“I went through the card reader with my PVC and my photograph appeared then we had a bit of problem sorting out my thumb print and then when they were about to sort it out, they made me go through the process of voting, they gave the ballot paper for the Presidential, Senatorial and the House of Representatives.

“It was very orderly even though there are many people waiting, waiting either to cast their votes or waiting to welcome me because now I vote in my own compound where I was born.”

He added: “In any competition there will always the winners and losers. What anybody in any competition must be prepared for as a good sportsman is to have the mind that says if I win, I show magnanimity, if I lose, I will also bow out graciously.

“That is what any competition is all about. You can’t say if you are going into any competition, you must win at all cost then it is no longer a competition.”

  • Ogun APC chief: no ballot papers found in my house

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Otunba Babatunde Onakoya, has said no thumb-printed ballot papers were found in his house in Ijebu-Ode.

Onakoya said neither him nor his son, who is the Chairman of Leguru Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ololade Onakoya, was being investigated by security agencies in connection with this year’s general elections or any other matter.

The board member of Benin/Owena River Basin Authority addressed reporters yesterday in Ijebu-Ode while reacting to “fake news” that he and his son were involved in thumb-printed ballot papers.

The APC chieftain said the Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government Area, Wale Shittu, was also not being investigated for any criminal activity.

He described the allegation as baseless, fake and unfounded.

Onakoya said the rumour was being carried by those he said were threatened by his support for President Muhammadu Buhari.

The APC stalwart also dismissed the allegation as “tissues of lies and a good example of fake news concocted by enemies of democracy”.

He said: “I have never engaged in any acts of brigandage in the name of politics and will never do.

“I strongly suspect that this is the handiwork of those who are feeling threatened by our total commitment to ensure that President Buhari coasts home to victory on Saturday.

“We are pushing for this within the ambit of the law and we shall not be intimidated by anybody or a group of people that wants to return us to era of wastes and stinking corruption.”

Onakoya said his attention was drawn to the rumour yesterday, adding that he discovered that some people attempted to destruction of his hard-earned reputation and dignity of his family because of his unrepentant commitment to actualising President Buhari’s second term ambition in tomorrow’s poll.

  • Amosun working against Buhari – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has accused Governor Ibikunle Amosun of discreetly working to undermine President Muhammadu Buhari in the Presidential and National Assembly elections rescheduled for Saturday.

In a statement on Thursday in Abeokuta by Publicity Secretary of Ogun State APC Caretaker Committee, Tunde Oladunjoye, the party alleged Amosun was to reduce the margin of the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in Ogun East and Ogun West Senatorial Districts in a vainglorious attempt to send a wrong signal of his popularity in Ogun State and undermine the Vice President.

The statement reads: “We have at our disposal, confirmed intelligence reports that Governor Amosun has been holding nocturnal and clandestine meetings in the last three weeks with a failed governorship Aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) whose father is a renowned betting agent.

“The purpose of the meetings is to work against APC at the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“The objective, for which the governor distributed the sum of N200, 000 per polling booth last week, before the postponed elections, was to ensure that President Buhari loses the election or to drastically reduce the margin of his victory in the two Senatorial districts, especially in Ogun East, where the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, hails from.

“It would be recalled that the failed governorship aspirant recently, without any justification whatsoever, took to the mass media to disparage the Vice President, blaming him for his woes arising from the loss of the PDP’s governorship ticket, only for the same aspirant to turn around few days after to contradict himself with a boast that INEC would soon name him as his party’s candidate”.

The party added: “Governor Amosun is insisting on the posting away of some corps members in Ogun West Senatorial District where he is sponsoring an APM candidate against his former Chief of Staff, Chief Olu Odebiyi, who is of the APC.

“The party is using this medium to ask the Presidency to tame Governor Amosun before he sets Ogun State on fire over his egoistic and moribund self-preserving ambition.”

  • Ijebu monarchs: Kashamu is our beloved son

Traditional rulers in Ijebu land have described the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Senator Buruji Kashamu, as a beloved son of Ijebu land.

They hailed the senator for his foresight to put key policies and programmes in an undertaking, which he has been giving to traditional rulers across the state.

In the undertaking, which he elaborated on, Kashamu promised to allow local governments to enjoy full financial autonomy without deducting from their monthly allocations.

This, he said, would engender grassroots developments.

The senator also committed himself to addressing the issues of cooperative deductions and contributory pensions without a view to allowing the will of the workers to prevail.

The PDP candidate also said Micro Small Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMSEs) would be encouraged to thrive through the facilitation of microfinance and community banks that would advance revolving facilities to entrepreneurs at zero interest rate.

