Ohanaeze Ndigbo declares every last Saturday of January as Igbo adoration, thanksgiving Day

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has formally declared the last Saturday of every January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day.

The Igbo socio-cultural organisation took the decision at its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday.

In a statement on Wednesday by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Ohaneze Ndigbo President General , Senator Azuta Mbata, said the decision followed an appeal by the Igbo College of Bishops at the NEC meeting.

He said: “This decision followed an appeal by the Igbo College of Bishops, represented at the NEC meeting by Archbishop David Onuoha and Archbishop Sosthenes Eze of the Owerri and Enugu Anglican Provinces respectively, among other clerics.

He said the NEC sought a revision of the earlier resolution adopted by the Imeobi at the Ohanaeze meeting held on 23rd December, 2025 in Enugu, which had proposed the last Sunday of January for the observance.

“Consequently, the NEC resolved that the celebration be held on the last Saturday of every January instead. Imeobi would be communicated in Ohanaeze Ndigbo next meeting.

Senator Mbata, urged Ndigbo at home and in the Diaspora to appreciate the deep significance of this symbolic day, describing it as a moment of collective gratitude to God for His enduring mercies and grace upon the Igbo nation, despite the numerous challenges encountered over the decades.
“Accordingly, all churches in Igbo land are requested to observe with commitment the maiden edition of this solemn event on Saturday, 31st January 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with prayers, adoration, and thanksgiving dedicated to God.”

He called on all Igbo people to participate wholeheartedly in making this day as a unifying spiritual landmark for the Igbo nation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Oyo hosts leadership retreat to boost executive performance

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Oyo State chapter, has commenced a two-day advanced leadership training retreat aimed at equipping its elected members with skills to enhance their performance and effectiveness in office.

The retreat, themed “Effective Leadership vis-à-vis Teamwork,” is being held at the Oxygen Hotel in Moniya, Ibadan.

Notable lecturers at the event include Dr. Jackson Osun of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti; Dr. Femi Olowookere, Head of the Geriatric Centre at the University College Hospital (UCH); Dr. Michael Eze from the Department of Mass Communication, Bowen University, Osun State; and leadership consultant Prince Charles Obasi.

Speaking at the opening of the retreat on May 23, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Oyo State, Comrade Okechukwu Umeh, said the initiative is designed to expose the executives to expert knowledge that promotes strong leadership and teamwork, which will not only strengthen the organization but also contribute positively to national development.

He said: “This is an advanced leadership training for our elected executives. Leadership is very important and having executives from different zones , there is the need to retrain so that we can align for us to understand one another”.

Speaking on the electoral process and voters apathy , Comrade Umeh said it is not wise for people to be coerced to vote.

He said: “People should not be coerced to vote but they should be convinced to vote. People should be carried along not forced. If the government is making the desired impacts and people are feeling the impacts, there will be no need to force anyone to vote. They will participate in the government when they see that thier votes count , but if they feel that thier votes do not count, they will not want to vote and participate.”

On the importance of leadership in nation building, Comrade Umeh said leadership should not be dictatorial.

He urged government to be willing to work with the people.

“Leadership is not meant to be dictatorial from the top and forced on the people down. Take for instance , the local government autonomy is not what it is. Leadership should be felt in all communities, every citizen should feel governance. Leadership is not about you sitting in your mansion and you cannot feel the pain of the people. You barricade yourself from them . When people see that leaders are not concerned about thier welfare, they will leave the government to the leaders. The unrest we are witnessing today can be tackled at the community level. People can easily identify strangers and point criminals out to the security agencies and in that way we are talking about cooperative government that everyone is willing to participate in”.

On his election as the president of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Oyo state, Comrade Umeh said the process of his election and other executives was transparent and based on proven records of his integrity and leadership acumen.

“Everyone who witnessed the election saw that it was transparent. I am from a family of leaders. My grand father and my father were community leaders. They have a track record of honesty and integrity and I cannot fail . I must maintain the good name of my family”.

Bayelsa Govt wades into Ohanaeze Ndigbo election stalemate

    • Suspends rerun election indefinitely

The Bayelsa State Government has announced the indefinite suspension of the rerun election scheduled for Saturday this week to produce a substantive President of the state chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

It also announced the total disbandment of the Electoral Committee that conducted the election on the 23rd of February 2025 that ended in a stalemate, saying the committee fell short of expectations in the performance of its duties.

