One of Nigeria’s leading indigenous Oil and Gas companies, Dan Oil and Petrochemicals Limited and The Wells Carlton Hotel and Luxury Apartments, a five-star hospitality outfit which provides a surreal, fantasy-like journey into a glamorous world of pure luxury, have become the latest corporate organisations to throw their weight behind the IAAF silver label international 10km road race.

‘While Dan Oil, an indigenous Oil and Gas Company incorporated in 2002 under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a limited liability Company, will sponsor our women empowerment programme, The Wells Carlton hotel and apartments is coming as our hotel/hospitality partner’ said the delectable Miss Etukudo.

”The Okpekpe race is not just about athletes running on a smooth, asphalted road constructed by the Edo state government in and around Okpekpe town, it is also used as a platform to promote causes that will benefit the society or draw attention to social vices.

Since the inaugural edition of the race, we have always had people and organisations who used our platform to promote so many charitable causes.

”On our own, we have also been consistent in empowering women of the community as we know there is no better tool for development that is more effective than empowering our women. As the saying goes, when you educate a man, you educate an individual but when you educate a woman, you are educating an entire family.

”This is why we are happy that Dan Oil and Petrochemicals Limited have accepted to empower not less than 50 women in and around Okpekpe town. The women will be trained and provided a tool to work,” said Etukudo.

”We are also happy with the official announcement of The Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments as our official hotel/hospitality partner. We are super delighted the owner of the five-star hotel, Captain (Dr.) Idahosa Wells Okunbo JP has also registered for the race.”

”Our target is to get a gold label for the race next year and the new IAAF road race rules have made it compulsory that we use the template of the label we are aspiring for in the event preceding the label. This means that this year’s race will have a gold label standard written all over it, especially in terms of the quality of the elite field.”

Amodu reveals Coca-Cola and Eva will be providing cash and all its products in Nigeria for the race.

”We will have 350 cases of Eva Water 50cl (4,200 bottles) supplied by our latest partner.

  • Walelegn, Tuei lead elite class to Okpekpe race

Ethiopia’s Amedework Walelegn and Kenya’s Sandrafelis Chebet Tuei, will lead a truly world-class elite cast of athletes to the IAAF silver label sixth Okpekpe international 10km road race scheduled to hold next weekend in Okpekpe near Auchi in Edo State of Nigeria.

Walelegn is the third fastest man over the 10km race so far this year, courtesy of the 27:37 seconds he ran last March to win the Laredo 10km road race on March 11 in Laredo, a town in the autonomous community of Cantabria located between the cities of Santander and Bilbao in Spain.

He will be challenged for the $20,000 top prize money for men by Kenyan trio of Timothy Kiplagat who came third (27:52) behind the Ethiopian at the Laredo race. Josphat Kiprono Menjo who came fifth (28:28) at the Valencia 10km road race in January and holds the fourth fastest time of all-time (27:04) and 2016 winner, Simon Cheprot who will be coming to chase history as the first man to win two Okpekpe titles.

For the women, Kenya’s Tuei will be the athlete to beat. She is the fastest woman over the distance so far this year courtesy the 30:57 seconds she ran to win the Valencia 10km road race in January. Her time is the 36th joint fastest on the all-time list, and she will be hoping to become the fourth Kenyan woman to win the title.

Tuei will be hotly challenged for the top prize of $20,000 on offer by compatriot Mary Waithera who won the Laredo 10km race last March with 31.48  seconds, the ninth fastest time in the world so far this year. Also in with a chance is 2016 winner, Pauline Njoku Wanjiku who, like Cheprot will be seeking a slice of Okpekpe history as the second woman to win two Okpekpe titles.

Ethiopia’s Buzunesh Getachew Gudeta and Bahrain’s Damaris Muthee Mutua are also two women that could challenge for the title. Gudeta was third in 2016 and would assume she is ripe to mount the podium as champions, while Mutua who ran 34:06 in Kenitra, Morrocco about two weeks ago, will fancy her chances of becoming the first woman from the Middle East to win the Okpekpe title.

