Ogun hosts first NUJ national summit

Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun will host the first Annual National Summit of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ).

Billed for August 16 and August 18, the summit in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, is the first NUJ national simmit.

It will engage stakeholders in the media on past, present and future challenges of the industry.

Speaking on why he agreed to host the event, Governor Amosun said: “It couldn’t have been otherwise since the history of the media industry actually started here in Abeokuta.”

The governor added that “we, in Ogun State, are known for always setting the pace. Don’t forget that the first newspaper in Nigeria, Iwe Iroyin Fun Awon Ara Egba, was published in Abeokuta in 1859 by the renowned missionary, Henry Townsend.”

He noted that “even the idea of the first television station in Africa was the brainchild of yet another great son of Ogun State, our revered Papa Obafemi Awolowo, the late sage who was premier of the Western Region. He would go on to establish the oldest surviving private newspaper, The Tribune.

“So from whichever angle you want to view it, Ogun State takes the lead in the history of the media profession just as it does in other areas of human endeavour. It is, therefore, befitting we naturally should host the historic first edition of an annual National Media Summit.”

Organised by the national leadership of the NUJ in partnership with Ogun State, the three-day Summit will have former President Olusegun Obasanjo, delivering a keynote address on Media and National Unity on Tuesday.

There will also be remarks from Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos State governor; Ibrahim Dankwambo, Gombe State governor; Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano State governor; Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa State governor; Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto State governor and Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara State governor.

Minister of Interior General Abdulrahman Dambazau, and Alhaji Lai Mohammed, minister of Information, the industry host, among others, will also address the gathering.

  • Bill against land speculators passes second reading in Ogun Assembly

    •Coker Farm settlers lament ordeal

Hundreds of farmer-settlers at the over 50-year-old Coker Farm Settlement (CFS) in Ifo, Ogun State and others will soon enjoy peace as a Bill against land speculators is enjoying prompt attention in the Ogun State House of Assembly (OGHA).

The bill, which has passed through first and second readings, is at the Committee Stage.

Titled:  “A Bill for A Law To Prohibit Forcible Entry and Occupation of a Landed Properties, Violent and Fraudulent Conducts in a Relation To Landed Properties In Ogun State And for Connected Purposes”. It was proposed by Kunle Oluomo (Ifo1).

Information about the bill came to light yesterday following the protest by farmers at the CFS over their harrowing experiences in the hands of “land grabbers” and “sand diggers”.

For years, farmers at the CFS established by the first Premier of Old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, said they have been groaning under what they called routine destruction of their crops and farmlands by “land grabbers” and “sand diggers”.

The farmers claimed they have lost millions of naira worth of cash crops in addition to funds invested in farming.

Narrating their ordeals to reporters at a meeting attended by hundreds of the farmers, their wives and children, the CFS’ Secretary, Adediran Babatunde, called on the government “to save this surviving legacy of their forefathers from total destruction”.

Adediran said the 720 acres at Adegbite and Asani areas of Ifo, which was allocated to 124 farmers, began to witness encroachment during the former Governor Gbenga Daniel administration. He added that the situation got to a peak in 2012 without a respite.

But assuring the farmers, OGHA’s Deputy Speaker, Kunle Oluomo, said the bill when passed will tackle the problems of farmers at the CFS and other land matters.

Oluomo, who spoke yesterday with The Nation, said the bill will stop further encroachment, empower the government to demolish illegal structures interfering with the vision of the settlement and compelled others to ratify their properties.

According to the lawmaker, the bill, when passed into law, would also make it an offence for any person to act or purport to act on behalf of any party to a real property transaction or engage in forceful takeover or sale of a landed property.

  • Ogun Free Health Access Card

SIR: It looked like the ATM card at a distance. I drew closer to some of the pregnant women and officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Health in order to assess it. Indeed, it was like the ATM or National Identity Card. The biometrics of the beneficiaries were captured in the cards. The poor pregnant women at the event caressed them and offered gratitude to the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, for a new lease of life.

