An average of 1.2 million children are immunized every six month in Ogun State, as part of efforts to ensure effective health care delivery to the citizenry, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye has disclosed.

Making the disclosure at a community health outreach, organized by The Collective Club in Sagamu, Dr. Ipaye said the immunization included the use of vitamin A supplementation, to prevent complications of conditions, thereby reducing unnecessary spending by parents.

The Commissioner, through his Media Aide, Miss. Omolola Awolana, said the State has been able to put cholera at bay through investment in primary healthcare, adding that massive health education and nutritional supplementation were some of the preventive interventions put in place, to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

According to him, ‘’What we have done more deliberately is to focus on  primary interventions which are largely of two strategies, the first is massive health education on what we call primary prevention and the second is to give preventive intervention which includes immunization, that is what we have done. We immunize an average of 1.2 million children every six month, so how will you have outbreak of diseases, when you have practically immunized all your children?’’

  • ‘Evans shot me, pretended to be a doctor’

A prosecution witness, Chief James Uduji, on Friday told a Lagos High Court in Igbosere that suspected ‘billionaire’ kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a Evans, shot him during his kidnap and afterwards pretended to be a doctor.

Uduji told Justice Adedayo Akintoye that Evans was the driver of the Lexus 470 SUV which he and three other members of his gang used during the operation.

The witness testified at the commencement of the prosecution’s case against Evans and his co-defendants; Joseph Emeka, Linus Okpara and Victor Aduba.

The four were arraigned on June 26 following the dismissal of Evans’ objection to a five-count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping and attempted murder, preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

The defendants and others at large allegedly committed the offences on September 7, 2015, at Seventh Avenue, Festac Town, Lagos.

The allegedly conspired and kidnapped Uduji, obtained a ransom of $1.2 million dollars and shot him on the shoulder while trying to kill him.

    They pleaded not guilty.

Evans is also facing another charge of conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping and attempted murder, before the same judge.

In this charge, he is standing trial alongside Joseph Emeka, Ugochukwu Nwachukwu and Victor Aduba.

Led in Examination-in-Chief by prosecution counsel Adebayo Haroun, Uduji narrated yesterday how he was kidnapped on September 7, 2015, by four armed men on his way home from his factory at Agbara in Ogun State.

He said the incident took place very close to his house at 7th Avenue area of Festac Town, Lagos.
Uduji said the alleged kidnappers drove a Lexus 470 SUV and fired several gun shots during the kidnap operation.

The witness said he was surprised to see the men shooting towards his vehicle, adding that he thought they were the police.

Uduji said: “I was inside my Hilux van with my two drivers when the men came and pulled me out of my vehicle and dragged me inside their own vehicle.

“I was not blindfolded at this point, so I saw the men clearly and the man at the steering wheel with a gun was Evans; he is the only one I can recognise among the four,” Uduji said.

The witness testified that it was when he was dragged out of his vehicle, that he noticed that he was stained with blood.

“I then realised I had sustained a bullet wounds,” he explained.

Uduji said the kidnappers called a doctor on phone who treated his bullet wound at their destination.

The witness said he was given two tetanus injections for seven days, adding that Evans was the so called doctor who treated him.

He said that he stayed for 45 days in captivity and a ransom of 1.2 million dollars was paid before he was released by the alleged kidnappers.

Uduji told the court that the ransom was paid in three instalments by his brothers, adding that he was released eight days after the ransom was paid.

The witness was cross-examined by all the defendants’ counsel, Mr Olarewaju Ajanaku who represented Evans, Mr Ogedi Ogu who represented the second defenant and Mr Emmanuel Ochai for the fourth defendant.

Ajanaku observed that the specific date when Uduji was released from the kidnappers was not mentioned in the statement he made at the police station.

He also stated that the date which the witness told the court that he made the statement at the police station was different from the date contained in the statement.

