  • ‘Obasanjo influenced Abeokuta as Ogun State capital’

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has said Abeokuta was not among the cities considered as the Ogun State capital by the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed, when it was created in 1976.

He said it was Gen. Muhammed’s deputy, the then Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, Lt.-Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, an Egba man, who used his position to bring the Ogun State capital to the town.

The monarch spoke at the weekend at the turbaning of Princess Khadijat Adebisi Edionsere (popularly called Cash Madam), as the first iya suna of Ogun State by the Muslim Council.

Adetona, a former chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas, however, noted that he saw nothing wrong in ex-President Obasanjo’s action, saying he only proved “to be a true son of Abeokuta.”

The royal father, who is the president of the Ogun State Muslim Council, hailed Governor Ibikunle Amosun for his developmental projects, urging the people to support him.

His words: “It is good to use your position to positively affect your people. When Ogun State was to be created, Abeokuta was not the city recommended as the capital. But because Obasanjo was the second-in- command, he took the capital to Abeokuta. I don’t condemn his action, I am only saying our people should learn from that.”

  • Group inaugurates student association in Covenant varsity

Group inaugurates student association in Covenant varsity

A new chapter of the Africa’s Young Entrepreneur Students Association (AYESA) has been inaugurated at Covenant University in Otta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

The inauguration is an evidence of Africa’s Young Entrepreneur (AYE)’s commitments to developing and empowering young entrepreneurs in Nigeria and across Africa.

AYESA in Covenant is not only about having students who start their own businesses, it is also about students who set their own goals in life as AYESA assists them with means to achieve them.

According to Summy Francis, AYE President, “It is about initiatives and proactive attitudes to solving problems that matter to people. It is about the university working closely with the surrounding society and private sector.

“AYESA is about understanding what you need to know to achieve something, and how to learn it. And this last part is what universities have a hard time adjusting to.

“For students to be creative, innovative and entrepreneurial, we cannot merely have them memorize what the curriculum requires, and cannot just keep them in the classroom.

“Real innovation and creativity happens in interaction with real life. Hence our platform will help them interact more with independent entrepreneurs within the AYE network present in 19 African countries that have the best interest of the young ones at heart,” Francis said.

Prof. Charles Ayo, Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, while delivering his speech at the inauguration observed that the institution shared similar vision with AYE, noting that the institution is envisioned with raising a new generation of leaders in all fields of human endeavour.

According to him, the lack of leadership capacity is evident in all businesses in the country.

“If you ask me what we have as a continent, I would say the whole continent is in disarray, therefore making it practically impossible for anybody to maintain development and when you think of development, you will remember an environment that is beclouded with anarchy, no way to survive,” the VC noted.

Prof Ayo however noted that the Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo was right about the introduction of a degree programme on entrepreneurship in the institution affirming that entrepreneurship is the future for Africa.

Similarly, Prof. Iyoha Francis, Dean of College of Business and Social Sciences said that business trust is more than physical capital which keeps people on in a business hence the need for all tertiary institutions in Africa to embrace AYESA.

The Dean stressed that people think being unethical could bring immediate results but the long run effects are very terrible, which are the values AYESA is dedicated to impacting on African Students

“So as you go on in this your crusade, please ensure that you build this business trust into your people. Let them know that it is better to be ethical in business dealings because it has effects on every aspect of business transactions”, he advised.

The management team of Covenant University, who gladly welcomed the initiative, expressed satisfaction at the inauguration of the AYE Students Association in the institution.

Elated Igwedinma Anofienem, AYESA Students’ Managing Director (also Students’ Governor, Covenant University) emphasized the need for such initiative to be introduced on all campuses of higher learning in Nigeria and in Africa as this is a solid medium to eradicate unemployment.

  • We are not involved in money laundering – Mrs. Amosun

We are not involved in money laundering – Mrs. Amosun

Wife of Governor Ibikunle Amosun,  Mrs Olufunso Amosun, on Friday said she was never arrested or detained anywhere in the world for money laundering offence or any crime by security agency.

