My daughter will never play football – Okocha

Nigerian football icon Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has said his daughter will not embark on a career in professional football.

Speaking with Femi and The Gang on Nigeria Info FM recently, the ex Super Eagles player revealed why his children aren’t playing professional football.

‘My son is focusing on his education for now and will play football at the right time. Meanwhile, my daughter will never play professional football because they aren’t paid well enough’.

Jay Jay also mentioned six football stars of all time he admired which included Germany goalkeeper Oliver Khan, ex Super Eagles defenders Uche Okechukwu, Taribo West, Austin Eguavoen and Brazil’s Ronaldinho.

The late Nigerian striker Rashidi Yekini, who scored Nigeria’s first-ever goal in a World Cup in 1994 also made his list.

Meanwhile, Jay Jay didn’t leave out the Manager who gave him his first chance at the Eintracht Frankfurt, naming Stefanovic as his favorite manager of all time.

Nigeria can be surprise team — Okocha

Ex-international, Austin Okocha, is already looking forward to Nigeria becoming the surprise team of the 2014 FIFA World Cup which got underway in Brazil yesterday.

Speaking on Thursday evening prior to the opening match between Brazil and Croatia as one of the in-house guest analysts on South Africa sports cable station, SuperSport, Okocha said every edition of the tournament since inception had always produced a surprise team.

“This time around, I hope it is going to be Nigeria. It will be good for our football,” said the one-time national team captain.

Dressed in an ash coloured suit with a white shirt and a tie, Okocha made the comment while responding to a question from fellow analyst, Ryan Giggs on the chances of Belgium.

The Belgian side parade young and talented players, and despite not having any World Cup experience, followers of the team believe they can pull the plug off some of the strong teams in Brazil.

It may however be difficult to say the same for Nigeria whose players are not among the higher ranked players as a result of not commanding regular shirts for their respective clubs.

The African champions open their campaign against Iran on June 16 and in their second match face Bosnia& Herzegovinia. Their last group match is against Argentina.

  • Sone Aluko – Okocha, Kanu made me shun England for Nigeria

Sone Aluko – Okocha, Kanu made me shun England for Nigeria

To be out of action for three months could make life quite difficult for a professional footballer but for Nigerian Hull City attacker, Sone Aluko, it is the right time to dig deeper spiritually and get closer to God.

The striker was ruled out for at least three months with a torn Achilles tendon early November.

Aluko, who has declared interest in playing for Nigeria after spells in the England Junior team, went philosophical when sharing his injury moments with Sports & Style.

Reacting to questions on the social media, the younger brother to Eniola Aluko, who plays for the Chelsea female team and England, said God has kept him focused and positive since he cropped the near-fatal injury in the pre-match warm-up ahead.

“You know the injury itself is funny. My boss (Steve Bruce) calls it ‘tragically hard luck.’ We were warming up for the match against Sunderland and l just got this tear out of nowhere and doctor just told me l would be out till January.”

The news, according to the 24 year old who scored a winning screamer in a pulsating 2-3 away match to Newcastle in September, devastated him.

The winning goal was Aluko first premiership goal and gave Hull City their first away win in the season.

He added: “I scored a brilliant goal few weeks to that and Bruce told me l was ready to go then that (injury) happened. It is enough to drive you nut but l will not give in to that kind of frustration and l am really coping well.”

This is not forgetting that Achilles trouble cut short Aluko’s season in January 2012.

So how is he coping well?

“I am a believer and if it had not been for the LORD who was on my side it would have been difficult doing this. I have remained positive day after day and so far it has been god recovery wise! I thank God for giving me a clear head and focused mind.”

Aside from that he said he has indulged himself on the social sites more than before.

“I watch a lot of TV and been catching up with some of those great movies. I tweet a lot too and speaks with my friends now and then. I’ve been watching our games too and that of my big sister, Eniola”.

Eniola, who is two years older than Sone has remained close to his only sibling during his time of trouble.

Sone said she comes visiting when she is not at training or playing for Chelsea. “She has always been there for me. She comes around to see me and we have always been close. She is great and we are good together.”

Sone and Eniola ranks among the few successful football siblings in England. Both have been playing football at the top level, and scoring goals.

Sone recalled that same day he scored against Newcastle, her sister also scored for England against Belarus and they called themselves to congratulate each other. “I had a chat with her on the phone later in the night and said ‘well done’ and told her it was a fantastic goal she’d scored. It is a special day for us.”

Eniola was born in Nigeria, two years before Sone arrived, after their politician father, Daniel Aluko relocated to England.

They were brought up in Birmingham, kicking a ball around together in the family garden before both were signed as youngsters by Birmingham City. Sone did not make the Blues first team but moved first to Aberdeen and then Rangers before signing for Hull at the start of last season, the final four months of which he missed due to an Achilles injury.

