The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21 election in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has urged the dealers at Evbareke and Uwelu auto spare parts markets in Egor Local Government Area to vote for his party during the crucial poll.

Okpebholo spoke at the weekend during APC’s ward-to-ward campaign. He promised to ensure that the roads leading to the markets were tarred, to make them accessible, thereby putting an end to the present difficulty.

The APC’s standard bearer said: “I will make sure I tar this road immediately I assume office as the governor of Edo State. I know full well that the spare parts markets contribute greatly to the economy of the state. I will provide dividends of democracy to Edo residents if given the mandate.”

While speaking at Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Okpebholo also promised to revive the Bendel Brewery. He assured that he would employ qualified youths. He said: “We will employ 500 teachers within 100 days in office, and provide pipe borne water. There will be mechanised farming. Women will be given soft loans, and 35 per cent quota will be allocated to women in my cabinet.”

  • ‘Why APC will win Edo governorship poll’

‘Why APC will win Edo governorship poll’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC ) in Lagos, Alhaji Ibrahim Alao Megida, has expressed optimism that the  party will  score a landslide victory at the Edo  State election  holding next month.

The Co-ordinator  of Mainland, Lagos Independent Group, said that the rate at which people were defecting from the ruling PDP in the  state shows that things have really fallen apart and the center could no longer hold.

Megida, a member of the Edo State Campaign Council for APC, said that his interactions with defected ex PDP members, during his stay in Edo, at the period of the inauguration, including Edo indigenes in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the state, where he had travelled to, showed beyond doubt that the average Edo indigene including a good number of PDP members who still pretend to be members of the party, have passed a vote of no confidence in Obaseki, as the generality of the people are already tired of him, hence Obaseki is just a lonely man, fighting a solo battle.

“A telling indication of the rottenness not only in Edo PDP, but also within the government of Obaseki, according to him “could be seen in Phillip Shaibu  his deputy, who had no option than to decamp when he could no longer tolerate the on-going mess” .

“ Our first-time visit to Edo,was really great,we had an immensely nice time,we had great fun and merriment,we really rollicked to our hearts content, and where-ever we went to, we often won converts to the APC.

The outpour of goodwill, love and support showered on us,by the Edos who heartily identified with us, were clear indication not only of the immense support that the average Edo indigene had for the APC,but also a clear expression that the APC will surely carry the day at the coming polls”,Megida stated added.

Also speaking, Wasiu Banjo, a lawyer and Financial Secretary APC, Lagos State, stressed that the formidable presence of APC top-shot ranging from the National Chairman, Abdullah Ganduje, governors, serving senators, members of the House of Reps, and a host of top functionaries from the national secretariat was really awe-inspiring.

It shook the entire Edo State. It was quite an exciting experience. Indeed the mood of the people judging from my interactions at restaurants, the motor garages, and where-ever we passed through or went to throughout our stay, were glaring indication that the APC has already coasted home to victory,”

“Obaseki himself has seen the handwriting on the wall, and has now resorted to threats.

The authorities will therefore do well by providing enough security.

This of course is very crucial and important, because it is apparent that if there is adequate security and an impartial poll by INEC,APC will surely beat the ruling PDP hands down, because PDP in Edo is already dead and buried.

The burial announcement is only a question of formality eagerly being awaited at the September polls”, said the Lawyer-politician.

He stated that the structure of political representation in Edo State, both in the Senate, and the Federal House of Reps, clearly shows that the APC will surely beat the PDP hands down. “If we look at it,the APC has two seat, out of three,in the Senate, while in the Federal House of Reps,APC has six seat,Labour two,PDP one.The implication of this is clear, that PDP is going nowhere”said the Lagos APC stalwart.

Other Lagos-based members of the Edo APC Campaign Council, which included Peter Akinniyi,Youth Leader, Mainland Independent Group,a popular socio-political pressure group,Biodun Mafe, former chairman Agbado Oke-Odo L.G also espoused the political cutting edge of the APC and its undoubted possibilities to win the September polls. Cecilia Abhulimen Osemhengbe, a prominent political top-shot of the Edo State APC,described Obaseki as a victim who only yesterday was complaining of being persecuted, all in a bid to curry pity favor and support.

“But today, Obaseki the victim of yesterday is now a villain. Not just a villain, but a villain of the highest order.”said Cecilia,an architect and former PDP stalwart, now a fanatical member of the APC.

Painting an awry picture of the incumbent PDP-led administration of Edo State, Cecilia a high-brow professional architect, remarked that “Obaseki demolished an hospital which the common man relied on,a hospital which had been there before I was born, and put a museum in place, when already we had a standard standing Museum at Ring Road.

