2015: I want to save Nigeria from disintegration – Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, declared in Kano Wednesday that his aspiration to rule Nigeria was borne out of his desire to rescue the country from disintegration.

Okorocha, who addressed the All Progressive Congress delegates from North-West at his education foundation premises in Kano, said APC will win the 2015 general election if he emerges the party’s presidential candidate.

The governor said his contacts and connections across the country give him edge over other aspirants, adding that he has what it takes to fix the problems of insecurity, education, agriculture, poverty, as well as ensuring the unity of Nigeria.

He argued that it is high time Nigerian leaders discard religious and ethnic sentiments, saying that can never be pre-requisite for power.

Okorocha, who once aspired to rule Nigeria under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described the ruling party as a symbol of deceit and failed leadership.

Abia will have an APC governor in 2015 –Okorocha

THE governor of Imo State and presidential hopefuls of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Owelle Rochas Okorocha, on Friday, in Aba, Abia State, assured his supporters that the party would produce the next governor of the state in 2015.

Okorocha, who spoke during a unity rally of the party, held at at the Recreation Club ground in the commercial city, lamented the deplorable state of infrastructure the PDP-led administration has thrown the state and the country into, adding that the APC was going to correct such anomalies come 2015.

According to him, “The APC is not only going to be the solution to the problems of Abia State in 2015, but to the country at large,” stressing that the worst candidate in the APC is better than the best PDP candidate.

On his presidential aspirations, Okorocha said that he was in the race to represent the interest of the igbo, who according to him, have been relegated to the background in the scheme of things in the country.

Okorocha, who lamented the absence of Igbo in some of the key sensitive positions in the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, said it was an intentional act by the PDP leadership to sideline the Igbo and make them irrelevant.

He said: “You should ignore the insinuations that the APC is a non-Igbo party. If that is the case, why do personalities like me, Ogbonaya Onu, Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige and Senator Osita Izunaso among others be in the party?

“I was the person that gave the party its name. APC is a party for a new Nigeria. It is for the good of the Igbo. The PDP has made enough mockery of the igbo man. All of us are witnesses of how the PDP messed up with our brothers; Vincent Ogbulafor, Chuba Okadigbo and Evan Enwerem among others. There is no Igbo man as heads of the Customs, Civil Defence, Immigrations and Army and among others in the present PDP government.

“There is no hope for the Igbo man in PDP. Any Igbo man in the PDP is there for his personal aggrandizement and not for the interest of our people. The PDP government has nothing to show for in the last eight years.”

In his speech, the state chairman of the APC, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa, said that the party was bringing the inevitable change the people of the state need, and assured its supporters that they would be carried along in the scheme of things in the state

    Okorocha opens dialysis centre

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha at the weekend inaugurated the Ochedike Dialysis and Diagnostic Centre, the first to be built by the government.

The governor, who said the centre was built in memory of his late father, who died of kidney failure, urged Imo people from 40 years and above to go to the centre for free tests and diagnosis for prostate and breast cancer.

He said the centre owned by the government but leased to Israeli medical experts for 15 years.

Okorocha noted that cancer has killed many Nigerians, adding that when detected early, it could be handled.

He said with the modern facilities and medical team at the centre, Nigerians need not go to India for the treatment of kidney and cancer-related ailments.

“I thank God for a dream come true. My dream to save the lives of the poor indigenes has become a reality.”

The governor said the 27 general hospitals under construction would be dedicated to different fields of medicine, when completed. “We are not only good in the education sector, we are also good in the health sector.”

The Medical Director of the centre, Dr. Judith Glick, recalled how her team, led by Dr. Obi Njoku, a former commissioner for Health, presented a proposal for the centre to Okorocha three months before the 2011 elections and he replied: “Why not, if I become the governor, I will establish this diagnostic centre with you.”

Dr. Glick said her team would develop and establish more medical units in the centre, adding that investors were ready to establish a world-class hospital in the state.

