$5m British battery recycling firm for Ogun

British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery, has said $5m battery recycling plant would soon be established in Ogun State.

He spoke yesterday when he led officials of the commission on a visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Montgomery said the firm would create direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians, adding that when operational, it would be the best in Africa.

He said: “My brief visit to this state is about the deal put together for recycling, which is moving out of Lagos State and establishing a new plant here for recycling e-waste.’’

Montgomery said their visit to the state was partly to review the progress being made in Ogun as the industrial hub of the nation and how the state had fared in infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for business to thrive.

Governor Abiodun said the state had a large expanse of land suitable for the cultivation of food and cash crops, adding that large deposits of limestone and other minerals were found in the state.

He says Ogun is home to manufacturing companies and has the biggest industrial park as a result of gas pipelines from the Niger Delta that crisscross the length and breadth of the state.

Abiodun said: “We are open for business. Our administration has made the environment attractive. We have reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks to the barest minimum. We have made land acquisition seamless for investors. We have grown our economy.’’

Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved two days off duty per week for officers on Grade Level 01-14 while officers on Grade Level 15-17 are to maintain one day off duty per week.

A statement by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, said the gesture was aimed at further easing the burden on the teeming workers who now face more significant challenges commuting to work.

According to the Head of Service, the gesture is expected to translate to substantial relief while also enhancing service delivery through a more motivated and energized workforce.

He urged all accounting officers to immediately implement the policy in their respective MDAs by working out modalities to ensure that the day-off system is scheduled in such a way that service delivery is not compromised.

According to Onasanya, Abiodun, in July 2023, introduced the one day off work policy for all grade levels, adding that the current extension to two days off work for GL 01-14 is to further reduce the financial burden on workers and increase productivity.

Ogun will implement new minimum wage, Abiodun assures labour leaders

Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured his administration was working towards implementing the new minimum wage.

Abiodun gave the assurance at a meeting with the leadership of Organised Labour at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, noting that workers have been instrumental in the rapid economic growth the State is witnessing.

He promised the union leaders that Ogun State would not take second place in the implementation of the new minimum wage.

According to him: “On the new minimum wage, all hands are on deck working assiduously, and I am sure that as always, we will not be number two in the implementation of the minimum wage.

“I have told my team that we should roll up our sleeves; we should work as hard as we can without putting undue pressure on our people. We should be creative, more efficient, block loopholes, and increase our revenue so that we can afford to pay the new minimum wage comfortably, and by the grace of God, we will not be second in terms of implementation.”

He pleaded for continued partnership from Organised Labour, emphasising their cooperation has led to economic prosperity as the State budget has increased from less than N400 billion at the inception of the administration to the current N703 billion with a performance of 80 percent.

He added that the State was looking at a trillion Naira budget for next year’s appropriation.

Governor Abiodun said he initiated the meeting as part of efforts to engage stakeholders involved in the movement of people to find solutions to the current situation caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

Abiodun, who took time to explain the intricacies of the oil sector, acknowledged that the current realities are the fallout of the Federal Government’s decision, to reposition the nation’s economy for sustainability, adding that as a responsible government, his administration has put several measures in place to cushion the effects on the people.

Transport unions vow to stop arbitrary fare hike in Ogun

Transport union leaders in Ogun State have promised to collaborate with the state government to minimise hike in fares, following the recent increase in the pump price of petrol.

The promise was the outcome of a meeting between Governor Dapo Abiodun and the union leaders, regarding the need to be humane in fixing fares.

The Chairman of Ogun State Park Management Scheme (OGSPAM), Alhaji Akeem Bodunrin, addressing reporters at Panseke Motor Park in Abeokuta South Local Government, said they would cooperate with Governor Abiodun on his desire to ensure citizens were not burdened by exorbitant fares due to the high cost of fuel.

He said OGSPAM had not increased the cost of union tickets, to make things easy for their members, adding that he was optimistic the cost of fuel would reduce with the emergence of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and e-bikes.

“We came to speak with our drivers and union on how best to be humane in fixing fares, and we have seen that increment in transport fares isn’t much. No one has increased union tickets; the high cost of fuel is still the major issue. However, we promise to cooperate with our governor, Prince Abiodun, in his quest to make life meaningful for the citizens,” Bodunrin said.

The state Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Ismail, implored Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said as a union, they would look after the welfare of their passengers.

Ismail noted that fares would reduce very soon with the expected release of 100 CNG-enabled buses by the state government and another 20 by the Federal Government next week.

