  • Pastors held for ‘killing’ in-law in Ogun

The police in Ogun have arrested two self- acclaimed pastors of God of Possibilities Church for allegedly killing their brother-in-law, Peter Chukwuyem.

The suspects, Chukwuka Stephen, 43 and Ejim Stephen, 39, both brothers, committed the alleged offence on February 5 but were arrested February 24.

It was gathered that the deceased married the suspects’ elder sister and brought them to live with his family from their village in Delta State.

The suspects were said to have converted the frontage of the man’s home at Papa Ibafo in Ogun State to a church, which the deceased found unpleasant and chased them away.

As a result of that, the brothers nursed animosity for their sister’s husband and allegedly butchered him at his farm on the evening of February 5.

Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said the suspects initially denied committing the crime but when they were confronted by the man’s children, they opened up.

Oyeyemi said: “On February 5, the deceased went to his farm with two of his teenage daughters in the morning and met the two suspects at the farm because, of the presence of the girls, they were unable to do anything to him for fear of being exposed.

“In the evening of the same day, the deceased went back to the farm alone and the suspects who have been waiting for him at the farm accosted him and matcheted him to death.

“It was when the deceased didn’t return on time that his wife traced him to the farm and met his dead body.

“She subsequently went to Ibafo police station where she lodged complaint. The two brothers were later arrested by the police at Ibafo on account of the two daughters of the deceased who informed the police that they saw the two of them earlier in their father’s farm.

“On interrogation, the two suspects denied killing their brother in-law but when they were confronted by the two daughters of the deceased, they confessed to the crime.

“They said they did it because he deprived them of continuing using of his frontage for their church activities.

“The corpse of the deceased was subsequently removed and deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination.

“The Commissioner of Police Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for proper investigation and prosecution.”

  • Ogun guber election: true reflection of people’s will – APC

The Ogun state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday appraised the March 9 governorship elections in the state and declared that the outcome was a true reflection of the will of Ogun people.

The party added that it was “heart-warming, that despite the harassment, intimidation and sponsored violence from known quarters in the state, the people of Ogun spoke with their votes on who they preferred to govern the state for the next four years.

In a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, in Abeokuta, APC observed that
the election recorded over one hundred and fifty-eight thousand voters more than the National Assembly elections, a demonstration that Ogun people were really determined to choose who becomes their governor.

The statement reads: “It is beyond a reasonable doubt that our candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, won fair and square as confirmed by all other candidates in the governorship election, except the sore loser and his paymaster.

“Our people showed more concern in the governorship election. While the total votes for the Senate were 549, 909, the House of Reps were 552, 223, and Presidential elections had 605, 738 voters; a total of 708, 807 voters participated in the governorship elections.”

“Furthermore, never in the annals of governorship elections in Ogun State, had the winner received such outpouring of congratulatory messages, encouragement, promised support and visitations by his co-contestants. Prince Buruji Kashamu, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, Otunba Rotimi Paseda, Chief Tope Tokoya, Mr. Adewale Omoniyi, and about other ten political parties and candidates have either sent goodwill messages or visited the winner or placed congratulatory adverts in the newspapers, in a commendable demonstration of good spirit of sportsmanship.

“Having submitted itself to the authority of Election Petition Tribunal, we urged the Allied Peoples’ Movement to stop its campaign of calumny against our candidate, and its seeming patronage of the Tribunal with its amateur simulation in the media. We see this as deliberate and desperate campaign after elections. APM should allow the law to take its course.

“It is also on record that over 90% of those arrested on election day, by security and anti-corruption agencies for perpetrating election-related crimes on March 9, 2019 in Ogun State were well-known agents of the Allied Peoples’ Movement and top government officials in the outgoing regime. We, therefore, call on the relevant agencies to do the needful going forward. The APM is actually crying for being unable to execute its rigging plans.

“The APM, with a sitting Governor as its chief promoter, and despite the enormous state resources deployed and poured into the process, who could not muster a convincing win in 1/3 of the 20 LG’s in Ogun State should bury its head in shame and stop campaigning after elections. If the governorship elections in Ogun State is to be held several times again, the margin for our candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun, can only increase.

  • Jealous husband kills wife’s lover in Ogun

Police in Ogun state have arrested a man, Ajibade Olumuyiwa(25), for hacking one Olakitan Balogun, a cobbler to death over suspicion that he was having illicit affairs with his wife.

The suspect had returned home late last March 16, met the secret lover in the house with his wife, and in a fit of fury attacked him, striking his head repeatedly against the wall until he dropped to the floor dead.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made this known in a release on Wednesday, stated that the suspect was arrested at about 1:45 am of the day following a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer(DPO), Ajuwon division by residents of Doland Estate that a man has “murdered his wife’s concubine right inside his house.”

