  • Police arraign businessman for swindling farmer of N2m

    A businessman, Oladepo Jayeoba, 50, who the police accused of defrauding a farmer of N2 million, on Wednesday appeared in an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun.

    The police charged Jayeoba with fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct 31, at Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi said that the accused obtained N2 million from a farmer, Elugbaju Taiwo with a promise to supply him cocoa seeds.

    He said that the accused converted the sum to his personal use.

    According to him, the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 383, 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    After arraignment, defense counsel, Lere Ayinde, pleaded with the court to admit his client to bail on the most liberal terms.

    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode, granted the prayers and and admitted the accused to bail in the sum of one million with two sureties in like sum.

    Ijiyode ordered that sureties must swear to an affidavit of means, reside within the court jurisdiction and provide substantial sureties.

    He also ordered that one of the sureties must not be below GL06.

    Ijiyode adjourned the case until Feb 4, 2019.

    Court remands man over assault of special marshals

    An Osun Magistrates’  Court sitting in Ile-Ife  on Wednesday  remanded  one Adegoke Adekanmi, 36, in prison for alleged obstruction and assault.

    The accused was arraigned on a  five-count charge of attempting  to commit felony, obstruction, assault, slapping and kidnapping of  special marshals.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offences  on Nov. 14 at  about 8:35 am at  OAUTHC area of  Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi said  the accused assaulted two special marshals, Omopo Idowu and Oderinde Zacheus,  by slapping them  while performing  their lawful duties.

    He further said  that the accused  attempted to kidnap the duo.

    The prosecutor also said the accused obstructed one police officer, Tajudeen Agbaje,  attached to “A” Division in  Ile-Ife by forcing him into  his car while performing his lawful duty.
    The offences, he said,  contravened Sections 356 (2) and 509 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The defence counsel, Mr Samuel Judge, who applied for the bail of his client, pledged to produce reliable sureties.

    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode, however, rejected  the oral bail  application and asked  defence counsel to produce a written application.

    Ijiyode  ordered the remand of the accused at  Ile-Ife prison pending the consideration of his bail application.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till  Dec.  22  for hearing of the bail application.

    Court remands three persons over possession of cannabis sativa

    An Osun Magistrates’ Court in Ile-Ife on Wednesday remanded Maria Oladunjoye, Taoreed Olajiire and Blessing Ebuka in prison over alleged possession of  cannabis sativa popularly known as Indian hemp.

    Oladunjoye, 48, Olajide, 38 and Ebuka, 20, are facing two-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of Indian hemp, to which they pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Olalekan Ijiyode, ordered that the defendants be remanded at Ilesa prison, pending hearing on their bail application.

    He asked the Defence Counsel, Ben Adirieje, to make written application for the bail and adjourned the case until Dec. 18 for mention.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sunday Osanyintuyi, had told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Nov. 23 at Seventh Day Adventist Hospital Area in Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi said the three conspired to commit felony and unlawfully had lndian hemp with them.

    He added that the defendants were caught with a bus-full of the substance suspected to be Indian hemp, which was unlawfully obtained.

    According to him, the offence contravenes sections 430 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

    Court remands two in prison over N1.1m land fraud

    An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of two accused persons, Jelili Oladejo, 30, and Oladejo Saheed, 55, in prison custody over alleged N1.1 million land fraud.

    Oladejo and Saheed of no fixed residential address are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and false pretence, to which they pleaded “not guilty”.

    The Magistrate, Mr Olalekan Ijiyode, gave the order pending the consideration of an application by the Defence Counsel, Mr Ben Adirieje, to grant them bail.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on June 27, 2016, at about 11.30 p.m. at Guarantee Trust Bank, located at Lagere, Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi said that the defendants conspired to obtain N1.1 million from one Segun Ojuade under false pretence to sell one acre of land to the plaintiff.

    According to him, the acre of land consisted of six plots at Keaje Family Layout on  Ife/Ibadan Expressway which they failed fail to provide to him.

    The prosecutor said that the accused fraudulently converted the N1.1 million to their personal use without the consent of the plaintiff.

    He said that the offence contravened sections 383, 390 (9), 418, 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The case was adjourned until Nov. 17 for hearing.

    Court remands teenager over burglary, stealing

    An Osun Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in Ile-Ife remanded a teenager in prison over alleged housebreaking and stealing.

    The accused, Adebayo Idowu, 19, pleaded not guilty to a three-count-charge of conspiracy, forceful entrance and stealing.

    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode, refused the oral bail application by Mr Ben Adiereje, the defence counsel.

    Ijiyode told the counsel to come with written application for the bail of his client on Sept. 9.