According to the charge, the defendants also allegedly fired shots at Mr Donatus Nwoye which hit him on the hand.
The court heard that they also shot Jereome Okezie, Uduji’s driver, on the hand and head.

At the conclusion of Uduji’s testimony, the prosecution called Jerome Okezie, as its second witness.
Okezie testified that he sustained bullet wounds from the kidnappers’ gun shots, adding that he pretended to be dead after he was shot.

He said he was taken to the hospital by some people after the kidnappers took his boss away.

The offences, according to the prosecution, contravened Sections 230 (a) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Justice Akintoye adjourned further proceedings till September 17.

  • Abandoned projects worsening people’s suffering in Ogun – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State has expressed worry over abandoned infrastructural projects that littered   the state by Governor Ibikunle Amosun – led administration.

ADC said abandoned projects such as roads and bridges in parts of the state are not only a manifestation of lack of direction on the side of the government that initiated them, but also worsening the suffering of residents’ movement in and out of Ogun State.

In a statement on Wednesday  by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Abiola Odutola, ADC  identified places such as  Akute, Magboro,  Agbado Junction bridge, Ijoko, Sango, Lambe  among other areas where alleged abandoned and uncompleted road projects by Amosun’s government have remained daily nightmares for residents.

Odutola called on residents and indigenes to rise and save Ogun State from further socio-economic damage, explaining that abandoned projects was a clear signal that there “is a problem with policy direction.”

According to him, events in the last seven years are pointers to the fact that the state needs to be rescued from the era of wasting resources on the construction of several bridges that would not add any economic value to the state and the people.

“ADC remains resolute in its defence of the common people of Ogun State. We have perfected plans to ensure that we finish whatever we start and stand by the commitment of ADC to the War against Poverty.

“Residents are the ones bearing the brunt of the state of the projects as the cost incurred on car maintenance and transport fares in the areas have gone up by over 200 per cent in the past years. When it rains, some residents have to rely on some men, who carry them on their backs like babies.

“It is appalling that after more than six years, this administration has not completed projects it promised to finish in two years. Initially, it blamed the delay on the economic recession it claimed was caused by the Peoples’ Democratic Party but one should ask the governor how come the recession didn’t affect the commencement and completion of the bridges he constructed across Abeokuta within the same time,”   Odutola stated

But Governor Ibikunle Amosun has continued to assure indigenes and residents that his administration would complete the ongoing infrastructural projects in the state and even keep working till the handover date, to build more infrastructures in order to attract additional investors.

  • Buhari prevailed on me not to leave APC – Sen. Tejuoso

Senator Lanre Tejuoso, on Monday revealed that it was President Muhammadu Buhari who advised him to remain with APC and not quit along with other defector – Senators sometimes ago.

Tejuoso also advocated for use of direct primary as a best democratic method to select candidates in Ogun State for the next general elections by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District who made this known to reporters in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, while declaring his intention to re- contest for the seat, maintained that he still a member of the party and not a politician that moves around.

He declared that he would not leave the APC provided that President Muhammadu Buhari also remained with the party.

According to him, when he quitted the party with some Senators, the President called him that he wants him to stay

He noted that President’s action and call were  a great honour done to him.

The medical doctor – turned politician recalled that President Buhari asked him what he (the Senator) wants him to tell the Senator’s monarch father, Osile of Oke-Ona,  Oba Adedapo Tejuoso  who is a close friend of the President, if his son leaves APC.

He revealed that he has been with President Buhari since his time in All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and they have both lost election together three times, describing him as a mentor and a person whose nobody can contest his integrity.

He disclosed that what happened was just a mere misunderstanding between him and the party at the local level, which, he said, has since been resolved.

“I cannot leave APC. I will only leave if President Buhari leaves. When the incident happened, Mr. President called me and told me he wants me back in the party. What happened is just a misunderstanding in the local and it has been resolved.

