‘Okorocha not informed about Jonathan’s visit’

Imo State government yesterday accused the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of not informing Governor Rochas Okorocha about President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, the government said PDP applied for approval to use the state stadium for a rally, which was obliged, but it did not disclose that it would be used for the President’s reception.

“If the government was aware of the President’s visit at the time the application was received, it would have granted the use of a more comfortable place, such as the Heroes Square.”

Onwuemeodo alleged that despite the disrespect for the Office of the Governor, “he has directed that the stadium be given a facelift. The governor has also urged the indigenes to give the President a warm reception.”

He added: “Governor Okorocha regrets that PDP cannot separate the Office of the President from the party’s rally. Receiving President Jonathan and making him comfortable will not stop him from receiving the PDP returnees.

“Whatever is the reason for the President’s visit does not concern the state government. Rather, its worry is that the President of the largest country in Africa is visiting the state and nobody cared to officially inform the governor, who is also by protocol, the chief security officer of the state.”

Okorocha’s aide enjoined the PDP chieftains, who fed the President lies about the state, to take him round to see the transformation, which has taken place in the state in less than three years of the Okorocha administration.

How to end oil theft in Niger Delta, by Uduaghan, Okorocha

Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta State), Rochas Okorocha (Imo State) and other stakeholders from five oil producing states have suggested ways the nation could protect its oil installations and end crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

To them, government’s involvement of host communities in its security and development plans was one of the best ways the country could protect oil installations, stop oil theft and aid development in the region.

Uduaghan, Okorocha, Delta State’s Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Mofe Pirah, Chairman, Chevron Nigeria Ltd, Andrew Fawthrop and others spoke in Abuja at an event tagged: “The Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) Fair”, organised by Chevron, operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/Chevron Joint Venture.

Other speakers at the two-day event included development expert, Dr. Ikem Tolar and leaders of community development groups from Rivers, Ondo, Imo, Delta and Bayelsa states. The event was to examine the successes and shortfalls of Chevron’s community development concept, which allows host communities to drive development initiatives.

Uduaghan said he was part of the negotiations, which resulted in the signing of the first GMoU between Chevron, Egebma/Gbaramatu Central Development Council (EGCDC) and Delta State government on October 5, 2005.

He said the initiative has not only enhanced participatory partnership among communities, development agencies, the oil company and the government, but it has also ensured an era of accountability and transparency in the administration of community resources and execution of development projects.

“The GMoU has helped to reduce disharmony and disunity among communities, which would have arisen due to alleged embezzlement of community funds, since the communities are engaged in the day-to-day running of the programme.

“The Chevrom GMoU model has also contributed to the success of government’s peace and security agenda, as conflict in the region, which hitherto resulted in the destruction of some communities, is now a thing of the past,” the governor said.

Uduaghan urged the Federal Government to explore the option of domiciling the contracts for pipeline surveillance by engaging contractors in the host communities.

He said this would ensure effective protection of such facilities, adding that it would enhance collective responsibility on the part of the communities.

    ‘Okorocha keen on presidential race’

The Senior Special Assistant to the Imo State Governor on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, has said Governor Rochas Okorocha is keen on contesting the presidential election next year because of his passion to transform the country.

But he said the governor had not made an official statement.

“Okorocha is still consulting with political stakeholders. He will make his position known soon.

“The pressure from groups on the governor to join the presidential race and his campaign posters sponsored by the groups is an indication that Nigerians are yearning for Okorocha.

“Government’s attention has been drawn to Okorocha’s presidential campaign posters, which have been pasted in states’ capitals, including Owerri. Campaign organisations have also sprung up for his presidential bid.

“We are aware that Nigerians, especially youths, have been enthusiastic about his aspiration. Some of them, to show their seriousness, have formed groups and printed posters.

“At the appropriate time, Okorocha will announce the result of the consultations he embarked on four months ago. He will make a statement and other actions will follow. We appreciate the interest his aspiration has elicited throughout the country and thank those who have encouraged the governor on his aspiration.”

A group, the Rochas Okorocha Presidential Organisation (ROPO), has urged the governor to join the presidential race “to rescue the nation from bad governance.”

Addressing reporters in Owerri, the National Coordinator of the group, Alhaji Bala Tanko, said the advice became imperative because of Okorocha’s leadership qualities.

He described the governor as a public- spirited Nigerian, who had used his experience to give hope and succour to the masses, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.

Said Tanko: “Okorocha is one man, who sees the country as his constituency. He sees every Nigerian as his relation. Hence, in a time as this when the unity of the country is under threat, we need a stabiliser. We use this medium to enjoin him to occupy the driver’s seat in the management of the nation.”

‘Okorocha not plotting against any aspirant’

Imo State government described yesterday as unfounded allegations that Governor Rochas Okorocha and his close aides are plotting against the senator representing Imo West, Chief Hope Uzodinma, or any other governorship aspirant.

The lawmaker, through the Publicity Secretary of his campaign organisation, Declan Emelumba, alleged that the Okorocha administration planned to launch a smear campaign against him, following his purported governorship ambition next year.