Similarly he also demolished a State-owned library, in order to build Shoprite, which means that the education and health of the common man are much less important than the private personal interest of Obaseki”

“And could you also believe how the road Obaseki constructed on Uwelu Market Road, off TV. Road, suddenly became so horrible and dilapidated, with pot holes all within three weeks,” she revealed, adding that the incumbent PDP governor, had privatized virtually all the key ministries in the name of agencies, just as he revoked a good number of C of Os which he re-allocated to himself and his inner caucus”

On a note of lamentation, she remarked: ”This is a man from whom much is expected. Under his leadership, PDP is now in disarray, as a good number of members including my humble self have decamped into the APC. All that are left within the party are deceit and sycophancy”

According to Cecilia, Monday Okpebholo the APC guber candidate in Edo is currently the indisputable man of the people, whose name has been on the lips of all the progress loving candidates in Edo. The average Edo man has passed a vote of confidence on him.

Recounting his immense humanitarian passion, the female APC stalwart remarked how he donated a stupendous seven million naira to a student for treatment of kidney problem, even in excess of the six million which was the actual sum of money in request, apart from his innumerable empowerment gestures like building of schools purchase of vehicles, working tools, and financial empowerment which he had undertaken with amazing rapidity and consistency hitherto unequalled by any other politician in Edo State ,just as his deputy, Dennis Idahosa has similarly been doing in his Ovie constituency, combing every nook and cranny including the Riverine areas, with an amazing sense of dedication, as had never been witnessed of any other politician in the ovie constituency.

“Indeed going by the unflagging commitment with which Okpebolo and his Deputy had continued to dedicate their entire beings, particularly their resources to the service of the people, one could not but conclude that the two were indeed humanitarians first, before becoming politicians”said the Architect-Politician.

She dismissed Ighodalo the PDP candidate as a nonentity and stranger who had never really been in touch with the people. ”Look as I am talking to you, I hail from the Esan Division, with Ighodalo. Unfortunately, Ighodalo cannot speak his own native language and these are the people he wants to lead.” “In a nutshell, the entire people of Edo State are saying no to god-fatherism and no to Obaseki’s third term agenda under the guise of Ighodalo.” Cecilia affirmed with a tone of dismissal of Obaseki and the Edo PDP.

Okpebholo, at the separate meetings in Benin, promised to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, in order to adequately protect the lives and property of the residents in the 18 local government areas of Edo, and to attract local and foreign investors into the Southsouth state.

The standard bearer of APC in Edo assured that from November 12 this year, he would turn Edo into a construction site, with many legacy projects to be embarked upon, and the residents adequately empowered by his administration, thereby moving the state forward.

The Director-General of Monday Okpebholo Governorship Campaign Council of the APC, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, while also speaking, stated that Okpebholo, an excellent performer and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) specialist, would be needed as Edo governor from November 12, so as to take the state to greater heights.

He accused Obaseki of failing Edo residents in almost eight years, thereby making it impossible for his godson, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer, to succeed him.

Urhoghide, who represented Edo South Senatorial District in the 8th and 9th Senate, then on the platform of PDP, at APC’s interactive session with progressive youths and women of the state, expressed optimism that Okpebholo would win the September 21 poll, in view of his capacity and experience.

He said: “The grace of God is on Senator Monday Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, who is performing excellently, embarking on numerous development projects, and empowering the residents of his senatorial district.

“Edo State is not looking for a transactional governor. That is why PDP’s Asue Ighodalo cannot emerge victorious at the poll. We need an excellent performer in Senator Monday Okpebholo, who will hit the ground running.

“Okpebholo has a good heart, he is very humble, and with the grace of God upon him, he will be a better governor from November 12, 2024.

“Victory is coming for APC in Edo State on September 21 this year. Let us continue to work hard and fully mobilise the voters, through door-to-door campaign in our units, wards and local government areas. With God on our side, we will win.

“Edo youths and other electorate should take their destinies in their own hands by wisely and massively voting for Senator Okpebholo, as his government will have human face, and care for the state’s residents. God will crown our efforts with success.”

Urhoghide also condemned the ongoing ten-day nationwide protest from August 1, while describing it as uncalled for, and accused the unnamed leaders of opposition political parties of being behind the protest, just to distract President Bola Tinubu and cause confusion in Nigeria, but noted that the enemies of democracy had failed, while admonishing Edo youths to shun the protest, to avoid being exposed to violence, destruction and untimely death.

Ize-Iyamu, a senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), in his remarks, described the youths and women as the engine room for winning elections and defence of the votes, but mostly forgotten after the electoral victories, which he assured that Okpebholo would not do.

