  • Eight die in Ogun road accident

    Eight persons died yesterday while two others, comprising an expectant mother and a toddler, were injured in Ogun State.

    The accident occurred opposite the police post on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway at Ewekoro.

    It involved a Toyota Corolla sport car with registration number (Lagos) AKD 649 FP, which rammed into a parked truck by the roadside.

    The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) Babatunde Akinbiyi attributed the accident to “speeding and loss of control”.

    Akinbiyi said 10 persons, comprising four males, four females and two kids, were in the car when the accident occurred.

    He said eight of them died, while the remaining two were injured.

    The TRACE spokesman added that the remains of the dead were kept at the morgue of the State General Hospital in Ifo.

    Akinbiyi said: “The driver, who is suspected to be drunk and speeding, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a stationery trailer parked on the roadside. He killed eight persons inside the vehicle.

    “Though the driver of the parked trailer was not in the truck when the accident happened, he reported himself and has been arrested by operatives of Ewekoro divisional police peadquarters.

    “The expectant mother among the survivors has been referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) at Idi-Aba in Abeokuta, the state capital, for treatment.

    “While TRACE corps commiserates with the family of the dead, drivers are once again admonished to avoid speeding, overloading and drunk-driving. In the same vein, indiscriminate parking of vehicles on the traffic corridor with reckless abandonment will no longer be tolerated.”

  • 12 persons die in Ogun road accident

    Twelve persons, including two drivers and a child, died yesterday in a road accident on Abeokuta-Kobape-Sagamu road.

    The accident reportedly occurred when a speeding Kia Cerato car veered off its lane, crossed the median and rammed into a commercial bus on the opposite direction.

    All occupants of both vehicles were said to have died on the scene.

    The accident occurred around 1 p.m at the Siun stretch of the road.

    The remains of the 12 victims were reportedly deposited at the morgue of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu.

    The Kia Cerato car, which was said to be speeding, had a burst tyre.

    In panic, the driver was said to have applied the break and lost control of the wheel.

    This led to the collision with the Toyota bus travelling in the opposite direction.

    The state’s Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mrs Florence Okpe, announced this yesterday.

    In a statement on behalf of the Sector Commander of the FRSC, Clement Oladele, the education officer urged the people whose family members travelled within the period of the accident to contact the FRSC Command in Abeokuta, the state capital, or the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for identification of the victims.

    The statement reads: “A black KIA Cerato car on high speed suffered a tyre burst and the driver was suspected to have applied break suddenly, which led to him losing control of the speeding car that left its lane, climbing the road divider and racing to the opposite direction where the car collided with a passenger bus, a grey Toyota sports space bus.

    “The bus was traveling from Abeokuta towards Sagamu. The unfortunate crash killed all the occupants of the two ill-fated vehicles. The suspected cause of the crash is tyre burst and speeding.

    “The details of the two vehicles are: LSR 334 FF for the Toyota sports space van (ash) and the second vehicle is marked (Lagos) KJA 806 BT, KIA Cerato, black colour.

    “The people involved are 12 male adults, six female adults and a child). The dead victims were taken to OOUTH mortuary in Sagamu.

    “The wreckage of the crashed vehicles have been cleared off the road and traffic restored.”

    Five persons died yesterday in a road accident when two cars collided at Orire-Imo, Ibafo stretch of the Abeokuta-Kobape-Sagamu Road in Ogun State.

    The accident, which occurred around 7.25 a.m, involved a Honda car with registration number (Lagos) EKY 365 FB and a Subaru car with registration number (Lagos) KTU 246 AT.

    Two other persons were injured.

    Spokesman of Ogun State Traffic and Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, attributed it to “speeding and loss of control, which resulted to head on collision”.

    Akinbiyi added that the victims were conveyed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.

    He said: “A Honda with registration number (Lagos) EKY 365 FB coming from Abeokuta lost control, veered into the other lane and collided with a Subaru car, marked (Lagos) KTU 246 AT, coming towards Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

    “Three persons were initially injured. Four men who died instantly and their bodies were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH).

    “However, a post-crash report indicates that one of the injured also died, pushing the casualty figure to five and two injured.”

    Four persons were confirmed dead and 13 injured in an accident at Kilometre 82 of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

    The accident, which occurred on Saturday evening, involved an Innoson brand of bus, registered as AKL 450 YY, and a Toyota Sienna, registered as FST 370 DC.

    According to the Route Commander and Public Education Officer of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, the accident might have been caused by over speeding.

    Two men and two women died in the accident.

    In a statement on behalf of the Sector Commander, Clement Oladele, the route commander said the injured were taken to Broad Life Hospital at Olowotedo and Idera Hospital in Sagamu.

    The remains of the dead were deposited at Fakoya Mortuary in Sagamu.

    Okpe said: “Speeding was suspected as the cause of the crash. The injured were taken to Broad Life Hospital at Olowotedo and Idera Hospital in Sagamu, while the bodies of those killed were deposited at Fakoya Mortuary in Sagamu.

    “Besides, police MTD from Mowe Police Station was informed about the accident.

    “Motorists are enjoined to drive cautiously, obey traffic regulations and follow instructions from FRSC patrol teams and other traffic agencies.”