In a statement by the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, the government said: “Such an allegation from a senator, calls for concern. The allegation is baseless. It can never be true because Governor Okorocha has grown beyond such petty practices.

“Okorocha has no record of smearing anybody’s image in the media, even in 1999 when he was a victim of a gang-up by the powers that be in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo to deny him the ticket. If he did not carry out any smear campaign against Uzodinma in 2011 when he was running for the Senate, is it now that he will carpet the lawmaker on the pages of newspapers?

“If Okorocha did not carry out any smear campaign in 2011 against anyone when he ran for the governorship and with the PDP governor then as the incumbent, with the three senators from the state in PDP and he won, is it now that he is the governor that he will carry out a smear campaign against anybody, including Senator Uzodinma?

    Mammoth crowd welcomes Okorocha

The return of Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha from a three-week vacation in the United States of America drew a mammoth crowd. He got a hero’s welcome from the people of the state who turned out in their large numbers. The crowd was unprecedented as the people, both young and old turned out in great numbers to catch a glimpse of their governor.

The governor, who travelled to the USA to felicitate with his daughter who was delivered of a set of twins, could not restrain his emotion when he saw the mammoth crowd that came to welcome him home and to rejoice with him for joining the league of grand fathers.

As early as 7:00 a.m. on that fateful Friday, vehicular and human movements along the road leading to the Sam Mbakwe International Airport were already grounded as large number of people, including gaily-dressed women, businessmen, religious and pressure groups, traditional rulers, student bodies, clergymen, artisans and politicians headed for the Airport to await the arrival of the governor.

At the Airport, several dance troupes took turns to entertain the crowd that defied the scorching heat of the sun, dancing to the rhythms of music that were mainly songs of praise for the governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The atmosphere was also charged in the VIP Lounge of the Airport where senior officials of the state government and other dignitaries waited anxiously for the flight scheduled for 12 noon. They chatted away time over political developments in the state and the country.

At about 1:30 p.m., the jet marked LearJet45X conveying the governor touched the tarmac. The impatient crowd broke loose and officials of the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and efforts of security agents to prevent the crowd from rushing into the tarmac were somewhat taxing.

On hand to receive the governor were his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere, the Chairman of Imo State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Eze Agunwa Ohiri, members of the state Executive Council and chieftains of the APC, among others.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after his arrival, the visibly elated governor restated his administration’s determination to continue to provide the dividends of democracy for the people.

He assured his teeming supporters who were eagerly waiting to know his next political line of action that he would run for an election, even though he said his position would be communicated to them at the appropriate time.

Away from the Airport, the various groups who were distinguished by their colourful attires, walked the over 16km distance to the venue of the grand reception, disrupting the governor’s convoy as he had to stop at several points to acknowledge cheers from the surging crowd who waved at him relentlessly.

Travellers along the Owerri/Aba Road were stranded as a result of the heavy gridlock resulting from cars that struggled to keep pace with the convoy. At various villages along the route, cannons were fired by ecstatic villagers in salute to the governor.

The event, which was meant to be a mild reception for the governor who was away during the Yuletide, turned out to be a massive political rally where the ideals and prospects of the APC were exhaustively discussed to the admiration of party supporters.

Arriving at Emmanuel College Roundabout, venue of the grand reception, Okorocha, who was obviously stunned by the large crowd of party supporters started singing and dancing to songs of praise to God for leading the state thus far.

He told the crowd that he has been re-energised to do more.

“I want to tell you that we are ready to do more. When we came on board, I assured Imo people that we are no longer under bondage. Imo today is free and better. The Egyptians we see today we shall see no more.

“Let me assure you that the free education will continue. This year will be better for our people; we are going to chase away poverty from the land. The 27 brand new government hospitals will be completed this year and no Imo man will die as a result of treatable diseases,” he said.

Half way into his speech, the governor, apparently moved by the women’s show of solidarity, announced thus: “henceforth in all the government-owned hospitals, pregnant women will be given free maternal care.”

The announcement sent the crowd into frenzy as the women temporarily took over. They danced and sang the governor’s praise.

Continuing, Governor Okorocha urged the women to continue to support his administration’s effort to rebuild the state.

“We will continue to emphasise on the free education as the biggest investment in our state. Our children will have access to quality education irrespective of their background. No Imo child will ever be allowed to waste away because of poverty,” he said.

However the import of the historic gathering was not lost to political analysts who described it as a test of the Governor’s control of the political machinery of the state.

The overwhelming turn out of people who were neither coerced nor induced to attend, proved beyond doubts that the APC-led administration in the state, had come to stay.

Chants of ‘up APC, up Okorocha, down PDP, down corrupt leaders, rented the air as the governor, who inaugurated two strategic roads close to the venue of the event, reeled off the endless list of what his administration had achieved in the last two-and-a-half years.

An octogenarian, Nze Chibuike Onyeukwu who leaned heavily on his walking stick, apparently out of exhaustion, said: “I came out to see the man that has followed the footsteps of one of our great sons, Dee Sam Mbakwe. Okorocha has truly rescued the state from a clique of misguided young men who looted the state.”

