Ola Aina: I like to score special goals

It’s no longer news that Ola Aina played a key role in Nottingham Forest’s impressive victory over West Ham United after delivering a surprise wonder goal in their Premier League game on Saturday. The Super Eagles defender’s thunderous strike not only sealed the match but also sparked discussions about the team’s remarkable rise in the Premier League standings, Footballrover reports.

As Forest climbed to third place, their highest position in 26 years, Aina took a moment to reflect on this unforgettable moment and the secret behind their current form.

Aina opened his account for the season with a brilliant left-footed shot from the edge of the box, wrapping up a crucial win that secured all three points for his side.

Nottingham Forest has now achieved three consecutive Premier League victories, showing their intent to compete at the highest level.

Under Nuno Espirito Santo, the team knew they could break into the top four with a win, and they delivered emphatically, defeating the Hammers 3-0 at the City Ground.

The Reds made a positive start, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Nicolas Dominguez both testing the West Ham defence in the first ten minutes.

Chris Wood and the former Chelsea star went on to score the opening goals before Aina’s breathtaking effort capped off a dominant performance.

    SURPRISED GOAL

In a post-match interview with Optus Sport, Aina expressed his delight, saying,

“Sometimes it comes out. I like to surprise everyone; I just bounced up right, and then I was knackered anyway, so I just thought I might as well hit it.”

When asked if he ever anticipated it would hit the top corner, the 28-year-old Nigerian international replied,

    “Something like that, yeah!”

And while speaking on their unexpected rise to third in the Premier League table, Aina emphasised the team’s work ethic:

“Yeah, it’s, you know, I think it’s just that we are taking every game as it comes and we’re just working hard, you know. I think that’s the formula for us. Just work hard and take every game as it comes, and like I said last week, come the end of May, we’ll just see where we are at.”

    10 in 10

Having featured in all of Nottingham Forest’s ten league games this season, Aina’s contributions have been integral to the team’s success.

The Super Eagles defender’s thunderous strike not only sealed the match but also sparked discussions about the team’s remarkable rise in the Premier League standings, Footballrover reports.

The goal also got the attention of many pundits, among them Troy Deeney, the erstwhile player-manager of Forest Green Rovers.

After overlooking every Forest player following the win over Liverpool, Deeney has now included a Forest man for three weeks on the spin.

This time, the BBC Premiership pundit has chosen Aina as the man to get the nod and he believes he’s been proving his worth for a number of weeks now.

He told BBC Sport: “I could have put Ipswich’s Leif Davis in and wanted to but Forest are steadily going about their business.

“Aina was great in the win over West Ham – he has been for a few weeks and has been unfortunate to miss out. I like to give credit to people who have shown they can do it over a period of time.”

The Watford legend therefore named the Super Eagles defender in his Premier League team of the week.

    THREE TIMES LUCKY

Smarting from the sparkling form, Aina could not help recollect his almost botched transfer to Nottingham Forest and how he almost did not come to the English club Torino.

He said the team was persistent and it was only the third time that they came calling that Torino allowed him to go.

He said Nottingham Forest ended up shelling out money to secure his services.

The versatile full-back has to go down as one of the Reds’ best pieces of transfer business of recent years. After leaving Torino in the summer of 2023, he put pen to paper at the City Ground as a free agent and has since established himself as a key player.

But Aina says he could have signed for the club a year before he actually did – albeit for a fee. It seems it was a case of third time lucky for Forest in pursuit of the Nigeria international.

“I was coming into my last year at Torino and initially they wanted to buy me,” Aina told the Counter Attack Podcast. “This was Forest’s first season in the Prem, but Torino said no, whatever.

“I started the season and they came again in January wanting to buy me, but Torino said no. I finished the season at Torino and was a free agent, so Forest was like, ‘Yep, we’ll grab him for free’. That’s how it happened.”

At the end of last term, Forest activated a one-year extension option on Aina’s initial 12-month deal. As it stands, it means he is due to become a free agent again next summer.

Aina may have done well enough going by his top notched skill to justify Forest extending his contract.