Speaking yesterday at a meeting with leaders and stakeholders of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state at Government House, Yenagoa, the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, warned those planning to participate in the rerun election to have a change of mind in their own interest.

The Deputy Governor, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, at the weekend, explained that the state government decided to intervene to promote peace and harmony among the Igbos in Bayelsa as well as forestall the breakdown of law and order.

According to Ewhrudjakpo, the government has already given directive to security agencies to arrest and prosecute whoever that violates its directives bordering on the election of the state president of Ohaneze.

He acknowledged the supportive role being played by Igbos in the development of Bayelsa and urged them to continue to live as brothers and sisters and never allow the issue of electing a new leadership to divide them.

Ewhrudjakpo said: “As a government, we appreciate what you have been doing for our state. You are outstanding and that is why we respect you. This is the first time we are meeting again after our second term election. So, let me on behalf of the governor and myself, thank you for supporting us.

“We are not taking your support for granted. That is why for the first time in the history of this state, one of you, an Igbo son, is appointed as commissioner who sits with the governor at the state executive council to make decisions.

“Coming back to the issue that has brought us here, what do the Ohanaeze Ndigbo want? Would you allow the election of your leader to polarize and destroy Ohaneze Ndigbo in Bayelsa? Our answer is No, so for now, the government’s position is that that rerun is suspended indefinitely.

“On Saturday, the security agencies will be deployed round; so, anybody who gathers in the name of doing Ohanaeze election in this state will be a guest to the Police or DSS.

“Government will not impose any candidate on Ohanaeze, but the government will ensure that there is peace and tranquility. We want to see how we can reconcile you people. On that note, we are setting up a reconciliation committee now.”

Ewhrudjakpo, who assured the Igbos that government, would do everything within its reach including adopting the “Doctrine of Necessity” to address the lacunas in their constitution to achieve amicable resolution of the current logjam.

To this end, he constituted a reconciliation committee to look into the issues causing the dispute and come up with recommendations within the next two weeks to enable the government to settle the misunderstanding.

Earlier in their submissions, the two candidates contesting the position of Presidency of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state, which is zoned to Anambra State, Dr. Frank Odinekwe, and Dr. Anthony Olikagwu, appealed to the state government to help the sociopolitical organization resolve its internal conflict.

Responding on behalf of the Reconciliation Committee, the Chairman and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, High Chief Collins Cocodia, expressed gratitude to the Deputy Governor for finding them worthy for the assignment and pledged to work hard to achieve the committee’s purpose.

Amaechi’s reckless remarks against Tinubu, threat to democracy- Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has strongly condemned the incendiary remarks made by the former Governor of Rivers State and former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ohanaeze described Amaechi’s comments, which included calls for “brutal force” to snatch power from Tinubu in 2027, as alarming, divisive and threat to democracy, peace and civility.

In a statement issued by the Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and made available to journalists in Kaduna on Saturday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo distanced itself from Amaechi’s statements.

It emphasized that the Igbo people would never endorse any political conspiracy aimed at undermining the legitimacy of an elected President.

According to the statement, “Amaechi’s outrageous call for Nigerians to resort to ‘brutal force’ in an attempt to snatch power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by 2027 starkly contravenes the principles of civility, democracy, and peace that we hold dear.

“Amaechi’s equally disconcerting assertion that politicians must be willing to ‘steal, maim, and kill’ to retain power not only diminishes the dignity of our political discourse but also poses a dire threat to the very fabric of our society.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the reckless and incendiary comments made by Chibuike Amaechi against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

“It is essential to declare firmly that the Ndigbo will never endorse any political conspiracy aimed at undermining the legitimacy of an elected President.”

Furthermore, Ohanaeze Ndigbo backed the stance of the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, who urged Amaechi to cease inciting the populace.

“We unequivocally lend our support to the position articulated by the Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle.

“We echo his urgent call for Mr. Amaechi to retract his divisive statements and cease from further inciting the populace, lest he face the inevitable repercussions of his actions,” Isiguzoro said.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated its unwavering allegiance to President Tinubu and commitment to fostering peace, stability, and fruitful governance in Nigeria.

