The road, which is being rehabilitated by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, was built 20 years ago.

Speaking with reporters after inspecting the road, the Permanent Secretary, Kayode  Ademolake ,said ministry officials would also begin repair of the main entrance at the Sagamu-Benin Road after the completion of the drainage clearing in Ijebu-Ode.

He said his ministry would equally rehabilitate the Ajegunle township road in Sagamu.

“What we are doing on these roads is what I can call permanent restoration; it is not going to be palliative. The materials that are being deposited at these roads are such that cannot be moved by water and you will realise that the drainages are being simultaneously cleared.”

  • ‘As a government official, I swore by Ogun’

‘As a government official, I swore by Ogun’

A few years ago, Omokayode Idowu Esuleke created a mild drama of sort during his swearing-in ceremony along with other public officers and Councillors in Oshogbo, Osun State, when he rejected the Holy Bible and Holy Koran and instead opted to take his oath by swearing by Ogun, the god of Iron, symbolised by a cutlass. He recalled the big stir and amazement that followed, as other political officers, had toed the conventional line of swearing by the two imported Semitic religions. “Even the audience were not left out,” he recalled.

Asked why he chose to be different, the septuagenarian, who is now the Baale Esu of Osogbo said “I believe in the Yoruba gods that are effective, unlike Holy Books that are slow to react, punish or easily forgive. That is why I demanded to swear by Ogun, the god of Iron and was given a cutlass.”

Speaking further, Esuleke said “that is why throughout my tenure in the Council in Osogbo, I did not steal a kobo and my action forced other officers to be honest, hence no money went missing. You can confirm the records.”

    On his nickname, ‘The Boy’

Septuagenarian Esuleke, whose deliberate bushy beard has covered his tribal marks, said he spent 25 years in the civil service and earned the nickname ‘The Boy’ because of his humility and penchant to relate with all irrespective of age. “Anyone looking for his mate should go to the cemetery,” he stated.

    His powerful parents

Esuleke  revealed that his parents were traditional worshipers: “My father was powerful physically and spiritually. He too was the Baale Esuleke, he worshipped Esu and married 23 wives. My mother was the last wife and I am her first and only child. My late father was so powerful that if he sent any of his wives on errands to fetch water and the woman felt reluctant, she would have a miscarriage. They wouldn’t even dare to annoy him, knowing the possible consequences. When they got pregnant, a powerful Juju man was always consulted, who revealed the nature and future of the child. It was this same juju man who told my parents to give me the name Esuleke. So I inherited the Esu worship from my father. He was the (Spiritual head) Baale Esu.”

    Worshipping Esu

Inside his mud-bricks bungalow are burning oil lamps that he claims will never quench. “This is one of the shrines of Esu; we also have that of masquerades, while we have other pots where we prepare our herbs too. I am the Baale of Esu Osogbo. Esu is a powerful god, which only the faithful can worship, because he does not entertain liars and a liar cannot worship him. Worshipping of Esu god is like worshipping other deities; like the babalawos (traditional priests) have Araba as their leader or head worshipper; so also am I the head of those worshipping Esu here. It’s just like having an Imam or pastor. So what stops me from answering to my name and faith?” He asked rhetorically.

Although Esuleke did not go beyond Standard Six and Modern School in his education, he says he has been able to achieve what many university graduates may never achieve. “In 1955, when I was very young, I read the Holy Bible from Genesis to Revelation; I also read the Qur’an. After digesting both books, I told myself that nobody can come from a foreign land and tell me that his religion is better than mine. So I have no regrets being an Esu devotee.”

    His Clients

Esuleke says he receives clients on a daily basis, who come to inquire about their future and seek solutions to their problems. “I find solutions to their problems and that is how helpful the African traditional religion is. I also get invited to give talks and deliver lectures and seminars on the Yoruba culture. I have been to University of Ilorin, University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and other foreign countries to deliver lectures. Different people from kids to the elderly visit me as well as those who are sick and in need of healing. Even Muslims and Christians come here.”