The retired civil servant further added: “What I have seen and heard is a testimony of the fact that our governor is sent by God to wipe away our tears. The projects, completed and ongoing, are there for all to see unlike before where projects only existed on the pages of newspapers and internet.”

Before the curtain was drawn for the day, the governor dispelled the rumoured rift between him and his deputy, urging the people to ignore the falsehood.

He described Madumere as his ”political son in whom he is well pleased”.

  • Umeh’s sack good for democracy— Okorocha

Umeh’s sack good for democracy— Okorocha

Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday described the sack of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh by an Abuja High Court as a healthy development for the nation’s democracy.

He said the judgment was a further justification of the divine mandate given to him by the people of the state and his decision to lead the South-East to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okorocha, who stated this at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri on arrival from a two-week vacation in the USA, said that nothing could be more rewarding than the sack of the embattled APGA Chairman.

He said: “You will recall that a few months ago, APGA threatened to go to court to recover their mandate from me, and suddenly their chairman was sacked. How best can you describe the development but to say it is divine? For me, that is democracy in action.”

The Governor who addressed a mammoth crowd of party supporters who besieged the airport to receive him, said that the nation’s democracy is on course, adding that the 2015 general elections will be free and fair.

“Nigerians should not be afraid that any of the institutions will be used to rig elections. We are Nigerians, INEC can be talked to. The Army can be talked to.

“It will be foolhardy to take sides when they don’t know who will win the election. We want to assure Nigerians that the sham that happened in Anambra can never happen again”.

Okorocha also expressed concern over the non-appointment of anyone from the South-East region as one of the service chiefs.

  • Okorocha: APC is the answer in 2015

Okorocha: APC is the answer in 2015

The Chairman of the All progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, yesterday reflected on the state of the nation, saying that the party will provide quality leadership next year.

He lamented the rot in governance, which, he said, has manifested in the collapsed infrastructure, bad roads and recurrent power outage.

Okorocha, who said that the APC is on the fast track to save Nigeria, urged the people not to lose hope for a brighter future.

The governor spoke at the 75th birthday of the APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, in Lagos. The ceremony, which was held at the Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, was witnessed by the APC family, political associates, traditional rulers, and relations of the eminent politician.

Paying tribute to Akande, the governor described him as a worthy leader, consummate politician and man of honour and integrity.

He said: “We gather to celebrate excellence. We gather to celebrate a man who has proved his worth. With his smiles, he is aging gradually and gracefully.”

The governor also alluded to Akande’s leadership style, stressing that he is never overwhelmed by difficulties and disappointments. He said: “He does not frown his face, even in the face of difficulties and challenges. He smiles always.”

Okorocha, who on behalf of the progressive governors, spoke on the vision of the APC for the country, as it prepares for the next general elections. He said the country has suffered neglect and lack of good things of life.

He said: “The reason for the APC is to correct this anomaly. The APC will not fail Nigeria. We are a people chosen by common destiny. We do not come by accident, but by the grace of the Almighty. In 2015, we will sing a new song.

“APC has come to stay and we will, indeed, provide quality leadership for Nigeria. The APC is on the fast track to save this nation for good. We are determined to make the nation great. We will not disappoint you”.

  • I’m not eyeing vice-presidential ticket, says Okorocha

I’m not eyeing vice-presidential ticket, says Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha said yesterday that he was not interested in the vice-presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as reported in a national newspaper (not The Nation).

According to the report, Governors Okorocha and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers states have been pencilled down by the party leadership as a likely running mate to former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd).

Okorocha, however, said he was under pressure to vie for the Presidency, but he was consulting and had never considered the Office of the Vice-President.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, the governor said after his consultations, he would make his decision known to Nigerians.

He said he was also under pressure to seek re-election to consolidate his achievements.

The governor’s aide said: “The truth is that Governor Okorocha is not in the vice presidential race. There has been pressure on him by Nigerians to vie for the Presidency and he is consulting.

“His consultations have not been on the vice-presidential slot, but on the Presidency. At the end, he will decide whether or not to vie for the presidential ticket.

“The pressure is also on the governor to seek re-election, to complete his transformation programmes.”

  • Okorocha calls for patriotic leaders

    Okorocha calls for patriotic leaders

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday urged Nigerians to pray for the emergence of leaders, who would be committed to the wordings of the national anthem.

He said: “Until leaders, who will be respected and celebrated by the leaders of other nations emerge, our country won’t move as fast as we expect in terms of development and growth.”

Okorocha enjoined the leaders to serve with their strength and might and defend the unity of the country by working to build a nation where peace and justice would reign.

The governor said it’s regrettable that 53 years after independence, ethnic consciousness had overriden national consciousness and political power is sought on the basis of ethnicity and religion, instead of emphasising on those factors, which make the unity of the country strong.

He appealed to leaders to build a united nation, adding that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would provide the roadmap to achieve national greatness.

Okorocha assured the indigenes on the commitment of his administration to ensure that the state remained on the fast lane of transformation and development.

According to him, the people-oriented policies of the government would be pursued with vigour.

The governor urged Imo people at home and in the diaspora to cooperate with the government to make the state a place everyone would be proud of.
