  • FIFA ranking: Eagles climbs 6 places to 61st

The two victories over Mali and Luxembourg in an international friendly may have rubbed off positively on the fortune of Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the June ranking of the world football governing body- FIFA as the former African champion climbs six places to be ranked 61st in the world.

Within five days, a young Eagles’ team handled by local coaches led by Salisu Yusuf defeated Mali 1-0 in France and went ahead to pound Luxembourg 3-1 in front of the home fans.

However, the Eagles are still out of the top five teams in Africa while their rising this month has moved them to 12th place in the continent.

The three-time African champions could still face a very difficult 2018 World Cup qualifying group even after the latest FIFA rankings as they will be missing out from the seedings for the qualifying round of the 2018 World Cup.

It is touted that the top five teams in the continent – Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal and Egypt – will enjoy a better chance of making Pot A of the draws holding on June 24 in Cairo, Egypt. FIFA is expected to announce the lucky five top seeds next week.
Having crashed out of AFCON 2017, Nigeria will be seeking to qualify for a sixth World Cup when the qualifying series for Russia 2018 kick off in October.
The 20 African teams still in contention for the World Cup will be drawn into five groups of four teams each with winner of each group catching the flight to Russia in 2018.

  • Quadri to lose points in latest ITTF World Rating

Quadri to lose points in latest ITTF World Rating

With a few days to the release of the latest world ranking by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), there are indications that Aruna Quadri may drop points.

The number seeded men’s single for the 2016 ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open will have 25 points deducted from his points having been registered for the tournament before the final draw on May 17.

In May, Quadri who has not been active in the last two months dropped from 29 to 32 and with this development, he might be dropping down the ladder for his absence at the ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open.

However, the 2014 ITTF Star player has pleaded with his fans over his absence in Lagos. “I am using this medium to appeal to all my fans and particularly the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and its President, Wahid Oshodi for my inability to feature in this year’s Nigeria Open. My mind was with the tournament throughout, but my club needed me as we were on the verge of going into relegation. We were four players in the team and one of my teammates was injured and for us to play in any league match we have to be a three-man team and this was what prevented me from coming to Lagos,” he said.

“But despite this, I want to promise my fans that I will continue to represent my country and make my nation proud. I have started my personal preparation for the Olympics and I hope I can repay their trust with good performance at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil,” he added.

  • More Nigerians to make ITTF ranking list

With the performance of some Nigerian players in the last ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open may aided the entrance of the players into the latest world ranking to be released by the world table tennis ruling body this week.

Top among the Nigerian players that his name will be inked on the list is Tobi Falana who, beyond all odds, made it to the last 16 of the men’s singles as a qualifier after causing an upset in the main draw (round of 32).

To be among the top 16 elite stars in the men’s singles event, Falana bundled out number 15 seed, Ghana’s Felix Lartey 9-11,5-11,11-8,17-15,11-9,13-11 (4-2).

Falana however, met his Waterloo against the eventual champion, Finland’s Benedek Olah but the young Nigerian told NationSport, “I think this is the best achievement for me especially making it to the last 16 of an ITTF World Tour. I am hoping that I can make the world ranking list this year,” he said.

Also, Ahmed Bello, who after battling from the preliminary to make it to the main draw had an easy ride to the main last 16 after walking over Morocco’s Mounaim Tirselt.

There are indications that the winner of the 2016 ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open, Benedek Olah will move up the ranking table.

Listed at no. 149 on the Men’s World Rankings at the start of the year in January, Benedek Olah is presently named at a career high figure of no. 74 and is now surely destined to climb higher.

ITTF Open: Foreign players eager to return for 2017 edition

After having nice time while taking part in the 2016 ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open, some of the foreigners that featured in the five-day tournament say they would be willing to return to Lagos come 2017.

From women singles champion, Portugal’s Jieni Shao to men singles winner, Finland’s Benedek Olah,   the atmosphere at the competition was friendly enough to entice players to return.

“I think I really enjoyed myself in Lagos. I think the fans were unique and I really feel them whenever I am playing. This is not common across the world as the fans were always supporting us. I hope to come back because I really played very well particularly the quarterfinal and semifinal matches against Nigeria’s Bode Abiodun and Segun Toriola. They were my toughest opponents because they played with a lot of spin with different kind of style.

