    • ‘My friend of 40 years gone’

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed sadness over the passing of labour activist, Abiodun Aremu.

Olwepo-Hashim said he and the late Aremu were good friends for 40 years.

In a tribute to the late labour activist, Olawepo-Hashim wrote: “Aremson (as we called him) and I met in 1986 as young activists. I was in the School of Basic Studies and Aremu in the school of Technology, both Campuses of the College of Technology, Ilorin, with the third college being the School of Management and Vocational.

“Aremu and I belonged to the Youths Thinkers’ Club, a group of patriotic young thinkers committed to a better Nigeria and the Liberation of our Fatherland from underdevelopment. We were also joint members of the Patriotic Liberation Movement, a working-class and peasantry-focused left group with leading figures like M. Yaqub (later Rotimi Obadofin), Femi Ahmed, Didi Adodo, Rev. Father Ofei, Bona Chizea, Alex Ayatollah, Sunday Ewen, etc.

“Ilorin, where Aremson cut his activist political teeth, like I, was an idealogical melting pot in the mid-‘80s. At the Youth and Students’ fronts were actors like Shola Olorunuomi, now a University Professor; Denja Yaq, Lanre Fulani, Mathew Keyi, Hamzat Ibn Suleman, etc. In the media were Dapo Olorunyomi, Lanre Kawu (Modibo Kawu Ladi Abdul Azeez) who eventually became Dapo Olorunyomi’s wife, etc, etc.

“A tribute to Aremson’s unwavering commitment to the working people of Nigeria and the cause of a better Nigeria cannot leave out the influence of the family of patriots that produced him and ideologically birthed some of us.

“Aremu and I had a closer bond; we were very passionate about change. Some people say every opportunity to confront the status quo was like a birthday ceremony for Aremu and I. Some more uncharitable critics called us ‘Petty bourgeois exhibitionists’.

“In May 1986, Aremu, as President of Students’ Union, led protesting students of the School of Technology, and I led thousands of students from the School of Basic Studies to protest the killing of students at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in what became the ‘Ango Must Go’ protest. We were heading to the rendezvous at the NTA Ilorin, where we had planned to make a broadcast, when we were confronted by a large detachment of mobile riot policemen at the Ministry of Agriculture in Ilorin. The government declared a curfew, but we managed to get together later at my grandmother’s place to a plate of mama’s amala and ewedu soup.

“Aremson and I kept close contact and visited each other regularly over the past four decades.

“He recently survived a stroke, but fell to the cruel assault of a hit-and-run driver.

“Why was Aremu crossing the road all by himself? He had a car, which he seldom used because the road to his house was simply impassable, the last time I visited. Most residents of the community simply just park their cars.

“Aremu built his house amongst the poor even though I won’t consider him poor: he chose by himself what he did, not because he lacked better options.

“His choice was made easy for him by the understanding and cooperation of his loyal wife who must now bear the greatest weight of this loss.

“Aremson was an internationalist, particularly a friend of Cuba and a promoter of the Legacy of Amicar Cabral.

“We were ideologically bonded until his death. Though we chose different paths as we grew up, he, a professional revolutionary, I chose entrepreneurship and Mass Democratic Politics, but our cord of commitment to a better Nigeria remained unbroken.

“A rare patriot has fallen, a combatant for the cause of the poor is gone, my friend has become the pool of water after the rain that passes by the street, never to return home again. Adieu, great one!”

Olawepo-Hashim accuses APC of using ex-wife against his presidential bid

Former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has accused some All Progressives Congress (APC) members of sponsoring what he called renewed allegations against him through his estranged wife.

He described the development as part of a smear campaign to discredit him ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement, Olawepo-Hashim alleged that his ex-wife’s recent claims in the media were orchestrated by those he called remnants of the same political handlers who allegedly plotted to stop his 2019 presidential bid.

He said: “She had been recruited by elements around (the late President Muhammadu) Buhari in the UK High Commission and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA). Apart from other sinister things they did, they tried to frame me up for funding terrorism. I was questioned in the UK and released when no evidence was found. She was the one who gave the information to the UK authorities.”

