  • Three men docked over alleged cultism in Ogun

    Three men, Femi Hassan, 39, Gabriel Benson, 25, and Wasiu Ogunjobi, 19, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly belonging to a secret cult, `Eiye Confraternity’.

    The accused, of no fixed address, were facing a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms and belonging to a secret cult.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused persons and others still at large conspired to belong to an unlawful society called Eiye Confraternity.

    According to Mustapha, the accused men committed the offences on Feb. 27 at about 11.00 p.m. at Gasline area, Ijoko, Ota.

    He said that the accused persons conspired to create fears into the minds of residents by threatening people with cutlass, axes and knife.

    Mustapha said the offences contravened Section 3 and 5 of the Secret Cult (Prohibition and Special Provision) Act Laws of Ogun State, 1999.

    The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Matthew Akinyemi, granted them bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Akinyemi said that one of the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must be gainfully employed.

    He also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government and their addresses should be verified by the Police.

    The case was adjourned until April 4, for definite hearing.

    Four Justrite staff docked for alleged theft of Heineken beer

    Four men, Olumide Ogunwamide (30), Temitope Oluwaniyi (29), Vincent Azime (32), and Fatai Unman (30), were on Wednesday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly stealing valuables worth N125,000 belonging to their employer.

    The accused, whose addresses were not disclosed, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 27, 2017 at about 2.00 p. m. at Justrite Shopping Complex, Ota.

    He said that the accused, who are staff of Justrite Ltd, conspired among themselves to steal Heineken beer and other items valued at N125,000 belonging to their employer.

    Gbesi said the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol.1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

    Banwo said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit of means.

    He also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government and submit four recent passport photographs to the court.

    The case was adjourned until February 21, for hearing.

    Kidnapping: Ogun, NSCDC to beef up security in schools

    The Ogun State government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said on Friday they would collaborate to provide adequate security for teachers and students in the state.

    The state government and NSCDC said the measures would ensure the safety of lives and properties in schools giving the increasing security challenges across the country.

    The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, and the Commandant – General of the NSCDC, Abdullahi Mohammadu, stated this  in Abeokuta, the state capital, during  the grand finale of a workshop on “School security management and roles of stakeholders” organised by the College of Security Management of the NSCDC.

    Mujota,  was represented by the Director of Education Support Services, Mrs. Oyenike Agaje,  said government would provide adequate security in all public primary and secondary schools across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Councils Development Areas (LCDA) in the state.

    The commissioner said the workshop sensitized relevant stakeholders in the education industry on measures that would be used to increase their security consciousness.

     

     

  • 400 people to enjoy free medical surgery in Ogun

    No fewer than 400 people will benefit from the ongoing free medical surgery of the Ogun Government.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, made the disclosure on Wednesday while flagging off the programme at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the free medical surgery would cover hernia, glaucoma, breast biopsy, burn excision/debridement and other diseases.

    NAN reports that the programme was jointly organised by Ogun Government in conjunction with the Rotary International District 9110, Nigeria, Rotary International 3020, India and Rotary International 3610, South Korea.

    Ipaye said that the free medical surgery was to give succour to those who could not afford the cost of seeking medical attention in Nigeria and abroad.

    He said, “Such surgery usually costs so much and most of our people, especially those living in rural areas and the aged, cannot afford it.’’

    The commissioner urged the Federal Government to fix the health sector in order to reduce the rate of people travelling abroad for medical tourism.

    “We are attending to about 400 beneficiaries free of charge and you know how much it will cost in dollars or pounds if these people are to travel to U.S. or UK for such treatment.

    “This is the reason we are calling on the state government to pay attention to the health sector to reduce the money being spent on medical treatment abroad,’’ Ipaye said.

    In his speech, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Jagdeep Kapoor, said that the free surgical mission would be carried out by seven medical doctors from India.

    He said that Ogun was chosen by the Rotary International of Nigeria to benefit from the exercise.

    Oba Adewale Osinderu, the Elepe of Epe, thanked the state government for the giant strides recorded in the health sector and for bringing the programme to the door steps of the less-privileged.

    Osinderu, who is also the President, Remo Traditional Council, said: “Do you not know how much it costs to travel abroad for medical checkup, talk less of going for medical surgery?

    “At least, 400 people will benefit from the surgical mission.

    “We thank the state government and the Rotary International for deeming it fit to come up with this programme,’’ the traditional ruler said.

     

  • Man docked for tricycle theft

    A 20-year-old man, Friday Ogbu, who allegedly stole a tricycle valued at N520,000 was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Ogbu, with an unknown address is facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused and others still at large, committed the offences on May 2, at 6a.m. at Anisere-Ipamesun, Ota, Ogun.

