I will use one month to commission completed projects, says Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said his administration would soon begin commissioning completed projects across the state.

Governor Okpebholo said he would use one month to commission the projects.

Okpebholo spoke on Saturday at Igueben, where he received defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing party supporters and residents of Igueben, Governor Okpebholo said the influx of defectors into the APC was a sign of his administration’s growing momentum.

The Edo governor said he would soon begin replicating Wike’s style of commissioning projects in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to him, “I want to thank all members of APC in Igueben Local Government Area. I want to thank the people who decided to say Edo is working again.

“Very soon, we will replicate what Nyesom Wike is doing in the Federal Capital Territory by commissioning projects for a whole month. We are planning that in Edo State. We will soon commence the commissioning of completed projects across the three senatorial districts of the State.

“They decided that the only way they can pay us back is to come and join us. Today, the narrative is changing.

“The past government said they were going to do a seaport; they never did a half-kilometre. But today, we are doing it. We are constructing roads across Edo.

“We are going to do what they could not do for eight years in one year. Our work will speak for us.”

Among the defectors were a two-time council chairman and former State Secretary of Edo PDP, Hon. Felix Omi Imiesili and Hon. Sylvanus Igbogbo.

  • That petition against Okpebholo

    That petition against Okpebholo

LAST Monday, a civil society organisation, the Leadership and Accountability Initiative (LAI), submitted a petition to the United States embassy in Nigeria pleading with the US to place a visa ban on Edo governor Monday Okpebholo and his family for allegedly threatening the life of former Anambra governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi. The petition alleged that the governor warned Mr Obi, leader of the volatile and irascible Obidient Movement, not to visit the state due to security challenges. The governor was further alleged to have said that should Mr Obi remain obdurate, ‘whatever he sees, he should take’. The governor’s threat, the civil society organisation wailed, threatened ‘democratic stability and political coexistence’. It is unclear whether the US would pay attention to LAI’s inane request.

LAI is one of the many civil society organisations informally and fanatically loyal to the spirit of the Obidient Movement and to Mr Obi in particular. The movement has been captured many times on record threatening, shaming, and bullying dissenters who denounce their nefarious methods and causes. The affiliated civil society organisations turn a blind eye to these constant and repeated cyberbullying by the Obidients. Now, after alleging that the Edo governor had ‘threatened’ their idol, they have begun to flex muscles. Mr Obi himself has said little about the governor’s travel advisory except insisting he would visit whenever he wanted to, but he is widely known to bask in the cultic following the Obidient Movement gives him, in addition to reveling in their aggressive posturing against his detractors. Clearly, trouble lies ahead. The Edo governor has of course doubled down on the travel advisory he issued to Mr Obi, insisting that the former LP candidate was no ordinary person and was too polarising not to be capable of provoking a breakdown of law and order. It may seem farfetched, but Mr Okpebholo seems to want to err on the side of caution.

The Edo governor may have been strident about the travel advisory to Mr Obi, but his action appears to reflect and react to the frothing political undertones of the state. It is well known that the Obidients are a little more energized and unscrupulous in Edo than in most other South-South states. They are uppity, more voter conscious than the natives, and hunt like a wolf-pack. Mr Okpebholo is not unmindful of the dangerous undercurrents he faces in the state, and may be desirous of defanging the fanaticism many Edolites observe in the Obidients in Edo. The very nature, political dynamics and ethnic pastiche of the state, which harked back to the civil war era, ensure that the tug of war between the political factions in the state will continue for a while. It will take deft politicking, particularly ensuring that Edo continues to experience three-horse election races in the state, to tame and pacify a group as relentless, immoderate, and seasonal as the Obidients.

But much more than the hysteria displayed by the petitioning civil society group, LAI, is the more rankling decision to petition the US, yes the same US now presided over by probably the most anti-democratic and narcissistic president in US history, Donald J. Trump. In 2020, when Mr Trump lost his reelection bid, he encouraged his supporters to storm America’s democratic citadel, the Capitol. The assault was defeated, but not before substantial damage was done to American prestige. Who called for a travel or visa ban on Mr Trump and his supporters? In fact, as recent as a few weeks ago, the US president threatened his former ally, billionaire Elon Musk, not to lend support to the Democratic Party. That threat, on which Mr Trump has doubled down, is a hundred times more severe and frightening than any threat the Edo governor allegedly issued against Mr Obi. In the past few months, the US has ceased to be the chief promoter or custodian of democracy as the concept is known. But it is to a country repudiating democracy and belittling global leaders that the anachronistic Nigerian civil society group has appealed for help.