    The magistrate said that the accused should be remanded in prison pending the ruling on the bail application.

    Adiereje had pleaded for the bail of his client in the most liberal term, saying that he would not jump bail.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP. Matthew Imepreve, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 5, 2017 around 2:00 a.m at Ayelabowo Street, Ile-Ife, in Osun.

    Imepreve alleged that the accused conspired with others now at large to commit the offence.

    He told the court that the accused allegedly broke into the apartment of the complainant, Adebola Salawu and stole home theatre, standing fan, stabiliser and GOTV decoder.

    The prosecutor said that the accused also stole other household items valued at N52, 000.

    Court remands eight men for cult membership

    An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, ordered that eight men, be remanded in Ile-Ife prison custody for allegedly belonging to a proscribed group, Eiye confraternity.

    The suspects are: Femi Owotade, (a.k.a Water), 30; Omisope Ismail, 25; Elujulo Olamilekan, 25; Olatunbosun Oyeyemi, 20; Kolawole Makinde, 28; Adedoja Ademola, 27; Ademola Adedayo, 23 and Oladipupo Waheed, 19.

    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode, who gave the ruling, asked the counsel to the accused, Messrs Niyi Akole and Ben Adiereje to come with a written application for their bail.

    Ijiyode ordered that the accused be kept behind bars pending the advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    He said that his court lacked jurisdiction to try the accused and they would be arraigned in a proper court of law.

    The eight suspects are facing a three-count-charge of conspiracy, engaging in secret cult society and possession of dangerous items.

    The Police Prosecutor, Insp Christian Olajide, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 12 around 2:30 p.m. at Ita-Olopo House, Igbotapa Area, Ile-Ife.

    Olajide said that the accused conspired among themselves to commit felony to wit: being members of an unlawful society.

    He said the accused engaged in an unlawful society, named “Eiye Secret Cult confraternity”.

    The prosecutor said that among the dangerous items found on the accused at the point of their arrest included: UTC axes, charms, cutlasses, among others, which they could not give a satisfactory account.

    The offence, he said, was contrary to and punishable under Sections 64 (a), (b), 430 and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

    The case was adjourned to Aug 31.

    Two men in court for stealing goats

    Two men – Olaide Adebori, 45, and Sunday Omisakin, 42, were on Tuesday arraigned in an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court, in Osun, for allegedly stealing a she-goat and its kids.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on June 1, 2017, around 12:00 noon at Olurin Street, Ile-Ife.

    He said that the accused persons were in possession of the she-goat and its kids, reasonably suspected to have been stolen.

    The prosecutor also said that the accused persons conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breached of peace.

    According to him, the offence was contrary to and punishable under Sections 249 (d), 383, 430 and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The two defendants denied committing the offence.

    The defence Counsel, Mr Samuel Judge, applied for the bail of the defendant in most liberal terms.

    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Ijiyode said that the surety, who must swear to affidavit of means, should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

    The case was adjourned until June 28, for hearing.

  • Man arraigned for stealing truck

    An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Tuesday remanded in prison 45-year-old Sunday Fagbemi , who allegedly stole a truck worth N12 million pending when his bail application would be considered.

    The accused is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and damage to property.

    Police Prosecutor Emmanuel Abdullahi told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 9 at Trailer Park, Ondo Road, Ile-Ife.

    Abdullahi said the accused conspired with others to steal the trailer with registration no. LSD 794 NX valued at N12 million, property of Global Concept Nigeria Ltd.

    According to him, the accused also stole a trailer tyre valued at N150, 000 and also damaged the ignition.

    The offences contravened Sections 383, 390 (9), 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun 2003.

    The Magistrate, Mr. Olalekan Ijiyode, said the accused should be remanded in Ile-Ife Prison until June 21 for ruling on the bail application.

    An Ile-Ife Magistrate’s Court in Osun on Wednesday granted N100, 000 bail to each of three accused persons charged with assault and stealing of oranges.

  • Two docked over N5.7m fraud

    Two men were on Wednesday arraigned in an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court, Osun, over alleged N5.7 million fraud.
    The defendants- Adeyemi Oyewole, 46, and Awobode Owojori, 35, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and fraud.
    The prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused persons committed the offences sometimes in March, 2017 at Arubidi Area of Ile-Ife.

    He alleged that the defendants obtained N5.7 million from one Randy Mucus, under false pretence of preparing protection charm for the complainant..
    The prosecutor told the court that the accused persons rather converted the said money to their own use.
    He said that the offences contravened Sections 383, 390 (9), 419 and 515 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.
    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
    Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode, granted both accused persons bail in the sum of N100, 000, each, with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case until June 5, for hearing.