    HAPPY TO BE HERE

He said he is happy to be at Forest and feels among family.

“I feel very much at home at the club. “I’ve been really happy with my time spent here at Forest and the fans have been great. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the future holds.”

Nottingham Forest activated a one-year extension in Aina’s contract last May, and the 27-year-old has enjoyed a positive first season on Trentside having joined the club on a free transfer last summer.

Aina scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 home win over Aston Villa, whilst also reaching the final of the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria as well as being named in the Team of the Tournament.

Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson added: “Since Ola joined the club last summer he has impressed all of us with his performances both on the pitch and also with the positive personality that he brings to the group every day.

Nottingham Forest have extended the contract of Super Eagles defender, Ola Aina by one more season following his modest performance for the Reds which steered them out of relegation in the English topflight.

The Nigeria international joined the Reds on a free transfer last summer from AC Torino and has decided to extend his contract until the 2024-25 season.

Aina made 22 appearances for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side the just past season.

The 22-year-old also claimed the Goal of the Month award once.

“I’ve been really happy with my time spent here at Forest and the fans have been great,” Aina told the club’s official website.  “I’m really looking forward to seeing what the future holds.”

Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson added: “Since Ola joined the club last summer he has impressed all of us with his performances both on the pitch and also with the positive personality that he brings to the group every day.

In a related development,  Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi is delighted Nottingham Forest survived the drop from the topflight.

Despite the rough start, the Red have managed to maintain their top-flight status for the second consecutive season.

Awoniyi played an active role in ensuring the club avoided relegation last season but injuries hinder him from contributing as much as he would do.

“After all is said and done, I’m who II because of you ( God), see you next season Premier League.

“Another year to remember again. You deserve it, Nottingham Forest.

“Thanks for your support always and for helping us to push through.

“You truly the best, You RED,”  he added.

Awoniyi scored six goals with three assists in 20 appearances.

Aina to get extended contract at Forest

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina is set to have his contract at Nottingham Forest extended as he returns to training this week after coming back injured from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The club is also considering a new deal for Willy Boly. There is an option to buy Arsenal loanee Nuno Tavares.

Forest trimmed the squad further in January and also lowered the average age. The plan this summer would be a similar strategy and a net-zero spend.

Their financial position will be ultimately decided by the final nine games, as they bid to avoid relegation.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s team face Crystal Palace on Saturday week with striker Chris Wood expected to be fit.

Aina’s countrymate Taiwo Awoniyi will be missing for a few weeks with an injury linked to his recent groin operation but initial fears that he could be out for the season have been allayed.

Forest have already been docked points for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Ola Aina walks for charity, gifts young fans signed shirt

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina displayed remarkable compassion this week, stepping up to support a young Nottingham Forest fan battling illness. Eight-year-old Felix Keightley, diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma in October 2023, has bravely endured treatment while fundraising for worthy causes.

Keightley embarked on an ambitious 50-mile walk, tackling two miles daily to raise money for the Nottingham Hospitals Charity and Young Lives vs Cancer.

During a visit to City Ground as part of his fundraising efforts, Felix received a heartwarming surprise. Nigeria international Ola Aina, recently named in the Africa Cup of Nations starting XI, joined him for the final lap around the pitch.

Aina’s act of kindness extended beyond the walk. He presented Felix with a signed Forest kit, offering further encouragement in the young fan’s fundraising journey.

The 27-year-old actively participates in charitable activities in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria, demonstrating his dedication to giving back.

Aina’s actions serve as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the power of compassion and the impact athletes can have beyond the game.

His magnanimity inspires not only Felix but also others facing challenges, encouraging them to persevere and find strength in community support.

Way back in 2016 long before becoming a senior appearance for Chelsea, he donated old boots to kid footballers in Africa.

Then at the age of 19, and hotly tipped to make the first-team after winning the U21 Premier League, FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League with the Blues, Aina’s sponsorship with adidas means he’s already been through more boots than we’ll see in a lifetime – and instead of throwing them away or storing them as mementos, he’s donating them to Nigeria.