Mrs.  Amosun said the wave of her purported arrest and detention abroad(UK) that is making the rounds on the social media are fictitious, falsehood and rumours concocted by mischief makers and idle minds.

The First Lady debunked the rumour while fielding questions from reporters in Abeokuta, the state capital, shortly after distributing free milk and other items to expectant and lactating mothers at the state hospital, Ijaiye.

The items were donated to hundreds of beneficiaries by Olufunso Amosun on behalf of the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Hajia Aisha Buhari – the donor.

The Governor’s wife said she and her husband are people of integrity and would not engage in money laundering or anything negative.

She said: “Well, I thank you for that and that you called it a rumour. I never did anything of that nature. But as you can see me to the glory of God, it’s not my portion; it shall never be my portion.

“And I believe that you know your Governor, His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun fca, I’m sure you know he’ll never be involved in anything that is associated with money laundering or anything negative like that.

“So, as you said, it’s a rumour and it shall remain so. It didn’t happen, it hasn’t happened and it shall not happen.”

  • Gunmen kill Lord’s Chosen Pastor in Lagos

Gunmen kill Lord’s Chosen Pastor in Lagos

Suspected armed robbers on Monday killed a senior pastor at the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries.

The deceased, Pastor Chukwuemeka Akpokpo according to church members, was the Lagos zonal coordinator of the church founded by Lazarus Mouka, which has its headquarters in Ijesha, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

It was learned that Akpokpo was gunned down by men operating on three motorcycles, who according to sources trailed him from a commercial bank around Apple Junction in Festac, Amuwo Odofin.

It was gathered that his assailants shot him severally to ensure he was dead before they sped off with the three million Naira (N3million) he was said to have withdrawn from the bank.

The Nation reports that there have been several incidences of motorcyclists ambushing bank customers along the busy Oshodi Apapa Expressway, with no arrest made by the police.

When the news of Akpokpo’s death broke in the church and his body brought, the church members reportedly prayed from that time till about 8pm, hoping a miracle will happen and he would resurrect.

The Pastor is believed to have had premonition about his death, as a church member was said to have claimed he complained of tiredness all Sunday night.

The said member had told others he slept in the same place with Akpokpo on Sunday night because they attended a crusade in Ogun state over the weekend.

According to one Mrs. Onyinye, Akpokpo was killed around 12pm on Monday.

The woman who said the Pastor was married with young children but does not know his residence, wondered why his assailants did not take the money and spare his life.

Onyinye who said the zonal pastor’s killers were hired assassins, explained that Akpokpo left his car and ran into the bush for safety but his assailants went after him.

“They started trailing him before he got to the bank. When he noticed they were pursuing him. He left his car and ran away. He ran into the bush and they followed him.

“We heard that his killers while shooting him said he should come and collect the post. It is not the first time they have attempted to kill him.

“There was a day he parked his car but before he could come out, all his tyres have been deflated. So, I don’t think it was just a case of armed robbery. They are hired assassins,” she maintained.

Similarly, one Mathew corroborated Chineye’s theory of assassination,  adding that there are a lot of people who envied Akpokpo’s position as zonal coordinator in charge of Lagos.

“Pastor Emeka (Akpokpo) might have been assassinated by those who are envious of his position.

“Aside being zonal coordinator, he is in-charge of building and I am sure he was killed by some envious people who want to take over his seat.

“Many see him as being too favoured by the General overseer of the Church, (Mouka). Many of them were jealous of the Pastor who was trusted by the GO.

“In fact, the church did not believe it that the Pastor was actually dead. When his corpse was brought to the Church, we kept praying from 12.30 to 8p.m hoping that God would revive him because, we love him so much.

He was later taken to his home town, near Umuahia, Abia state around 8pm. Insisting that the deceased was assassinated, Matthew said his killers ensured he was dead before they left him.