The two-time governorship candidate in Edo (Ize-Iyamu) also maintained that Obaseki had not done well in governing the state in almost eight years, while stating that the difference between a more focused Okpebholo and Ighodalo was very clear, and urged Edo electorate to vote en masse for APC, and protect their votes from the unnamed desperate politicians and their supporters.

Ize-Iyamu assured that APC’s Okpebholo would ensure better life for residents of the state from November 12, and would not disappoint Edo residents.

The Assistant Director, Youths and Students’ Mobilisation of Edo APC, Chief Osahon Airhunmwunde, in his welcome address, urged Edo youths not to be afraid, but to continue to mobilise other voters, in order to ensure landslide victory for Okpebholo on September 21, so as not to reinforce Obaseki’s alleged failure, but to ensure good governance from November 12.

    …says nationwide protest unnecessary

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 21 election in Edo state, Monday Okpebholo, stated that he avoids speaking carelessly to prevent lying to the electorate, saying he prefers to communicate with Edo residents through his manifesto.

Okpebholo, who represents the Edo Central Senatorial District, also criticised the proposed ten-day nationwide protest starting on August 1 as unnecessary.

He asserted that President Bola Tinubu has been promoting good governance, addressing the concerns of Nigerians both at home and abroad, and advancing the country within just over a year in office.

Okpebholo urged all stakeholders to support the president rather than distract him with protests.

He urged Nigerians, especially the youth, not to allow themselves to be manipulated by those who oppose democracy, warning against the destruction of national assets, development projects, and property belonging to individuals, organizations, and the government.

He noted that such actions could result in greater harm than the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, which led to the deaths of many innocent people and the destruction of valuable property across Nigeria.

The APC governorship candidate in Edo reaffirmed that while Nigerians have the right to protest, he cautioned certain unnamed disgruntled politicians, particularly from opposition parties, who are uncomfortable with the progress made by President Tinubu’s administration, to stop inciting unrest and sponsoring poorly timed protests.

Okpebholo made these remarks on the morning of Tuesday, July 30, during an interactive session with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel at the new state secretariat of the APC on Ikpokpan Road, Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin, the Edo state capital.

He was accompanied by Prince Kassim Afegbua, a former Commissioner for Information in Edo and a governorship aspirant on the APC platform in early 2024; Prince Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, the state’s Publicity Secretary and a lawyer; and many other party leaders.

Popularly known as Akpakomiza, Okpebholo, speaking in flawless English, refuted claims that he could not articulate himself in correct English.

He promised that if elected, he would tackle insecurity, initiate development projects, provide quality education, and hold regular town hall meetings in Edo.

He said: “I will respect the traditional institution in Edo State, and continue to hold in high esteem, the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, who is currently being treated with disdain by some persons in Edo State.

“I have the capacity and experience to govern Edo State, from November 12, 2024, by God’s grace and the massive support of Edo electorate. I will not disappoint Edo residents, but perform excellently, in order to put my detractors to shame. I am embarking on many infrastructural projects in Edo Central Senatorial District, and empowering numerous Edo residents. I will do more, when not if, elected governor of Edo State.

“There is nothing to write home about the almost eight years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki. Edo State government has failed Edo people. The anointed son of Obaseki, Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the crisis-ridden PDP in Edo State, cannot do better than Obaseki, his business associate, as Ighodalo has been the administration’s chief economic adviser in almost eight years, without any legacy development project on the ground.

“Obaseki places emphasis on numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and propaganda, without being able to justify the huge allocations and increasing Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR), while I am coming as a servant, to introduce practical governance, focus on infrastructural projects and empowerment of Edo residents in the 18 local government areas, when, not if elected. Edo residents will see real developments in all sectors.”

The standard bearer of APC in Edo also declared that he could not be intimidated in the governorship race, while giving an assurance that Obaseki would vote for him, as he knew how to manage people and resources, while he wanted the lost glory of Edo state to be restored, and that experience mattered in politics and governance.

He noted that some people thought he did not know what he was doing, but assured that upon winning the September 21 this year’s election, he would definitely ensure good governance, while pointing out that Obaseki and his drowning allies were criticising him out of frustration and afraid of his popularity, in view of his style of “less talk, more actions.”

Okpebholo stated that most local and foreign investors would not come to Edo state, because of insecurity, with many qualified youths currently jobless, while disclosing that he tackled insecurity, kidnapping and banditry out of government, while as Edo governor, he would not allow insecurity, as he would be firm and decisive.

Shaibu, who was accompanied by Edo Chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe, urged the state’s electorate to massively vote for Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, in order to ensure good governance in the state.

It was gathered that the programme witnessed a mild drama, as Godwins Omotayo, who was recently sacked as the state’s deputy governor by the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja, failed to turn up at the venue, after his arrival at the hotel the previous day, and could not deliver his goodwill message.