After nurturing his entire youth career in England through Aberdeen and the England Junior team, to become one of the most talked about youngsters in the Premiership, why did he shun England Three Lions for Super Eagles of Nigeria?

Aluko answered? “I grew up knowing my sister playing for England and as l progress in my career and knowing how close we are l was tempted to do same. Also knowing that l played for England age-groups against top strikers like Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott, yet won a place up to Under-19 level. It was a very strong age-group. But the first World Cup I remember was 1998, when Nigeria had Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, (Nwankwo) Kanu and a golden generation that naturally my mum and dad supported. At Under-20 I was called up for both countries and I just felt that international-wise you pick the team you feel is closest to your heart. When you pick a club you’re thinking about what’s best for your career, but I just felt more like a Nigerian player and fan. I also watched Okocha and Kanu in the Premiership and they are magical. I am grateful to England for what l have learnt here but my heart is in Nigeria”

So how has it been playing for Nigeria? He said he was impressed with the Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi, who have him the nod a couple of times to play for Eagles. “The people too are warm and I just love the atmosphere. My game under Coach Stephen Keshi was in June 2012 as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier but injury has kept me away since then. If things go my way this season I can still break into the team for Brazil definitely. I hope to return soon and if I maintain my form then I will have a good case for selection.” To keep working hard and hope is all I can do, we are fortunate as Nigerians that we are blessed with top players especially in attacking positions so competition is high,” he added.

Sone is highly optimistic that he would be back soon to full training and full game soon after evaluating his recovery.

“Few weeks ago l was given the clear to walk again unrestricted. I wore a full sets of trainers and started took a few steps of freedom. For 12 minutes l worked freely on the treadmill and coach was happy. I’ve received the okay to go back to light training and in a few days will raise the tempo. I might be back sooner than expected.”

BBC Africa Player of the Year: I want to emulate Okocha -Moses

For along time, no Nigerian player has experienced the kind of good fortunes that Victor Moses has enjoyed since he took that crucial decision to pledge his allegiance to the Super Eagles.

Barely a year after making his full debut for the senior national team, the skillful playmaker, who could also operate from the wings, played a pivotal role as the Eagles won the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa last February.

Few months later, Moses won the Europa League with Chelsea in his very first season with the Stamford Bridge side after moving from another Premier League side, Wigan Atletic.

Just last week, the Nigerian international who cut his footballing teeth at Crystal Place was listed among the five nominees for the prestigious BBC Africa Player of the Year award alongside his close pal, John Mikel Obi.

Speaking for the first time on his nomination for the award, Moses did not hide his excitement on his inclusion in the exclusive list for the award.

“For me, that I was even considered for this prestigious award is a privilege,” the Liverpool star began in an interview with the BBC.

Moses said the thought of following in the footstep of the mercurial Austin Jay Jay Okocha who was a past winner of the award would be awesome if he is eventually crowned as the 2013 BBC Africa Player of the Year.

“When I was growing up, every player wanted to be like Okocha, Didier Drogba and George Weah. These players were not just idolised in the African continent but in the whole world.

“So, to be able to join them as past winners is an achievement I would cherish for the rest of my life,” he said.

Jay-Jay Okocha parts ways with associate

Former captain of the Super Eagles, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, is not in the best of moods at the moment. The dazzling footballer has parted ways with Lagos-based businessman, Friday Nwankwo-Kujah, who before now was widely regarded as Okocha’s Man Friday. Not only was Kujah Okocha’s best friend, the mercurial former midfielder was always willing to lend his ears to him on any issue. In fact, his businesses were said to have been entrusted into the hands of Kujah.

The trust between Okocha and Kujah was so legendary that the former would not argue with the latter or subject him to any scrutiny whenever he proposed any business idea. Hence, the two carried on as business associates for many years.

When the news of misunderstanding between them first broke, not a few people, particularly in the nation’s soccer circle, wondered what could have been responsible for it. Today, communication is said to have irretrievably broken down between the two so much so that they have resorted to litigation to sort out whatever is left of the ties between them.

    • Bilyaminu thrilled with 1st league goal

Savannah Scorpions’ Maurice Cooreman has said Gombe United have discovered a player that would take over from the Ex-Super Eagles’ legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha.

The player, Bilyaminu Aliyu, 15, was one of the two players acquired from non league side, Yarmalight Academy during the mid season transfer.

The widely travelled Belgian tactician told SportingLife that Bilyaminu at his young age possesses raw talent that could only be compared with the former Nigeria international who held football fans and purists spellbound with his deft touches and exceptional skills.

Cooreman gave a glowing tribute of the youngster after he netted his first goal as a professional player in Gombe United’s 2-0 home win over Nasarawa United at the Pantami Stadium on Saturday.

