  • Okonjo-Iweala: skilled workforce to drive Vision 20:2020

Nigeria needs skilled workforce to stimulate the economy to achieve the Federal Government’s Vision 20:2020 Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has said.

Speaking in Lagos during a three-day orientation for interns under the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), supporting the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) project, she said such feat would make the country become among the biggest 20 economies in the world by 2020.

Okonjo-Iweala, who was represented by Project Director of GIS, Peter Papka, said the agency was established by the Ministry of Finance as part of the SURE-P, and is expected to prepare young job seekers between 18 and 40 years, for the work environment before they are employed.

Papka said Okonjo-Iweala, would by month-end, hold meetings with International Oil Companies (IOCs), banks, telecoms operators and other leading private sector businesses on how to galvanise the economy through job creation. He said similar meeting would be held with Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), which have capacity to create over 40 per cent of Nigeria’s job requirment.

Aremu O., also from the Finance Ministry, explained that the GIS provides graduates with quality temporary work experience to make them stronger candidates for job openings in the labour market.

Such experience, he said, would also boost their chances of becoming self-employed. “The scheme will improve job placement opportunities for graduates by providing them with the opportunity to acquire professional skills, training, and work experience through a one-year internship placement,” he said.

He said though the exercise is a short-term measure, GIS has high prospects for job creation, improve the welfare of youths and achieve the inclusive growth objective of Federal Government’s transformation agenda.

He said during the period of internship, the Federal Government will be responsible for paying a monthly stipend to the interns while the participating institutions/firms would be expected to provide adequate opportunities for training and mentoring the interns.

He said the GIS is targeting up to 50,000 graduate interns yearly. He said the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is based in the Federal Ministry of Finance and is responsible for administration and management of the GIS.

“The process of selection is not competitive, as the Federal PIU would like to give an opportunity to all private/public firms to take part in this national intervention,” he said. He said the orientation exercise is aimed at preparing hired interns for the working environment and skills acquisition. Such, he said, would also guide partnering firms and interns on the GIS, especially on their roles and responsibilities.

The GIS, which started in 2012 to create opportunity for graduates to be attached to organisations, where they can work for a year and enjoy a monthly stipend of N18,000. Such interns can use the opportunity to gain working experience and enhance their employability. The project has started registration of such firms and over 83,000 beneficiaries have been registered. This is beyond the threshold of 50,000 allotted for the scheme in a year. Deployment of such beneficiaries has commenced,” he said.

GIS Communications Adviser, Mrs. Mary Ikoku, said companies searching for the right employees to fill vacant positions always ask for four or five years experience but many of the graduates do not have such experiences because they never worked before. However, by training these interns, they are able to get the required experience to confidently secure their dream jobs in the market.

She said the GIS, remains a sub-component of SURE-P, targeted at delivering employment opportunities for Nigeria’s teeming unemployed graduates. He said participants must be graduates that have finished their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or obtained their certificate of exemption before they can participate. She regretted that some of Nigeria’s graduates are not employable, but these trainings would sharpen their skills. She said participants must be between 18 and 40 years. She said SURE-P is investing in critical infrastructure, Information Technology, social safety nets, oil and gas among others. She said the over time, refineries can be built through the scheme.

Director, After School Graduate Development (ASGD), Funmi Adeyemi, one of the facilitators, said the interns were being trained to support and add value to the organisations where they work.

She advised the interns to build self- confidence and develop the needed skills that will enable them to secure the right jobs when the opportunities arose.

Over 83,000 beneficiaries have been registered, which is beyond the 50,000 allotted for the scheme in a year. She advised the youth on the need to be efficient, competent and team players as such skills will enable them to fit into the organisations where they work.

  • How we kidnapped Okonjo-Iweala’s mum, by suspects

How we kidnapped Okonjo-Iweala’s mum, by suspects

How was Queen Kamene Okonjo, mother of Minister of Finance Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, kidnapped from her palace on December 9, last year?

Startling details of her kidnap were given yesterday in Lagos by her abductors, who were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The suspects were paraded at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, by Police Commissioner Umar Manko.

They said they lied to the queen that President Goodluck Jonathan sent them to arrest her and bring her to Abuja because her daughter embezzled billions of naira which she must pay for.