He urged the police to consider other options and not just conclude that Akpokpo’s killers were armed robbers because they collected money.

He said: “Why I said so is that the Pastor offered all he had to the gunmen and they still went ahead to kill him.

“He was shot severally till he gave up the ghost. His killers made sure that they pumped enough bullets into his body and made sure that he died before they left the scene.

“If it was armed robbery attack, the robbers would have collected the money and left in a hurry, but the killers made sure they remained till he finally died.”

But another Church member, Madu however felt the bank staff must have conspired with the armed men to dispossess Akpokpo of the money.

He urged the police to interrogate the bank officer in-charge of the account the money was withdrawn from, adding that the person was aware the Pastor was coming to make such withdrawals.

“I can bet you that the robbery was an insider’s connection either from the bank or the church. He already notified the account officer he was coming for the money before leaving the Church.

“He was actually trailed to the bank by the robbers. The Police should interrogate the account officer of the bank,” said Madu.

When contacted the police spokesman for the state, DSP Ken Nwosu confirmed the incident.
He however stated that the Pastor was gunned by two armed men who operated on a motorcycle, adding that investigations were ongoing to unravel the culprits.

  • Gunmen assassinate Egba Chief, leaves note on motive of killing

An Egba Chief,  Moses Oyebade, has been killed in a gun attack on his home at the Ikanna compound in Ago-Oba area of Abeokuta south Local Government Area of Ogun state.

Oyebade who until being cut down, was the Oluwo of Ikanna, was shot dead while lying on a bed by gunmen who stormed his home about 12 am on Wednesday.

The Nation gathered that the broke the glass window pane of his bed room and shot Chief Oyebade, who recently marked his 75th birthday in Lagos, at close range.

It was gathered the slain chief was the lone occupant of the building at the time his assailants struck while the police had also evacuated his remains after the killing was reported at the Ibara Police Station.

The victim’s  first son, Oluyemi Oyebade, told reporters that attempts were made in the past  by unknown persons  to eliminate his father.

“My father was sleeping in his bedroom. The bed is close to the window. As the glass was broken, he woke up to see what happened. He took his torch to see who was there. That was how he was shot.

“The first gunshot was in his hand which was seriously damaged. Maybe when he was still struggling, they shot him again. I guess they shot him three times.” he said.

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the killer of the Egba chief left a note after the attack.

“We have a case of murder at hand concerning Apena of Ikanna Chief Moses Oyebade.  Some men went to his residence, broke his window and shot him  at 12: am .

“We have examined the place and recovered assassination note which contained a message written in both English and Yoruba languages.

“The content read useless man, Oni dokudo (promiscuous ). In our  preliminary  investigation,  it could be a case of assassination. We will invite some people for interrogation.

“The state Police Commissioner,  Valentine Ntomchukwu has directed that the case be transfered to department of  criminal investigation.

“The perpetrators would not go Scot  free. The commissioner of Police sympathises with the family,  even,  the Kabiyesi,  the Alake of Egbaland.”

  • The remaking of Ogun State

    The remaking of Ogun State

Before May 29, 2011, Ogun State was nowhere in the comity of developed states in this country. In spite of its pride in having indigenes who are holding sway in both political and economic circles, it remained at the lower rung of the ladder as far as 21st century development parameter were concerned.

The Gateway state which was established on 3rd February, 1976, was at that time in dire need of urgent solution to its insecurity challenge, collapse of educational sector, outright economic doldrums, youths unrest and unemployment, among others.

Hence, the reason for the choice of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who on taking the oath of office clearly spelt out the five cardinal programmes of his administration, tagged, “Mission to Rebuild Ogun,” which borders around effective, qualitative and affordable education, efficient health care delivery service, affordable housing and urban development, agricultural industrialization and rural development as well as employment generation.

Senator Amosun-led administration without delay invested hugely in security and addressed infrastructural deficit in order to rid the state of miscreants who were sold out to violence as well as re-define the landscape of the state. These resulted in the peace and tranquility being enjoyed today which had successively won Ogun the most secured state in the last four years.