The businessman-turned-politician alleged that the same group seized two of his oil assets during the period, forcing him into a prolonged legal battle.

He recalled that in November 2020, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Taiwo Taiwo, restored the Hely Creek and Abigborodo marginal oil fields to his company, Transnational Energy Limited (TEL), after ruling that the government’s revocation of the fields was illegal. The court also awarded $20 million in damages against the federal institutions involved.

Olawepo-Hashim claimed that his ex-wife’s legal battle in the UK was part of that broader scheme, adding that she was “recruited by the then Deputy Director-General of the NIA, Air Force General Bello, who is her in-law”.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart alleged that his estranged wife obtained an undefended divorce judgment in England in which she was awarded £18 million (about N36 billion), but the judgment was later annulled by a Nigerian court since their marriage was conducted under Nigerian law.

“APC handlers funded her with millions of dollars, nominating her for several foreign grants for female entrepreneurs and start-up businesses. My lawyers have written to her several times to provide account details for the children’s upkeep, but she refused because she wants £18 million, not money for their welfare,” he said.

The former presidential candidate added that his ex-wife had denied his family access to their children, describing her as “a professional blackmailer and social climber who has made plenty of money from that trade”.

Olawepo-Hashim said the revival of her story was politically motivated, stressing: “Now that the 2027 campaign has started, the same APC team has picked her up again, pushing her story in the media.”

He dismissed reports of a new court order directing one of his companies to pay ₦300 million.

The PDP stalwart described the claim as “an invention of an APC night court”.

According to him, no such process was ever served on his legal team.

“This is an act of desperation on their part, and it shows our message is biting them. Picking up stories from bitter women against opposition figures will not save the APC from imminent defeat in 2027.

“Tales like this did not stop President Trump in America; they won’t stop us here either, by the grace of God,” Olawepo-Hashim added.

    2027: Southwest group backs Olawepo-Hashim

Southwest chapter of Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement has said Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim is its preferred presidential aspirant on platform of Peoples Democratic Party  ahead of 2027 general election.

The support group said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s overtures to the Yoruba people “carry little weight”.

Atiku, member of African Democratic Congress, assured the Yoruba their interests would be central to his administration if he were elected president.

Atiku cited his marital ties and relationships with the region.

He said Southwest is his “extended family”, saying fear of Fulani dominance is “baseless”.

Reacting yesterday in Osogbo, Osun State, Southwest Coordinator, Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, dismissed Atiku’s remarks as sentimental rhetoric that does not address the needs of the Yoruba or those of other Nigerians.

“Southwest is not swayed by mere words or emotional claims. Our people always demand leadership rooted in integrity, competence, and vision. That is why we stand with Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim,” Olaniyi said.

He noted that Olawepo-Hashim is more than a politician seeking office; he is a democrat, a successful entrepreneur with global exposure, and a bridge builder capable of uniting both the North and South.

Olaniyi said his Yoruba roots and national acceptability make him qualified to embody the region’s values of justice, equity, and innovation, while also responding to national aspirations.

He added: “What more, Dr. Olawepo-Hashim is running on the platform of PDP, a platform bigger than ADC.”

The coordinator contrasted Olawepo-Hashim with Atiku, describing the former Vice President as a representation of the “old order” in Nigerian politics.

A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in the Northwest, Aminu Bala Wudilawa, has said a former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, is the only contender with the competence, credibility, and national spread to win votes across the North and the South in 2027.

Wudilawa, who doubles as the North West Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard, spoke at a political engagement in Kano.

The PDP chieftain noted that Nigeria needs a unifier with the capacity to transcend ethnic and regional divides.

“Nigeria desperately needs a political leader who is competent, credible, and capable of breaking the political divide between the North and the South. Among all the presidential hopefuls being touted today, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim clearly stands out,” he said.

Wudilawa described Olawepo-Hashim as a natural bridge-builder, stressing that with both Hausa and Yoruba heritage, he represents the face of national unity.

He added that beyond politics, Olawepo-Hashim is a successful entrepreneur, a tested crusader for democracy, and an advocate of good governance.