They are Chiejina Victor Onochie, 32, from Ogbeofuu Village in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State; Oko Chukwuma aka Chuks, 32, from Isele Mkpitima in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State; the gang leader, Ogbuem Jideofor aka Marvelous, 22, from Ezi in Aniocha Local Government Area of Delta State; Michael Ojeabulu, 23, from Esan, Edo State; Buhari Amajoda, 27, Hassan Oseni, 29, and Ibrahim Abubakar, 28, all from Adamawa State and Endurance Oke, 22, from Edhere Aviraha Village in Delta State.

They said they were 13 that carried out the operation. One is dead, The Nation learnt; four are at large. They include one popularly known as Buba.

The queen, according to Jideofor, asked them what offence her daughter committed because it was the same president that invited her the minister from London to help manage the country’s economy.

Despite her enquiry, he said, they bundled her into their vehicle and zoomed off.

Jideofor said they fed her with fried rice, bread, gala, 5-Alive juice drink, adding that they initially demanded a N200 million, ransom, but her son, Onyema, later dropped N13 million along a bypass.

He said two persons came in a vehicle to drop the money and left before they went there to pick it.

Jideofor said: “When we went to kidnap Okonjo-Iweala’s mother in the palace, we were eight – Peter, Buba, Mohammed, Olopa, Idowu, Idowu’s driver and Ifeanyi and I. Four of us carried guns; I carried AK47 rifle. It was a smooth job.”

On how they shared the ransom, he said: “Victor got N700,000 as an insider who brought the job; Chuks, N500,000; Ifeanyi, N1 million; Mike, N400,000; Peter, N2 million; the late Idowu who was shot dead by the police in Benin, N2 million; Mohammed, N2 million; I got N2 million, Olopa, N1 million; another Buba, N300,000; Chiboy, N250,000; our armourer, Ibrahim, N50,000, and Endurance, N250,000.

Onochie, who said he was a security guard at the Delta State Polytechnic, and a relation of Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, added: “Chuks lured me into kidnapping through my girl friend, Joy, who was doing her Industrial Attachment (IT) at Adanson Hotel, Ogwashi-Uku. He told me that one job brought him to Ogwashi-Uku and I asked him for the type of job. He said he wanted to carry somebody and he asked about my auntie, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Mrs Edna Mojekwu. I replied him that I had spent five years as security man in the institution and that the woman was merely managing herself. I said it would be better for us to look for another victim. I then suggested the mother of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. We then started thinking on how to carry the woman.”

Chuks, he said, then asked him how they would accomplish the ploy and he suggested that they presented their NYSC certificates to Mama Okonjo-Iweala, giving the impression that they wanted the ex-minister to get them jobs.

He said an argument ensued when they initially planned to go to the palace, leading to the postponement of the operation. Two weeks later, on Sunday morning, they stormed the palace in two cars.

“I carried Chuks on motorcycle to Azagba-Ogwashi-Uku Road and Chuks came down close to African House. After discussing with them, Chuks entered my motorcycle and we went back through School Road to Azagba. Jideofor and his men then went for the job at Obi’s palace while I went back to my house. I and Chuks later went back to Ogbeofuu, but before reaching there they had carried the woman,” said Onochie.

“That day,” he added: “Mama came down to give drinks to workers renovating the palace. When they entered and climbed up, they did not see her, but were told that she was downstairs, unknown to the workers that they were kidnappers. They told the woman that they belonged to the Special Force from the Presidency; that they were there to arrest her because of the money her daughter, Ngozi embezzled. They did not give me a dime after the operation.”

Ojeabulu, a Higher National Diploma (HND) student of Agriculture, said: “My role was to take care of victim in the bush. Jideofor would bring food every day. Mama Okonjo-Iweala was kept in a bush in Kwale, just 30-minute drive from the palace and Delta police did not know.”

Endurance, who said he was the gang’s driver carrying victims in their operational car, added: “I studied accountancy in Delta State University. My first work was to carry a woman to Nkuzu Village in Iseluku area of Delta State. My second job was Okonjo-Iweala’s mother. They gave me N250,000.”

On how they got rifles for their operations, Jideofor said, it was Buba who bought them from the Onitsha main market at N400,000 each. The seller, he said, sold cotton as a cover-up and would not sell weapons to unknown customers.

Those still at large, Buba said, included Peter, who allegedly killed their last victim, simply identified as Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty, before they were arrested by the SARS operatives alongside Olopa, now in prison custody. Buba’s driver, and Idowu, who they said, was killed by policemen during a cross-fire in their den in Benin, Edo State.