The infrastructural revolution is characterised by expansion of existing roads into six lanes and construction of new ones in both urban and rural areas across the three senatorial districts.

The passion to redefine the landscape of the state informed the decision of the government to embark on the construction of flyovers, thereby breaking the jinx of not having any of such constructed by the state government since its creation.

His administration in four years has over 18 flyovers to show in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Odogbolu, Sagamu, Sango-Akute-Ojodu-Abiodun road, Ilaro township road, Ijebu-Igbo, among others, as part of its ways of transforming the state into a mega city.

However, numerous eminent Nigerians, including late Prof. Dora Akunyili, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Aminu Tambuwal and even the sons of the soil, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Ernest Sonekan and  General Oladipupo Diya, among others, pulled their weight behind the strides of Amosun-led government, describing it as “turning the state into a huge construction site” in the manner it engaged in “politics of development”.

The two editions of world class investors’ forum organised by the present administration in March 2012 and May 2014 in Abeokuta have been good platforms to showcase business potentials in the state across all sectors.

The fruits of these efforts did not wait too long to yield as it is on record that between 2011 and 2015,over 80 mega companies, including the US largest investment in Africa, Procter and Gambler, have opened businesses in Ogun, thereby making it the most industrialised state in the country.

Even the immediate President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, affirmed that he had visited Ogun, not for fanfare but for commissioning of multi-million dollars companies more than any state in the country. While commending Governor Amosun “for making this part of the nation attractive to investors,” he said, “soonest, no resident of Ogun would be without job.”

However, one of Amosun’s populist policies and programmes that particularly touches residents is the novel regime in the acquisition of Certificate of Occupancy, popularly referred to as C of O. Through this new C of O initiative, home and land owners in Ogun State have gotten what could be described as a ‘relieve package.’

Through the initiative, the state government has reduced land title fees from N430, 000 to N100, 000. Prior to this new regime, a building approval cost N275,000; survey plan was N60,000, stamp duty was N45,000 and the C of O was N50,000. However, with the new land title regime, tagged Homeowner’s Charter, building plan approval now costs N20,000; survey plan N20,000, stamp duty N20,000 and C of O N35,000.

Notwithstanding, one of the major heart-warming feats of the present administration is the report of the World Bank, Doing Business in Nigeria 2014, which rated Ogun, out of 35 states and FCT, as one of the 5 states “that made the biggest strides towards the national frontier of good practices.” The biennial report, released on 31st September, 2014, puts Ogun in the exclusive club of the top reforming states in Nigeria.

The same World Bank, in 2008 and 2010 reports, ranked Ogun State as one of the lowest overall performers among the 36 states in Nigeria in terms of ease of doing business. In other words, Ogun State was by then not conducive to business.

The report observed that in Ogun State, “The construction permitting system was radically overhauled, with the state government authorities decentralising the approval system and a new committee monitoring delays. Building permit applications and payments can now be made simultaneously in district offices. Private professionals issue environmental-impact assessments in accordance with the conditions and templates set out in a framework agreement. The certificate of completion is issued on the spot, immediately following the final inspection.”

The restoration of glorious old days of the  education sector which is on the front burner of the rebuilding mission was kick started with the introduction of free and qualitative education at both primary and secondary school levels and reduction of tertiary institutions school fees by over 61% .

The government unified examination which is conducted every term in all public schools has helped to raise the bar of education in the state as well as to restore confidence in the system. Interestingly, the rate of students seeking admission into government owned schools has skyrocketed significantly compared to years before 2011.

Apart from construction and rehabilitation of schools to make the learning environment conducive, the icing on the cake in this sector is the construction of model schools in all local government areas, out of which 15 are already completed and ready for use. This innovation, according to the governor is targeted at the best brains regardless of their financial status. And it would further enhance the academic standard in the Gateway State.