“All my old boots, balls and kits being shipped off to the motherland (Lagos Nigeria) this morning to the less fortunate #giveback #2nddrop #nigeria”

Aina has settled nicely at Forest informing that he’s enjoying every bit of his time.

He said: “It’s been fun. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it so far. “The staff, the players, the city itself, it’s been really good to me so far and long may it continue. I was the first to arrive last summer and it was fun, I had Taiwo here who I know from Nigeria, I knew Morgan and Harry Toffolo too, so it was smooth sailing.”

Forest has not been finding things easy, though. He said: “The games have been tough, but I feel like for myself and the team, it’s good to see where we’re at. I feel like we haven’t done too bad against the bigger teams, it’s been a challenge but it’s been a good one. It shows the leaps and bounds the club have taken within just one season. It’s good to see we are competing and we do feel strong, so it’s good to have that feeling and hopefully we can have a strong season.

“I feel like we have to put a strong string of performances together, hopefully climb-up the table and ultimately play well to get the results we need. If we do that, we can have a good season. First and foremost, everyone’s key in the team and everyone’s got a role to play. There will be moments in the season where we’ll look to someone and we’ve got a few of them in our team, from Morgan, Callum, Anthony and Taiwo.

“Even in midfield we’ve got players who can make the difference, so it’s really good to have that. We’ve got several in the team so it gives us confidence heading into games.”

AFCON Final: I won’t stop taking penalties, Ola Aina vows

Super Eagles wing-back Ola Aina has said he would love to take another penalty for Nigeria if given the opportunity after his miss against South Africa on Wednesday.

Aina spoke ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON final with Ivory Coast on Sunday.

Aina, who has been an important player in Jose Peseiro’s side at the tournament, missed his penalty kick during Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final win over South Africa.

Speaking with Oluwashina Okedeji of Planet Sports Football Africa, Aina said: “Football is a roller coaster. I could put my money on it, I could put my house on it, I could put everything on it that I would’ve scored my penalty [against South Africa].

“Normally I back myself because I am very good at them. Someone had to miss unfortunately and it was me.

“The boys and Nwabali saved me and saved all of us and I am just grateful for that. You look forward and if it comes to it again [against Ivory Coast] I will be taking another one, but that is just me.”

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has said the Super Eagles are ready for the Bafana Bafana of South Africa for  today’s semi-final clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

The two sides  will face-off in the make-or-mar encounter slated for the Stade de la Paix, Bouake.

In his pre-match press conference at Stade de la Paix in Bouaké ahead of the match, Aina said he and his colleagues  were well prepared for the  Bafana Bafana challenge.

“It is going to be a good game between two good teams. Myself and my teammates are ready for this challenge,” Aina said during a press conference in Bouake.

The Super Eagles have performed creditably well in the tournament so far; winning four games and drew one. However, the Nottingham Forest defender heaped praises on the team’s head coach Jose Peseiro for the team’s success.

“I think he (Peseiro) is a good coach. He’s hard on us when he needs to do that and lenient when he needs to. There’s a correct balance to help the players do things the right way.”

Ola Aina: Scoring first goal for forest amazing

Ola Aina scored for Nottingham Forest over the week, and he’s received praise from past and present teammates.

The 27-year-old scored his first goal for the club during a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Aina scored a wonderfully well-taken goal in the sixth minute of the clash. After Harry Toffolo had put the ball into a good area, the Nigeria international ran onto it and planted his effort beyond Emi Martinez.

It was a welcome victory for Forest that needed a win to stop a run of six winless outings in the Premier League. Aina’s goal was followed in the second half by a strike by Orel Mangala in the 47th minute, with the Reds seeing the game out.

    PRAISES FOR AINA

It’s quite intriguing that Aina has been receiving some praise from teammates of old and they’ve had some fun with the Forest man.

Fulham pair Alex Iwobi and Tosin Adarabioyo, who are his country teammates were the two players to comment on his Instagram post.

Iwobi said: “Don’t Shoot, Sorry My Bad!!!”, in a seeming dig towards the defender not scoring many goals. In truth, he’s probably got a point!