Narrating how they carried out the two operations tagged, “National Assignment,” in which they killed Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty, the mother of Dankwa, a popular businessman, Jideofor said: “I am a businessman based in Port Harcourt; I used to buy goods from Mandilas, Lagos. I have led kidnap operations five times.”

“The first victim, a woman at Asaba, was brought by one boy and we got N7 million. The second, a man, was brought by Buhari in the same Asaba and we got N6.4 million. The third was brought by Chuks, also in Asaba. The victim was Chuks’ uncle and we got N3.2 million. The fourth was Okonjo-Iweala’s mother and we got N13 million. The deal was brought by Chuks, Ifeanyi and Victor. The fifth one is the one Peter killed – Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty – claiming that he did it to revenge his brother’s killing by the police.”

Jideofor told The Nation that he was introduced into kidnapping by a friend called Kalous in Asaba, adding that Kalous was spending money like a cocaine baron before he revealed the source of his wealth to him. He said he had only one car, adding that he invested all his money in boutique business.

He said: “On the other operation in which Mrs Regina Obi-Dainty was killed, I brought the job because her son, Mr. Dankwa is my brother, but he was very stingy with money.”

Chukwuma, said: “I graduated from Ambrose Ali University in 2007. I studied Accountancy and I did my Youth Service at Idah, Kogi State in 2008/2009. I later went back to my village to search for job. When I could not secure job, I went to Lagos to meet my sister, Mrs Ijeoma Iwegbu. One day, I went home – Ogwashi-Uku – to see my girl-friend, Uju. There I met Victor Chiejina.

“As we were chatting and drinking, Victor said he had one kidnap job but did not want to involve local people from the village. I then told him that I knew one Ifeanyi (now in prison for being in possession of Indian hemp). Ifeanyi said he would contact Jideofor. They did not want me to participate. They only told me that they had carried the Mama Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. I was not given a kobo after the job.

“They collected N2 million from the late Mrs. Regina Obi-Dainty’s son and did not give me a kobo. I did not know that they shot the woman dead. I told them to pay into my sister’s bank account. When she went to withdraw the N300,000, she was arrested and they used her to track me down. They arrested me when I went to collect the money my sister withdrew from bank, not knowing that she was with SARS men.”

Buhari, who claimed to be a security man in Asaba, said he got N250,000, while Hassan said he only got N30,000.

Manko said yesterday: “Sequel to the arrest of one Chiejina Onochie and Chukwuma Okoh on March 27, at about 100hours by men of the Special Investigations Bureau (SIB), Lagos State Police Command, and their subsequent confessions that they gave the information that led to the kidnap of the mother of the present Minister of Finance, Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Delta State among many other kidnappings, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, CP Umar Abubakar Manko, directed O/C SARS Ikeja, SP Abba Kyari to go after the kidnappers, especially Jideofor, the gang leader.

“On the strength of this, O/C SARS expanded his tracking network and deployed three SARS Decoy Teams to Delta, Edo and Rivers states which eventually led to the arrest of one Jideofor Ogbue aka Marvelous, the gang leader of the deadly kidnappers, at his hideout in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on April 2. Also five more members of his gang were arrested viz: Michael Ojeabulu, Endurance Oke, Ibrahim Abubakar, Buhari Hamadora and Hassan Oseni at different locations in Edo, Enugu, Delta and Anambra states.

“They confessed to the kidnapping of the mother of Nigerian Finance Minister and collected N13 million ransom and many other kidnappings, including the most recent, where the victim, an elderly woman, Mrs. Regina Obi-Dainty, was killed by the kidnappers after collecting N2 million ransom. Jideofor was arrested in Port Harcourt after he had perfected plans to proceed to Awka, Anambra State.”

Manko added: “There is no hiding place for any criminal in Lagos no matter where he runs to.”

  • Jonathan to send proposal on budget amendment to NASS – Okonjo-Iweala

Jonathan to send proposal on budget amendment to NASS – Okonjo-Iweala

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday said that President Goodluck Jonathan would soon send a proposal to amend the 2013 budget to the National Assembly.

Okonjo Iweala, who is also the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, disclosed this while speaking at a press briefing on the breakdown of the 2013 budget in Abuja.

She said the 2013 budget had three major challenges.

