Why APC will win Anambra South by-election – Okwuosa

A governorship aspirant for the November 2025 election in Anambra State, Sir Azuka Okwuosa, has expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win the forthcoming senatorial by-election in Anambra South District.

Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to announce a date for the election, it is expected to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away in the United Kingdom last year.

Speaking to journalists in Enugu, Okwuosa highlighted the late senator’s impactful projects in Anambra South and the increasing influence of APC in the state as factors that would secure the party’s victory.

He emphasized that winning the by-election would demonstrate the APC’s readiness and capability to contest and win the governorship seat in 2025.

Okwuosa said: “If you check today Anambra is a state where we have multiparty relationships among APC, PDP, APGA and Labour Party. Today we see like in the present senatorial by-election which was occupied by an APC senator, late Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah. So, we have no reason not to recapture that seat because presently, out of the three senatorial seats in Anambra, LP has two and you know that LP will like to have all three seats, which is quite impossible in Anambra state.

“And I’m also aware that the governor coming from the same South senatorial district as the late Ifeanyi Ubah, will like to do everything humanly possible to see whether APGA will capture the seat.

“But today, I can assure you that the work which the late senator did and with the major incursion of APC in Anambra state, we have no choice other than to retake that seat. Anything short of that will not be acceptable to us. It’s a precursor to the governorship election. We need to get it right to show our capacity and to show our willingness to go for the governorship seat.

“This by-election will take place on or before February which is just less than two months away. So, we’re going into that election with every sense of purpose and commitment because the success of that senatorial by-election will show our capacity and our enablement to go for the main governorship election later this year”.

    Okwuosa wary of Ethiopia

Nigeria defender, James Okwuosa, believes their 2014 FIFA World Cup playoff opponents, Ethiopia, will not be an easy tie.

The Chippa United centre-back told supersport.com that though his countrymen took to jubilating after being drawn against the East Africans, he does not expect the contest over two legs to “be easy.”

Nonetheless, the former Enugu Rangers captain is confident that the African champions will overcome the Walya Antelopes in Addis Ababa on October 13.

“It’s not going to be easy against the Ethiopians. They are one of the 10 teams that reached the playoffs and that is a big achievement for them and we have to respect that. But we will just work hard as a team as we’ve always done and by God’s grace we will go through.

“For us it is a good draw but we can’t afford to take things for granted because we are African champions. Yes our fans are happy that we got Ethiopia as opponents (in the playoffs) and I quite understand them from the point of view of a fan. But in football today, there are no easy teams especially when it comes to international football.

“But irrespective of that we are going there (Addis Ababa) to win the game so that the second leg can be more easy for us,” said Okwuosa to supersport.com.

Okwuosa is one of the 23 players called up for the first leg of the World Cup playoffs against Ethiopia next month.