American embassy officials are not morons. They will of course take receipt of any petition by any group, whether the petition makes sense or not. But they will be secretly amused, if not appalled, by how foolish a group can be to elevate a travel advisory against their hero, even if questionable, to a global issue that portrays Nigeria in a bad light. The Americans will confirm what they had long suspected that many Nigerian groups and even public officials display inferiority complex by reporting themselves to the prefectural US. Even if the Americans sneer at the petition, and they will be justified to do so, they will still take secret delight in the fact that many Nigerians continue to manifest the worst forms of neocolonialism. They can’t of course do anything about the Nigerian malaise, nor should they take it as their responsibility to decolonise the minds of Nigerians. However, their job is to represent the US as best as they can, and reinforce actions that elevate the prefectural image of America globally.

Unfortunately, there is no law in Nigeria banning the self-deprecation many civil society organisations operating locally subject their country. They are too dimwitted to know the difference, too stuck in the past to know that even if Nigeria has its limitations and defects, the anomalies are best resolved internally. To that extent, there may not be an end, in the immediate future, to Nigerian groups and even political leaders reporting their country and leaders to Washington and London. There will sadly be no end, it seems, to some Nigerians making a spectacle of themselves before the whole world.

Okpebholo lauds Falcons for securing WAFCON  final spot

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said that the success of Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco was a sign that his investment in sports was yielding results.

Okpebholo said he was proud that the state is associated with the Super Falcons team through Miracle Usani of the Edo Queens.

Speaking through Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, Okpebholo noted that his commitment in sports development was premised on the fact that ‘sports go beyond a mere vehicle for entertainment.’

“As a state, we are extremely proud to be associated with this current Super Falcons team that is making Nigeria proud in Morocco.

“This is made possible by the governor who believed so much in empowering the youths through sports,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Enabulele said the Super Falcons has shown character and patriotism in the 13th  WAFCON campaign in Morocco.

He said unity among the players was what made the Nigerian team solid from the group stage to the semi-finals match against the South African team.

“Personally, I think the team’s characters and patriotism have greatly impacted on their performance in the Morocco WAFCON campaign,” he said.

“Even with their training gear arriving late, coupled with other encumbrances, the players remained focused by getting to the Semi-finals without conceding any goal.

“I also want to commend the team’s handlers for instilling discipline and maintaining unity in the camp.

“Indeed, Super Falcons performance has shown that Nigeria’s women football have come of age,” he added.

    • Restriction order undemocratic, unacceptable, declares ADC

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has denied issuing any threat to Anambra State former governor, Peter Obi.

He said he only stressed the need for high-profile individuals, particularly politically-exposed p ersons, to notify and seek security clearance from him before embarking on any public engagement within the state.

The Edo governor said it was his constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of residents and visitors alike.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo said his duty included ensuring adequate security measures were put in place during high-profile visits or events that might attract large crowd or media attention.

He said when such protocols were ignored; they created serious security vulnerabilities not only for the visitor, but also for citizens who might be caught in avoidable threats.

The statement said: “Governor Okpebholo’s position is particularly relevant in light of the rising attacks and abductions of religious leaders, especially Catholic priests and Christian clerics.

“Edo State has witnessed its share of these tragic incidents, including the abduction of seminarians and killing of clergy in recent years. Public donations made to churches, hospitals, or other faith-based institutions, while noble in intent, must be approached with caution and in full consultation with the appropriate security channels, to avoid exposing these institutions and their leaders to further danger.

“The governor’s comments on the need for discretion in public giving are rooted in security intelligence and moral responsibility.

“Furthermore, the governor’s concerns should not be twisted for political mileage by individuals seeking to score cheap points. The state government will not fold its arms and allow politically- motivated activities to endanger lives. We expect leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit.

“Governor Okpebholo is committed to a safe and inclusive Edo State for all. His administration is working to address the insecurity it inherited, and his call for coordination and orderliness should be seen as a measure of responsible governance, not hostility.

‘’Edo State Government will continue to welcome well-meaning Nigerians, provided appropriate security and procedural protocols are respected.’’

African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the restriction order placed on the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, describing it as unacceptable.

ADC’s National Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, said this yesterday in Abuja during a news conference.

He said that the pronouncements credited to Governor Monday Okpebholo that Obi or opposition leaders were not welcome in their state was undemocratic.

“This is not democratic and it’s a very dangerous pattern. Nigeria is a free country, and every citizen of Nigeria has the right to go anywhere in this country.