“At the beginning of the year, when we reviewed the National Assembly’s version, there were several challenges which had to be revisited.

“ There were three main challenging areas, namely reductions in the wage bill, major capital expenditures which had been re-allocated and reallocations of the budget,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the minister as saying at the briefing.

She said that this led to the late passage of the appropriation bill by President Jonathan, adding that the president led in the discussions between the Executive and the Legislature.

“We took the time to look at the budget. If you remember last year, there were many issues on implementation of budget.

“We wanted to make sure that whatever the budget we get out in 2013, will be able to implement,’’ she said

On the zero allocation to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), she said that the National Assembly was still looking into it.

“You mentioned some clauses and the SEC budget; it will not prevent us from moving on. It will not stop us from implementing the budget.

“This is a budget of a country and we will not allow one issue to derail it, we have been having discussions on that and we will continue,’’ she said.

She said that part of the amendment that would be sent to National Assembly included some salaries that were moved around, composition of projects and the SURE-P.

    Reps, Okonjo-Iweala clash over SURE-P

Members of the House of Representatives and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday traded words over the operations and application of funds of the Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P).

The minister, annoyed by the accusations made by the Special Joint Committee on the Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P), replied in an angry tone.

Speaking during the public hearing by the Dakuku Peterside-headed Special Joint Committee on SURE-P at the National Assembly, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala told the lawmakers that they were disrespectful to the office of President Goodluck Jonathan by their allegations, insinuations and outright distrust of the information provided on SURE-P.

She said the lawmakers were narrow-minded and that they needed to have a change of attitude and become objective in their approach to the SURE-P issue.

Among other things, the lawmakers accused the executive of using the SURE-P programme as a re-election machinery for President Jonathan, saying some people have been going around the states telling people it’s a PDP programme. They also accused the Presidency of lack of information on the programme, duplication of projects and profligacy on the part of the SURE-P committee members for spending N500 million on themselves within a year. According to the lawmakers, “all sorts of things are going on under the SURE-P programme.”

A member asked: “Is this true that the programme is designed as a mechanism for young men and women to work for the re-election of President Jonathan in 2015? And that the SURE- P state coordinators are members of Jonathan’s team for 2015?”

But the Minister of Finance replied: “I think you have to give respect and dignity to the Federal Government. We need to look at this objectively. The programme is not a programme of any individual, it is the programme of the Federal government led by Mr. President, who is very clear and want to show Nigerians the dividends of the SURE-P programme.

FG targets 65% reduction in recurrent expenditure – Okonjo-Iweala

The Federal Government on Monday said that it planned to reduce the recurrent expenditure by 65 per cent in 2015 to boost economic growth.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who disclosed this at the Renaissance Capital Fourth Annual Pan-Africa Investor Conference in Lagos, said the capital expenditure would also go down by 40 per cent.

Okonjo-Iweala said that the gains from the reduction would be redirected at critical areas of the economy to ensure economic growth and reduction in unemployment rate.

“We are correcting our past fiscal lapses to achieve the desired result and we will continue to slide down on recurrent expenditure.

“The major challenge of the government is the rising unemployment rate currently at 23 per cent and all economic reforms are geared toward job creation,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the minister as saying at the forum.

Okonjo-Iweala, who is also the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, said the government would reduce domestic debt in 2013 with the issuance of N100 billion redeemable bonds.

According to her, the economy has been growing at an average of seven per cent in the past decade in spite of the challenges.

She said that plans were on to establish a development finance institution to provide long-term finance for businesses and strengthen economic growth.

The minister commended Renaissance Capital for its confidence in Nigeria and Africa, adding that the company had brought in a lot of investors.

Parceled explosive for Okonjo- Iweala defused

Two alleged Improvised Explosive Devices (IEAs) were Monday defused by  the police anti-bomb squad. They were planted directly in front of the post office in Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

The parcel was wrapped and addressed to the Minister of Finance.

The Post Master General, (PMG) of the Federation, Mr. Ibrahim Mori- Baba, said the parcel was planted last Friday by a man he described as insane. He said he could not confirm if it was a bomb or otherwise.

He said the security operative told reporters that they would do their job and determine if what exploded was a bomb.