Wudilawa also dismissed zoning as “a backward and unconstitutional arrangement,” warning that it must not deprive Nigerians of the chance to elect a leader with the pedigree to deliver genuine transformation.

He urged Nigerians across party and regional lines to rally behind Olawepo-Hashim, insisting he is the bridge between regions, religions, and generations that the country urgently needs.

peoples  Democratic Party stalwart, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has unfolded plans to strengthen Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement in Southwest.

At a gathering in Osogbo, Osun State, its leaders from the 31 councils, executives, and youths declared support for his presidential ambition on the platform of PDP.

Chief of Staff, Kamaldeen Adebayo, representing him, said: “Olawepo-Hashim’s mission is to restore dignity, justice, and accountability to governance. It is time to take back Nigeria,” Adebayo said.

National Coordinator, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, likened Olawepo-Hashim to a Moses for Nigeria’s troubled times.

He said: “Olawepo-Hashim will lead the crusade. He is free from corruption, full of ideas, tested, and bold enough to crush APC.”

Southwest Coordinator, Abass Olaniyi, said: “From Osun, this movement will spread like a wildfire in Southwest. The people are hungry for integrity, principle, and vision, and Olawepo-Hashim is the answer.”

The movement, gaining traction in Lagos, Oyo, Ekiti, and Ondo, welcomed PDP’s decision to throw open its presidential ticket, insisting Olawepo-Hashim has a straight road to Aso Rock.

Osun Coordinator, Tajudeen Hassan, told ward and council coordinators: “Take the gospel of Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim to every street, every household, every corner of Osun. Nobody must be left behind.’’

    • State chair seeks internal coalition for party’s victory

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, is enjoying growing goodwill in Kaduna State, the heartbeat of northern politics.

State Chairman, Edward Masha, said this while hosting members of Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim Solidarity Movement (GOH-Front) at the party’s state secretariat in Kaduna.

He noted that only a coalition led by the party can unseat All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

The group was at the secretariat to press for reversal of PDP’s zoning of its presidential ticket to South.

Addressing reporters after receiving the group’s petition, Masha said while alliances were welcome, only PDP had the spread and structure to pose a serious challenge to APC.

“Coalitions are welcome, but no party has structures than PDP. Take it or leave it, PDP is the only party that can provide that kind of structure,” he said.

The party chair claimed Nigerians were disillusioned with APC after years of hardship, adding the ruling party’s popularity had waned nationwide.

“Any Nigerian knows the people are not happy with this system. We were told to be patient with (former President Muhammadu) Buhari for eight years. Now, the same people are telling us to be patient again under Tinubu. No Nigerian wants to hear APC’s name,” Masha said.

According to him, families can no longer feed properly or afford school fees, stressing that voters would punish APC at the polls.

“Today, how many Nigerians can feed themselves, even twice daily? Look at the prices in the market today, compared to two years ago. The economy is bad; the cost of living is high. Nigerians will not reward APC with another term,” he added.

Masha predicted PDP’s convention on November 15 and 16 would be a watershed moment that would attract returnees and re-energise it ahead of 2027.

“When credible leaders emerge after the convention, you will see more permutations. Those who left the PDP will return, and even some from the ruling party will come back. Once that happens, no one will stop it,” Masha said.

Commenting on the party’s NEC’s decision to zone the presidential ticket to South, Masha reiterated that zoning did not preclude any aspirant from contesting.

“That is NEC’s decision; I cannot go against it. But it was also said zoning does not preclude anyone who wants to contest. So, the field is open for anyone with capacity and interest,” he added.

State Coordinator of GOH-Front, Aliyu Mohammed (Achili), argued that restricting the ticket to South could weaken PDP’s chances against APC.

“The presidential ticket should be left open to every loyal Nigerian of this party capable of contesting. That is the only way PDP will be stronger,” he said.

Mohammed stressed that PDP must focus on exploiting APC’s weaknesses rather than limiting its options.

“We shouldn’t think like them. We must look at their loopholes and take back our mandate. That is why we appeal for a reversal.”

He said the petition was received by the state chair, and would be sent to the leadership.

