Lagos LG Poll: Groups back Lanre Olaide for Ojokoro LCDA chairmanship

As the local government elections in Lagos State are fast approaching, the Coalition of Yoruba Groups for Participatory Democracy in Ojokoro politics has thrown its weight behind Hon. Lanre Aduragbemi Olaide as the chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday, July 12, 2025, elections.

The groups stated this in a statement jointly signed by Comrade Aderinokun John (YK), Comrade Ayodele Ishola (YWC), Comrade Femi Ogunlere (FYCC), and Comrade Simeon Falade (UNYAC) dated Monday, May 5, 2025.

The statement is titled, “Our formal but humble appeal to the reasoning of revered APC leaders in Ojokoro.”

They stated that “It is significant to recollect that with the emergence of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, a Yoruba man as Nigeria President, we advocates of Yoruba nationhood resolved to re-project our ethnic struggle for a rather harmonious socio-political relationship with the APC party of the Southwest region, as a matter of common ancestry that we share.

“This has paved the way for a new dawn of peaceful inclusivity that we currently enjoy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which has continued to manifest in Yoruba-driven programs.

“This particularly makes Ojokoro LCDA, where our group coalition is domiciled, a point of important reference in this letter.”

According to them, “to sustain this cordial relationship for participatory development programs in Ojokoro, we yearn for the election of a local council chairman who will not only turn around the fortunes of our community but also ensure grassroots participation in the process.

“This fundamental quest gave birth to our coalition, aimed at speaking with one voice to solicit the consideration of a suitable Local Council Chairmanship candidate.”

It was added that rising from a pre-media release deliberation on the electoral choice question, “We implore you, Ojokoro APC leaders to consider records and contributions of each aspirants to the community.

“As for our coalition and using these criteria, however, the only Chairmanship aspirant who stands out remains no other person than Hon. Lanre Aduragbemi Olaide.”

The groups noted that natural expectations of Ojokoro people, including the down-trodden, has set a peculiarly high electoral standard for all Chairmanship aspirants that only Hon. Lanre Olaide can meet.

“His pre-chairmanship aspiration journey is characterised by communal sacrifices with lofty undertakings that seem too numerous for some to remember and too remarkable for many to forget.

“So far, he has left in his political trail a philosophy of cordiality and democratic brotherhood, which among other attributes no APC party faithful or Ojokoro electorate can ever ignore.

“In view of the foregoing, we say to Ojokoro APC Leaders and stakeholders:

“Hon. Aduragbemi Olanrewaju Olaide is Not Just Our LCDA Chairmanship Choice, He Remains Our Only Hope.

“This Coalition (Ojokoro chapter) is a non-political umbrella body comprising the following Yoruba groups: Yoruba Koya (YK); Yoruba World Congress (YWC); Federation of Yoruba Consciousness and Culture (FYCC); United Nations of Yoruba Ancestral Consciousness (UNYAC).

In a concerted effort to foster sustainable living conditions in Lagos, the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), in collaboration with the Centre for 21st Century (C21st), has launched strategic initiatives and interventions aimed at creating livable communities, improving the quality of life, and enhancing earning potential.

The event, which saw the participation of community leaders, market leaders, youth and women leaders, business operators, healthcare workers, environmental sanitation workers, youth corps members, and LCDA staff, focused on critical issues such as waste management, carbon emission reduction, clean air initiatives, pollution reduction, proper husbandry, and tree planting.

Addressing the attendees, Hon. Hammed Tijani, the Executive Chairman of Ojokoro LCDA, emphasized the importance of the interactive session in educating the community about the necessity and methods of reducing emissions locally.

He said: “We had to invite community stakeholders to sensitize them on our action plan, ensuring they are aligned with the LCDA’s goals. This enables them to return to their communities and continue spreading awareness on mitigating carbon emissions’ effects on society.”

He further highlighted the positive impact of the large turnout, noting that the attendees would carry the message back to their neighbourhoods, educating their friends and neighbours, thus ensuring that the information reaches the grassroots level.

“The number of participants gives us confidence that there will be a significant positive ripple effect. Those who attended can take the messages home, educate their neighbours and friends, and ensure the information trickles down to the grassroots,” he added.