“You know Ogun state is known in Nigeria to be the first in most things. It has been established that for democracy to thrive and to catch up with that of the developed nations, direct primaries is the answer and since Ogun state is always the first I am sure my governor will surely support it because he always want the best for the state.

“I am sure he will lead and others will follow and we are going to do direct primaries by God’s grace in Ogun state and I am sure my governor will agree.

“So that everybody in the party can have their say and choose whoever they want. Anybody who offer themself for election let the people agree that you are competent enough. So let everybody vote.

“It shouldn’t be a scenario of where few people will just be gathered somewhere and somebody will then tell them what to do. We want a change and that is what our party is preaching.

“We want direct primaries; we don’t want indirect primaries where some people will owe some people because they are the one who help them achieve the success they have achieved.

“Some of us are beneficiaries in the past but that shouldn’t continue because we have benefitted from such, there must be a change because we can’t leave this for our children,” Tejuoso said.

    …says it’s poised for victory in 2019

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) will elect the state chairman and other party officers Tuesday.

Osinowo added that the conduct of the congress was in line with the provisions of the ADC constitution and described the exercise as the first step to victory for the party in the 2019 governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, House of Assembly and LGAs elections in the state.

“I assure Ogun residents and Nigerians that the leadership of ADC at the state and national level is set to provide a responsible and responsive opposition till we takeover in 2019.

“This is against the alarming scenario of the unyielding actions, unemployment, economic lull, insecurity created by the ruling party that has failed to admit its failure to deliver the professed ‘Change’.

“The firsthand feelers from the electorate and residents indicate that a significant number of them are disillusioned with the style of governance adopted by the ruling party in the state and determined to seek alternative platform.

“A lot of civil servants, artisans and investing public are tired of poverty inflicted on the people by the ruling party, they described as an expired drug and they can’t wait for ADC to subvert it.”

  • More women abusing drugs to forget disappointments, sorrows  – NAFDAC

More women in Nigeria are getting involved in drug abuse from mixed concoctions to momentary “forget their worries and problems” of living.
Also, unsuspecting members of the public, particularly those who eat from roadside eateries and make shift ‘bukateria’ are getting hooked  on drugs without them knowing because some unscrupulous food vendors mix their delicacies with concoctions to induce addiction to their meals and boost sales.
The Assistant Director, Drug Demand Reduction Division (DDRD) of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Pharm.(Mrs) Clara Anyanwu, who disclosed these trends
to reporters at the weekend, identified “noodles” as one fast food such unscrupulous food sellers prepare with drugs and serve  customers.
Mrs. Anyanwu said this informed why some people would by – pass many locations and go some distances away to patronise a particular food vendor, whereas there are other food sellers nearby.
She spoke shortly after delivering a talk – shop on ‘abnormal drug use: the modern vices militating against elevation (of youths) by God,’ at the 2018 National Youth Convention of the Fresh Anointing International Church, Km 58, Lagos – Abeokuta expressway, Akinale, Ogun State.
Anyanwu revealed that the degree of youth and women involvement in drugs abuse is “scary and serious,” hinting that the official “standard statistics” on drugs abuse in the country and demography of people affected, would be made known soon by the appropriate Federal Government ministry.
She said Nigerians should “stop living in denial” over drugs abuse, saying aside tramadol which was banned because of its abuse, people are “mixing things” unimaginable and consuming them to get high and as a  escape from worries.

She lauded the church for initiating a programme where the youths were enlightened on the dangers, and identified, peers influence, ignorance, curiosity and wrong examples from parents as the factors driving drugs abuse in the country.
Over 2000 youths and children participated at the two day – long event, where an Operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) also enlightened the participants on the dangers of cyber crimes and the need to steer away from it lest they jeopardize their bright future.
The Church’s Bishop, Dr. Adegoke Itiola, said the church would continue to organise such programme to mould the youth to be on the right path so that they would be profitable to themselves, families, society and the nation.
  • Pray for Amosun not to renege on promise to Ogun West – Kuyebi

An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Engr Temitope Kuyebi, has called on the people of Yewa-Awori(Ogun West) to keep praying for Governor Ibikunle Amosun not to renege on his promise to work for the realization of the zone’s dream of producing the next governor of Ogun state in 2019.