He said: “Look at our governor; he has given us Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and e-mobility bikes to help with the high cost of fuel. What determines fares are the distance and fuel consumption. By the time we take delivery of the 100 CNG-enabled buses promised by Governor Abiodun, our reliance on fuel will definitely reduce. We urge our people to be patient with us.”

The state Chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Alhaji Titilayo Akibu, praised Governor Abiodun for his strides in revolutionising transport sector with the introduction of CNG-enabled buses and e-bikes.

He said when the unions take ownership of the CNG buses, fares will reduce.

The National President of Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Alhaji Samsudeen Apelogun, said they would support the vision and mission of Governor Abiodun.

  • Ogun: An emerging power house beyond oil

Ogun: An emerging power house beyond oil

Sir: Ogun State, nestled just outside Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling economic hub, is on the cusp of an extraordinary transformation. The state is poised to become one of Nigeria’s most prosperous and desirable regions, without relying on the traditional revenue sources of oil or mineral wealth. It is charting a new path to prosperity, driven by strategic infrastructure development and innovative revenue collection, particularly from the constant stream of trucks transporting goods between Lagos and Ogun.

Ogun State’s proximity to Lagos has always been one of its most significant advantages. As Lagos continues to grow and expand, the spill-over effect into Ogun is inevitable. Businesses seeking more affordable real estate, less congestion, and easier access to logistics hubs are increasingly setting their sights on Ogun. This influx of commerce and industry is a crucial factor in the state’s rise.

One of the most promising developments in Ogun is its strategic focus on revenue collection from transportation. With a high volume of trucks moving goods daily from Lagos through Ogun, the state has identified a lucrative opportunity. By implementing efficient and fair levies on these vehicles, Ogun can generate significant income. This steady revenue stream, which does not depend on the volatile oil market, provides a stable financial foundation for the state’s ambitious development plans.

The current administration, led by Prince Dapo Abiodun, has made infrastructure development a top priority. Recognizing that robust infrastructure is the bedrock of economic growth, the government is investing heavily in roads, bridges, and other critical projects. These investments are not just about improving transportation; they are about making Ogun State a more attractive destination for businesses and residents alike.

The government’s approach is comprehensive, focusing on urban renewal in key cities like Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Ijebu-Ode, while also addressing the needs of rural areas. Improved road networks, better access to electricity, and enhanced public services are all part of the plan to make Ogun State a model of modern, sustainable development.

As these infrastructure projects come to fruition, Ogun State will likely see an influx of businesses, residents, and investors. The state’s strategic location, coupled with its growing infrastructure, will make it an ideal place for new businesses to flourish. This, in turn, will create jobs, stimulate local economies, and improve the quality of life for Ogun’s residents.

Moreover, the state’s proactive approach to governance, with a focus on transparency and efficiency, will further enhance its appeal. Investors and residents alike are drawn to environments where they can trust the government to manage resources wisely and provide the necessary support for economic activities.

In the next five to seven years, Ogun State is set to become a beacon of prosperity in Nigeria, not because of oil wells or mineral resources, but because of visionary leadership and smart economic strategies. The state’s ability to harness its natural advantages, invest in infrastructure, and generate revenue through innovative means, such as levies from transportation, will set it apart as a model for other regions to follow.

Ogun State is on the rise, and with the current government laying the groundwork for sustained growth, it is only a matter of time before it becomes one of the most prosperous and liveable states in Nigeria. As you watch this transformation unfold, remember this moment and mark these words: Ogun State is the future.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, has announced that the commission will adopt a manual collation process for the upcoming 2024 local government elections in Ogun State. Speaking during an appearance on Eagle 102.5 FM’s current affairs program, Frontline, Mr. Osibodu cited financial constraints as the primary reason for not deploying technological methods for result collation. He noted that such technologies would be “too expensive for the commission to bear.” He however assured the public that the manual process would still be conducted with the highest level of integrity and transparency.

The OGSIEC chairman also addressed the delay of the elections, noting that certain factors beyond the commission’s control had made it challenging to adhere strictly to the timelines set out in Section 27 of the Local Government Law of Ogun State, 2006. This law mandates that local government council elections must be held no earlier than sixty days and no later than thirty days before the expiration of the current council’s term. Mr. Osibodu acknowledged that while these timelines are ideal, practical realities sometimes necessitate adjustments.

  • Transforming Ogun housing landscape through urban regeneration

Transforming Ogun housing landscape through urban regeneration

    By Lekan Adeniran

Established in 1976, Ogun State has experienced changes in urban environment. With the acceleration of urbanisation, the demand for housing has surged, presenting challenges as inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, and social inequality. The conventional housing model, marked by sprawling informal settlements and a lack of planning, has become unsustainable. As a result, urban regeneration has emerged as a critical to redefine this narrative, promoting a more inclusive, equitable, and environmentally sustainable housing framework.