Esuleke said Christians and Muslims come to him under the cover of the night. He said before the advent of orthodox medicine, traditional methods were used in treating snake bites, falls from trees, and even gunshot wounds, and admonished pastors, whom he says deceive their followers. “There is this head of a Church in Osogbo, who used to tell his church members not take medicine when they fall sick, but was seen receiving treatment at a hospital.”

On native priests who have been caught assisting robbers or using human beings for sacrifice, Esuleke said, “Don’t they always end up in terrible death? Is there any religion that asks you to go and steal?”

On why native priests and herbalist always look unkempt, he said “In those days, it used to be a non profit vocation. They did not take it as profession but assistance.”

    On Thunder Balogun

Esuleke who claims he was once a footballer said “I was captain of Araromi All Stars. The legendary Teslim Thunder Balogun was one of my coaches then. We were together in IjebuOde and Olu Onagoruwa was part of us. I could also play Table Tennis very well.”

Asked to confirm the mythical story around Thunder Balogun that his shot once ripped through the tummy of a goalkeeper, Esuleke gave a loud laugh and said “That is not true.”

  • Ogun not owing workers

    Ogun not owing workers

The Ogun State government has said it does not owe civil servants. A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, refuted the report in a national daily (not The Nation).

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a story published yesterday titled: “18 states bankrupt, can’t pay workers’ salary”. The said erroneous report lists Ogun as one of the  states.

“We wish to state that the said publication is not only mischievous but misleading.  We are concerned that a national newspaper would publish such a falsehood without verifying its claims and without regard to the ethics of sound journalism.

“We hereby state without any equivocation that since inception of this administration, Ogun State has not owed its workers.

“We are indeed one of the few states which, despite the dwindling Federal Allocation, have consistently been paying workers’ salary promptly. For the avoidance of doubt, workers in Ogun State have received their May 2015 salary.

“We hope that the newspaper will do the right thing by apologising and by retracting the false publication.”

  • Govt clamps down on erring filling stations in Abuja, Ogun

There seemed to be no end in sight to the lingering nationwide fuel scarcity yesterday.
But the hammer fell on some filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Ogun State, where attendants sold products above the N87 pump price. The stations were shut.
In Abuja, queues of vehicles that kept vigil at filling stations in anticipation of getting fuel in the wee hour, created traffic jams on major streets and highways.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Super Mega Station which dispensed fuel, had two queues stretching beyond five kilometres away from the selling point.  They blocked the service lane of the Kubwa Expressway.
Another NNPC Mega Station, on Olusegun Obasanjo Way, had a queue that crippled traffic on the dual carriage way.
Those who hawk fuel in plastic containers sold 10 litres for between N2, 000 and N2, 200 to desperate motorists.
Others patronised filling stations on the outskirts of the city including Masaka, in Nasarawa State and Kaduna road, where the product was sold for as high as N140 per litre.
Some commuters, who were stranded for hours at bus stops, returned home as commercial vehicles deserted the roads.
In Ogun, the government sealed a privately-run filling station in Olomoore, Abeokuta, the state capital, for selling adulterated fuel.
The state had discovered through its Ministry of Commerce & Industry that the station was selling adulterated product to unsuspecting custormers.
It also clamped down on filling stations selling above the official N87 lump price.
The ministry’s Task Force on Enforcement and Compliance unit stormed the filling station following complaints by a victim who bought adulterated product. The victim alleged that the product damaged the engine of his truck.
The station manager was arrested by the police attached to the task force for further interrogation.
Others stations that were forced to bring the pump price for between N140 and N150 to the approved pump price, reverted to the illegal price  immediately the task force team left.

  • Govt: PDP candidate too ‘stiff’ to develop Ogun

Govt: PDP candidate too ‘stiff’ to develop Ogun

The Ogun State government has said the light rail project was a contractor-finance arrangement, using long term funds, which will open the state’s economy to massive investment and create employments opportunities for the youth.