“It is time Nigerians stopped travelling to other countries in search of medical attention. We are here for them to remain strong, vibrant and healthy to enable them contribute to building a better Imo State and Nigeria,” she said.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Edward Ihejirika, regretted the increase in chronic diseases, despite efforts by the government through immunisation and hygiene.

He said the governor established the centre to provide medical care and service through the most efficient and experienced dialysis technicians and nephrologists.

  • Okorocha denies plot to dump APC for PDP

Okorocha denies plot to dump APC for PDP

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has described as unfounded and malicious, a report that he will dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the report credited to a “faceless group”, the Imo Progressives and Consultative Assembly, signed by two “fictitious persons”, Nze Benjamin Irohah and Benjamin Ogoke as coordinator and secretary, was intended to cause disaffection in the APC.

The governor, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, said: “To make the falsehood look real, they claimed that because two PDP governors, Chief Theodore  Orji of Abia State and Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State attended the wedding of Governor Okorocha’s daughter last weekend, it was part of his plans to join the PDP. They followed up the false claim by asking President Goodluck Jonathan not to allow Okorocha to join the PDP.”

The statement went on: “As a responsible government, we won’t allow Nigerians, especially Imo people, to be deceived. The PDP in Imo State was responsible for the falsehood. They first planted the fallacy in an Owerri-based tabloid, we ignored them and then they hid under a faceless group to send the malicious lies to national newspapers.

“It shows the pitiable level the PDP has degenerated into in Imo State. They do these into deceive the President by giving him a wrong picture of the status of the party in the state. If truth is sacred, then we owe Nigerians the truth, and the truth on this matter is that Governor Okorocha has never contemplated leaving the APC, and to say the least, joining the PDP.”

The governor’s aide noted that the reason for the Imo PDP coming up with the falsehood was because Okorocha maintains a cordial relationship with PDP governors and has no rift with President Jonathan, adding: “Politics does not make people enemies.”

He said Okorocha would not have failed to invite Nigerians, including fellow governors, to his daughter’s wedding, irrespective of their political and religious affiliations.

“These frivolous claims should show Nigerians the kind of politics those in Imo PDP play. This is why they don’t see all the good things done by the Okorocha administration.  Nigerians should know when to play politics and when to live their normal lives devoid of politics.

“The Imo PDP came up with the cock and bull story a few days after the wedding, just to undermine its success.

“At the end of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Conference in Owerri in August, the Imo PDP came up with a non-existent Ebola case in a hospital situated near the venue of the conference, just to subvert the historic event.

“We want Nigerians to believe us. Governor Okorocha has given APC befitting teeth in Imo State and the Southeast. The indigenes and Ndigbo see PDP as a party, which has messed up their fortunes in the last 12 years, which explains its desperation for power and phobia about anything Okorocha.”

Orji, Okorocha embrace at daughter’s wedding

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and his Abia State counterpart, Theodore Orji, put aside their political rivalry yesterday and embraced at the traditional wedding of Okorocha’s daughter.

Orji arrived Okorocha’s country home in Okpoko, Ideato South Local Government Area, about 5pm with a large entourage.

He was received by Okorocha amid loud cheers of “Ochendo global”, one of Orji’s appellations.

The two governors had traded words over the sack of Imo State indigenes in Abia State civil service.

Orji, who also chairs Southeast Governors’ Forum, went straight to his reserved seat near Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

To some political observers, Orji’s visit had a political significance, folowing the plan by Southeast governors to persuade Okorocha to drop his presidential ambition and endorse President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election.

But a source close to the Imo State governor, who spoke in confidence, dismissed any political undertone to Orji’s visit.

The source said: “Orji came in his capacity as the chairman of the Southeast Governor’s Forum and it was not political. You cannot also rule out the fact that Abia and Imo are neighbouring states and Orji cannot possibly stay away from Okorocha’s daughter’s wedding.

Okorocha launches Imo Security Black File

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has launched the State Security Black File to further ensure the security of life and property.

The ceremony was held yesterday at the Nick’s Banquets Hall of the Government House in Owerri, the state capital.

