  • ‘Ijebu can aspire but Yewa will rule Ogun in 2019’

The senator representing Lagos West and a frontline governorship aspirant from Ogun West, Olamilekan Adeola, has said every son and daughter of Ogun State is qualified to aspire for governor in any democratic dispensation.

But he urged other zones, particularly Ogun East, to support Ogun West to produce the governor in 2019, to succeed Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Adeola said he believed in what the Ijebu-Remo Governorship Agenda Elders’ Forum did recently when it picked the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, as its consensus candidate.

He said the forum’s position was within the realm of freedom of expression and association.

The senator noted that “equity, balance, fairness and justice” demand that the Ogun West should be supported to produce Amosun’s successor.

Adeola addressed reporters at the weekend in Ilaro, headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Area, during the celebration of Orona Day Cultural Festival.

The senator said the Yewa (Ogun West) would not be confrontational in asking for justice, fairness, equity and consideration for the zone’s quest to produce a successor to Amosun.

He said his people would only appeal to other zones, especially the support of the Ijebu and the Egba, for the “2019 Yewa Governorship agenda”.

Adeola said: “First of all, I believe in freedom of speech and that of association. The governorship of Ogun State is for every son and daughter of the state. It is as a result of the attempt to balance the equation that led to the agitation of Yewa for governorship, after 41 years of creating Ogun State.

“What the Ijebu have done is nothing strange; it is just laying claim to what they believe is their right.

“But we are only using this opportunity to appeal to them that it is only fair, it is only equity and justice that they should allow us, for the first time after over 40 years of our existence as a people under one indivisible entity called Ogun State, to allow Ogun West to produce the governor, at least for once.

“It is not a matter of confrontation; it is a matter of appeal, a matter of understanding. We are calling on the Ijebu to allow a Yewa man to be governor for the first time after these years.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant said he remained a loyal party man and a progressive politician.

The senator described as mere speculation a report that he was shopping for an alternative political platform to actualise his agenda.

He urged stakeholders in Ogun to allow the Yewa to pick the best of their indigenes as the zone’s consensus candidate for the 2019 governorship race.

Adeola said: “I am a progressive from day one I joined politics. I intend to remain as one. So, whosoever is saying I am shopping for another platform, apart from APC, is just speculating.

“As far as I am concerned, I remain a loyal member of APC. As a party man, I want to say that I will respect the rules of the party, provided everything works according to the party’s guidelines. There must be equity, justice and fair play.

“I have only warned that for the first time Yewa is presenting a governor, let the candidate be from the people of Yewa (Ogun West) and not a governor that will be forced on the people.

“This is because it was a standard practice in the past, where other two senatorial districts produced the governors; nobody forced the governors on them. They allowed them to choose whoever became the governor and contested the election. At the end of the day, only the best candidate emerged.

“It is in the same spirit that I am calling on all relevant stakeholders in the state to allow fair play, equity, fairness and justice to reign so that the Yewa can have their best of the best as governor in 2019.” he said.

Addressing the people during the Orona Day Festival, the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of the Yewa, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, expressed the confidence that Amosun’s successor would come from Yewa in 2019.

50 other PDP leaders and members also joined him in defecting to APC

Ajayi who lamented that no Yewa – Awori person has been elected Governor of the state since its creation, 42 Years ago, said it’s reassuring that APC is determined to help the zone break the jinx in 2019.
“My primary aim of getting involved in political process especially in Ogun State is to better the lots of my people. Part of which is getting one of us, a Yewa-Awori man elected the Governor of the State.
“The Party that that has assured us of that is the APC, especially when my former party has demonstrated otherwise.
”It has become not only expedient but  imperative  at this very critical time of our life  as a people to support such a party which will make our 42 year political struggle a reality.
“Since the creation of our dear state, no one from Ogun West has been elected Governor whereas  Ogun East and Central have produced two Governors each at different times. APC has decided to zone the governorship slot to Ogun west, that’s why I am joining the party,” Ajayi said.
He hailed Amosun for his achievements, saying the Governor had redefined governance in Ogun State as well as open support for the actualization of Ogun West 2019 governorship agenda.
”It is glaringly obvious for everyone the success recorded in the state under the administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun. He has redefined governance in our dear state.

In welcoming the new members, the Speaker Adekunbi noted that he was happy that Ajayi, a former student leader, was teaming up with APC to make Ogun West Governor a reality.
Chief of staff to the Governor, described the coming of Raheem Ajayi to APC as a proof that ‘Ogun west is going to the 2019 race with a united house’
  • I will return party to people, if elected- Gbenga Daniel

I will return party to people, if elected- Gbenga Daniel

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairmanship aspirant, Chief Gbenga Daniel, on Friday promised to bring back the party to the people, if elected at the Dec 9 convention.

Daniel spoke with newsmen in Jalingo while on a campaign tour.

He said that alienation of the people by taking away their power to make decisions was responsible for all the party’s woes.

“Our coming here physically to speak with our people one on one is something unique and part of what we are going to do to return this great party back to the people.

