  • 700 benefit from free health care service in Ogun

Over 700 elderly men, women and children in Ikenne, Ogun State, have benefited from free medical services of the Remo Medical Outreach.

The outreach was organized to address common ailments of residents in 33 communities that cut across three local government areas. They are Sagamu, Ikenne and Remo North respectively.

The free health care service which began in Sagamu  weeks ago, started in Ikenne, on Friday where the over 700 beneficiaries had their blood sugar and blood pressure checked by a team of health care experts.

Many were also given drugs for common ailments such as malaria, typhoid fever and infections among others as prescribed by the physicians that had attended to their respective health challenges.

About 3,200 people in some communities and local government areas are expected to benefit from the outreach before it rounds off.

The Coordinator of the Outreach, Prince Femi Akinwunmi told reporters in Ikenne that the scheme was part of his ways of giving back to the society, boost healthy living and complement Ogun State government’s efforts in the area of health care delivery.

The 42 year-old Pharmacist said he was able to embark upon the multi-million naira free health care services with the help of pharmaceutical companies such as Emzor, Fidson, Green Life, Real, Jawa, May and Baker, among others.

According to him, the supportive drug firms shared in his belief that the burden of providing medical care for the people should not be left completely for the government to bear.

“What we are even working at is to have a non-fee-paying pharmacy in all government hospitals across the state where our people who would have registered with such centres can access free drugs when they go to hospital.

“The whole idea is about giving back to the society in our own little way by leveraging on the resources around us both in human and materials terms. We seriously crave the support of private sectors and other well-meaning Nigerians to assist us so that we can do more,” he said.

Although he has an ambition to vie for the position to represent Remo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2019 general election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinwunmi said one does not have to be in position of leadership first in order to help humanity. He added that for any one that has a heart of giving and helping others, being in government may put the person at vantage position to deploy government policy to do more and help larger number of people.

In her short remark during the launch of the free medical outreach at the Akarigbo Palace, Sagamu earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Group, Nigeria, Dr (Mrs) Stella Okoli, praised Prince Akinwunmi for his initiative to promote healthy living among his people.

According to him, indiscriminate dumping of refuse on water channels as well as building on flood planes are the  contributory factors to the devastating flood experienced by residents on Friday evening.
“It is quite  devastating, so many lives have been lost, we are rushing down to Ijaye general hospital because we have a report that about eight bodies have been deposited at the mortuary from different areas.
“We are going to create awareness, appealing to the government, the Ogun State government is trying but still,  many more have to be done, the community has to be sensitised on dumping their refuse.

” And we have to appeal to the town planning authority, there are some houses that are too close to the canals here and that is why we have so many people affected,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Ahmed Iliyasu, told Nation that he was on the field to assess the situation, identify with people and share in the feelings but declined to give casualty figure.

The rain which started around 4:30pm on Friday evening caught Abeokuta residents  unaware, brought in in its trail flood and devastation.
Thousands were also locked down for hours following the massive flood that took over all access roads.
The Assistant Chief Planning Officer, , National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA), Southwest, Babatunde Olowookere , said the agency got information about the flood at about 2am on Saturday, adding that the agency’s official were on ground to assess the situation and how to render assistance.

  • FG to take delivery of N10.7bn rice mill Dec 2019

The Federal Government has said the N10.7 billion integrated rice milling machines procured by the Federal Government will be delivered in December, 2019.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed this Monday at the pact signing with MV Agro Engineers, suppliers of the farm equipment, in Abuja.

Ogbeh explained that the benefiting states would indicate interest as off-takers, make 10 percent down payment and express technical capacity to own and operate a mill.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) in April approved N10.7bn for the establishment of 10 new rice mills in the six geopolitical zones.

The 10 participating states include Kaduna, Anambra, Kogi, Benue, Bayelsa, Niger, and Bauchi. Others are Kebbi, Ogun, Zamfara while the mills are expected to produce 100 tons of rice per day.

The Bank of Agriculture (BoA) is expected to take over the loan repayment in the next 10 years.

“As these people arrive, they will install these mills and the BoA will take over the loans repayment over a period of 10 years,” Ogbeh said.

Asked if the 18 months deadline could be reviewed upward, the minister noted that, “building machines is not cheap. It’s a scientific thing. These people say they may do it faster but we give them 18 months, so there won’t be issues for delays.”

According to him, there are about 16 existing large rice mills from the already procured 100 mills.

The minister added that 16 large machines would mill 100 tons of rice paddy daily while others could mill about 300 tons daily.

“Dangote just brought in 10 milling machines which will produce 1 million tons of rice per annum but there are smaller ones we gave out, about 200 mills of 10 tons and 20 tons per annum operating in villages and small corners equipped with the stoners.

“We are buying smaller mills and giving them out because the smaller mills produce more rice than the big mills added up but they are scattered all over the country. Virtually every state has small rice mills somewhere, Niger, Bayelsa, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Ebonyi, Katsina and Jigawa,” he stated.

He commended the contractors advising them to supply adequate quality spare parts.

In his remarks, the Managing Director, Bank of Agriculture, Kabir Mohammed restated commitment to ensure the project is successful while meeting the delivery targets.

He said the project financing would not be a challenge.

The Managing Director, Jamu Babba Dan’agundi, leader of the delegation commended the federal government for the gesture.

He promised to deliver the machines as scheduled.
