    Ogun LG polls, peaceful, orderly

The ongoing local government polls in Ogun State got off to a good start on Saturday.

Election into chairmanship and councillorship positions are ongoing in the 20 local government councils with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) saying that they will have a good showing.

In the polling units surveyed in major cities such as Abeokuta, the state capital; Ijebu Ode, Sagamu, Ota and Ilaro, election materials arrived on schedule as voters expressed confidence that the exercise would be concluded without any hassles.

Findings by reporters across the state have not shown any incident of voter harassment or ballot box snatching so far.

This contradicts the false alarm raised by a major opposition party in the state to the effect that the election has been bedevilled by violence.

Some voters, however, complained of the late arrival of materials even as officials of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) interviewed across the state said materials have reached all polling units and they expected voters to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise.

Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Ogun Command, has warned any individual or group planning to disrupt the Nov. 16 local government elections in the state to desist forthwith.

NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mrs Remilekun Ekundayo, gave the warning in an interview with the  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Saturday, as the council elections kicked off across the state.

NAN reports that the State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) had fixed Nov. 16 for the conduct of the elections in all the 20 local government areas, comprising 236 wards in the state.

Ekundayo warned miscreants, who had allegedly planned to disrupt the peaceful conduct of elections or hijack ballot boxes, to have a rethink.

“Anyone or group planning any mayhem will be made to face the wrath of the law,” the commandant said.

She said that NSCDC had put in place security strategies to ensure law and order during the exercise.

“About 3,150 personnel have already been deployed in all the 20  LGAs and 236 political wards to ensure the security and success of the elections.

“I also plead with the electorate to cooperate with the process and avoid interference or taking laws into their own hands.

“All plans that are inimical and capable of inciting violence must be guarded against,” she said.
