Ogun Water Corporation migrates flat rate, post-paid customers to prepaid meters

Ogun State Water Corporation has unfolded plans to implement a mandatory transition from flat rate and post-paid billing to prepaid water meters.

The move is to enhance service delivery, transparency and revenue collection.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Water Resources, Damilola Otubanjo, said in a statement that the initiative aimed to address non-revenue water losses caused by unpaid bills and discrepancies in billing for customers, who were either not receiving adequate supply or were charged a flat rate.

She said the introduction of prepaid meters would ensure consumers paid only for the water they used, promoting fairness, accountability and efficiency in water distribution.

On the outstanding debts owed the corporation across branches, Otubanjo says for Abeokuta alone, the corporation is owed over N632.9 million by flat rate and post-paid customers across its service areas.

    The breakdown is as follows: Adatan 1-4 (N86,816,145.41), Elega 1 & 2 (N171,763,691.65), Ibara (N97,988,978), Ijeun Titun (N168,530,757.26) and Ita Oshin (N106,805,066.55).

The corporation gave customers a two-week deadline for those under the flat rate and post-paid categories to migrate to prepaid water meters and settle outstanding bills.

It warned that failure to comply would result in service disconnection from the corporation’s water mains.