The governor said the black file, in tandem with the Igbo tradition, would contain the names and communities of crime suspects.

He said: “We will go back to the cultural and traditional method of crime prevention, which involves exposing criminals. The Igbo are proud and conscious of their root and hate public disgrace.”

Okorocha urged traditional rulers to work with the government as the chief security officers of their communities.

The governor noted that the black files, as part of “operation stop them before they strike,” would be with the monarchs and government agencies.

He said the file is highly confidential, adding that it should not be used vindictively or sentimentally.

  • Okorocha, with his 5,000 children, marks 52nd anniversary

Okorocha, with his 5,000 children, marks 52nd anniversary

The 52nd birthday celebration of Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha was far from the pomp and ceremony that usually characterised the birthday of the high and mighty; neither was it low keyed as the Governor had instructed his aides, even though it was memorable and remarkable.

The governor had initially planned to have an in-house celebration with his immediate family and close associates, but he was stunned by the large turnout of people, who besieged the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC), venue of the event to wish him well.

At the well attended event, the philanthropic activities of the governor, especially his free education programme, were the focus of discussion among politicians and chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who came from all parts of the country to celebrate with him.

Also celebrating with the governor were the beneficiaries of the Rochas Foundation Scholarship scheme, whom he had adopted and given free education from primary to university levels.

Though it is unimaginable for a man to have over 5,000 children which he adequately takes care of, no matter how wealthy he maybe, but not with Governor Okorocha who has ‘multitude’ of children.

Owerri, the Imo State capital, witnessed a huge crowd when the Governor’s ‘children’ converged on the capital city to celebrate their father’s birthday. It was indeed an emotional gathering when the graduates and undergraduates of different universities in the country, spoke of how their educational careers were rescued through the scholarship offered by the Rochas Foundation.

Most touching was the ecstasy of the ‘new children’ who had not come in close contact or seen their ‘father’, since they were ‘born’ into the Rochas family. It was a memorable re-union for those who had graduated and parted ways and had not seen their parents or siblings for a long time.

Wishing the Governor long life, the students who were accompanied by their biological parents, thanked him for devoting his life to alleviating the plight of the needy. They described his adoption of the over 5, 000 children as an unprecedented philanthropic gesture.

Recounting his experience, Mohammed Lawal, a 200-level student of Kano State University, described the Governor as the hope of the poor, adding that the Rochas Foundation has assisted young Nigerians irrespective of their tribe and religion to realise their educational dreams.

He said: “My father is the most generous and detribalised Nigerian that I know. If other leaders can have his kind of disposition towards the poor, the world will be a better place. I am studying Business Administration at Kano State University today because of the Rochas Foundation. I had lost all hopes of attaining higher education because my poor parents could not afford it until I came in contact with the Rochas Foundation, where I was offered a scholarship.”

For Miss Mary Salami, a student of Medicine at Ahmadu Belo University Zaria, the Imo State Governor was a God-send that rescued her from her poor background.

She said: “I have been down without hope but I refused to give up. It was in the search for a means to pursue my destiny that I ran into Rochas Foundation and I am living out my dream. So, my advice to other people in my situation out there is not to allow their socio-economic background to tie them to the ground.”

The testimony was the same with other beneficiaries, especially those that have graduated from the University and are gainfully employed.

Describing the governor’s philanthropic gesture as shocking, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said the level of affinity between the Imo State Governor, the students and ex-students of the Rochas Foundation is simply amazing. He urged other leaders and politicians to follow his good example by investing heavily in human capital development.

He added that, “some say that the Imo State Governor is doing all these because of politics. But if this is what politics is all about, then it is good. Governor Okorocha has proved to be a leader with a large heart and this is what Nigeria needs at this moment.”

In his speech, Governor Okorocha said: “I am celebrating light over darkness, and victory over ignorance.  The Rochas Foundation spread in all the six geo-political zones of the country is an initiative to give back to the society what God has blessed me with, by offering hope to the hopeless and the less-privileged.