“Our resolve is steadfast, as we remain committed to fostering peace, stability, and fruitful governance in Nigeria.

“Let it be said that the aspirations of the Igbo people align with a future predicated upon legitimate leadership, respect for democratic processes, and a shared vision for a prosperous Nigeria,” the statement read.

  • Whose interest is Ohanaeze Ndigbo serving?

Whose interest is Ohanaeze Ndigbo serving?

Sir: Ethnic socio-cultural groups protect the interests of ethnic groups in multifarious ethnic settings. In some instances, the people entrust some privileged individuals with the mandate to protect their interests and serve as their voice in the political scheming in the country.

The case of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a clear departure from what socio- cultural movements should be in agitating for a fair share in a country peopled by diverse ethnic interests. The group is a clear and perfect blend of plutocracy and aristocracy- a dangerous fusion feeding seriously and capitalising on the weakness of the rest of the Igbo nation to negotiate for a fair share in the power and other distributions in the Nigerian polity to feather nest of privileged members and equally line their pockets.

It’s a clear interpretation of John Pepper Clark’s “Casualties”, whereby those sent on emissary missions in a dire situation such as war decided to satisfy their comfort at the expense of hunger- ravaged citizenry at home. What a total show of shame?

Ohanaeze Ndigbo is an apt interpretation of the paradox “divided we stand”. It’s also an obvious demonstration that the actors in the set up can never agree to collapse their selfish interests for the good of the Igbo nation. That is a clear reason why this structure has never for once in its history vehemently and successfully attacked and protested any injustice meted against the Igbo nation.

Elections upon elections, parallel governments, diverse interests; at whose peril? The peril of the Igbo nation. Threats of contesting election outcomes in the law court at whose peril? All at the peril of the Igbo nation. Allegations of astronomical nomination processes and short-changing of candidates in the process at whose peril? At the peril of the Igbo nation!

For me Ohanaeze Ndigbo has outlived its usefulness and it is high time Igbo nation tries the proverbial next door.

Mbata was elected at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly meeting held at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu yesterday.

He takes over from Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, who was appointed to complete the tenure of the late Chief Emmanuel lwuanyanwu from Imo State.

He was elected by consensus in the election that was witnessed by the governors of Enugu, Imo and Anambra states, as well as Senators Chris Ngige, Ben Obi, Victor Umeh and other Igbo dignitaries.

Prince Okey Nwadinobi from Abia State was elected the National Deputy President while Chief Emeka Sibeidu from Anambra State is the new Secretary General of the Igbo group.

Chidera Anieke from Enugu State was elected National Treasurer, Ezechukwu Ezechi from Imo State was elected National Publicity Secretary while Okey Ugwu from Ebonyi State was elected National Legal Adviser.

The position of the Deputy Secretary General goes to Delta State and others.

Speaking on behalf of the new executive, Mbata thanked the outgoing President-General for his leadership style and his ability to hand over and organise elections for the new executive.

While pledging to lead by example, Mbata called on the governors in the states that made up Ohanaeze Worldwide for support and collaboration to move the organisation forward.

In a gesture underscoring his commitment to fostering unity and dialogue among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday congratulated Senator Azuta-Mbata on his election as the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded the smooth leadership transition within Ohanaeze Ndigbo and commended the group’s commitment to continuity.

He urged the newly elected leadership to uphold the values and principles of their predecessors in the pursuit of national unity and progress.

“The President recognises the critical role of socio-cultural organisations in nation-building; hence, his commitment to promoting dialogue among our ethnic nationalities,” the statement read.

President Tinubu further extended his best wishes to Senator Azuta-Mbata as he embarked on what the President described as “an onerous, yet noble and lofty task.”

Also former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, hailed Senator Mbata on his election.

Atiku, the Waziri of Adamawa, also felicitated with other members of the new executive expected to pilot the affairs of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

The former Vice President further commended the peaceful and credible conduct of the election held in Enugu State on Friday.

He acknowledges the exemplary leadership of the South East Governors’ Forum in ensuring a free and fair election coupled with a smooth transition, adding that there are lessons to be learnt from the alliance forged by participants despite their political diversity.