From that day, Monday, July 11, when the Araya Scale-up (Community Based Health Insurance Scheme) was launched at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, the card qualifies them to visit any of the designated Health Care Providers in their respective local councils and access free health care without paying a dime.

The free health treatment covers all manner of local endemic diseases that contend with the health of pregnant women, mothers and their children. Ante natal and post-natal services are assured. They will equally not have to worry about payment for diagnostic tests as this is also covered by the scheme.

This is the first of such scheme in the history of Ogun State. With the Ogun Araya Access Card, according to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tunde Ipaye, the pregnant women who belong to the lower 25 per cent of the population, living on less than two dollars a day and their children under the age of five, have access to free health services without any form of payment.

This is not a scheme in the pipeline. Many pregnant women in Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South Local Government Areas are already enjoying the free health facilities, including free drugs.

This social insurance scheme, once again, highlights the welfarist policy of the Amosun-led administration in Ogun State. As the governor often says, we are here because of these people.

From July till the end of the year, over 20,000 pregnant women and their Under-5 children will go to any four designated Health Care Providers (private and public) in their respective local councils with their Araya Access Cards and get free health services anytime, any day, 24/7!

And to underscore his commitment to the free health scheme, the governor has already released in advance funds for this scheme till the end of 2016.

The leadership of the National Health Insurance Scheme and Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, were so impressed by this innovation and practical commitment demonstrated by the state government that they pledged to collaborate with the current administration. And if they make good their promise, as we expect them to do, the 20,000 number should double by the end of 2016.

It should be mentioned that this Community Based Health Insurance Scheme (for pregnant women and Under-5 Children) is a subset of the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme, which will be for the entire residents of the state. Ordinarily, in any insurance scheme, participants ought to pay a premium. But for the peasant pregnant women and their U-5 children, the Amosun administration has offset the premium. Once the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme operates full steam, the entire vulnerable community in the state is guaranteed of free health care services.

We congratulate the governor of Ogun State for adding another feather to his cap. As it is said, a healthy nation is a wealthy nation.

Ogun, NCC settle dispute over 47 shut BTS

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Ogun State government have resolved all outstanding issues that have kept  47 base transmission stations (BTS) under lock and had degraded service quality in the state and its environs.

The Executive Vice Chairman, NCC Prof Umar Danbatta who spoke after a visit to Governor Ibikunle Amosun in Abeokuta,  yesterday said the development would positively impact on the access to telecoms services in the state.

He said: “We have succeeded in resolving a contentious matter leading to sealing of 47 BTS in the state. The BTS are going to be unsealed immediately. This would enhance the challenge we have of providing telecom access in the state.”

Speaking further, Danbatta expressed satisfaction with the assurances given by the governor in tackling the concerns of multiple taxations and right of way, which are among the non-technical factors conspiring to degrade quality of telecoms services in the country.

•Korede: I don’t want to return to my father’s house

Mrs. Amosun said the President’s wife, Aisha Buhari, was also interested in the welfare and speedy rehabilitation of the boy.

“It is reassuring that the boy is doing well despite all what he was subjected to. We were worried that we will see a dejected and withdrawn child, but we are seeing Korede that is active with his mind alert.

“Although, he looked smaller than what a child of his age should be, but he is recuperating very fast. The state government has taken a proactive step to address the issue.

“The mother of the nation has followed the case when it first broke and she is still following it. She (Aisha Buhari) is very passionate about it. She wants to know the boy’s condition and compassionate about the case,” Mrs. Amosun said.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye noted that the government would give the child the best in the areas of medical and social support.

He explained that the boy would still be at the hospital for another week to enable him recuperate fully.

The commissioner said Korede was strong and willing to come out of his health situation.

Head of Department of Paediatric, Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta Dr. Morufat Ogundeyi said the boy was admitted for child abuse and chronic malnutrition.