This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting environmental awareness and sustainable living practices within the Ojokoro LCDA, contributing to the overall well-being of the local communities.

He said: “We had to invite community stakeholders to sensitize them on our action plan, so they are on the same page with the LCDA. This will ensure they can go back home to continue sensitizing their people, so they know the things they need to do to mitigate the effect of carbon emissions on society.

“The number of participants gives us an assurance that there will be a positive ripple effect as we had a huge turn-out. Those who attended can take the messages home, educate their neighbours and friends, and ensure trickle down to the grassroots”.

Tijani stressed that indiscriminate dumping of refuse is not acceptable.

“One campaign we have embarked on is the ‘Environmental Sensitization’. This is where we engage the LCDA’s environmental officers to go round sensitizing the people on proper waste management. After this comes enforcement to ensure that residents fully understand and appreciate the seriousness, we attach to this. However, our major goal is sensitization so the community people can develop a sense of responsibility towards waste disposal”, says Tijani.

On refuse collection, the LCDA Boss reiterated that perceptions were changing. “Not too long ago, there was this perception that we didn’t need to pay for waste disposal. But through continuous advocacy, we at the LCDA are changing that perception. PSP Operators are private companies and if they are not paid, they will not be able to operate and give us optimum service.

“These benefits can be derived from sorting your waste, separating plastics, and putting them into a separate bin for recycling, which can earn money. Another benefit is that using a waste bin for the Private Sector Participants (PSP) to remove, the environment is cleaner, and residents, including children, are less prone to health risks” she said.

Akosa stated that strategies have already been put in place to ensure that the outcomes of the awareness campaign would be implemented.

She added that civil society plays a crucial role in safeguarding against potential infringement, on citizens’ rights and gender disparity as well as protecting public health in pursuits of net zero actions.

She said ‘through strategic collaboration, Civil society groups can provide feedback about the real effect on society on net zero related policies and hold government accountable on actions and inactions that could negatively impact citizens during the transition of climate change.”

  • Ojokoro LCDA to rescue under-aged girls from hotels

The Education Department of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State on Sunday vowed to rescue under-aged girls on menial jobs or prostitution in hotels.

Mrs Abimbola Whenayon, the Head of Department of Education in the LCDA, gave the promise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

She said that officers of the department would begin the rescue and rehabilitation exercise in April.

The officer said many under-aged girls had been lured into menial jobs in hotels or as sex workers by their relatives who brought them to the state under the pretext of better life.

She said that the girls would be reunited with their parents and subsequently enrolled in schools to become better citizens.

She said many under-aged girls were deceived and brought to Lagos by close relatives with the promise that they would be enrolled in schools or work.

“When I was in Surulere Local Government, we rescued some girls, rehabilitated and enrolled them in schools.

“I am new in this LCDA, but by April, after the holiday, I will start going into it fully to rescue the girls who are being exploited.

“We will get a place for them, rehabilitate them, send them to school and even seek partnership with private organisations to train those who are not interested in school

“We will train them in vocational skills that will make them very responsible citizens instead of becoming sex workers or bar girls.

“After a while, we will link up with their parents or family anywhere in the country so that we can reunite them.

“If I get government’s support, It will be a success because when I was in Surulere Local Government, I was supported and we helped a lot of under-aged girls,’’ she said.

Whenayon also reiterated the council’s commitment to educate illiterate adults in the area through the adult literacy programme.

According to her, this is in line with the directive of the Federal Government.

She said that about 80 adult students were currently receiving classes in 25 different centres in the area.

“We are teaching market men and women, commercial bus drivers, meat sellers, pepper sellers and bus conductors on how to read and write.

“The turnout is good as many of them do not know how to spell their names or calculate their money before.

“But through the adult education, many of them now understand basic calculations.

“Many of them have been defrauded by their children or relatives because they missed out of the opportunity to go to school in the past.

“Some of our students in the adult education class are now in the Nigeria Teachers Institute and others will write the General Certificate of Examination (GCE) conducted by WAEC,’’ she said.
