  • Bayelsa group wants Okoya to succeed Dickson

CDDB is a non-governmental organisation interested in  deepening democracy and mobilising people to participate actively in the electoral process.

Okoya, who is a US-trained professional architect and environmental designer, is also a former Commissioner for Special Projects. He  hails from Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa Central Senatorial District.

Welson said Okoya was unveiled following the conclusion of its “process of searching, finding and endorsing its preferred candidate for the office of Governor”.

He said:  “Mr. Okoya was arrived at from a pool of three other people who sent in their curriculum vitae for scrutiny and vetting, a process that took four months to conclude”.

Welson further explained that the CDDB in collaboration with The Rawls Centre came up with 10 criteria upon which the governorship aspirants were assessed.

He identified the criteria as political connection, state and federal experience, origin of Yenagoa and Kolokuma/Opokuma LGAs, visible source of income, philanthropy and knowledge of the problems of Bayelsa and possible solutions and readiness to sign a charter with the people, among others.

Weldon urged all political parties in the state to adopt Okoya as their candidate “if they wish to win the next governorship election as it is obvious that he has the complete and unalloyed support of the people of Bayelsa”.

He also said the group had commenced its countdown to the Bayelsa State governorship election in 2019.

He said the countdown involved the final push by the Bayelsa people to vote their preferred leader in the 2019 governorship polls.

He said: “The countdown will take the form of sensitisation, mobilisation and education of the people on the precepts of participatory democracy, freedom and liberty, development and accountability.

“Also, town hall meetings, rallies, seminars, conferences in addition to radio, television and outdoor publicity campaigns will all be employed to make the choice of the people count”.

  • Why I haven’t retired at 78 –Eleganza Group chair Okoya

Why I haven’t retired at 78 –Eleganza Group chair Okoya

Billionaire industrialist and Chairman of Eleganza Group of Companies, Chief Razak Akanni Okoya, clocked 78 a few weeks ago. In this interview with GBENGA ADERANTI, he talks about his business strides, why he veered into real estate and the business climate in Nigeria, among other things.

What is your assessment of the business climate in Nigeria compared to when you started?

THERE were lots of business opportunities in Nigeria at the time we started, unlike what we have today. Currently, there are too many business competitions. The mindset of the youths of nowadays is to make quick money. In my time, young individuals were encouraged to set goals and achieve them. But now, so many products have flooded the Nigerian market, which makes it very difficult for the local industries to succeed.

Considering that many companies are winding up, what has kept Eleganza going? And what cutback did you have to make to survive?

One of the major challenges is the issue of power to run the industries. But we are committed to remain in business with the passion to keep our aims and objectives to offer over 2,000 Nigerian youths employment.

What would you say has been the unique formula that aided your success in business?

I give God the glory for giving me the determination, foresight and focus. I am a very determined person. I hate to fail in whatsoever goal I set to achieve. I thank God that it has always been possible. That is why even at 78 years, I still love to work, as it gives me pleasure.

Once upon a time, Eleganza had various products. Today, there is a sharp drop and its popularity seems to have waned. Has the competition taken a chunk of your market?

The Eleganza of today is stronger and more stable than the one of yesteryears. Today, we have more range of products from chairs, coolers, luggage and diapers to ladies’ sanitary, beauty soaps, laundry soaps, multi-purpose soaps, pet bottles plus caps, pre-form bottles, shoes, hair threads, disposable/reusable plates and cups, waste disposal containers and stainless water tanks. They are produced locally in our new Eleganza Industrial City layout located at Ibeju, Lagos, on 35 hectares of land. We also have real estate investment in prime commercial areas and luxury residential estates in Lagos State. For some years, the real estate business has been very bad. We have lots of vacancies in our estates. The worst hit is our Eleganza Plaza Complex, Apapa, Lagos State.

Why the switch to property development?

At one period in Nigeria, industrialization was becoming frustrating, so we diversified into property investment on a large scale just to keep the staff in employment. Don’t get me wrong, we still continue in industries but without introducing new items or products like now. But after we have achieved our set goals in the property sector, that was what now led to the new Eleganza Industrial City Ltd. Eleganza is back bigger and better than it used to be.

What does it take to be successful in business, especially in Nigeria?

Hard work, sincerity, steadfastness and honesty.

How has passion and acumen helped you in business?

Passion with drive takes priority in all my endeavours. I love what I do, and as a result, I don’t see myself working, because when you enjoy your job, it becomes a hobby. But to be successful and able to maintain market leadership over the years, you must be intelligent enough to diversify as and when necessary.

What should government do to encourage industrial growth?

The Federal Government should stop the importation of goods that can be produced locally and increase the custom and excise duties on imported finished goods. They should also ensure that goods are fully monitored at the point of entry, because some importers are involved in sharp practices, denying the government the required revenue and also killing the local manufacturers. Smuggled goods are also killing the manufacturing industries. No country can survive with the foreign similar goods invasion into its country. Neither will the country survive by allowing in smuggled goods.

At 78, you are still actively involved in running the company. Will you ever retire as chairman?

As I said earlier, I have passion for what I do, and seeing products or items overseas stirs a passion in me to see the same or similar products produced in my country. I love to go to trade fairs all over the world, and when I get ideas, I put them into actualization. I can’t be seen running the day to day activities as I don’t have that patience or time. But I am always on board to give necessary/useful information when needed. Experience cannot be bought, as you grow into it. The day to day running of the manufacturing sector is managed by my wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Shade Okoya, and my son, Director Lanre Okoya, with other senior, experienced managers and a few expatriates while the property sector is managed by the Group Property Manager, Mrs. Modupe Solanke, and other management teams.