The government, in a statement by Commissioner for Information and Strategy Yusuph Olaniyonu, described the views expressed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), Gboyega Isiaka, as a reflection of his ignorance and narrow world view about development, even within the country.

“Ogun State, by signing the contract with Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), is joining a network that both the Federal and Lagos Governments are about to create. That is why we are using the same contractor as them. This will save money, time and ensure compatibility.

“We are surprised that Mr. Isiaka did not know about the proposed light rail until last week.  We publicly signed the Memorandum of Understanding in 2013 so that the contractor could prepare the design for us.

“The design was in fact featured prominently in last year’s state calendar and other government publications.

“We advise Isiaka to always check his facts well before rushing to make public statements which are unbecoming of a man aspiring to govern the state.

“His statement describing the rail project as a misplaced priority was only a reflection of his myopic world view which would have kept Ogun State in the past, if the PDP candidate had been elected governor.

“We are a forward-looking, progressive administration. Our plan is to create a modern, agro-based, industrialised and developed state. The light rail project is central to achieving this.

“However, we need to remind Mr. Isiaka that constructing a rail project does not disturb investment in other social services. Our rebuilding mission in all other areas will not be disturbed in any way. That is why last month, we still inaugurated a new block of classrooms in Arepo town, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.

“We believe the time for campaign is over. The people have made their choice. It is good that Mr. Isiaka has gone to the Election Petition Tribunal. We shall meet him in court.

“Our advice to him is that he should allow the judiciary to do their work while he keeps his cool and stop making prejudicial statements,”, the government added.

  • Ogun appoints school administrators

The Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has appointed another set of 10 headteachers, 24 assistant headteahers and one zonal secretary in public schools.

Speaking at the induction ceremony of the new headteachers in Abeokuta, Commission’s Acting Chairman Otunba Timothy Adebowale described the promotion as a call for more dedication and commitment to duties, noting that they are expected to lead by example.

Adebowale urged them to provide quality leadership and be dedicated to their duties to justify their appointment. He called on them to make meaningful contributions to reposition the education sector.

The acting TESCO boss underscored the need for a cordial working relationship, mutual cooperation and respect between the headteachers and their assistants to build a strong structure needed for running the schools.

Permanent Secretary Mrs. Olabisi Akinnnuga advised the inductees to be above board, noting that “headteachers should be worthy of emulation as they are role models in their respective schools”.

Akinnuga reaffirmed that government would continue to reward excellent performance and promote competence among teachers

  • Cooperate with me to build Ogun, says Amosun

Cooperate with me to build Ogun, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has called on his co-contestants in last Saturday’s election to cooperate with him in building the state, describing them as stakeholders in the Ogun project.

In his acceptance speech during a special broadcast,  the governor asked them to join him to build the state.

“We are all winners.  There are no losers. Our unity is our strength. We have to continue to march forward together,” he added.

Amosun reassured the people that his administration would continue with its policy of non-discrimination

‘’The policies, programmes and projects of our administration in the next four years shall continue to be for the benefit of all. Indeed, we shall pursue with more vigour, determination, honesty of purpose and courage, our five cardinal programmes as contained in our Mission to Rebuild Ogun State.

“We shall build on the foundation we earlier laid to make our state one of the most modern and one with the highest standard of living in our country. The focus of our administration will continue to ensure better service delivery. This, I believe, is why you voted for continuity.

“However, for us to continue to achieve development, we need all hands on deck. We invite our people to continue to join this progressive team that will further solidify development, progress, security and peace in our state,” the governor said.

Commending the people for performing their civic responsibility in a peaceful, civilised and orderly manner, Amosun said the elections were the best as no violence was recorded, except for a few malpractices in some areas.

He thanked them for their resilience, determination and perseverance, saying “we have demonstrated that we are truly of Ogun standard.

“You have once again demonstrated why the world has always referred to our state as the “Gateway” to Nigeria’s civilisation.”