    Mori – Baba said:

“What happened was that on Friday, somebody just came, we couldn’t understand whether that person is a sane person or not

“He wanted to go to the post office but unfortunately for him, the gate was closed and he couldn’t have access to our building and he left the so called parcel by the main gate. I call it so called parcel because, any parcel that could got through the process, there are processes that have to be done and these include weighing of the parcel and then determine how much the sender will pay.

“We will also examine the parcel in the sender’s presence. We will bring out the content to see what you are about to send. In this case, this person left the parcel there and went inside and bought stamps and pasted it on it to indicate as if the thing went through our process.

“ I want to say that it didn’t go through our process, the man just wanted to camouflage to say that he has already posted it therefore we needed to deliver it. That parcel was not processed. The police came and they were able to examine it. Eventually they found something suspicious and it was a bomb,” the post master general said.

  • 2011 polls: Obasanjo wanted Buhari, Okonjo-Iweala ticket –El-Rufai

2011 polls: Obasanjo wanted Buhari, Okonjo-Iweala ticket –El-Rufai

Feared Jonathan won’t be competent president

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el- Rufai, has alleged a plot by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop President Goodluck Jonathan from winning the 2011 election.

The alleged plot, according to El-Rufai in his memoirs The Accidental Public Servant, was based on the ex-President’s perception of Jonathan as a weak leader.

El-Rufai calls the scheme an “interesting move” to stop Jonathan.

Obasanjo’s preference, he says, was a joint ticket of General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Okonjo-Iweala also served in the Obasanjo government in the same capacity.

The book, which is due for public presentation this week in Abuja, has become a hot cake.

But for security reasons, its pre-launch circulation has been restricted to a select few.

The ex-Minister, who enjoyed the confidence of the former President and was one of his trusted aides, said of the alleged plot: “The period between 15th January and the deadline for submission of nominations by political parties to INEC had its own version of intrigues. Pastor Bakare had not immediately accepted the offer to be running mate, but the media was awash with speculations that Buhari had chosen him.

“On 25th January, I was summoned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to his hotel room at the Hilton for reasons he said were both urgent and important. On arrival, I exchanged pleasantries with Steven Oronsaye and Akin Osuntokun in the living room and we went straight into his bedroom.

“After greetings, Obasanjo asked if I was still in touch with Buhari. I replied that I was not directly but could reach him anytime I wished. He then asked that I resumed my role of emissary between the two of them and wished to know quickly if I could reach Buhari with a message. I responded that I could do so pretty quickly.

“Obasanjo then said that he concurred with my earlier belief that Jonathan would not make a competent President and that the best presidential candidate of the whole lot was Buhari.

“He expressed willingness to support Buhari and go public with it if CPC and Buhari are willing to consider his suggestions and implement them.

“Obasanjo suggested that I should convince Buhari to pick Ngozi as his running mate, enter immediately into an alliance with the ACN and ANPP, and then offer the Senate President’s position to the South-West to secure Tinubu’s support.”

The former Minister said Obasanjo offered to source for four wealthy Nigerians who could finance Buhari and CPC’s campaign.

El-Rufai added: “If Buhari agreed to these proposals, Obasanjo undertook to get three or four unnamed wealthy people to help with funding the CPC campaign, and Obasanjo would try bringing Labour Party to endorse the Buhari-Ngozi ticket.

“Obasanjo promised to resign from the chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of the PDP and announce his support for the ticket if it would be helpful. I took notes on the hotel notepaper and left, promising to report back the next day.

“It was fortuitous that both Buhari and Pastor Bakare were in Abuja, so along with Pastor Bakare we met Buhari and delivered Obasanjo’s message.

“Bakare, who until then was a reluctant running mate, saw the Obasanjo offer as good for CPC and Buhari and hoped it would free him from the burden that Buhari had imposed on him.

“He added that since Buhari had not yet officially announced his name as running mate, he would be happy to step aside for Ngozi. I was simply an emissary so I was silent, hoping that Buhari would accept so I would be free of my commitment to be at Bakare’s side!

“Buhari smiled and asked for my opinion as someone that knew Obasanjo pretty well. I told both of them that I thought Obasanjo was being honest in his recommendations as I would urge Buhari to take similar steps of merger with other parties and so on

“I doubted if Obasanjo would deliver on the monies promised and the resignation from the PDP Board of Trustees and did not even think the latter would help the CPC and GMB in anyway.