Adarabioyo was next to weigh in with a comment. He said: “Only bangers in the Premier init?!”, with the centre-back playing alongside Aina during his loan at Fulham previously.

Several Forest stars also reacted to Aina scoring, with Callum Hudson-Odoi summing the strike up perfectly. He put the flame emoji alongside the word, ‘Luluuuuuu’, which appears to be a nickname for Aina.

Steve Cooper also praised his side for sticking to the game plan.

“I felt we were good for the win,” he said.

“Villa had a lot of the ball, they never really peppered our goal, but they’re one of the in-form teams in the league. You see where they are, the players they’ve signed and who the manager is, you know you’re coming up against a really good team.

“I thought our goals were excellent in terms of the moves. For Orel to get in that area, it’s a great strike for the second goal, and the move that led to the first goal is excellent and something we worked on in terms of getting into that area, you just want the talent to take over and for them to believe in themselves.

“There’s a lot that goes on tactically against Villa in the way they play with their box in midfield. You really have to match it, because if you don’t, they can hurt you, but tactically without the ball we were absolutely brilliant.

“There were some brilliant individual performances and there’s a lot of gratitude from me to them for sticking to the plan.”

Aina is now getting a proper crack of the whip under Cooper in the Premier League. The talented defender has already showcased his quality during the current campaign and he can play on both sides of the defensive unit.

Forest paid big money to sign lots of players in the summer. However, in terms of being savvy, the club haven’t really signed any better than Aina on a free transfer.

The challenge for Aina is to maintain his position as a regular in the Forest team. On current form, there is absolutely no danger of him losing his place any time soon.

  • OLA AINA: I’m enjoying my stay in Nottingham Forest

OLA AINA: I’m enjoying my stay in Nottingham Forest

Nigerian star player Ola Aina has made great impression since returning to England to play for Nottingham Forest in July.

Less than three months after completing a one-year deal to join the Premier League side following his release from Torino and making his debut for the club on 12 August in a 2–1 loss against Arsenal in the Premier League, Aina has done well to be voted as Forest’s Player of the Month for September.

This is after featuring five times in the current Premier League campaign.

Capable of playing on either flank, the versatile full-back has operated on both the left and right side of defence so far this season, producing a string of solid displays.

It’s because of this that Aina has been voted by Forest supporters as Player of the Month for September, receiving 40% of the total vote.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Luton Town, Saturday, Aina hopes that Forest can build on recent performances and start to climb the table ahead.

The Reds have found themselves on the end of defeats away from home to Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City in recent weeks.

But ahead of Forest’s return to The City Ground, Aina says that he and his teammates can take confidence from their recent performances.

    SETTLING DOWN

There is no doubt that Aina has settled down nicely considering the fact that his country mates Taiwo Awoniyi, and Emmanuel Dennis were in the team.

He said: “It’s been fun. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it so far. The staff, the players, the city itself, it’s been really good to me so far and long may it continue.

“I was the first to arrive this summer and it was fun, I had Taiwo and Emmanuel Dennis here who I know from Nigeria, I knew Morgan and Harry Toffolo too, so it was smooth sailing.

“The games have been tough, but I feel like for myself and the team, it’s good to see where we’re at. I feel like we haven’t done too badly against the bigger teams, it’s been a challenge but it’s been a good one.

“It shows the leaps and bounds the club have taken within just one season. It’s good to see we are competing and we do feel strong, so it’s good to have that feeling and hopefully we can have a strong season.

“It has lived up to expectations, but some of the boys have told me that I haven’t seen anything yet and that it gets even louder.

“I’m still looking forward to hear that. The fans are amazing here and I can’t wait to get playing in front of them again.

“I feel like we have to put a strong string of performances together, hopefully climb up the table and ultimately play well to get the results we need.

“If we do that, we can have a good season.”

The 27-year-old informed that every member of the team has a role to play in the team.

“First and foremost, everyone’s key in the team and everyone’s got a role to play.

“There will be moments in the season where we’ll look to someone and we’ve got a few of them in our team, from Morgan, Callum, Anthony and Taiwo.
