NGO hails FG, Senators Okpebholo, Oshiomhole over dualisation of Benin-Lokoja road

The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the immediate funding of 30km dualisation of three sections of the Benin-Lokoja Federal Highway.

The group also commended the efforts of Senators Monday Okpebholo (Edo Central) and Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) saying with the planned construction of the road, the suffering faced by the people of the area over the years due to the deplorable state of the road, would be a thing of the past.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, yesterday said the Federal Government has put plans in place to complete the construction of the Benin- Lokoja road project within six months.

In a statement, the Coalition’s regional coordinators (South-South) and (North Central) Hon. Kamarudeen Bello and Comrade Steve Adepoju described the action of Mr. President on the road project as timely, appropriate, and a welcome development, which they said, was capable of boosting the livelihoods of the people.

While commending the renewed hope administration of President Bola Tinubu for coming to the aid of the people at this critical period, the group said, “the construction of the road would go a long way in reducing the menace of erosion around the area”.

According to the Coalition: “The road have been in deplorable condition for too long. Residents of these areas have been facing challenges of deplorable roads and gully erosion, but with the pressure mounted on the federal government by the senators representing Edo Central and Edo North, the minister for works has promised to fix the road within the next six months – this is a cherry news that must be commended because our people will smile again when they see positive improvements.

“Those of us at the Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa therefore commend Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Works, Senator Monday Okpebholo and Senator Adams Oshiomhole for putting the people first. This is leadership from the representatives of the people. Governance is not about the amount of speech you deliver on television or on the floor of the National Assembly but the capacity to bring development and dividends of democracy to your people”.

Edo APC: Tinubu meets Okpebholo, Idahosa, others at the Villa

President Bola Tinubu has just met with the leadership of the Edo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja.

The meeting, which had the party’s candidate for the upcoming governorship election, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Hon Dennis Idahosa, in attendance, was aimed at ironing some disagreements out.

Although details of discussions in the meeting were still sketchy at the time of filing this brief, a source at the meeting, said one of the resolutions was for the running mate, Idahosa, to withdraw his protest litigation against the candidature of Okpebholo.

Recall that the primary election that eventually produced Okpebholo as a candidate had initially run into a controversy as Idahosa was first declared by Governor Hope Uzodinma-led committee.

Edo 2024: APC to unveil Idahosa as Okpebholo’s running mate Monday

The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will on Monday, March 18, in Abuja unveil the representative of Ovia constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, Dennis Idahosa, as the running mate to APC’s governorship candidate in Edo for the September 21 election, Senator Monday Okpebholo

A senior aide to Idahosa in a phone chat confirmed that his boss, a gubernatorial aspirant of the APC in the February 22, 2024 direct primary election, had consented to become the party’s deputy gubernatorial candidate.

He also disclosed that Idahosa would withdraw his lawsuit concerning the contentious shadow poll, owing to the intervention of prominent Nigerians.

A former representative of Oredo constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who had concluded arrangements to defect to APC, was earlier tipped to be Okpebholo’s running mate, but he was later dropped for strategic reason.

Ogbeide-Ihama, an ex-governorship aspirant of PDP in Edo, and an iconic member of Chief Dan Orbih-led Legacy Coalition of PDP, had made up his mind to quit PDP with his teeming supporters, for Governor Godwin Obaseki-backed Asue Ighodalo to lose the governorship poll.

Edo’s acting chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe also disclosed that arrangements had been concluded to unveil the party’s deputy governorship candidate, but he declined to mention the name of the top politician.

Tenebe said: “Our choice of running mate emanated from the people, and we are going to unveil him tomorrow (Monday) in Abuja. It will be the youngest ticket ever in the history of Edo State, and that is what we will use to defeat the other parties.

“We are not like them (other political parties) that are producing much older people to govern Edo State. We are going to produce a young team.