“I also added that Obasanjo’s faction of Ogun PDP had just lost all their tickets to contest the next elections and should this situation change, Obasanjo would renege on everything he had committed to. Obasanjo may also be making another strategic move of removing Bakare’s name from the ticket, in addition to responding to Jonathan’s failure to ensure that his faction got the ticket by hook or crook- something Jonathan simply refused to do, preferring to support the state governor, Gbenga Daniel and his faction.

“Buhari restated that he thought long and hard before deciding on Bakare and would not change his mind. However, we all agreed to continue to engage Obasanjo and encourage contacts with Ngozi while pushing to see real movement towards the financial and other political commitments made.

“The same evening I returned to Obasanjo to brief him. He was excited and promised to contact Ngozi, Labour Party, the ANPP leadership and a few wealthy benefactors.”

The ex-Minister also revealed how Obasanjo made a U-turn on Jonathan and threw his weight behind him regardless of his ‘weaknesses’.

He said: “Some days later on 1st February, I got a call from Prof. Julius Ihonvbere requesting a meeting to follow up on my discussions with Obasanjo and Buhari. We met in the 3G offices on 2nd February with Julius and Festus Odimegwu on the same subject.

“We exchanged information and updates on the political situation and ended with the question posed by Obasanjo to me and then to Julius and Festus- “How do we stop Jonathan from getting elected, and thereby saving the country from state failure?

“We discussed various steps but unanimously recognised that Obasanjo would abandon the plan as soon as his temporary disagreement with the Jonathan administration was resolved. Since we believed in what we were doing, we agreed to soldier on under whatever scenario.

“On 7th February, we all travelled to Abeokuta to meet with Obasanjo. Odimegwu and Julius had developed a clear roadmap about remedying the weaknesses in Buhari’s organization and campaign for Obasanjo to play his lead role in the anti-Jonathan effort.

“By then, a weird Federal High Court ruling had restored the tickets of Iyabo Obasanjo and other members of their faction in Ogun State. So true to form, Obasanjo simply back-tracked, rejected the roadmap he had asked us to prepare, and said we should now explore ways of “remedying Jonathan’s weaknesses” and supporting his candidature.

“His commitments to Buhari vanished that day, just as we all predicted on 25th January. It was a very depressing drive late at night to Lagos for the five of us-Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, Festus Odimegwu, and Prof. George Obiozor with Otunba Akingboye driving.

“We lamented Obasanjo’s consistency in putting his personal interest before that of the nation and agreed that never again will he get another opportunity to waste our time the way he just did.”

Okonjo-Iweala, two others to brief FEC today

Three ministers, among them the Minister of Finance and Coordinator of the National Economic Council, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are expected to give their stewardship at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today.

The Nation learnt that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala will lead the Minister of Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga and that of Environment, Hajia Hadiza Mailafia, to state how they and their ministries have performed so far.

The ministers will brief FEC on the progress and challenges of their ministries.

The source said President Goodluck Jonathan is determined to review and assess the performance of the ministers and those found wanting may be shown the way out.

This exercise, the source added, “is unique in the sense that the ministers will not only present their score cards to Mr President alone, but to their peers to ensure transparency and fairness.”

The source said another issue that would be discussed at today’s meeting is the planned “suspension of inter-country child adoption in Nigeria.

“The memo for this discussion will be presented by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Zainab Maina.”

Child adoption across borders is generating a lot of furore between the United States of America and Russia, and Nigeria appears not to be left behind in the inter-country child adoption controversy.

Also today, the FEC would discuss and possibly approve the establishment of a Youth Desk in relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Common currency for West Africa not visible – Okonjo-Iweala

Nigeria has warned other West African countries that having common currency for the entire sub-region will be difficult to achieve.

The Minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, stated this at the 31st meeting of the convergence Council of Finance Ministers and governors of Central bank of West Africa nations, on Friday in Abuja.

Okonjo-Iweala told the participants that they should realise how difficult it will be to establish a credible, viable and sustainable West African monetary union.”

According to her, “the journey has not been smooth, will not always being smooth and there will be periods when our collective aspiration will be tested.”

She also stated that the establishment of a single currency in the West African zone cannot be achieved by an act of law only.

She said, “A single currency cannot be introduced only by means of an act of law; it requires action by the monetary authorities and by market participants in other to make it viable and sustainable.”

The political will critical for achieving the goal, according to her, is available but the will to implement the necessary reform is needed from member states.