Urban regeneration, championed by the administration of Dapo Abiodun, entails the holistic revitalisation of urban areas through economic, social, and physical enhancements. In Ogun, the expansion of cities, such as Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Ilaro, and Ota underscores the need for innovative housing solutions. The housing stock often fails to accommodate the population, leading to overcrowding and substandard living conditions. Urban regeneration is poised to address these challenges by incorporating sustainable development and contemporary urban planning methodologies.

A fundamental component of urban regeneration is the redevelopment of underused or neglected spaces. In Ogun State, many areas suffer from disrepair, with abandoned structures and vacant lots contributing to urban decay. This administration aims to transform these spaces into vibrant residential communities, thereby creating appealing living environments that cater to a diverse population. This transformation enhances visual appeal and stimulates local economies by attracting businesses and investors.

Recognising this need, Governor Abiodun’s government has targeted Ibara Housing Estate as the initial focus of its regeneration initiative, expected to extend to other regions, maximising available spaces and creating interconnected urban hubs, as articulated by Housing Commissioner, Jagunmolu Akande Omoniyi.

Built in 1976 when Ogun State was carved out of former Western Region, Ibara Housing Estate spans 32 hectares valued at over N20 billion. It originally comprises 232 two-and three-bedroom bungalows, and many of its areas remain undeveloped and existing buildings have deteriorated, detracting from the area’s appeal. The regeneration initiative aims to revitalise this prime location in the Gateway State.

Omoniyi emphasised: “Ibara GRA regeneration project is best understood in the context of our history. Many of us grew up in Abeokuta, and the modest pajawiri houses built in 1976 were designed to accommodate civil servants relocated from Western region. Ibara was chosen for its proximity to the state secretariat at Oke Ilewo, facilitating easy commutes.”

He added: “Today, Ibara GRA is in the heart of our state capital. Although we lack oil or precious minerals, we are blessed with land, which we consider a prime asset in Southwest.”

Historically, notable Government Reserved Areas, such as Bodija in Ibadan and Alagbaka in Akure emerged following formation of Western region. However, among these, Ogun State has lagged in development, preventing the state from fully realising the potential of its landmarks.

In place of the dilapidated structures, modern buildings, comprising detached and semi-detached duplexes are set to rise. Currently, three hectares are undergoing transformation into a thriving urban centre, designated as Cluster 1. This area will feature 35 duplexes, serving as prototypes for the government’s vision, with completion expected by end of the year.

Cluster 11, on Layi Balogun Street, has been subdivided into individual plots, with 60 plots allocated. “This area is designed to include approximately 12 semi-detached units and 47 fully detached units. Each successful applicant will receive a plot and required to begin construction. Those opting for semi-detached duplexes will have designated lines to ensure uniformity. While external appearances must conform, owners can customise their interiors,” Omoniyi noted.

He stressed: “We aim to prevent speculation on these properties, as this undermines the purpose of the initiative. Civil servants were relocated to facilitate this scheme, and it would be unjust for others to profit arbitrarily from it. We are committed to equitable development and aspire to inaugurate the project by this time next year, ensuring property values in the estate are maintained. Our vision is to create estates that rival Banana Island or Parkview, providing a home for citizens returning from Lagos, abroad, or Abuja, eliminating their dependence on hotels during visits,” Omoniyi said.

For Cluster 11, the pricing is N45,000 per square metre, resulting in a 700-square-metre plot priced at N31.5 million, excluding infrastructure costs. Omoniyi highlighted that in the open market, similar plots are valued between N45 million and N50 million.

Despite criticism at undermining its vision, the administration is committed to revolutionising housing. Since 2019, it has delivered 4,000 homes in all locations, including Kemta, Idi Aba in Abeokuta, Kobape, Ilaro, Sagamu, Ijebu Ode, and the ongoing Gateway Aviation Village at Iperu Remo, with 50,000 artisans.

Omoniyi noted existing infrastructure in Ibara GRA but emphasised the need for upgrades: “Drainages and culverts have failed, and many roads are in disrepair. We must address electrification and engage Ogun State Water Corporation to ensure residents don’t rely on boreholes.”

Ogun: The house Daniel and Amosun built

    • By Folorunso Fatai Adisa

Sir: Ogun State has been in the news frequently lately, for both positive and negative reasons, with the negative overshadowing the positive. Chief among these is the China business saga involving Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Ltd., which has become a significant source of embarrassment for both the people of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.