She added that the boy would be investigated to know if he has any other infection.

Mrs. Ogundeyi said Korede needs special care and rehabilitation to help him develop and interact well with other children.

She added that the child was mentally alert and if given opportunity, he would do well like any normal child of his age.

Commissioner for Justice Dr. Olumide Ayeni said the administration has zero-tolerance for all forms of abuse and would take positive steps to ensure such situation was curbed.

He noted that the case had been taken take over in line with due process, adding that the culprit would be brought to book.

During Amosun’s visit, Taiwo passionately begged her not to allow anybody to return him to his father’s house.

Korede, who spoke in Yoruba from his hospital bed, said he could not trust his torturers not to repeat the same act on him in future, if sent back to live in his father’s house.

He could barely speak due to exhaustion and starvation following weeks of torture by his father and stepmother.

Mrs. Amosun strained her ears to hear him clearly when she visited the boy.

Korede was chained for over a month by his father who is in charge of Key of Joy parish of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ajinwo, Ota area of the state.

The Anti-Human Trafficking unit of the state Police Command handed the boy over to the officials of Ministry Women Affairs and Social Development, Abeokuta, who took him to FMC on Monday.

The accident, which involved a truck and a Mazda bus, caused a gridlock.

In a text message to The Nation, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state Adegoke Adetunji said the accident was caused by “wrong overtaking”.

He said 20 people, including 11 men, seven women and two children, were invoved.

“Report of road traffic crash at Ogunmakin by 1200 hrs (on Sunday) on Lagos-Ibadan route at Fidiwo, Km 72. Vehicles involved are Mazda bus and truck (name unknown).

“Number of people involved 20 adults (11 males, seven females, and two male children. Number of people injured: nine adults (six males and three females while the number  killed are seven adults (four males, two females and a male child).

“The nature of accident is fatal while the cause of accident is wrongful overtaking. The injured victims were taking to OOUTH and the dead were taken to Ipara mortuary.

“Drivers are advised to be patient and avoid overtaking at construction sites, where traffic is diverted,” Adetunji stated.

In the second accident, two women were killed and four others injured on the Wasimi stretch of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State, on Saturday night.

The accident involved a Nissan car, marked Lagos SZ 171 AAA, and an IVECO truck with registered as Ogun SRA 546 XA.

The Nation gathered that the victims were returning to Lagos from Ilaro, headquarters of Yewa South Local Government, after a social engagement.

It was learnt the woman driving the car lost control when the granite-laden truck coming from the rear, hooted to pave the way for its passage on the double carriage-way.

The truck, in a bid to manoeuvre its way, hit the road median and tumbled on the car.

The rescue efforts of the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Suraj  Adekunbi and Assistant Inspector General of Police of Zone 2, Abdulmajid Ali and former Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Abeeb Ajayi, who were passing by, prevented more deaths.

Adekunbi and Ali drafted men of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to the scene.

For hours, hundreds of sympathisers battled to rescue the trapped victims.

But a passing truck, with Lagos State registration EPE 231 XJ was used to pull the truck off the car.

Four injured female occupants were pulled out of the mangled car alive and rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.

The dead were taken to the morgue at Ifo General Hospital.

Adetunji, blamed the accident on over-speeding, urging motorists to always observe traffic regulations and the speed limit to ensure safety.

“My advice to motorists is to obey the speed limit. If they know the weather is not conducive, they shouldn’t be in a hurry, they should obey the speed limit and have consideration for other road users and desist from using Tokunbo tyres.

“I don’t want to link the incident to the weather, but this is a rainy season and the road is always wet; the tyres will not have enough grip on the road like when the road is dry,” Adetunji said.

The representative of Oyo State, Mrs. Folashade Adekunle, giving her commendation on the feeding program said, “We have learnt so many things sir and we going back to our state to implement, we going to see how this thing can fit into our state, we are not saying totally but we will seat down to see how this thing will work in our state.       According to him,  poverty makes everything difficult for human existence, saying everything should be done to alleviate it in all ramifications.