He added: “My game is now on another level because I was consistent in this tournament and this paid off for me to win my first World Tour title. I have a good feeling throughout the tournament and I hope to be back next year. I did not regret being invited by Aruna Quadri and I think it is a god atmosphere for the players and I must also commend the organisers for a good job.

Russia’s Irina Ermakova believes her third visit to Nigeria was fruitful just as she hopes to return again in 2016. “Being my third time in Lagos, I think winning gold after third attempt was exciting. It was not an easy match but my teammate really helped a lot. I think the unity between us really was helpful. I am happy and I look forward to returning to Lagos. The fans were awesome and they were very supportive of all the players as well as the warmness of the Nigeria people,” the Russian said.

  • “I want to inspire young athletes with my achievements”

“I want to inspire young athletes with my achievements”

History is indeed in the making for Nigeria at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil as table tennis will put the country on the world and continent maps when Segun Toriola takes part in his seventh Olympic Games as the first African to achieve such feat.

In the history of Nigerian sports, Toriola remains one of the most successful athletes that had won series of laurels for Nigeria at continental and Commonwealth levels. His records as the most decorated athlete in Africa is unequaled while his commitment to the business of Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized.

The 41 year-old was a very sad man on Wednesday when he said that despite all his efforts to put Nigeria on global map, there has not been any national recognition for his efforts but the erstwhile African king believes his achievement is sports should serve as inspiration for upcoming athletes.

When Segun Toriola joined the league on athletes listed among the seventh heaven in table tennis, it was celebrated across the globe by current and ex-table tennis stars. But despite several accolades that greeted his qualification for a seventh consecutive Olympic Game, there has not been any national recognition for the African legend.

A nation that has conferred national honours on football players that won a cadet competition is yet to deem it fit to recognise the efforts of an athlete that has given more than three decades to serve his fatherland with a lot of international medals to show for it.

In the midst of this, a saddened Toriola said: “It is sad that my country has not deemed it fit to recognise my efforts.  I know that if I had been a Briton, I should have been conferred with a national honour by the Queen of England. I think this is not too good for the country as this might discourage upcoming athletes. But I most times take solace in the fact that the country gave me the platform to enter into the annals of history,” he lamented.

Segun-ToriolaIn Africa, Toriola remains a role model for athletes as his comportment as well as commitment to the Nigeria project cannot be questioned. His unassuming disposition towards wearing the colours of Nigeria has endeared him to the hearts of many across the globe.

Recalling how his journey to stardom at the Olympic Games, Toriola said: “I could still recollect my first appearance at the Olympic games in Barcelona 1992 where I was the youngest member of Nigeria table tennis team that has greats like Atanda Musa and Yomi Bankole. I qualified for the doubles event while Musa and Bankole played in the singles. In those days, the qualification system for the Olympics was a bit harder and I managed to make the cut for Africa. It was a moment I will never forget particularly playing at the biggest stage alongside some of my idols in the sport.”

For Toriola, qualifying for the Olympics is the peak in the career of every athlete and he emphasized that the Olympics is the biggest platform for athletes to showcase their talents to the whole world.

“I am so surprised when I hear people asking about what have I won at the Olympics? But they must realise that going to the Olympics never comes on a platter of gold as one has to qualify to be at the Olympics. Some of the world’s successful athletes never compete at the Olympics. So for me playing at the seventh Olympics was not something I envisaged when I went to my first Olympics. But what kept the dream ignited in me was the fact that I wanted to emulate some of my idols in the sport.

“I used to look up to Atanda and Yomi because they were the legends of the game.  Apart from playing along them in major competitions, they were great players that most of us wanted to emulate as I used to sleep with their pictures while I follow across the world. So for me I wanted to be like these great stars, and this was what spurred me on in the sport.”

In Rio, the former African champion believes nothing is possible as every participant has an equal chance to make it to the podium based on the new playing format been applied by ITTF.

“I believe that we have a chance to do something better in Rio because every country has the chance to make it to the podium. If countries like England can claimed bronze at the World Championship, nothing stops us to doing more in Brazil. In Rio I want to make my country proud and we can do well with the present form of Aruna Quadri, who has established himself as one of the world’s most respected table tennis players,” he added.

For him, playing at the Olympic Games is reserved for the best. “People should also realise that Olympics is for the best in the world. Nigeria should realise that any athlete that makes it to the Olympics should be commended, as not many great athletes feature at the Olympics.”