He reechoes the words of Ohanaeze Ndigbo that Mbata’s victory “marks a significant moment for the organisation” and signals “a new era of progress, unity, and development.”

He notes that the Mbata-led executive are no strangers to the divisions that has plagued our nation, and charges them to not only work assiduously at uniting Ndigbo around shared values, but also work in tandem with other similar socio-cultural organisations in enthroning a new regime of unity.

He underscores the imperative of the promotion of tolerance and inter-communal relations to engender peace, a requisite for stability and development.

Atiku says the promotion of unity and peace is inevitable in the fostering of a united front to combat the sorry state of our socio-economic conditions and improve the well-being of Nigerians.

According to Atiku, Mbata’s experience as a lawmaker and administrator, together with the collective exposures of the new executive, put them in good stead to deliver on their mandate.

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, hailed the emergence of a former lawmaker representing Rivers East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Mbata.

Fubara said that the frontline politician’s victory at the poll in Enugu, on Friday, was a testament to his wide acceptance across the aisle as an accomplished Nigerian, whose test of character and integrity was exemplary.

He said that the overwhelming votes of the delegates showed the implicit confidence of members of the socio-cultural organisation in his ability to provide needed leadership to move the Ohanaeze Ndigbo forward at this time.

Fubara extended his best wishes to Senator Mbata, and expressed the hope that he would succeed as he discharged the lofty duties of furthering national cohesion, and fostering friendly cooperation based on mutual trust and respect within the Igbos and among non-Igbos.

He said: “On behalf of the government and the good people of Rivers State, I once again congratulate you and assure you of our readiness to work with you towards maintaining and preserving national unity and cohesion”.

Former Imo State Governor, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, expressed confidence in Mbata, who he described as an accomplished businessman, politician, and statesman who has served his state and Nigeria meritoriously.

“I have no doubt that with his wealth of experience, Senator Azuta-Mbata will position Ndigbo in the challenging politics of the nation,” Ihedioha said in his congratulatory message.

According to him, the new PG possesses the requisite credentials to steer the cause of Ndi Igbo and rightfully position the Igbo race in the challenging politics of our today’s Nigeria.

Ihedioha assured Azuta-Mbata of his support, stating that he will be ready to give the new President General the necessary backing to succeed for the good of Ndigbo.

Azuta-Mbata’s election as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide has been widely welcomed, with President Bola Tinubu also congratulating him on his new role.

Also the South East Senate Caucus has congratulated Senator Azuta Mbata on his emergence as the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide.

The leader of the Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in a statement in Abuja, on Saturday, said Senator Mbata’s victory at the election during the Ohaneze General Assembly in Enugu, marks a milestone in the history of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

The caucus, he said, has firm confidence in Senator Mbata’s pedigree and leadership qualities that are solid enough to steer Ohaneze to achieve the much desired unity and development in Igboland and command the ability to also reach out to similar associations outside Igboland to enhance good relationship for the unity of Nigeria.

“We as a caucus have the confidence that Ohaneze as constituted under the leadership of Sen Mbata would weave the entire Igbo race cohesively together in unity, peace and make Ohaneze a veritable rallying point for Ndigbo wherever they may be.

“Such trajectory we believe would no doubt encourage, instill confidence and reinvigorate the ability of our people to pursue their individual and collective goal to achieve sustainable development for the overall benefit of Igboland and Nigeria.

“The caucus also lauds the delegates at the general assembly and the political leadership particularly the state governors for their unwavering commitment to support the New Ohaneze leadership to succeed,” Abaribe said.

The caucus congratulated the outgoing PG Nze Ozichukwu for leading Ohaneze to hand over the reins of leadership to Senator Mbata in a peaceful election.

The caucus enjoined Ndigbo to give Senator Mbata and his executive full support in carrying out his mandate to restore the dignity and prosperity of Alaigbo.

“In order to complete the tenure of Imo State, the people of Imo State presented Chief Engr. Dr Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu to Imeobi Ohanaeze for the replacement of the Late Obiozor. The motion for the adoption of Nze Ozichukwu was moved by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, Chairman Imo Council of Elders and seconded by Chief Simon Okeke (Ochendo).