Olawepo-Hashim’s message of inclusivity and renewal was resonating in Kaduna,. His grassroots appeal is gaining momentum among stakeholders.

2027: ‘PDP’s open ticket confirms Olawepo-Hashim’s position on zoning’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally aligned with the long-held position of technocrat and politician, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, by declaring that its zoning arrangement will not prevent aspirants from other regions from contesting the presidential ticket in 2027.

PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, spoke on Arise Television’s “Morning Show”, stressing that while zoning remains an important tool for equity, it cannot override the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees all citizens the right to seek elective office.

“Even if we zone our presidential candidate to the South, it will not stop anybody from any part of the country from showing interest. We cannot do things that will contradict the Constitution of Nigeria, which is the grand norm,” Ajibade explained.

The clarification mirrors the exact argument consistently advanced by the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, which had insisted that zoning must not be weaponized to exclude competent leaders, particularly from the North. According to the group, internal party arrangements must never supersede constitutional provisions.

Reacting to PDP’s pronouncement, the South West Coordinator of the movement, Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, described the development as “a major victory for democracy and a vindication of Dr. Hashim’s ideological politics,” adding that the party had chosen the path of fairness and inclusivity.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim, a global businessman turned politician, has been widely recognized for his issue-based politics and efforts at bridging Nigeria’s North-South divide. His rising popularity, especially in Osun State, where he is seen as more influential than President Bola Tinubu, has fueled growing speculation about his presidential ambition ahead of 2027.

With the PDP now aligning with his long-argued position, political observers believe Hashim is better positioned than ever to enter the race as a unifying figure capable of rallying Nigerians around a vision of competence, equity, and national renewal. With the PDP now aligning with his long-argued position, political observers believe Olawepo-Hashim is better positioned than ever to enter the race as a unifying figure capable of rallying Nigerians around a vision of competence, equity, and national renewal.

Olawepo-Hashim support groups: resurrecting PDP zoning regressive

    • ‘I will contest for president’

Support groups backing the presidential ambition of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim in 2027 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reiterated their opposition to zoning of the ticket.

According to them, “resurrecting zoning in the current political context is simply regressive.”

The groups, which cut across the country,  called on PDP leaders and other critical stakeholders to jettison zoning, describing it as unpopular among members and detrimental to party unity.

They maintained that the PDP can only remain strong and formidable enough to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if it prioritises inclusivity, fairness and merit over sectional arrangements.

Olawepo-Hashim, who has rejected zoning, reaffirmed his presidential ambition ahead of 2027.

He said in a statement that “zoning is unlawful,” adding: “I’ll contest for the presidency.”

Olawepo-Hashim dismissed the decision of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) on zoning as “illegal, unpopular and driven by selfish interests.”

He said: “That purported NEC decision was organised by a few people for selfish reasons. It is illegal and unpopular, as you can see from the deluge of protests from party members across the country.”

Olawepo-Hashim said the Electoral Act 2022 does not empower political parties to impose conditions such as zoning on aspirants beyond what is expressly provided in the Nigerian Constitution.

He noted that even the ruling APC avoided being trapped by zoning controversy, urging the PDP to correct what he described as “a grave error.”

The PDP zoning decision has continued to attract protests and criticisms from both Northern and Southern members of the party.

In Jos on Wednesday, thousands of supporters of Dr. Hashim stormed the PDP Secretariat demanding an open contest without exclusion.

The North Central Renaissance Movement, led by Professor Nghargbu K’tso, condemned the NEC decision as unjust to the North and, in particular, the North Central zone, which has never produced either a President or Vice President since Nigeria’s return to democracy.

One of the protesters argued that zoning is no longer defensible, pointing out that by 2027 the South would have produced presidents for 18 years while the North only 10.

“If before there was marginalisation of the South, no one can say so again by 2027. The South would have produced presidents for 18 years and the North for just 10. So who is marginalising who?” he asked.

In Kano, the Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard, Hon. Aminu Bala Wudilawa, told Freedom Radio that political trends in the North favour competence and capacity over sectional arrangements.

He alleged that only a few politicians eyeing the vice presidential slot were pushing for zoning to the South.