He charged the Federal Government to sustain it’s fight against corruption because it contributes immensely to the level of poverty in the country.

He averred that if the Federal Government succeeds in introducing and sustaining the Home Grown School Feeding the country’s economy is on the way to total recovery.

He stated that if the feeding programme had been introduced a decade ago by successive governments, the horrendous killing and destruction the country is witnessing today in the North-East would not have arisen.

He stated that O’Meal is an all-inclusive programme, which is impacting on all stakeholders in the state.

“Social investment on children is a necessity. This will halt the wave of poverty in the country.

“Corruption is one of the causes of poverty. This is why there is increase in survival tendencies. We must fight, check or attenuate corruption before its corrosive effect ruins the nation.

“If the Federal Government gets this national feeding programme right, we will be back on the right track,” Aregbesola said.

  • ‘We’ll rid Ogun of kidnapping and other crimes’

‘We’ll rid Ogun of kidnapping and other crimes’

The new Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Mr Abdulmajid Ali, in an exclusive interview with The Nation’s Correspondent, Ernest Nwokolo, speaks on security and policing in the state. He also expresses his desire to rid the state of kidnappings, cultism and other crimes, plus his zero tolerance for corruption.

This would be your second coming to Ogun State; tell us about your first coming.?
I was here late 2011 to the middle of 2013. I was here as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration and Finance. Thereafter, I was posted back to Abuja in June 2013.
And now you’re back as a Commissioner. How would you assess policing and security in Ogun State?
If you look back at my first coming, the problem we had was bank robbery almost on a daily basis. There was a serious situation whereby banks closed shops because of the activities of the hoodlums in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta and even Ota axis. I took it upon myself with the cooperation of my Commissioner of Police then, Nicholas Nkemdeme and moved my office to Oke-Ilewo in Abeokuta to put the DPOs on their toes. I constituted convoy patrol and convoy attack. And luckily, it paid off when the DPOs were energized. We were going after the robbers one after the other and we also succeeded in using intelligence gathering to get many of them. So, before I left the state, bank robbery was a thing of the past, even with the assistance of the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. The government brought in Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), which we placed in strategic locations, and that helped a great deal.
What further strategies did you adopt to accomplish that feat?
Effective patrol, information and intelligence gathering. And we were able to get a lot of intelligence about those bad guys and we went after them. We did not allow them to operate before we swooped on them. Most of the time, we burst them while planning their operation because we were able to get reliable informants. Good enough, this paid off; Ogun State became a place that is no longer a safe haven for them. Also, our vehicles and the APCs were strategically positioned, the Highway was made safe and banks in the axis of Ijebu-Ode and its environs began to open for business and businesses began to flourish again.
You have also changed the aesthetics of the command, particularly the headquarters. What informed that?
It has always been my pleasure to bring about improvement wherever I find myself; right from my time in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. In fact, I changed the police station completely and my police station became a model. You could watch CNN in our reception. I put tiles on the floor, right to the cell and even inmates in the cell had opportunity to watch and listen to the television because we put a television set close to the cell. Being in the cell does not mean the inmates are condemned. They are still our citizens and they need information about what is happening around. So, it has been my style. Go and find out what I did in Imo State. I was able to put tiles in the Police Headquarters and also made an in-road into the police barracks to reform it. So, right here (Ogun Command Headquarters), there were problems. The roofs were gone. So, I told myself that I needed to do something about it. I didn’t have to wait for somebody to do it for me or for the Police Authority. And with the support of the strong Public Relations unit I established here before I left, it was easy for us, because people were willing to assist us. We succeeded in changing the roof, changing the face of Commissioner of Police’s Office and I’m happy to be in the office. We are also hoping to do other things.
There have been several successful rescues of kidnap victims in the state, including that of Senator Iyabo Anisulowo. What is the secret?