“My joy lay on the fact that God has blessed me to bless others.  Seventy-five per cent of my wealth goes to charity. I have every reason to be a detribalised leader if elected the President of this country, having been born by Igbo parents, educated by the North and empowered by the West.

“My success story would not be complete without acknowledging the North for giving me the needed education and the West for giving me the contact which gave me financial success.

“So, there is every reason for me to be a detribalised Nigerian when elected President.  With the help of God, I have fixed Imo State and I will also fix Nigeria to the glory of God.”

He further assured that when elected President, “I will also make education free at all levels in the country as I have done in Imo State.  I have been a strong advocate of a peaceful and united Nigeria.  It is time Nigerians discarded ethnic sentiments for the country to achieve her goal of greatness.  We must say no to the deceit of ethnic and religious sentiments that have torn the country apart and embrace one another.”

Describing the governor as a blessing to humanity, the Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere said: “The philanthropic activities of my boss started far before he joined politics. He is a man that does not want the poor or needy to cry. He has demonstrated this through the Rochas Foundation and his free education programme in Imo State.

“His 52 years on earth has been a blessing to everyone that has come in contact with him, no matter your tribe or religion and we are wishing him a happy birthday and many more years of service to humanity and our nation. He is a man of vision who has the required capacity to enthrone change in the country.”

Dignitaries present at the event were the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; South-West National Deputy Chairman of the party, Chief Segun Oni and other chieftains of the APC; not excluding thousands of young men and women who had benefitted from the Rochas Foundation Scholarship scheme.

Okorocha pardons 94-year-old, 15 other convicts

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has pardoned 16 convicts, including a 94-year-old man, Canice Egbunanne, on the nation’s 54th Independence anniversary.

It was the first time in 10 years the state’s convicts got such amnesty under a governor’s prerogative of mercy.

The governor’s action followed the recommendations of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, under the chairmanship of Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Chukwuma-Machukwu Umeh (SAN).

Eleven of the convicts were imprisoned for non-capital offences and had almost completed their prison terms.

The others had less than six months to serve.

Pa Egbunanne and 70-year-old Chidi Nwosu were pardoned on the grounds of age.

Before the amnesty, Okorocha asked the crowd at the event whether or not they supported the release of the 16 people as recommended by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. There was a deafening affirmation from the crowd.

The governor delivered an emotion-laden extempore speech that excited the crowd before he threw the question to them.

He said at 54, the nation should seriously tackle insecurity, youth unemployment, selfishness and corruption, lack of patriotism, ethnicity, insurgency and other national challenges.

He said: “As a nation, there is no better time to act and achieve the desired goals than now. We must admit that things are not working out the way they should in Nigeria. That will help us to wake up as a nation.

“Democracy has not functioned well in Nigeria. We have to strengthen our democracy because it is not being practised the way it should. When that is done, then development is guaranteed. Nigerians should see themselves as members of one family and shun leaders who preach tribalism, religious dichotomy and division among the political class.

“Nigerians should use the 54th Independence anniversary to revisit the devolution of power. A nation where the citizenry have private security, private electricity, private borehole and everything private is a failed one. To get things right, we must know when to disagree and when to unite for a common goal as a nation.”

Okorocha hailed the Army, police, the State Security Service (SSS) and other security agencies for their sacrifices.

The governor noted that they sacrifice their security and comfort to keep others secured.

Among the pardoned convicted are: Uchenna Udum, Sunday Egwu, Amos Ishaya, Anyuba Bartholomew, Benjamine Osunkwo, Okezie Obasi, Ifeanyi Nwokeji, Ogbonna Onyinyechi, Chidi Nwosu and seven others.

Deputy Governor Eze Madumere; the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Anthony Anwuka; Chief of Staff to the Government House, Sir Jude Ejiogu and Service Chiefs attended the event.

A statement yesterday in Owerri, the state capital, by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, said others included top government functionaries, traditional rulers and religious leaders.