Whether former governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel had good intentions when he entered into the contractual agreement with Zhongfu International Investment is something only he knows. However, the improper government handover, combined with his statements in recent press releases, seems to suggest otherwise.

The British political publicist Ernest Benn once said, “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.”

This observation seems to perfectly encapsulate the actions and decisions of Senator Ibikunle Amosun regarding the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ). The handling of the OGFTZ by his administration reveals several political and administrative shortcomings that have serious implications for governance.

In his press release, Amosun admits that his administration appointed Zhongfu International Investment FXE as the interim zone manager based on what was later discovered to be false information. This hasty decision, made shortly after he assumed office, suggests a lack of thorough vetting and due diligence. Of course, the failure to properly investigate the claims made by Zhongfu has, now, led to a prolonged legal and diplomatic dispute that could have been avoided.

The disruption of business activities in the OGFTZ, as mentioned in the news release, coupled with the international spread of the news about the seizure of Nigeria’s presidential jets due to a failed business deal, significantly damages the state’s reputation as a business-friendly environment and could deter future investments. Otunba Daniel’s response to the situation, in which he claimed he would rather help Nigeria find a diplomatic solution through the president, only adds to the perception of poor leadership. His statement lacks evidence of critical thinking and a commitment to serving the people of Ogun State which further shows the self-interest that often plagues Nigerian politics— everyone wants to be a hero without, actually, exemplifying the traits of characters of one.

For Prince Dapo Abiodun, this is a defining moment. I do not, in any way, envy him. He has inherited a state that has literally turned into the Augean stables by previous administrations. When someone finds themselves in such a messy situation, even if they try to clean it, the stench inevitably rubs off on them.

The Ogun State he seems to have inherited resembles a stable that was expertly locked. As the screws and bolts begin to wear out, the decay starts to show in the form of uncompleted projects, deplorable roads, and bad debts—issues that were concealed until they began to unravel. The challenge before him is enormous, and how he handles it will determine whether he emerges as a hero or is relegated to obscurity.

Abiodun must tackle the current challenges with the same ferocity and resolve. Given the lessons that can be learnt from the mistakes of his predecessors and ensuring that all decisions are based on well-vetted information, he has the opportunity to set a new standard for governance in Ogun State.

It is crucial that this case is resolved amicably to avoid unnecessary strain in our bilateral relationship with such a significant and productive country.

Taken together, the current administration can engage independent auditors or consultants to assess major projects and disputes to prevent a recurrence of such issues. Consequently, national interests can be protected, the people can be served effectively, Ogun State’s reputation can remain intact, and future investments can be secured.

  • Ogun earns N1bn from rice production, determined o feed the nation

Ogun earns N1bn from rice production, determined o feed the nation

Ogun State Government has generated N1billion in revenue within three months in 2024 following the rice revolution embarked on by Governor Dapo Abiodun as it’s poised to feed the nation.

On  Aug 19, the Governor announced a significant milestone in rice production as the State Government harvested the rice planted in May 2024 at Magboro Rice Farm in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.

With an impressive yield of 7 MT per hectare on the 200-hectare pilot project, the state produced approximately 1,400 MT of rice, equivalent to 20,000 bags of milled rice.

This achievement brings in an estimated revenue of ₦1 billion every three months to the state ,directly benefiting the out-growers, including many youth and women who are new to farming.

Following the  success of the first harvesting, the governor is now  scaling up to 2,000 hectares, with plans to expand to 5,000 hectares, projecting ₦10 billion to ₦25 billion in revenue per quarter.

This latest development has brought Ogun State into  the league of rice-producing states in the country

The farm under the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project, supported by the World Bank is the brainchild of governor Abiodun aimed at driving economic growth and development in the state.

Speaking at  the occasion to mark the harvesting o f th rice, Governor Abiodun said that with the flag-off, Ogun State is not only joining states like Lagos, Kebbi, and Bayelsa in producing locally grown rice for the consumption of the people, but also fostering economic development, creating jobs, and improving livelihoods within the communities.

He said: “This is a 200-hectare rice farm. The farmers are mainly women and youths from all parts of the country and not just from Ogun State alone.

“Each farmer was allocated one hectare of farmland; this means that we have 200 farmers in this cluster. This project started in April this year. They began planting in May, and today we are already harvesting, making it a three-month cycle. It means that we can do this three times a year,” he said.

He added: “20,000 bags of milled rice per cycle should be estimated to cost about N1 billion. So, these 200 farmers, made up of women and youths across the country who farm here in just three months, have a revenue of N1 billion. If they do this three times this year, they will earn N3 billion. We have no business being hungry in Nigeria.”