“I don’t know how to start the description of Aliyu. He is so gifted and has exceptional talent that can only be rivalled by Okocha. He is a midfielder with a class. He was one of the players we signed from Yarmalight and he has never disappointed since he joined us here.

“Other young players we bought at the beginning of the second stanza are working hard and are giving their older colleagues a serious fight for the first team positions. No one is assured of a place now because the young players have made the fight for shirts to be intense,” Cooreman explained to SportingLife.

Bilyaminu, in a chat with SportingLife, thanked God for giving him the opportunity to score his first premier league goal and he asserted that he would ensure that he gets more before the season ends.

He also thumbed up the head coach, Cooreman for giving him the opportunity to showcase himself.

The midfielder was discovered by Gombe United during Gombe State FA Cup where he played for Yarmalight.

He netted three goals for his club during the competition and he was a constant thorn in the flesh of the Savannah Scorpions when they met in the final. Gombe United eventually edged them 1-0.

Ogwashi-Uku…a town of giants with ‘gigantic’ problems

Ogwashi-Uku, a town with not less than 27,000 inhabitants, is the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The ancient community was also the headquarters of Aniocha Division in the defunct Bendel and Midwest states.

The town then had administrative jurisdiction over Asaba, Issele-Uku, Ibusa, Akwkwu-Igbo, Onicha-Ugbo and many other communities in the neighbourhood.

Political analysts believe that Ogwashi-Uku has contributed a lot of human resources to the country’s development, both at the federal and state levels.

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Finance, Chief Ralph Uwaechue, former minister and ambassador, and the late Dr Emmanuel Osamor, a former Minister of Police Affairs, hail from the community.

The list appears endless. In the defunct Bendel State, an indigene of Ogwashi-Uku, the late Mr Isaac Okonjo was Secretary to the State Government, while his compatriots, Azuka Obichie, Charles Okolo and John Iwowo, among others, were commissioners.

    Jay Jay

However, some residents of the community, which has also produced famous footballers such as Austin “Jay Jay’’ Okocha and the late Victor Oduah, claim that the town has nothing to show in terms of infrastructural development.

They noted that the community has not been getting regular power supply in the last one year, resulting in excessive use of generators across the town.

Narrating the residents’ ordeal, Chukwudi Nwandu, a primary school teacher, said the Azungwu area of the town, where he was living, had been without electricity for over 11 months.

Corroborating his claims, Jude Ilom, a motorcycle repairer, and Miss Nkem Obianaba, a teacher, said they could not remember the last time they enjoyed power supply.

A cold room operator, Ignatius Okobi, said he and his colleagues in the business had no other option than to venture into other lines of business since it had become extremely difficult for them to operate cold rooms with power generators.

He noted that several enterprises in Ogwashi-Uku, which depended on electricity supply, had been forced to close down because of their inability to cope with high costs of production.

Okobi said the situation had forced many artisans, including welders, air conditioner and refrigerator repairers, tailors, barbers and computer operators, among others, to relocate from the community.

Emmanuel Okafor, the President General of Ogwashi-Uku Development Union, conceded that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) had not been supplying power to the town regularly.

He rejected claims that the community had been without electricity supply for about a year.

“They give us light at times but the problem is that it is not regular; in a month, we may have electricity for about eight days altogether,’’ he said.

Nwakamma Okafor, a retired civil servant, recalled that he once led a 17-member delegation to PHCN’s zonal office in Benin about three months ago to discuss the power supply problems.

He said the PHCN officials admitted that power supply was generally poor around the country, adding that they, nonetheless, pledged that something would be done to improve electricity supply to the community.

Okafor added that the officials assured them that they would work out plans on how to supply electricity to the community at least three days in a week.

He said due to the irregular power supply to the community, he spent about N1, 000 every day on fuel to power the generator in his house.

Emperor Ijenwa, a taxi driver, rejected the notion that the community was experiencing a total power failure, insisting that the electricity supply was just epileptic.

Mrs Esther Okolie, PHCN’s Public Relations Manager in Asaba, who acknowledged the power supply challenges facing residents of Ogwashi-Uku, said irregular electricity supply was a general problem.

She said Ogwashi-Uku area alone needed about 105 megawatts of electricity, while only 22 megawatts were available for distribution among all the customers, including government and public offices.

“The situation is so bad and people are bound to complain; their complaints are genuine but I must appeal to our customers in this area to be patient with us.

“Let us pray that the 33 KVA step-down transformer on Ibusa Road will be completed and operational before the end of this year or early next year,’’ she said.

The residents of Ogwashi-Uku and other towns in the area have been appealing to all the relevant authorities to ensure regular power supply to the neighbourhood.

Analysts urged the Federal Government to carry out pragmatic reforms in the power sector to improve the power supply situation across the country.