”The quality of elite runners for this year’s race is the best so far, and this is easy to understand. As the first IAAF silver label race to be staged in West Africa, the quality must be very high and what we have done is to assemble gold level running men and women elite athletes for the race. This is a step higher than what the IAAF requires us to do,” said Esan.

  • Nigerian Breweries backs Okpekpe race

Pioneer and largest brewing firm, Nigerian Breweries Plc has joined the growing list of corporate organisations who have thrown their weight behind the first IAAF silver label road race in West Africa, the Okpekpe international 10km road race.

The spokesman for the race Dare Esan revealed that the company is coming in as a Friend of the Race.

‘It is a massive boost for the image of the race to have a pioneer brewing company support an event in which history will be made on May 12, 2018. Remember the race next month, is the first ever IAAF silver label road race in Nigeria and West Africa.

”In 2015 we became the first road race in Nigeria to be granted an IAAF label status. This means the Okpekpe race is regarded as one of the world’s leading road running events,’ said Esan who explained that a label certifies the global sporting significance of the race, the organisational quality and the compliance with relevant IAAF competition rules.

Nigerian Breweries Plc will support the race with cash and some of their products.

‘Nigerian Breweries have offered a cash support as well as some quantities of its non-alcoholic brand, Amstel Malta for the race. We are delighted to have the first and largest brewing company in Nigeria, a socially responsible corporate organisation with a good track record of corporate social initiatives, back the first IAAF label road race in Nigeria.’

‘Nigerian Breweries is a major player in sports sponsorship and promotion in Nigeria and it is to our credit that a company that supports the Nigerian senior football team, the Super Eagles and the historic Nigerian winter Olympics team is also throwing its weight behind another historic event. This is a testimony to the growing popularity of the Okpekpe race.

It is really heart-warming to have a company that has been very active in supporting the national developmental aspirations of Nigeria identify with a pioneer event as Friend of the race,’ said Esan who also revealed that the theme song for the race will soon be released.

The sixth edition of the Okpekpe international 10km road race will be live on television across the globe, as all arrangements have been concluded with Supersport for a live telecast of the historic race in Okpekpe near Auchi, Edo state of Nigeria.

The Okpekpe international 10km road race is the only road race recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

It is organised by Pamodzi Sports Marketing, leaders in sports marketing and hospitality business in Nigeria.

  • ‘Edo did not spend N70m on Okpekpe Race’

Organisers of the 5th Okpekpe 10km International Road Race have denied  speculations in a section of the sporting media that the Edo State Government spent N70million to host the one-day race.

The 2017 edition of the IAAF Bronze labelled race was dominated by road runners from East Africa with Ethiopian trio of Luel Gebrasilasis (29mins 28 secs), Jima Bekele (29.34), and Dawit Fikadu (32.22) making a clean sweep in the male category. Another Ethiopian, Gebru Azemra, ran 33. 59 to win the women’s event.

Yesterday, CEO of Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the franchise owner of the race, Mr Mike Itemuagbor, said in a statement that Edo State government did not bankroll the race as was been erroneously speculated.

“The 2017 edition of the Okpekpe 10km International Road Race was not bankrolled by Edo State Government. I don’t know where the reporter who wrote that report got his fact before rushing to the press to misinform people.

“The 2017 edition was sponsored by Pamodzi Sports Marketing and its partners. This is the fact of the matter which is well known by everyone connected with the road race,” Itemuagbor said in the statement.

While thanking Governor Godwin Obaseki for sustaining the involvement of the state in race, Itemuagbor revealed that the Edo State government only offered to pay the prize money for the only IAAF and AIMS certified road race in the whole of West Africa.

“Edo State government is only involved with the payment of the prize money to the winners which is not anywhere in the region of N70million erroneously reported,” the Pamodzi chief executive clarified.

Despite the plaudits received by the organizers for the quality manner the 2017 edition was professionally handled, Itemuagbor insisted that the next edition promises to be better.

“Our target is to make the Okpekpe race an IAAF gold labeled event.  We want to make Okpekpe race the preferred destination for the world’s best road ruuners just like what the London, Berlin, Boston and New York marathons have become today,”  the foremost sports marketer in the country said.
