I am the next governor of Ondo, Oke boasts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke, at the weekend reassured supporters of the party he would win the October 20 poll.

According to him, the party would win the election with the majority votes without rigging the poll. He spoke at Akure while addressing crowd of the National PDP Youth Vanguard Ondo State chapter and South West zone.

Oke said his experience as a public office holder and antecedents where of serving the people put him in a better position to win the election.

He said he will surely win because the people of the state know him and his economic blueprint will earn him victory in the next election. According to Oke:”By the grace of God and the support of the good people of Ondo State, I am the next governor of Ondo state.

“The people of Ondo State know me and my running mate. We have a unique economic agenda that is genuinely designed to give Ondo State an economic solution. We must salvage this state together because of the younger generation.

“We are confident that our economic agenda will earn us the mandate of our people.”

The former national legal adviser of the PDP said the youths must support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure votes count in the October election. He said all the politicians must also support any effort that will guarantee free and fair election.

Oke said this becomes necessary because of the desperate plots of the incumbent to rig the election.

The southwest coordinator of the National PDP Youth Vanguard, Comrade Dele Dumiye, said the PDP candidate is a worthy ambassador and his record as the National Legal Adviser of the party is worthy of emulation.

He described Oke as an experienced politician that can add value to the state if elected.

  • I’m for economic rebirth, says Oke

The Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, has said his administration would usher in an economic rebirth of the state, if elected in the October 20 election.

Oke spoke at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure, the state capital, during an interactive forum organised by the chairmen of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo, chapter.

The forum was under the auspices of Intellectual Platform.

The former PDP Legal Adviser said Ondo State needs an economic rebirth.

He said the state should have a deliberate economic agenda that would create opportunities, generate employment and ensure a secured future against likely external financial crisis.

AAUA ASUU Chairman Dr Busuyi Mekusi, and his RUGIPO counterpart, Mr Olabamiji Kumuyi, said members of the academic community need to participate in the process that would bring quality leadership.

Oke: LP planning to rig Ondo poll

The Ondo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olusola Oke, has said the ruling Labour Party (LP) was planning to rig, intimidate and destabilise opposition parties in the October 20 election.

Oke addressed reporters at the party’s secretariat in Abuja after the inauguration of the Ondo State PDP Campaign Committee.

He accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko of perfecting plans to use the Judiciary, the police and other security agencies to harass, arrest and detain prominent members of the opposition parties before the election.

Oke said: “As at today, there is a conspiracy between the Judiciary and the Labour Party (LP) administration in Ondo State, such that without provocation, PDP members are attacked and, before you know it, they would use the Judiciary to detain them indefinitely.

“I am aware today that there is a grand plan by the LP to arrest prominent members of the PDP, detain them and are not to be released until after the election.

“What may be of concern is the attitude of the public to the antics of the incumbent LP government to manipulate the electoral process in Ondo State. As I speak with you, the LP poses greater threat to free and fair election in Ondo State than the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

“…The level of orchestration, antics and strategies for manipulating the electoral process by the LP is unprecedented. It is alarming and it is worrisome.”

The PDP candidate alleged that the LP had tried everything to manipulate the voters’ register which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had compiled.

It expressed doubts on the credibility of the electoral process under the INEC.

Oke added: “There are gangs of hoodlums deployed by the LP at different locations in preparation for the day of the election. As I am talking to you, they are training thugs. And while they are doing that, they are giving the wrong impression to the security agencies that it is the ACN and the PDP that are sponsoring thugs.

“Beyond this, I am also aware that the grand plan of the LP in the areas of their weakness is to ensure that there will be no election in these places. They will ensure that wherever they are weak there will be no election.

“On the other hand, wherever they think they are strong, that is where election will be allowed to hold. They are planning to chase away PDP supporters and maximise their returns. Contrary to the perception of some people, the LP is more of a threat to free and fair election in Ondo State than the ACN.”

Oke urges IGP to focus on Ondo violence

The Ondo State governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Olusola Oke, has urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, to pay more attention to the spate of political violence allegedly sponsored by agents of the ruling Labour Party (LP).

Oke spoke in Akure, the state capital, at a workshop organised by Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs.

He decried the persistent political violence across the state ahead of the October 20 governorship election.

The former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, who was represented by his running mate, Mr Saka Lawal, criticised the Ondo State Police Command for arresting PDP members after alleged attacks by the LP.

Lawal said last week in Owo, some LP loyalists allegedly attacked PDP members during a campaign tour.

He said: “Sincerely, I want the Inspector-General of Police to relocate to the state three weeks to the election, to know those behind political violence in the state.

“Just last week, in Owo, on our campaign tour, some thugs in LP T-shirts and caps stormed our campaign ground and started shooting sporadically into the air. Before we knew what happened, the police had arrested our party leaders, saying they caused the violence.”

