  • It’ll be long for Nigerian clubs to equal  Enyimba’s  feat in Africa, says Ogunmodede

It’ll be long for Nigerian clubs to equal  Enyimba’s  feat in Africa, says Ogunmodede

Remo Stars’ coach Daniel Ogunmodede has stressed that Nigerian clubs representatives in the CAF inter club competitions would take a while before nearing the successes of Enyimba in the early year 2000.

Enyimba won the CAF Champions League in 2003 and defended the trophy the following year beating Egyptian side, Ismaila SC and Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia in both finals.

Ogunmodede who was asked how far the Sky Blue Stars could go in the CAF Champions League next season following their early exits in the past two seasons, emphasized that the Nigerian league is still in the growth phase and requires enhancements for the clubs in the country to make more meaningful impacts.

He assured that Remo Stars will fiercely defend the club’s honours and Nigeria’s reputation once the continental battle commences next month and that they are working on ensuring that there is no early blip this term.

“Football offers surprises once in a blue moon,” he noted, recalling Aba’s club’s accomplishment two decades ago. “As for the Champions League, we can only give our best shot.

“That’s my honest opinion; unless we want to delude ourselves, the standard of football in our country demands better player quality and improved welfare packages.

“Consider this, the average salary of my player is around N500,000, and you are up against teams paying their players $10,000, $15,000 per month, with signing bonuses reaching $300,000.

“You have clubs like Al Ahly, Zamalek in Egypt, offering such lucrative deals; and then the South African clubs, and others.

“We need an overall improvement in various areas here in Nigeria.

“However, I can assure you that we will go out there and compete; we won’t be mere participants, we will fight to uphold our badge and Nigeria’s honour.”

Remo Stars finished second in the topflight last season for the second straight season and will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League this season.

While appreciating the battle his wards overcame before sealing three points, Ogunmodede noted that they must keep  a low profile and focus on the remaining games of the season.

“It was a difficult game but my players showed what they were capable of doing with the way they staged a comeback and got the massive win,” Ogunmodede said after the game.

“We are not yet at the level and the position we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season. We must remain focussed and not allow anything to distract us. It was a good game and a good win for us but emphasis must be on the next game.”
