  • Two Civil Defence officers assaulted over court verdict involving Ogun Speaker

Two operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were allegedly assaulted yesterday at the premises of a Customary Court in Abeokuta by security aides attached to Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker Suraj Adekunbi and men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

A witness told The Nation that the Speaker’s security aides and SARS operatives, who arrived at the court premises in Hilux van marked Adigbe Divisional Police Headquarters, allegedly harassed the NSCDC officers over a court judgment.

The judgment was in a case involving Adekunbi and his ex-girlfriend, Iyabo – an NSCDC official.

She filed the suit at the customary court, alleging threat to her life by Adekunbi.

The Nation gathered that after the verdict was delivered, Iyabo was unwilling to allow the terms of judgement to be carried out in favour of the speaker.

She alleged that the court officials were compromised by him.

In the ensuing confusion and struggle, Iyabo and her male colleague, who accompanied her to the court, were allegedly rough-handled by the Speaker’s security aides and the SARS operatives, who shot sporadically into the air to scare away curious spectators at the scene.

During the court proceeding, Iyabo had alleged that she would have gotten married to another man but the Speaker prevented her from accomplishing that dream in addition to his failure to take responsibility for upkeep of the only fruit of their relationship – eight-year-old Samiat Adekunbi.

The lady prayed the court to restrain Adekunbi from further threatening her life and allow her to marry  another man of her choice.

At the first and second hearing of the divorce suit on June 21 and July 19, Adekunbi was absent in court.

But at the third hearing on August 2, he denied threatening his ex-lover’s life, stressing that all he wanted was the custody of his daughter.

At the resumed hearing of the suit yesterday, the three-man panel gave their judgement and unanimously ordered the return of the child to the custody of Adekunbi.

The court nullified their 10 year-old relationship, ordering that all parties are at liberty to marry any person of their choice.

Reacting, Iyabo told The Nation that the matter was a miscarriage of justice, saying it confirmed the Speaker’s repeated boast that he would have his way easily in the case.

“He only used his power and connection to bully me and have his way. I have reported this matter to the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, the Department of Security Services (DSS), Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Justice, Development and Peace Commission, the Police at Adatan Divisional Headquarters, but all proved to no avail,” Iyabo said.

Also reacting, Adekunbi, through his media aide, Waheed Akinola, said: “The court granted the relief of Iyabo to dissolve the marriage and transfer the custody of the child to Mr. Speaker in line with the law.

“It was the second ruling that the plaintiff quarrelled with, throwing caution to the wind in the process. She personally insulted and even manhandled the Speaker right inside the court to the chagrin of everyone.

“To worsen the situation, she brought an NSCDC official, who we later learnt, was never posted there nor got an official approval to cover the proceedings. As if that was not enough, the officer flouted the court order on the submission of handsets and secretly recorded the proceedings without the permission of the court until he was caught.

“It was on that strength that the court ordered his arrest by security operatives. He of course resisted arrested and that led to the avoidable, but highly preventable show of shame that ensued today.”