The sterling performance of Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the last four years across all strata, without mincing words, made his victory at the polls not to come as a surprise. It was a deserved victory.”One good turn”, they say, “deserves another.”Hence, he stated in his acceptance speech to consolidate on the success of the first term is noteworthy.

It would not be a surprise if the light rail project becomes functional in no time. No one would see the Cargo Airport in Iperu area of the state coming to reality as a rude shock. The Olokola Free Trade Zone which would drastically give a quantum leap to our state’s economy would not be an incredible feat if it comes to fruition and the completion of ongoing projects in all the nooks and cranies of the state would not be a shocking revelation. These assurances are owing to the fact that residents of the Gateway State voted for continuity which can only be achieved in Senator Ibikunle Amosun who once again took the oath of office on 29th May,2015.

    •Obasanjo hails conduct, Isiaka kicks

VOTERS in Ogun State’s 20 local government areas yesterday defied the rain and scorching sun to perform their civic obligation in the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

In most of the polling units visited in Abeokuta South,  Obafemi-Owode, Odeda, Abeokuta North, Iyewa South, North, Ijebu-Ode, Ado-Odo Ota, Imeko-Afon and Sagamu-Remo areas, voters turned out early though in low figures for accreditation in the sun.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ad hoc officials and security agents also reported at the polling units early.

In Abeokuta South Local Government Area, accreditation started at GRA Field 1, Ward 15, Unit 11 at about 8.02am while voting began at about 1pm after about 201 voters were accredited.

Similar time was also recorded for accreditations at nearby GRA Field 2 Ward 15, Unit 12.

But accreditations started at 8am at Ward15 Unit 12 while voting began at 1.30pm.

In Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, INEC officials and security agents were on their toes at the largest polling area in the council, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Primary School.

It housed four voting units in Ward 7. Accreditation began in the area at about 8.30am while voting commenced at about 1.35pm.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stated that Nigeria was maturing in its democratic process with the success of the 2015 general elections.

Obasanjo, who spoke shortly after his accreditation at Ward 11, Unit 22 of Olusomi Compound polling centre at Sokori area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, noted that there was a relative slight drop in the turn-out of voters.

But, the former president still adjudged the exercise as successful.

His words: “The reports that got to me indicate that there is a general low turn-out across the nation, but the exercise has been orderly and peaceful.

“Such low turn -out is normal and should be expected because people normally show more interest in national elections than the state elections.

“I commend INEC for improving on their last performance because many people who did not have PVCs in this area have now gotten their cards.

“There were apprehensions concerning the polls because of some people who were beating drums of war. But we thank God for taking control.

“I think on the whole, Nigerians should be proud of their performance.

“We have done it for West Africa, we have done it for Africa and we have now done it for ourselves.

“Nigerians can now raise their heads in honour anywhere because there are evidences that our democracy is fast maturing.”

Despite the rain in Ijebu-Ode, 213 voters were accredited at ward 5 polling units 4 and 295.

The electorate maintained orderliness despite the rain to ensure voting began immediately after the accreditation at 1:30pm

Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Prince Gboyega Isiaka, however lodged a complaint at the office of the INEC office in Imeko that an All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain and a House of Representatives member was surreptitiously moving around n Imeko Afon local council, a claim he wanted to investigated.

Isiaka, who stormed the office at about 1.40pm, said he was inundated with calls from people in Obolo  area of the local government that the lawmaker was moving round the town to canvass votes for the APC.

Isiaka, who was attended to by INEC Election Officer (EO) Mr. Omo Are, said: “Many people called from Obolo and environs to report that he was going from one place to the other.

“We want the INEC to investigate why he left his local council and be moving round Imeko/Afon which is contrary to the Electoral Act.

“I want to know the number of registered voters and number of PVCs distributed in Obolo in particular.

“I would not have been bothered but for stories of illegal thumb printing we are hearing, though yet to be confirmed.

“But I want INEC officials to be wary of the desperation of some people to undermine the process.”