Kuyebi, the youngest among the zone’s governorship aspirants, said the “2019 Ogun West for Governorship Agenda” can’t be achieved without interceding on behalf of Amosun so that he does  not falter in his avowed resolve to hand over the baton of power to Ogun West person in May 2019

The aspirant who hails from Imasai in Yewa North, made the call on Saturday while addressing a crowd of APC members, supporters and youth leaders at Asade Agunloye Pavilion, Empire  building, Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun state.

He noted that the zoning of the governorship ticket of APC to Ogun West was a good omen but warned that the golden opportunity zoning presented to the area, must not be allowed to elude them this time.

He said the incumbent Governor is very critical to the actualization of the governorship project of Ogun West hence the need to keep interceding for him lest 2019 becomes a mirage again to Ogun West.

“Without Governor Ibikunle Amosun in this project, the dream of a Yewa candidate mounting the saddle of the governorship leadership of Ogun state, come 2019 may become a mirage.

“The leadership of our great party (APC) in Ogun State has zoned the governorship ticket to Ogun West which translates to our prayers being answered. So, we must not toy with this opportunity.

“Our gathering here today is to raise ambassadors and partners for this great opportunity coming ahead of us in Ogun West. Teamwork had always been one of the core values in life, because togetherness we can make it and achieve much, but not alone.

“Secondly, we are gathered here to interact and brainstorm on how to uphold and support my aspiration to be the next governor of Ogun State come 2019.

“I am not new in this governorship project. I had once taken a shot at the number one plum job in the state in 2011 and that was on the platform of the Action Congress (AC). I was the consensus governorship candidate and endorsed to fly the AC ticket but in a meeting in Lagos, party leaders asked me to step down,” Kuyebi said.

However, guest speaker at the occasion, Mr Bayo Idowu, appealed to the sons and daughters of Ogun West to bury their differences and support the Yewa-Awori governorship agenda.

“This is the right time for us in Ogun West. Let us throw our weight behind Engineer Temitope Kuyebi to be the governor of this state come 2019,” he said.

  • Ojude-Oba: Saraki preaches unity of Nigerians

…As Ijebu people mark Ojude Oba carnival in splendour

Amid a cloudy sky above and a wave of excitements on ground,  Ijebu – Ode, the Ogun State royal town of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, turned aglow with celebrations for the better part of Thursday as the Ijebu sons and daughters celebrated their Ojude Oba annual cultural carnival in glamour and splendour.

Over 35 age grades – Regberegbes – all dressed in colourful and distinguishing attires to showcase their rich cultural heritage, took turn to pay homage to Oba Adetona after series of rhythmic dance steps round the oval shaped arena of the festival arcade.

The regberegbes were closely followed in this rite by the dozens of horse riders (Eleshins) and descendants of the town’s baloguns (Ijebu warlords) by noon during which the carnival peaked with an estimated15, 000 people participating even as Dane guns boomed intermittently.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who was the Special guest of honour for this year Ojude Oba and whose arrival was greeted with applause, hailed Ojude Oba as a cultural festival that “fosters unity” among the Ijebus.

Saraki, whose  entourage include Senators – Dino Melaye (Kogi State), Ben Bruce (Bayelsa State), Abiodun Olujimi (Ekiti State), Duro Faseyi (Ekiti State), Buruji Kashamu(Ogun State), Shaba Lafiaji(Kwara State), Sam Anyanwu(Imo State), Saraki’s  media aide, Alh. Olaniyonu Yusuph and more, urged  Nigerians to emulate the Ijebu people, who despite their diversity of faiths,  live and interact harmoniously with one another.