True we have rescued so many people; and the one you mentioned is just unique because of the personality involved, which made a lot of headlines. We don’t like to blow our trumpets. The command has achieved a lot in the short period under my stewardship. But I see it as just doing our normal job.
The rescue of Chief (Mrs) Iyabode Anisulowo is another policing strategy we have adopted. This time around, we used more of intelligence policing. That is why it works and it involves all security agencies and police commands, not only in Ogun state, but even Oyo, Kwara and Lagos State. We synergise and work in partnership in ensuring that we succeed. And I’m happy that we succeeded.
Kidnappers demand for ransom and quite often, succeed in getting it. How come the police are not able to arrest them at the point of collection?
With the present network set up by the Inspector General of Police (IG), there is no way we will not get them. For example, those involved in the one you mentioned (kidnapping of Anisulowo), we got them arrested and those who kidnapped Chief Olu Falae were arrested too. So, we have a very powerful intelligence network. I need to advise people to always have confidence in the security agencies and allow them to do the work rather than paying ransom.
But you’d agree that people hurry to pay ransoms because they consider their loved ones lives as precious; don’t you think so?
Yes. Look at Chief Anisulowo’s case; she was in the kidnappers den for six days, which was long enough and people usually get so apprehensive about the whole thing. You can negotiate with them (kidnappers) but carry the Police along so that we can burst them.
How is the relationship between the Ogun Police Command and the public?
Very, very superb. I have a very good Public Relations Officer (in DSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi). On the incident of Mama, we got a lot of support from members of the public and the support kept us moving. People were continuously giving us the hope.
How about the welfare of your men and training too?
You know we are under the Federal Government, but the state has been doing its best to see that it keeps us happy. The economy affects everybody but we in the Police will continue to keep the morale of our boys high. And in the areas of training, it is so important that Police should undergo continuous training and acquiring knowledge of the new technology being invented. This will help to keep us abreast of what is happening in other developed world. The IG has made it very important that Police must go on courses and once you go on courses, it will make you a better police person.
How has the command been able to establish a good working relationship with other sister – agencies?
We have a very cordial relationship with our sister security outfits. The Army Commander here used to be a friend when we were young officers. The SSS man and I happened to be friends and we relate very well. Same with the Customs, Immigration, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and others.
The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has made fighting corruption and graft one of its key agenda. How is the command under your stewardship keying into this battle?
I hate to see or hear that men of the Police are collecting bribes here and there. I also hate to hear anything about corruption in the command. We have been talking to our boys, we have lectured them; even the DPOs. I have sent the PRO and Senior Officers to go round and lecture them on the need to shun any acts of corruption and perform their duties professionally and also warned them of the danger because once you are caught, you will be dealt with. I have zero tolerance for corruption.
You look smart always in terms of fitness, neatness and appearance. What’s the secret?
It is all about exercise and sporting activities that I engaged in. Luckily, we also have a good tailoring department that is doing very well about our uniforms, and then also, keeping shape. When you keep shape, the uniform will come out and the agility and smartness will be in you, not when you appear sluggish. I’ve always told my boys to be neat and smart. Neatness is essential. You should be proud of the uniform. You see, I’m so proud of the uniform and when I walk, I walk majestically and one tends to be an inch taller because of the confidence that comes with looking smart and neat. And people will know that you know what you are doing. So, it is part of me. It is already in me. I’m so used to coming out smart and neat. Besides, I have always loved sporting activities and my hobby is table tennis. I started playing table tennis at a tender age and was even captain of my team at a point. When you play table tennis, the whole of your body and mind will be involved and this helps in fitness.
On a final note, what is your advice to Ogun people and residents?
I want to thank them so much from the bottom of my heart for the support that I enjoy in the state. I want them to have confidence in the Nigerian Police. I want them to have confidence in the state command; we can work in partnership and rid our state of kidnapping. Cultism will be a thing of the past if people give information adequately and accurately. I want to assure that I’m here in the state to work.