“For now, I will not mention the name of the running mate to Senator Okpebholo, the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly. That is why we are unveiling him tomorrow (today) in Abuja. So, everybody will see the politician”

It was learnt through reliable sources that President Bola Tinubu personally intervened in the Edo APC’s political tussle, and directed the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, who hails from Edo North senatorial district, to ensure that Idahosa’s name was submitted as the party’s deputy governorship candidate.

Edo guber: Okpebholo a refined product, sellable candidate, says Ganduje

The national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared that the party is on the way to winning Edo state back to the progressive camp.

He said that the emergence of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the party’s governorship candidate in the just concluded primary election had put the party on the path to regaining Government House on Dennis Osadebe Avenue, Benin City.

The chairman said this on Saturday in Abuja while presenting a certificate of return to Okpebholo, who won last Thursday’s party’s shadow election.

He noted that a direct mode of election was held in 192 wards in the state with records and video evidence, adding that Okpebholo was declared the winner of the primary because he got the highest votes.

Ganduje also stressed the need for other aspirants in the primary election to work with the party flag bearer to ensure the party’s victory in the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

According to the chairman: “The full cooperation, harmony and unity of all aspirants and members of our party is all we need now to win Edo in the coming election now that the primary is over.

“With the emergence of Senator Monday Okpebholo, we (APC) are on the way to win Edo State back to the progressive camp.

“We believe the party has a product that is refined, well packaged and sellable product to the electorate in the person of Okpebholo and we are therefore ready to win Edo,” Ganduje said.

Earlier the Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, while presenting Gov. Bassey Otu’s primary election committee’s report to the National Working Committee (NWC) said the exercise was adjudged nationally and internationally to be the most peaceful, fairest and transparent in the state.

Speaking shortly after receiving his certificate of return the party’s flag bearer, Sen. Okpebholo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for walking the talk and renewing the hope of the Edo people by practically defending democracy as he has always done all his life.

He was also full of praises to Ganduje, the party’s National Chairman, the National Working Committee, and our political leaders in Edo State led by Comrade Senator Adams Oshiomhole who have piloted the affairs of the party.

While appreciating members of the party and the people state, Okpebholo said, “The APC family in Edo State has made a bold statement by choosing good over evil, development over inanities and love over hate.

“It has been clear to every discerning mind that Edo State has gone on the wrong path of development with the elitist style of governance with little regard to reality.

“The journey to resetting our dear State by strengthening her HEARTBEAT with actionable development begins today with your reposing confidence in me as the flag bearer of our great party, the APC.”

He then called on other aspirants who contested the party’s ticket with him to join forces with him to ensure that the APC won Edo in the coming election slated for Sept. 21.

Also speaking at the event, the former deputy governor of the state, Sen. Lucky Imasuen one of the aspirants who contested the party’s ticket with Okpebholo said the party’s NWC was “hard-working, sincere and fair in the handling of the Edo primary.”

He also commended the Primary Election Committee for a job well done, assuring that the other aspirants would work hand in hand with Okpebholo to ensure APC’s victory in the coming Edo governorship election.

Meanwhile one of the governorship aspirants in the just concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, on Saturday stormed the national secretariat of the party, demanding justice.

He appealed to President Bola Tinubu Ahmed Tinubu to call the National Working Committee (NWC) to order.

Idahosa, who was initially declared winner of the shadow election by the Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma, also threatened to drag the party to court if justice is not done.

Addressing newsmen at the main gate of the APC National Secretariat, Hon. Idahosa said “I am not here to make trouble, I am a lawmaker but one thing that we want is justice. Today, I might be a young man but it might be the children of NWC members tomorrow. We have to do the right thing, if we continue to do what is wrong as a country, we are not going to move forward.

“So my fellow party members, I am not here to make trouble, I am only here to seek justice, whatever they have done if it is not properly managed, I have written yesterday to the appeal panel committee and I know they will do justice, even if whatever they did, I just want to go through the process, having exhausted the party’s resolve mechanism, I will go further, I will seek justice in the court of law and I will not allow this to stand.”