“We don’t need a visa in our country. We don’t need anybody’s permission to go to any part of our country,” he said.

Abdullahi stated that ADC believed that it could only get worse, if it’s not nipped in the bud.

“We in ADC are alarmed; we are worried that we have not even started big political activities.

“We have not started campaigns and already our governors are saying that some leaders of our party are not welcome in their states,” he said.

According to him, no state belongs to any governor but the people, noting: “We will go  anywhere we want in Nigeria. Nigeria is a free country.’’

LP Senate caucus urges Okpebholo to withdraw ‘threats’ against Obi, apologise

The Senate caucus of the Labour Party (LP) on Saturday, called on Edo Governor Monday Okpebolo to withdraw what it described as his recent threats against the 2023 presidential candidate of the party.

They also asked him to apologise to Nigerians for allegedly violating the constitution which he swore to uphold on assumption of office.

The demand by the caucus was contained in a statement by the remaining four LP Senators in the 10th Senate, including Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Ezea Okey and Senator Tony Nwoye, in Abuja.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Labour Party Senate Caucus has been drawn to the disturbing and shocking statement of threat made by the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo openly threatening the life of Mr Peter Obi that his security will not be guaranteed if Peter Obi ever visited Edo State again without obtaining permission from the the Governor, Monday Okpebholo.

“Mr Peter Obi’s only “sin” was his recent visit to Edo State and donating N15 million to a nursing school in Edo State.

“We wish to remind the Executive Governor of Edo State that section 41(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, provides for Freedom of Movement and expression for all Nigerian citizens.

“Mr Peter Obi is a citizen of Nigeria and his movement is guaranteed and should not be curtailed by sheer Executive lawlessness and impudence.

“As a champion of democracy, nation-building and sustainable development, Mr Peter Obi deserves protection and support from the law and all who share the vision for a better Nigeria.

“We humbly urge the Executive Governor of Edo State to quickly withdraw this his unguarded statement threatening Mr Peter Obi’s life, freedom of movement and personal security and tender an unreserved apology to all Nigerians for violating the Nigerian Constitution which he swore to uphold.

“We implore and urge the Inspector General of Police and the Director General, Department of State Services to take note of this threat.

“The Nigeria of this century cannot afford to condone executive rascality and abuse of office by public officers for the peace and harmony of this our dear Country, Nigeria.”

Don’t probe Obaseki, Wike counsels Okpebholo

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to focus on developing the state, rather than dissipating energy and resources on probing his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

Wike, speaking in Benin, Edo State capital, said probing the former governor would achieve no meaningful results, adding that it was better for Governor Okpebholo to deploy his time and the state resources towards achieving his developmental goals in Edo.

In a statement issued yesterday by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said: “If there is someone who would have encouraged Okpebholo to probe and prosecute Obaseki, that person should be me, but what I suffered in ensuring he returned for a second term and how he paid me back is now in the past.

“We must pass through this process in life; move on for the development of Edo State. Don’t do it, I’m the one that should have told you to pursue this man. I know what I passed through.

“I should be the one to prosecute Obaseki, but what is it in life when God has given you your position? If it were to be his power, you wouldn’t be here, but God has told him, you don’t have it and I have given it to whom I want to give.”

The FCT minister also told the former governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole: “Leader, I know how pained you are and what you passed through. I know the sufferings you experienced and it was like a humiliation to you. I was part of it because I humiliated you.

“I apologised on national TV to you, sorry for what I did to you, leave it and let them carry their ‘wahala’ and go, focus on the development of Edo and you will see what you will achieve at the end of the day.”

Wike was in Benin to inaugurate the New Edo Line terminal, which is the second phase of Edo State Benin Central Bus Terminal.

The event was, however, cancelled, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, yesterday, cancelled the inauguration of the New Edo Line, a transport company that has been moribund for the past 15 years.

The event was cancelled after guests had arrived at the venue.

It was a few minutes to midday that guests at the venue were informed of the cancellation to honour late former President Mohammadu Buhari.

Sources said Okpebholo was reminded of the implication of holding such a ceremony at a time the country is mourning and national flags are flying at half mast.

The state Peoples Democratic Party, in a statement, condemned what it termed the callous and insensitive jamboree organised by the state government when the nation was mourning the passing of former President Buhari.

It said: “It said it was disturbing and disrespectful that while Nigerians were still coming to terms with the loss of a prominent national figure, “the Edo State Governor and his associates chose to throw a public celebration complete with a live band—dancing and reveling, as if in mockery of the moment.”