The Senate president described the over 100 years old festival as a “noble culture” that has continued to serve as a veritable rallying point for all sons and daughters of Ijebu nation.

He said whenever the issue of “resilience and dynamism of culture” is being discussed, Ojude – Oba readily comes to mind, adding that the festival has continued to grow from strength to strength because of the leadership quality of the Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Adetona.

He noted that it has also become obvious that only quality leadership could engender progress and development such as the type witnessed in Ijebuland.

He lauded the Awujale whose unifying force, he said, is an  attestation to his good leadership, not only in Ijebu and Ogun state but also in the entire country.

He described the equestrian touch of the horse riding by the family of horse riders and descendants of the baloguns which was a noticeable feature of the  Ojude Oba carnival as one that depicts the festival’s nobleness.

According to him, Nigeria should draw strength from her diversity like the Ijebu people and not use her  diversity to create barrier or wedge to national unity and progress.

He urged Nigerians, particularly leaders, to create programmes that would engenders unity and peaceful co – existence of people.

“Ojude Oba fosters unity among all Ijebu people, and this is another way in which we as a nation could take a leaf from this festival. Unity is paramount; unity is key. When we are united, we achieve more. When we are united, we record monumental progress.

“I urge us all, therefore, to pursue more activities that will unite our various peoples. Our diversity is our strength. We must, therefore, continue to initiate programmes that will bring us together and further highlight the fact that we are one and the same.

“In over a century of Ojude Oba, Ijebu citizens have shown us that unity will always lead to progress, and that there is strength in unity. This is a shining example for us all.

“When we talk about the resilience and dynamism of culture, Ojude Oba is a case in point. It is always wonderful to see this proud display of culture that you have consistently showcased for over a hundred years.

I expect that memories of today will linger on in the minds of all who are here, or see the images. The visual feast of the Regberegbes (Age Grades) is already well known and iconic, as they present themselves before Kabiyesi in colourful uniform attires made with creativity and flair, and pray for his continued health and long life.

Also famous is the equestrian parade by the Baloguns of the Ruling Houses, memorable for its display of a noble tradition. I must admit that this part of the festival holds a special appeal for me, due to its similarity to the Durbar in my part of the country, the latest of which we held in Ilorin just on Thursday.

In the array of sartorial tradition of this festival, as evident in the impressive attires worn by the various groups, Ojude Oba promotes and reinforces the culture of the people.

“Indeed, there is much assurance in the knowledge that these activities are in a continuum with the past; they show that we can always draw the best from that glorious past to shore us up for the challenges

“While Ojude Oba provides a platform for the Ijebus to meet, interact and showcase their cultural heritage, we also know that the significance of the festival goes much deeper. Typically held on the third day after Eid el Kabir, this is a festival that unites the faiths.

“Despite its origins in Islam, the festival does not exclude any religious groups. I would like to say, with some emphasis, that our dear country, Nigeria, would do well to draw important lessons from an event such as this.

“We are one. Religion should not constitute a wedge or barrier between us. This is what illustrious Ijebu people demonstrate to us yearly with this festival. Muslims, Christians and others can be found among us here today, and I understand that this is how it has been since the very beginning.

“This is salutary, and worthy of commendation to Nigeria and the world.  In addition, Ojude Oba affirms that Nigeria’s cultures are veritable sources of revenue, if well packaged. With the return of thousandsof people to their ancestral homes for this festival, and thousands more attending as visitors, the local economy will, without a doubt, get a boost.

“This is tourism in action. Essentially, domestic tourism is being promoted here, and this is how it should be all over the country. It is therefore necessary for more parts of Nigeria to follow this worthy example, in order to showcase the beauty of our culture to the larger world,” Saraki said.

In attendance at this year Ojude Oba include the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Yetunde Onanuga, former governor Gbenga Daniel, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Oloori Omooba Subomi Balogun, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Speaker Suraju Adekunbi among others.