Lawal expressed disappointment that the state-owned electronic media refused to air PDP campaign jingles.

He said the stations refused to showcase their programmes for Ondo State residents though the party had fulfilled the necessary requirements.

Lawal said: “I wonder why the Ondo State-owned stations have refused to collect our political jingles. They use our taxes to run the stations, yet we have not enjoyed the stations. This is unfair.”

On whether or not the PDP could trust the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free and fair election, the PDP deputy governorship candidate hailed the commission for publicly releasing the names of voters on the Election Day.

He said: “I must surely commend INEC for its step to publicly release the number of voters in the forthcoming governorship election. The step has given us assurance that they are prepared to conduct free and fair election.”

  • Stakeholders worry over electoral violence in Ondo

Stakeholders worry over electoral violence in Ondo

Political leaders in Ondo State are worried over the spate of violence that has characterised the governorship campaigns in the state.

They want the security agencies to rise to the occasion. Traditional rulers and community leaders have also been suing for peace, urging rival partisan politicians to desist from heating up the state ahead of the October 20 election.

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) leader in Akure, the state capital, Chief Wumi Adegbonmire, attributed the violence to the desperation of the Labour Party (LP) Governor Olusegun Mimiko to remain in office beyond this year. He complained that thugs have been invading the ACN meeting venues to instill fear into the people. The foremost politician warned that the trick would fail because people were seriously pushing for power shift.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, Olusola Oke, a lawyer, has also complained that suspected LP thugs have been disrupting campaigns. But he urged calm, saying that the will of the people will prevail.

The Director of Mimiko Campaign Organisation, Mr. Kola Olabisi, denied the allegations. He said PDP and ACN were giving the dog a bad name to hang it. “LP is a peaceful party. Ondo State was peaceful before some people invaded the state to disturb its peace. Our campaign in the Labour Party is peaceful”, he said.

ACN spokesman Gboyega Adedipe said Olabisi was pretending. He alleged that Governor Mimiko, who is seeking re-election, has been waging war against the opposition. He recalled that violence started on April 20, 2012, when the ACN organized a memorial lecture for former Governor Adebayo Adefarati at Oyemeku Road, Akure. Adedipe said LP members stormed the venue, singing and dancing provocatively to abusive songs against the opposition party.

“As the guests, mostly ACN members, began to arrive, the situation became rowdy as their supporters also stationed themselves outside the hall singing and dancing. The situation, however, turned violent when some invitees to the lecture, including former commissioners and special advisers who served under the late governor were prevented from entering the lecture hall by Labour Party members”, he lamented.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and police took the pre-emptive action by banning political gatherings. But it is always difficult to enforce ban on political activities in a volatile state.

On Saturday, July 28, the convoy of the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, was attacked in Akure by thugs. The party blamed LP for the attack, which was denied by its Publicity Secretary, Kole Odogiyan. The media aide to Akeredolu, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, alleged that hoodlums hauled stones and pebbles at the convoy.

A day before this attack, there was a clash between PDP and LP members at Ode-Irele. According to the PDP Director of Publicity, Mr. Ayodele Fadake, the clash was sparked off by government’s decision to inaugurate a community-based project on the same day that the PDP had obtained a Police permit to hold a rally in the town. “Some LP members planned to defect to the PDP and this sent the ruling party leaders jittery”, he said.

Ajanaku said Mimiko resorted to violence because he has no concrete achievement. “This is a governor who has sought to convince the world that he has performed in all spheres, but the evidence cannot be found”, he said. Olabisi rejected this claim, saying that the governor has done much for the state, adding that people would reward him with votes next month.

Ajanaku said gone were the days when non-performers would continue to be in public office in the Southwest. “Can we perform Mimiko to Fashola in lagos, Adams Oshiohmole in Edo? The handwriting is bold on the wall”, he added.

Election observers warn that violence may discredit the poll in Ondo, if stakeholders fail to avert the scenario. “Politicians should engage the people with their manifesto and plans, instead of resorting to violence during electioneering,” said Tunde Imolehin, an activist, who added: ”Violence is an ill-wind that blows nobody no good.”

Adegbonmire said an atmosphere of peace is critical to peaceful elections. “ACN is ready and we will not be intimidated. we want security agents and INEC to do a thorough job without fear or favour”, he added.

Last month, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, warned thugs to leave the state. He warned the members of the road transport unions, who are always tools in the hands of politicians, to shun violence. “I am coming to supervise the election in Ondo myself. So, the unions should stay away from trouble”, he said.

Resident Electoral Officer Akin Orebiyi, who spoke on phone, also assured the partied of a level playing field. “We will work with security agents to ensure an atmosphere of peace and transquility during the election”, he assured.