“The motto of the PDP is Power to the People, but over the years, it does appear that power has been taken off the grassroot, and that is the cause of our disaster in the last general election.

“ We are going round, restoring hope, talking to our people, sensitising and giving them the real situation that, now, power has come back to them,” the aspirant said.

Daniel expressed optimism that he would win the chairmanship election, having previously contested and won two governorship elections in Ogun State.

“ Most of my friends and colleagues competing were appointed officers; they did not contest and win elections, and I am sure that will be looked at when the time comes.

“But more than anything else, we have a good party with popularity nationwide, and we are ready to correct the mistakes of the past,” the aspirant said.

Daniel had earlier met with the State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Haruna Manu, and other government officials on his arrival.

Mr Basiru Adeniji, the Executive Chairman of the council, disclosed this while receiving members of Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on an oversight visit to the council.

He pleaded with the committee to prevail on the State Government to assist the council by providing refuse trucks to solve the problem.

“The issue of harmonisation of revenue collection by the State Government should be seriously looked into as the local councils are not benefiting from the venture,” he said.

Police arraigns 17 over invasion of party secretariat by faction of Ogun PDP

    Kashamu’s loyalists recapture Secretariat

Police in Ogun State on Tuesday arraigned 17 people at a Magistrate Court sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, over the invasion of the state Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) by a faction of the party.

The 17 suspects were arrested on Monday in different locations in Abeokuta for allegedly taking part in the invasion and forceful occupation of the party Secretariat on IBB Boulevard of the metropolis by the newly elected executive of the PDP led by Sikirullai Ogundele.

They were charged with conducts bordering on breach of peace, contempt of court order and disrespect to the magistrate court via charge number MA/723c/2017 and punishable under section 516, 249(d) and 133(9) criminal code, laws of Ogun State, 2016.

The alleged contempt pertains to an order earlier given by a magistrate court sitting in Abeokuta presided by Magistrate Idowu Olayinka which in his ruling, restrained PDP constituted Panel from holding “Any congress, gathering, public assembly or meeting likely to cause breach of peace in Ogun State or any part of Ogun.”

However, the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the all the charges.

Counsel for the accused persons, Kayode Akinsola and Muyiwa Obanewa made an oral bail application for the accused persons, arguing that the offences preferred against the 17 are bailable.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Olakunle Sonibare, did not oppose the application and Magistrate Idowu Olayinka, granted them bail in the sum of N150, 000 with one sureties each in the like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate must be residents within the magistrate division and must provide three years tax clearance each.

Meanwhile, the lingering crisis within the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) deepened on Tuesday as in less than eight hours after the Sikirullai Ogundele led executive of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dislodged the factional chairman, Engr. Bayo Dayo, and his team from the party’s state Secretariat on IBB Boulevard, Abeokuta, Dayo’s camp fought back and reclaimed the building.

Dayo’s camp which is loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu in a counter – strategy, stormed the facility on Monday evening with armed Policemen drafted from Zone 2, Lagos.

The Publicity Secretary of Bayo Dayo – led factional executive of Ogun PDP, Bolaji Adeniji, told The Nation that they have recovered the building from Ogundele’s camp.

Bolaji described Ogundele and his executive members as dissident group, accused them of invading the party Secretariat and stationing people suspected to be political “thugs” there.

Ogundele and other members of the newly elected executives had stormed the Secretariat by noon on Monday and sacked junior workers and other people found there, triggering confusion as the affected workers caught unaware scampered for safety.

But some hours later, Kashamu loyalists turned the tide against Ogundele and colleagues, went to the Secretariat and evicted their boys keeping vigil at the building.
And addressing journalists yesterday at the embattled Secretariat, Engr. Bayo Dayo, who noted that he escaped undetected when the factional PDP members invaded the facility, said nobody can take over the Secretariat while his tenure as authentic state Chairman remains till 2020.

Bayo alleged that four plasma television sets, three fridges, three computer sets, photocopy machines, standing fans and party documents were carted away from the offices of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and organising secretary by the other faction.

He said the Monday incident was not the first time Ogundele led faction would invade the Secretariat, adding that the said Ogundele is on bail from an Ogun State Magistrate Court following an earlier invasion of the Secretariat in 2016.

The Chairman blamed the National Caretaker Chairman of the party, Ahmed Makarfi of being responsible for the crisis in Ogun PDP and other Southwest states.

Bayo: “Makarfi is taking sides with some people in South West, he’s only adding to the problem of the party, his intention is to wipe out PDP in the South West.

“We can’t blame him because he was a spectator at the Port Harcourt convention, someone just picked him and made him the caretaker Chairman, there’s nothing like caretaker in our constitution.

“He’s only after a personal agenda, because he wants to be President and he has some people he’s working with, I know that the house of lies built by Makarfi and his hirelings will soon collapse, we are more than ready to challenge this illegality up to the highest court in the land.

“Makarfi is a product of rule of law, because he wouldn’t have been where he is if not because of the supreme court judgement, he must also respect the rule of law because this exco is recognised by the law.”