  • Winners emerge at Maths contest

Ten-year-old Madumere Rejoice Ngozi, has emerged winner in the 2019 The Ultimate Mathematics Ambassador (TUMA) competition, Ota, Ogun State.

Ngozi, a pupil of Giant Stride Nursery and Primary School, Ifo, competed with over 1,200 others from 408 schools in Ogun State and other neighbouring states.

With a staggering 93 per cent, Ngozi beat nine-year-old Enwere Kingsley Ikenna of Cuddly Kids School and 10-year-old Oyindamola Olawale Hann of Vickstell International School, Ikorodu who both emerged first and second runners up respectively.

Ngozi was presented with a N500, 000 cash and a plaque. Her teacher Mr Moses Issa, went home with N150, 000 and a plaque, while her school was given a laptop, printer, textbooks and a plaque.  Kingsley received N300, 000 and a plaque. His teacher Kehinde Mukadaz was also presented with N100, 000 and a plaque; while the school was given a laptop, textbooks and a plaque. Third place Olawale was handed N200, 000 and a plaque, her teacher Mr Edeh Anayo Samuel got N75, 000 and a plaque while her school got a printer, textbooks and a plaque.

Others who emerged fourth to 10th positions were presented with N50, 000 cash prize and N25,000.00 for their teachers.  Contestants between 11th to 15th positions went home with prizes.

The Ambassadors Schools, organiser of the event, said TUMA was birthed to address children’s phobia for mathematics.

Speaking during the event, chairman Ambassadors Schools, Ota Samson Yomi Osewa, said this  of the competition: “We know that many children today have phobia for mathematics. This school has excelled in mathematics competitions especially national competition.  We are therefore grateful that these organisers have sown into our lives. We then decided that for our sociaresponsibility, we should run mathematics competition in primary school to prepare pupils ahead of their secondary education. This, we believe,  will remove the phobia of mathematics.

Osewa recalled that at TUMA’s maiden edition, the highest marks scored was 63. Nonetheless, he is happy that it skyrocketed to 93 per cent this year, with more schools participating.

Osewa said the school, as the organiser, has been magnanimous enough by ensuring 50 of the participants are encouraged via gift presentation.

“We give prizes to as many as the top 50 that participated in the competition to encourage them. Anybody who does not get a prize will not want to come again; that is why we decided that let everyone get something modest for their effort including their teachers. It will also encourage pupils to study harder in mathematics.”

Earlier guest speaker and a professor of Chemistry, Odebunmi Ezekiel, described Mathematics as the bedrock of national development.

He lamented that students performance in mathematics in Nigeria in recent times have hit an all-time low.

He said: “The major reason why performance in mathematics has gone down is phobia. This can be caused by learning environment, which doesn’t encourage the teaching and learning of mathematics. The teacher factor is another reason. Some of the mathematics teachers are themselves not students of mathematics; they are just doing it without loving the subject. Some of them who know it don’t know how to teach it in a way that students will understand.

‘’The last one is the fact that many of the textbooks we have in the market are not reader-friendly at all because of the way they present the concept and the type of questions they ask the students.”

  • Don’t vote against Amosun, Osoba begs

Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba has asked members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to put behind attacks on the party’s campaign rally in the state and ensure victory for all candidates of the party, including Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Suspected political thugs believed to have been hired by a party attacked the APC campaign rally in Abeokuta, pelting some dignitaries including President Muhammadu Buhari with stones.

Amosun, who is APC candidate for Ogun Central, backs the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Adekunle Akinlade to succeed him against APC’s Dapo Abiodun.

Osoba, who lamented no arrest has been made over the incident till date, said he has told supporters in the state to leave vengeance to God and vote for all APC candidates.

He said: “Yesterday, I told stakeholders in Ogun state that on no account should anybody vote against Amosun as a person.

“A governor is a governor and he will be in office till May 29. So, why are we worrying ourselves?

‘Amosun is just an individual. I still respect him as my governor up to May 29 this year and will not do anything to undermine him as governor.

“I was governor twice. I told our people that vengeance is not ours and that nobody should go for vengeance.

“Amosun is just a person but the office of the governor deserves respect and I give respect to that office.”

He added: “Ogun state is first in several areas. The leaders of the progressives in this country are from that state and it is the home state of the Vice President.

“I told the President that I apologised to him and that uptill today, nobody has been arrested. I see that as a failure on the part of some elements of the security agencies.

“Actually, the bulk of APC in Ogun state, we are one family and instruction has gone out that despite what has happened, we should vote for APC candidates at all levels and when the result is out, it should reflect that.

“At least we should respect the Vice President, who is busy preaching welfarism for the downtrodden and I am sure that appropriate action will be taken on that issue later.