Ohanaeze Ndigbo: Fresh intrigues over Iwuanyanwu’s successor

    • Nobody can stop Rivers from producing next President General – Okorie
    • IPOB alleges plot to alter group’s constitution
    • Prophet cautions against conspiracy

There are fresh intrigues over who succeeds the late Ohanaeze Ndigbo president, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

Stakeholders yesterday warned against any attempt at manipulating  the process leading to  the January 2025 election of a new President General of the apex Igbo group.

A chieftain of the organization, Chief Chekwas Okorie, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and  a prominent cleric, Prophet Godfrey Gbujie  said on no account should the next president come from any other state than  Rivers.  They, in separate statements,   emphatically declared   that no individual or group of people can stop the Rivers  from producing the next leader of the group.

Ohanaeze has the principle of rotational presidency in alphabetical order among the member states with Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states having taken their turns in that order. The 2025 election is expected to produce a Rivers State native as president general, but there are insinuations that some forces are trying to truncate that.

Fielding questions from newsmen in Enugu, Okorie, who is a one-time national chairman of the All ProgressiveS Grand Alliance (APGA), insisted that there was no leadership or any crisis at all in Ohanaeze as regards whether Rivers State would produce the next Igbo leader next year.

He said: “We have looked at it, the time that Chief Iwuanyanwu’s tenure would have ended would be January. So, we couldn’t have done anything according to Igbo tradition until he had been buried. Is it between the time that he was buried a few weeks ago and January that we will be struggling for another Imo person to complete his remaining tenure?

“So, we decided not to go into that but to use the period to be able to join our brothers and sisters and our kindreds in Rivers State to produce the next president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. It is their turn. Nobody can tamper with that. If you try it, people like us will rise against it. If you try it, you destroy Igbo unity that we’ve taken so many years to build”.

The leadership of the group also got a caution from the ministerial leader of World Zionist Union in the Southeast, Prophet Godfrey Gbujie, who warned that any plot to stop Rivers from producing the next president of Ohanaeze would spell doom for the unity of the Igbo race.

In a letter addressed to the secretary general of Ohanaeze, Prophet Gbujie noted an ongoing conspiracy against the Igbo in Rivers State ahead of the January election.

“I plead with and pray you to ensure that you separate and distance yourself and the very Ohanaeze which is divinely bestowed and entrusted on your shoulders from ongoing conspiracy to deny our brothers and sisters from Rivers State their “one – in – 28 year chance producing a president general of Ohaneze Ndigbo next year, 2025,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ime-obi caucus of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, will meet in two weeks’ time to deliberate on who completes the tenure of the late President of the group, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who hailed from Imo state.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Awka, the Vice President of Ohanaeze in charge of Southeast, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, debunked the insinuations that the death of Iwuanyanwu has caused crisis in the body.

“There is no form of crisis in Ohanaeze, what the people are seeing as crisis is the creation of social media, Ohanaeze is not relenting in promoting collective interest of Ndigbo”

“Let me start by thanking all Nigerians including various socio-cultural organizations in this country for their support, collaboration and encouragement throughout the preparation and burial of the late Ohaneze Ndigbo President Chief Emmanuel Iwanyanwu.

“We are waiting for the Imo State Chapter of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to elect or appoint a replacement for the Ime-Obi which is the highest decision making body of the socio-cultural group to consider all possible approval for the completion of Imo State.”

IPOB alleges plot to alter group’s constitution

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a stern warning to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, urging the organization to adhere to its constitution regarding election of its leadership in January 2025.

IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, said in a statement yesterday that some individuals within Ohanaeze Ndigbo are secretly working to alter the organization’s constitution, aiming to exclude Igbos from other regions from contesting for the President General position.

IPOB viewed this move as catastrophic adding that Ohanaeze Ndigbo should prioritize uniting Ndigbo worldwide.

“No Igbo person is more important than the other. Ndigbo are one flesh and one blood but balkanized by the Nigerian government in order to divide and conquer us.

“It is the duty of the Imobi Ohanaeze, religious leaders, and first-class Traditional Rulers in Igboland to settle the differences between members or factions of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, not a non-Igbo person or group,” Powerful emphasized.

The organization urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to respect the zoning arrangement in its constitution, which stipulates that the next President General should emerge from Ndigbo in Rivers State.
