesman for the command, Abubakar Usman said the operation was made possible by ” the   vigilance of our men who took  proactive measures to contain the errant smugglers.”

    Usman said the smugglers resorted to firing at the Customs men   once they were intercepted but could not match the superior firepower of the law enforcement officers .

    “Many of the vehicles you are seeing here were intercepted from the notorious syndicate who resisted our men. They were  overpowered  and had to flee abandoning the vehicles,” he said.

    ”We  also seized many motorcycles from rice smugglers, and  cartons of turkey from illicit traders who tried to bring them from the Benin Republic into our territory through the bush .”

    The command said  it generated N3,401,647,417.34 as revenue in the first half of this year  as against   the N2,543,266,323.43 it realized within the corresponding  period in 2014.

    “Our command was able to record 515 seizures with Duty Paid Value(DPV) of N445,399,838.00; as against 733 seizures with DPV of N880,002,012.00 same period in 2014.The difference is 218 seizures with DPV of N434,602,174.00,”  he said.

    He added:“the formidable mechanism put in place by the Customs Area Controller, Mr. Haruna Mahmud, to curtail the menace of smuggling activities in the area led to the successes recorded so far.”