    What makes you happy?

I derive happiness through my establishments; that many are able to wear smiles on their faces and put food on their tables.

    How do you keep fit?

I love swimming and going to the gym to keep fit. I also enjoy spending quality time with my wife and the young children.

Looking into the future for Nigeria, how do you think she will fare this year?

I believe in this great country Nigeria, and I believe that with good policies, it will be greater than before. Production is my life. I enjoy manufacturing goods. I have travelled to China several times, and I get inspiration from what I see in China. Everywhere in China, you see cottage industries scattered around their provinces. We should emulate and follow them. The reason why most youths are not employed is the fact that they lack technical knowledge and skills. Most of them have no technical background, no research institute or centers where they could learn and become self-reliant. The government should help to make the youths focus on having an independent self-employed future by giving the youths the required technical knowledge. Graduates should be technically inclined and therefore fit into any manufacturing industry and reduce the number of foreigners becoming our expatriates. Today, Nigerians depend on imported goods. Even with lots of natural resources in our forest, we still cannot help ourselves in terms of producing furniture and other basic needs, because our youths do not have the required knowledge and skills to produce, which we need to train them on.

As you mark 78, what has changed about you?

Nothing has really changed about me except the fact that I’m still working, which I sincerely believe is what has kept me strong and fit and has kept me going.

  • How Okoya celebrated Sallah

    How Okoya celebrated Sallah

THE usual practice among Muslims, particularly the affluent ones among them, is to celebrate the Eid el Kabir, with the killing of rams which they share with friends and neighbours. Some mark the occasion by throwing parties attended only by their friends and associates while others simply make the celebration a family affair. Amidst all the pomp and ceremony, many forget that the very essence of Eid is to give to the poor, the homeless and the needy.

It is therefore always heartwarming to see a few rich Muslims who demonstrate their understanding of the true meaning of Eid through their actions. Among this enlightened few is Alhaji Rasak Okoya, the Chairman of Eleganza Group of Companies, who once again threw open the gates to his posh Oluwanisola Estate in Ajah, Lagos for scores of impoverished folks to wine and dine.

The event started with a special prayer at the Oluwanisola Estate prayer ground. Reception followed immediately at one of his well decorated halls in the estate. The Aare of Lagos and Bobajiroro of Oke Ona, Egba has with this yearly act and others continued to demonstrate that he has a heart of gold.

  • How Okoya celebrated Sallah

    How Okoya celebrated Sallah

The Eid-el Kabir spirit is about giving, loving and reaching out to fellow men in humanitarianism. Sadly, very many people do not understand the essence of the festive period. While some think it is a period to over-indulge in exotic wines and champagne, the more modest ones simply celebrate in the comfort of their homes.

fzdhszThe more thoughtful ones, however, celebrate the season with those who lack care and need to be shown some love. Prominent among those who ‎remembered that section of the society was Alhaji Rasak Akanni Okoya, the Aare of Lagos and Bobajiroro of Oke Ona, Egba.

On Thursday, last week, the billionaire businessman and Chairman of Eleganza Group of Companies opened the gates of Oluwa Ni Nsola Estate, Ajah, Lagos, for more than 500 Muslim faithful of various tribes to celebrate the Sallah festival with his family.

The event started with a special prayer at Oluwa Ni Nsola Estate prayer ground. Reception followed immediately at one of his well decorated halls in the estate. The legendary socialite, who was dressed in white agbada, radiated joy.

At 75, the ever smiling billionaire has become quieter as he ages gracefully. The Eleganza boss and industrialist is letting go his old ways, preferring to fritter a few naira notes only on important celebrations like the one of September 24.

Bimbo Okoya opts for single’s life

One of the stories contained in the Bible is that of Gomar, who was divinely instructed not to divorce his wife in spite of her filthy ways. But the kind of dedication Gomar exhibited towards marriage seems to have since died with his era. These days, lovebirds throw in the towel at the slightest provocation.

Although Bimbo Okoya has good reasons for refusing to salvage her marriage to Liberian-born Prince Urey before it hit the rocks, the daughter of business mogul and owner of Eleganza Group of Companies, Alhaji Rasaq Akanni Okoya, is yet to allow any other man into her life. She has chosen to stay away from the complications that accompany love affairs.

  • Okoya: I wasn’t paid to withdraw from race

Reuben Okoya, who withdrew last week from the Bayelsa State governorship ticket on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday said he only bowed to the party’s supremacy and loyalty to a friendship.

Okoya, who spoke in Yenagoa, the state capital, said he was neither pressurised by former President Goodluck Jonathan nor paid to abandon the race.

He said: “Contrary to the story making the rounds that I was pressurised to withdraw by the former President Goodluck Jonathan or that I was paid to step down for Governor Seriake Dickson, let it be known that I only respected the publicly stated desire of the party to give its ticket to the incumbent as the person best placed to secure victory for the PDP. I withdrew honourably.

“After due consultations with my teeming supporters and core advisers, I also decided to remain in the PDP to give my support to the party. I refused to defect to another party because of my principled belief and resolve to be a loyal and faithful party man.”
