    Enoh hails Lawal, Olarinoye on weightlifting feats  in Cairo

    Sports Minister, John Enoh has hailed  the performance of two Nigeria’s Weightlifters Rafiatu Folasade Lawal and Adijat Olarinoye for their superlative top two finish at the ongoing 2024 African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt.

    The duo won three gold and three silver medals at the competition in their 59kg weight class to boost their qualification chances for the Olympic Games in Paris, France later in the year.

    “I heartily congratulate the duo of Nigeria’s weightlifters, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal and Adijat Adenike Olarinoye on their respective victories at the ongoing 2024 Africa senior weightlifting championship in Egypt, claiming six medals combined.

    “Competing in the 59kg women’s category, Lawal and Adijat dominated the category as they carted away the top prizes in Day 1 of the championship which also serves as Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier.”

    Senator Enoh opined that the country’s President, Bola Tinubu has also expressed his delight at the display of both athletes and charged the remaining weightlifters to work towards claiming more medals for Nigeria in Egypt.

    “The President,  His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians, are glad and so proud of you both,” he added.

    Lagos’ Olarinoye grabs three weightlifting gold

    Florence Olarinoye showed why her experience in the 45kg women’s class at the 2022 National Sports Festival NSF counted as she scooped all the three gold medals for team Lagos on Day Two  of the ongoing National Youth Games, NYG 49kg female class in weightlifting event in Asaba on Sunday.

    Aged just 13, the younger sister to Adenike Adijat Olarinoye – Africa and Commonwealth Champion – Florence showed class and vision as she out-lifted her opponents to secure the all-important three gold medals for her state.

    Florence at 12 years, won bronze in 45kg class at the 2022 National Sports Festival, NSF also in Asaba in December last year.

    She lifted 56kg in snatch and had an impressive 72kg lift in clean and jerk totalling 128kg to win the medals.

    Nigeria’s Capital, the FCT collected all the silver medals after Chidirim Marvellous Ibeh competing for the Green and White team, lifted 53kg in snatch, 67kg clean and jerk and 120kg in total.

    Bayelsa State went home with all the three bronze medals courtesy of Christianah Adefemi heroics. She lifted 48kg in snatch, 65 in clean and jerk and 104kg in total to place 3rd   on the podium.

    The weightlifting event continues  today with the 55kg male class taking centre stage at the Hall Three of  the  Stephen Keshi Stadium.