Olawepo-Hashim has consistently maintained that only a president chosen on the basis of competence and patriotism can fix Nigeria’s challenges.

He said the historical precedent of the PDP supports an open presidential contest.

Olawepo-Hashim added: “Even in 1999, when there was strong sentiment for accommodating the South-West due to the annulment of June 12, candidates from the North such as Alhaji Abubakar Rimi were not barred from contesting. “The same happened in 2002, when President Olusegun Obasanjo, then a sitting president, faced aspirants from the North like Chief Barnabas Gemade and Alhaji Abubakar Rimi.”

Hashim also cited Nigeria’s voting history as evidence that zoning is unnecessary.

“On June 12, 1993, the great people of Kano set ethnicity aside and voted for Chief M.K.O. Abiola against Alhaji Bashir Tofa, their kinsman. More recently, in the 2023 elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won in Northern Nigeria against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a Northern candidate, yet lost his home state Lagos to a candidate from another zone. This shows Nigerians are capable of making political decisions without bowing to ethnic or sectional instincts.”

Similar reactions have continued to pour in from sister groups, individuals and organisations within and outside Nigeria, warning the PDP of looming consequences that, they alleged, may jeopardise its chances of reclaiming power in 2027.

Supporters of former presidential candidate and frontline Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, have staged a protest at the party’s secretariat in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The aspirant’s supporters rejected the party’s zoning arrangement ahead of the 2027 general election.

The protesters, who were from Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, and Plateau states, marched on major streets of the Tin City, chanting solidarity songs.

They brandished banners and placards with various inscriptions, such as “Zoning is Injustice,” “North Central Must Be Heard,” and “Hashim 2027: A New Hope.”

•Party’s chapter rejects zoning of presidency to South

Members of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared their support for the presidential aspiration of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim ahead of the 2027 general election.

They gave the endorsement at a meeting attended by about 170 critical stakeholders of the party from various area councils. They included the local government, party ward chairmen, council chairmanship flag bearers, councillorship candidates, executive chairmen, secretaries of area councils and other stakeholders.

The PDP chieftains opposed the decision of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to zone the presidential ticket to the South.

They insisted that the decision was unacceptable and vowed to resist any attempt to stop their preferred candidate from the Northcentral region.

The stakeholders chanted “PDP!!! Power to the people!!!

They said the time had come for the Northcentral to produce Nigeria’s president, stressing that the region could no longer continue to play a subordinate role in national politics.

A party faithful, Soko Dobo, argued that the Northcentral was solidly behind Olawepo-Hashim and that efforts were ongoing to rally delegates across the country in his favour.

“The National Chairman himself said zoning does not mean others cannot contest. We in the Northcentral are fully behind Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim,” he said.

Another PDP stalwart, Dr. Ezekiel, said Olawepo-Hashim fully understands the challenges facing FCT residents.

He decried what he called the political marginalisation of FCT residents, stressing that despite having a population of over five million people spread across 800 communities, the territory still lacks a state structure, except for one senator and two members in the House of Representatives.

Responding, Olawepo-Hashim assured the PDP leaders and supporters that he would not disappoint them.

The presidential aspirant urged his supporters not to be discouraged by the NEC’s zoning decision, recalling that in 1999, the PDP allowed aspirants outside the favoured zone to contest.

“I have no intention of backing down. No party can close its doors to any Nigerian’s aspiration. The Northcentral has never produced a President or Vice President. It will be unfair to deny us the chance now,” he said.

Those present at the meeting adopted Olawepo-Hashim as the political leader of FCT.

In a motion moved by the State Chairman, Ismail Dogara, and seconded by the Executive Chairman of Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya, amidst singing by party youths and women, all pledging “where you go we go”. The National Vice Chairman, Northcentral Zone, Alhaji Abdulrhaman Mohammed Takushara, thanked the presidential aspirant for supporting the Northcentral.

He noted that the support would enable the zone to “galvanise the party for greater victories in the zone, by the Grace of God”.

Olawepo-Hashim urged the stakeholders to secure victory at the Area Council election scheduled for 2026.