Are assured Isiaka that the issue will be thoroughly investigated.

  • …Amosun, wife hopeful of victory

    …Amosun, wife hopeful of victory

Governor Ibikunle Amosun yesterday raised the alarm over open inducement of voters with cash as well as security breaches, including snatching of ballot papers in parts of Ogun state during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Amosun, who is seeking reelection on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), cast his vote by 1:30pm at the polling unit 004, Ajura Ward 4, situated at St John’s School, Ajura, in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

He expressed optimism that he would win.

His wife, Olufunso Amosun, also voted at the same polling unit and ward few minutes later.

The lauded the voting procedure and processes with minimal delay from the card reader and commended voters for turning out massively to exercise their right.

He however expressed disappointment that even when the country is striving to improve the election process with technology, some politicians were attempting to sabotage the effort by engaging in electoral violence and other vices.

Amosun said: “I’ve been briefed about some security breaches, which I want to believe that security operatives have put in check, particularly now that voting has commenced.

“I’ve been told about those cases in Ipokia, Ikenne, even in Abeokuta; people bringing money to the polling centres, openly distributing it to lure people to vote.

“But those ones I know that the security operatives will do their jobs. But the one that worries me – I’ve even been told, they are taking vehicles round the town and dropping four men at every location; and your guess is as good as mine what those four people would do.

“Even the military and police accosted some people in Itele and all of them have been taken to army barracks there in Ilese.

“They were there with ballot papers and a lot of things. I wasn’t there, we were phoned.

“But I’m happy to commend the security agencies for their efforts because they were there, they even resisted them.

“I understand that the policemen ran away, maybe they are fake policemen or whatever.

“We have been informed that all of them have been surrounded and taken to the barracks. I’m sure they would hand them over to the police. Those boxes, I’m sure they would have collected them.

  • 2015 Polls: Low turn out of voters in Ogun

2015 Polls: Low turn out of voters in Ogun

Accreditation of voters started as early as 8:20am in most of the polling units in Akute, Ajuwon, Alagbole, Ifo local government areas of Ogun state.

‎In polling unit 9, Fabolude, Akute area, accreditation started at 8:20am with about 572 registered voters in this Unit.

In Unit 008, Ward 6, Fabolude, accreditation started at about the same time but with 586 registered voters in this unit.

In Unit 11, Ishasi, it was a different story when The Nation visited the polling unit.

As at 10:00am, not a single voter had been accredited. Although INEC officials were available at the unit as early as 8am, accreditation could start because the card readers did not work.

The Polling Officer at the Unit explained that the card readers had since been returned to RAC for checks.

He told The Nation that the option of manual accreditation of voters was completely rejected by party agents, hence, no electoral activity has taken place.

When this reporter returned to the unit at 11:30am, intending voters were seen sitting in small groups, waiting for when the card readers would be returned.

INEC officials there were also still expecting “further directive” from their superior officers.

In Ogunlowo Unit 005, Ward 6, located in Akute‎/ Ajuwon, voters’ accreditation began at about 8:30am with total registered voters being 488.

Oladipo Adebisi, Adekunle Olaoye, and Jimoh Ibrahim, agents of APC, PDP and SDP respectively, expressed satisfaction with the accreditation process.

Ibrahim said voters took time before coming out because INEC officials did not arrive early during the Presidential elections; so they expected same today.

A voter, Mrs. Bello Bolatito, confirmed the smooth flow of the accreditation. She said the turn out today is more impressive than that of a fortnight.

Asked why she stayed back after accreditation, she simply said: “I want to see everything myself; I have brought my food along and there are food vendors around here, so no problem,” she said.

Similarly on Moses Adebayo street, Lagos state, voting commenced at 1:10pm in Unit 019, Ward B, Ojodu, Lagos with about 416 accredited voters in this unit.

Mrs. Muhammud Kayafat, an agent to one of the political parties, told The Nation that the process had been peaceful since the commencement of accreditation till voting started.