    Gbesi said that the accused and his accomplices conspired to steal a tricycle with registration number MEK 058 TVS valued at N520, 000 belonging to one Mohammed Sanni.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N150, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

    Banwo also ordered that the sureties should swear to an affidavit of means and submit four recent passport photographs to the court with an evidence of tax payment from Ogun Government.

    He adjourned the case till June 21, for hearing.

  • Ogun shuts hospital over patient’s death

    Ogun State government on Thursday shut down a private hospital – Glorious Ona Ara Clinic and Maternity Home, Abeokuta, following alleged unethical practice leading to the death of a patient, Kehinde Sikiru.

    Kehinde, 24, reportedly died due to “illegal” surgery carried out on him.

    In a statement issued by the Ministry of Health Information Officer, Taiyese Ebunlomo, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, said the closure was carried out by the ministry’s monitoring team at Itori Odo in Abeokuta South local government area of the state.

    “We have received so many calls, petitions and complaints from good people of the state on that particular hospital, performing illegal operations against the licence approved for the facility.

    “And there has been a standing order that patience with complications or complicated issues be immediately referred to the nearest general hospital for better treatment,” he said.

    The commissioner stated that Kehinde died as a result of the illegal operation carried out on him, adding that it was against the ethics of medical profession for Maternity Home, Mission Home and Traditional Birth Attendants to inject or preform operation on their patients as they are not licensed to do so.

    At least 168 private health facilities have been sealed off in the state since the revalidation and registration exercise commenced in January 2016.

    Man docked for theft in Ogun

    A 29-year-old man, Dotun Akande, who allegedly stole N935, 000 of his employer, was on Tuesday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Akande, who lives at No. 28 Ayantunde St., Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometimes in May to August, 2016, at Orisun Microfinance Bank, Sango-Ota.

    He said the accused, who was the staff of the Microfinance Bank, collected N935, 000 from customers and refused to remit the money to his employer.

    “The accused converted the money to his personal use instead of committing it to his employer and all efforts to recover the money from him proved abortive.” he said.

    Gbesi said that the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N800, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Banwo said that sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

    He also ordered that the sureties should swear to an affidavit of means and submit four recent passport photographs to the court with an evidence of tax payment from Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned till May 4 for hearing.

     

     

  • Man arraigned for stabbing

    A man, Ramoni Kareem, who allegedly stabbed a man on the head with a broken bottle, is facing trial at an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    The 38-year-old, who lives at No. 42, Debola St., Iyana-Ilogbo, Ota, has pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused and others still at large committed the offences on March 30 at about 2.00 p.m. at Ijako in Ota.

    He said the accused and his accomplices assaulted a man, Emmanuel Ojo, by stabbing him with a broken bottle on the head.The offences contravened Sections 355 and 416 of the Criminal Code,  Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    In his ruling, the Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N75,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Banwo said the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned until May 3 for hearing.

  • Man, docked over alleged motorcycle theft

    A 45-year-old man, Olutan Adekunle, who allegedly stole a motorcycle valued at N230,000, was on Wednesday charged before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

    Adekunle, who lives at No. 26 Owolabi St., Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, is facing a two-count charge bordering on stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan.5 at about 12.45.p.m.at No. 5, Holy Ghost Avenue, Iloye, Ota.

    Gbesi said the accused collected the motorcycle on credit from one Babatunde Oluwaseun, and promised that he would pay him N7, 000 weekly, an agreement he did not fulfill.

    “All efforts made by the complainant to get his money or the motorcycle proved abortive,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 383(1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr S. O. Banwo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

    Banwo said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned till March 16 for hearing. (NAN)

  • Ogun Govt. to introduce marathon race – Amosun

     

    Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun says his government will soon introduce marathon race to encourage sporting activities in the state.

    Amosun made the disclosure on Thursday at the closing ceremony of the two-day Youth Convention in Abeokuta.

    According to him, the World Bank has indicated its interest to support the race.

    He explained that the introduction of the race was part of his government’s effort to develop sporting activities in the state.

    Amosun, who recounted his playing days in the Ogun State Polytechnic as a football player and a long distance athlete, said the bank’s support would make the endeavour a success.

    Already, he revealed that government had started discussions with experts and professional bodies on ways to develop the game of tennis in the state.

    The governor attributed the delay in the implementation of some sports programmes to paucity of funds, adding that government would intensify its efforts to do more in the sector.

    Speakers at the convention who included ex-Green Eagles Skipper, Chief Segun Odegbami and Olympian, Mrs Falilat Ogunkoya-Omotayo, commended the government for its efforts in improving sports in the state.

    The duo advocated the need for the government to organise a mini-festival for the development of sports in the state.

    A sport administrator, Mr Tunji Onatolu, stressed the need to change parents’ orientation toward sports.

    He said that sporting activities were not for drop outs and miscreants as against some people’s perception.