Abimbola, a Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP), added that the Ajunwon DPO, Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP), Afolabi Kazeem, upon receiving the distress call, mobilised detectives to the scene and arrested the suspect.

The Police Image maker in the state, stated that the suspect claimed to have returned home about 12: 30 midnight on the fateful day and met the deceased inside the house with his wife, and in anger began to beat him, banging his head against the wall until he was dead.

But the suspect’s wife, Titilayo Olayiwola, denied having any immoral relationship with the victim, alleging that the suspect had abandoned her in the house for the past eight months with an instruction to the gateman to be monitoring and feeding him with information if he sees her with any man.

She stated further that the victim was a cobbler living within the area and on that day, the deceased’s girlfriend came to pay him visit and since he is not living alone, he decided to bring the girl to a room in the house due to his closeness to the family.

unfortunately, as soon as the gateman saw him, he alerted the husband, who rushed to the house and descended heavily on the deceased without listening to any explanation from her and the girlfriend to the victim.

The Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the remains of the victim have been deposited at the general hospital mortuary for post mortem examination while the case has also been transferred to the homicide section of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation.

  • Ogun APC to banks: don’t approve Amosun’s loan requests

The Ogun State Chapter of All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has warned banks and other financial institutions not to yield to threats and pressures from the out – going Governor Ibikunle Amosun to obtain last-minute loans, overdrafts and other financial instruments barely two months to the end of his tenure.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday by its publicity secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, the party warned that any institution that grants such requests “does so at its own risk”.

The press statement reads: “It has come to our notice that the outgoing governor has been exerting pressures on banks and financial institutions to grant frivolous loans, overdrafts and other instruments immediately Prince Dapo Abiodun was declared Governor-Elect.”

“We are equally aware that files and other sensitive governments’ documents are being moved out of government offices on the order of the outgoing Governor, His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.”

“It is therefore important to let it be known to the concerned public officers that it is part of their duties to protect public properties, including files, documents and information at their disposal.

“As anything contrary to this will be running foul of the laws and their oath of office. The allegiance of the civil servants is to Ogun State and not to any individual, no matter who.

“As for the banks, we want to state categorically that the incoming administration believes so much in the rule of law and due process. Therefore, the administration will not honour any obligation that did not follow due process or any loans that did not receive the prior approval of the State House of Assembly.

“According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, Ogun State’s Internally Generated Revenue has increased by 590 per cent in eight years totaling N74, 835, 979, 000.51 (seventy four billion, eight hundred and thirty five million, nine hundred seventy nine thousand naira and fifty one kobo).

“Why the outgoing administration still wants “injury-time” loans despite those already incurred, beats one’s imagination and leaves much to be desired. The incoming administration will not honour such shady loans.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) appeared to be heading for victory last night in the governorship election in Lagos, Ogun, Kwara, Kebbi, Sokoto and Bauchi States as results began coming in from the various polling booths.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was looking good in Adamawa, Enugu, Delta, Ebomyi and Akwa Ibom States.

In Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC who was projected by The Nation as the candidate to beat yesterday, established a strong lead ahead of his closest rival, Jimi Agbaje of the PDP with the majority of the votes   cast in such areas as Ikorodu, Alimoso, Badagry and Lagos Island.

Sanwo-Olu was the preferred candidate at Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s polling unit in Victoria Garden City, Lekki.

Prince Dapo Abiodun of APC held firm in most parts of Ijebu, Remo , Egbaland and Otta.

He also did well in Yewaland although Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM)   seemed to have an edge there, being an indigene.

Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of the APC appeared to have confirmed the uprooting of the PDP in Kwara State with another emphatic win.

AbdulRazaq won his polling unit at Idigba, Adewole ward with 592 votes as against PDP’s 80.

Announcing the results at the unit, the presiding officer declared that the APC polled 99 votes while the PDP scored 161 votes. The ADC candidate scored 51 votes while the SDP candidate got only one vote.

In the presidential elections of February 23, APC celebrated a victory over PDP at the same polling unit with 187 votes against 167 votes.

As it was during last month’s presidential and national assembly elections, many top politicians failed to deliver even their polling units.

Omosilade, who is  Fayose’s Personal Assistant, had earlier in a letter dated March 1 and addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, signified his intention to withdraw from the race.

  • Polls: Army arrests 19 in Lagos, Ogun

Operatives of the Nigerian Army yesterday arrested 19 persons for electoral offences in Lagos and Ogun States.