For his three decades service to Nigeria, Toriola has never been involved in controversy or scandal as his patriotism overrides any other thing. On countless occasions, he has spent his hard-earned resources to represent Nigeria in major competitions when he plied his trade in Italy, Belgium while making France has his second home.

For Toriola, all his achievements in table tennis should be able to inspire the upcoming players to aim high in life. “I must confess that I want young players to see my achievements in sports as an inspiration for them to aim for the top in their sports. I still want to be around table tennis so that I can help the younger players but Rio will surely be my last Olympic Games.”

  • Toriola’s comeback thrills fans at ITTF premier lotto Nigeria open

That Segun Toriola is still relevant to table tennis in Nigeria and Africa became obvious yesterday when the former African champion rallied from behind to beat Portugal’s Diogo Carvalho 4-3 in the main draw of the ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open.

From the start of the match, it was as if the young Portuguese wanted to break the heart of the home fans with his superb style of play which most times confused Toriola.

The Portuguese took charge of the encounter but like an old warlord that never die, Toriola threw the hall into frenzy when he rallied to level up at 2-2 and took charge of the game. But the Portuguese again won the fifth game but Toriola was in the driving seat from the sixth game with two wins to claim a 4-3 victory.

A disappointed Carvalho said: “When the match was 2-2 I was still confidence that I can win but I discovered that he changed his service and this made it difficult for me. I think he was more experienced than me and this showed in the match. Playing against Toriola in such manner has really increased my confidence. It is painful I lost the match but for me I am satisfied with my performance in the tournament.”

Also yesterday, Bode Abiodun advanced to the last 16 with a 4-2 win over Wale Fagbamila while Ojo Onaolapo was shown the exit by Portugal’s ZHAO Tianming with a 4-0 bashing.

The star player of the day was Tobi Falana who edged seeded Ghanaian, Felix Lartey with a 4-2 win.

The tournament continues today with crucial matches expected to be played in the U-21, doubles and singles events

ITTF Nigeria Open: Oshonaike optimistic as doubles begins

Former African champion, Olufunke Oshonaike yesterday expressed optimism that Nigerian players will make it to the podium as the doubles event of ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open begins today at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Oshonaike, a semifinalist at the 2015 edition told NationSport that with the preparation coupled with the quality of play, there are chances for the host country to make it to the podium in the men and women’s event.

“I am sure we can win the title this year because our players are in top shape and I can wait to see a Nigerian lifting the trophy this year. We deserve to win the titles because our players work harder this year. They are all eager to win the tournament this year,” she said.

With the preliminary matches in the singles of men and U-21 entering final round today, all eyes will be on the doubles event as most of the top seeded players will be in action today for a place in the last eight of the event.

ITTF Nigeria Open: It’s tougher to win this year – Quadri admits

Having played in his first final of the annual ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open in 2015, Aruna Quadri admitted that despite the absence of three-time winner, Egypt’s Omar Assar, clinching the title might be a bit tougher this year.

The 2014 ITTF Star Player told NationSport from his base in Portugal that the presence of top players from Europe would make it more competitive for all participants, adding that ranking does not win matches.

“I must admit that the level of play this year will for sure improve considering the quality of players on the entry list. It’s going to be more difficult this year and I am hoping to be in my best form in order to make my country and my fans proud at home,” he admitted.

The 2016 African champion, however, said the absence of the Egyptian superstar would not take away the glamour and colour of the tournament, adding that his presence would have improved the tournament’s standard.

“I don’t think that the absence of Omar Assar will take away the shine off the competition rather the presence of top players from Europe will bring more glamour and make it more competitive this year. I must also say that it will be rather hard to win the title this year, unlike in the past that the tournament was dominated by African players,” he said.

He enthused: “My target is to do so much better than last year, but it is not going to be easy at all because we are having more better European players on the list and some Asian players as well and South American players.”

Apart from the competitive nature of the championship this year, the status of the tournament has been raised with the quality of players competing this year and this Quadri believes would help the local players. “The presence of more European players this time around means that ITTF Premier Lotto Nigeria Open is now gaining ground and getting more popular than before as more players around the world are also showing interest from the list of participants,” he said.

A confident Quadri however, said, “Yes of course, it is very possible to win the title this time around but it is not going to be an easy task. It is going to be a tough tournament for all and I pray God to be on my side from the beginning to the end.”