They also recovered 111 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from a suspect at Oshodi, 10 cutlasses, an axe, iron rod and objects suspected to be mortals from hoodlums at Olayinka in Ajegunle, Lagos.

Four of the suspects including a soldier who breached the movement restriction order, a man carrying charms and a thug were arrested by operatives of the 9 Brigade at Mushin, Oshodi and Ikeja areas of Lagos State respectively.

It was gathered that the suspect held at Onigbongbo was fighting at a polling unit, while the soldier and a civilian were arrested at Mushin for breaching movement restriction order.

Confirming the arrests, the Commander 9 Brigade Gen. Lagbaja Abiodun told our Correspondent that another suspect was apprehended with charms at a polling unit in Oshodi while trying to cause a fight.

He said: “We made three arrests. One was at Onigbongbo involving a young man who was causing trouble. We arrested a soldier and a civilian around Mushin. The soldier was not on election duty and he was breaching the movement restriction order. Because he was with a civilian, it was believed they had intent to cause trouble.

“Another man was arrested at Oshodi with charms and he was causing a fight. All the suspects are currently in out barrack and would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action,” he said.

At Olayinka in Ajegunle where weapons were recovered, The Nation gathered that thugs had invaded the area in a bid to disrupt election but were confronted by soldiers stationed not far from a polling unit.

While the suspects fled, the soldiers, according to spokesman for 81 Division, Laolu Daudu, a Lieutenant Colonel, apprehended one of them.

Daudu said seven suspects were also arrested at Makinde area of Oshodi for attempting to snatch ballot boxes, three hoodlums held at Ogere in Ogun State and handed over to the police; a military impersonator at Abule Ogun and one false Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official apprehended opposite Redemption camp, Owode.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu on yesterday evening ordered the arrest of party officials and candidates found at ward or local government collation centres in the state.

Muazu who described the election as peaceful, noted that the officials and candidates were violating the Electoral Act by being present at collation centres and their presence could spring violence.

He gave the order while on tour of Ward collation centres in Ikeja Local Government Area (LGA) after observing the presence of some party officials.

The commissioner ordered them out of the centres, directing the Police officers leading security teams to arrest anyone found in 15 minutes.

“Each party is supposed to send a representative to the collation centres. Only the party agents are to be at the collation centres. No candidates who have contested election should be here and no party chieftain.

“Only electoral officers bringing in results and party agents are wanted here. Any candidate or party official found here has contravened the Electoral Act and would be arrested. Arrest them and bring them to my cell. I have food to give them.

“I do not anticipate any post election violence. The whole exercise has been good thus far. We have seen from the polling units and now visited all collation centres in Ikeja Local Government Area and the process is moving smoothly. No problems anywhere.

“Collation has started in the four wards we have visited in Ikeja. We have seen adequate security in those areas and we have not received complaints from any of the officers over the collation exercises.

“I have reports of few arrests made within Lagos but I cannot give you details because I am yet to receive full reports from the Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs).”

  • Lagos, Ogun peaceful, says AIG Shehu

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone Two Lawal Shehu has said Lagos and Ogun States were peaceful and elections going on unhindered.

Shehu gave the assurance during an interview with reporters at the Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Saturday morning.

According to him, voting was currently ongoing in the states devoid of intimidation, harassment and disruption.

AIG Shehu said: “Election had started in ernest and on time. We have put strategies on ground and if you go round, you will see patrols. Police and other agencies are there. We have armed policemen moving from one polling unit to the other to checkmate miscreants who might want to cause trouble.

“We have marine police and and Mobile men patrolling the riverine to ensure that hoodlums do not disrupt election in those areas.

So far so good. We have not had any issues. I have gone round myself and also have been receiving reports from field commanders and Commissioners of Police across the senatorial districts.

“We have received good news. So far, there has been no interruption, no disruption and no intimidation from any quarter.

“Vehicular restriction is being enforced. If you go round, you will not see any vehicle on the road. There is synergy between the police and other security agencies.”

The AIG’s claims however contradicts findings from most polling units at Ikeja where electoral officers are yet to arrive polling units.

Our Correspondent gathered from one of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed for the election that they had to protest at the Registration Area Centres (RACs) following the non payment of their allowances.

“We are just leaving the RACs now for the polling units. We had to protest non payment of our allowances. That is basically what caused the delays. They have paid some now, not all,” said the corps member who hurriedly embarked the bus taking them to their polling units.

Similarly, our Correspondent observed that tricycles, motorcycles and commercial buses were operating around Okota around 7am, while voters already queued at polling units awaiting electoral officers.
