Key to Nigeria’s economic revival, by Olawepo-Hashim

A former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has outlined measures to expand and diversify the nation’s economy to achieve a minimum Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $4 trillion within a decade.

In a video now trending online, the businessman discusses his ambitious economic plan for Nigeria in 2018.

His economic suggestions, six years after they were projected, have attracted widespread admiration.

Those who have carefully watched the video have hailed Olawepo-Hashim for his deep understanding of the country’s economic challenges and his strategic vision for national growth.

The businessman stresses the need to reduce dependence on oil, leverage the country’s vast agricultural and solid mineral resources, and boost industrialisation.

“The key to Nigeria’s economic transformation is integrating agriculture and mineral resources with manufacturing. We must create an industrial base that contributes at least 40 per cent to GDP, which will in turn generate millions of well-paying jobs,” he says in the video.

Olawepo-Hashim stresses the need to improve Nigeria’s business environment by removing bottlenecks and institute policies that attract foreign and domestic investments.

According to him, major infrastructural investments, power sector reforms and policies will enhance the ease of doing business in the country.

The businessman has remained active in economic empowerment initiatives through his foundation, the Gbenga Hashim Foundation.

He disbursed N100 million in grants to small businesses in Kwara State in 2024, aiming to strengthen grassroots economic development.

Olawepo-Hashim lists how rising insecurity affects agricultural productivity in Nigeria

Nigeria’s agricultural sector has vast opportunities but it is limited by sundry issues of which the latest and most urgent are rising insecurity in farmlands across the country and climate change.

This was the submission of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a frontline politician and a former presidential candidate at the 27th annual convention and the 26th annual lecture series of the Alumni Association of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Ogun State last weekend.

Hashim added that according to the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, between 2022 and 2024, about half a million farmers were displaced, leading to a loss of over two trillion naira.

In the Middle Belt, he said, study further revealed a drop of over 70 per cent in farming activities leading to “shortages of maize crops, yam, among others.

According to him, the Institute of Peace Study revealed that in 2024, over 3,500 cases of kidnapping occurred in Nigeria.

“Apart from the above urgent issues, there are other issues that have fairly been around for a while undermining agricultural productivity and prosperity in the sector. They include poor Infrastructure and market access. Poor road networks hinder timely delivery of farm produce to markets. The African Development Bank (AFDB) notes that post-harvest losses in Nigeria exceed $9 billion annually, primarily due to inadequate transportation and storage.”

Hashim emphasised that alumni associations all over the world serve the same or similar purpose.   This he said, “they provide a platform for networking. They help alumni stay connected and maintain relationships with the alma mater. Alumni Association can support the development and advancement of their alma mater.”

On their roles to national developments, he submitted that alumni associations increasingly shape national development through funding, innovation, and strategic investments.

He, however, argued that only minorities target agriculture despite its critical economic role.

The Obafemi Awolowo University Agritech Fund disbursed ₦250 million in zero-interest loans to support 1,200 small holder farmers (Agricultural Funding Network Group [AFNG], 2024).

At the end of the event Dr. Hashim also received an award from the Association for his pedigree and commitment to progressive ideals.

The business mogul noted that the Christmas season represents joy, peace, hope, love, and goodwill.

He said these God-given attributes are needed in the country when Nigerians are confronted with diverse challenges of development.

Olawepo-Hashim said: “I celebrate with the Christian fold and enjoin all of us to remember the essence of Christmas. In a groundbreaking political development, former presidential candidate and renowned statesman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has brought together the chairmen of all area council chapters of the two major political parties in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)—the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Strengthen local accountability to make LG financial autonomy meaningful- Olawepo-Hashim

A former presidential candidate,  Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has hailed the Supreme Court judgement that bars the Federal  Government from sending local governments funds to states, but directly to the LGAs.

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, declared that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold onto funds meant for Local Government (LG) administrations.

In its lead judgement read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court observed that the refusal of state government on financial autonomy for local governments has gone on for over two decades.

However, Mr Olawepo-Hashim counseled that accountability structures including the Local Governments Legislative Assemblies, should be strengthened to ensure that adequate oversight exists to ensure that local government funds that would now go directly to the LGA’s are not subject to abuse, but truly benefits the citizens of the local council.

“We have a real opportunity for development to resume at the local government levels”, Olawepo-Hashim said, adding that “with the Supreme  Court landmark judgement, but only when we put up structures to ensure that these funds do not become the personal purse of certain individuals.”

The former presidential candidate added that “with these development, LGA’s should be able to pay attention to community policing, which is urgent and crucial in view of nationwide insecurity; intra ward and neighborhood public transportation; regular grading of local roads to ensure easy movement of farm produce ; primary and rural health services, children early education etc.”

According to him, “Let’s ensure the real people benefit from this judgement and that the judgement does not create new local emperors from the LGAs treasury.

“On the face of it, the Supreme Court’s judgement is a good step in the consolidation of Nigeria’s democracy.”

  • Olawepo-Hashim: Memorable 59th birthday in Barcelona

Olawepo-Hashim: Memorable 59th birthday in Barcelona

A worthwhile existence, robust health, industry, and great impact on society through philanthropy were what Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim was celebrating at the weekend on his birthday.

In Barcelona, Spain, where the eminent politician and former presidential candidate was attending a conference on energy, his associates marked his 59th birthday for him in a unique way, with a luncheon at a pristine club. There, a preserved personal letter of the global icon, the late President Nelson Mandela of South Africa, bought at an auction, was presented to him.

It was a surprise birthday launch, hosted at the ancient Circulo Delicio, the oldest private club in Spain established in 1847.

The letter invoked the memory of his contributions to the sage’s efforts at mobilising youths and children for a greater tomorrow in the former apartheid enclave.

Written to him in 1997, Mandela who had returned from prison after 27 years, lauded Olawepo-Hashim for his support for the success of the Children Party in Cape Town organised for the youths and children, most of them from low socioeconomic status homes, who faced difficult, life-threatening challenges and diseases.

Then, Olawepo-Hashim was only building on his record of participation in emancipation and the fight for liberty at home, right from his school days at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

He was an anti-apartheid activist; he and three other student leaders of the university were clamped into the overcrowded Police cell in Lagos in April 1989 after an anti-apartheid protest.

The university authorities under the influence of the military authorities who were seeking to frustrate him had seized his certificate. The implication of this in a society that placed a great premium on certificates rather than skills was that he could neither find a job as a graduate in the private sector nor the public sector. He had to depend on his skills to survive.

Ironically, when the civil rule was restored in 1999, and he became a member of the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), his push for more democratic reforms along with other compatriots met a brick wall.

However, consistent with his pedigree and antecedents, Olawepo-Hashim has built a reputation for greatness in the private sector and the polity, where he had canvassed an alternative route to national recovery, based on altruism and patriotism, until he teamed up with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ploughing back to society has been a pastime for the entrepreneur. Olawepo-Hashim has extended a duty of care to the needy and indigent, based on his love for humanity. The Gbenga Hashim Foundation, recently granted N20 million to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kwara State, constructed drainage and graded roads. It also granted N10 million to SMEs in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A devoted Christian, the birthday boy woke up with a private worship to God at 5:00 am, and an online worship coordinated by Mama Oreva and the Covenant Altar of Worship team at 7:30 am Nigeria time in Abuja.

His beloved mother also sent her prayers. More prayers and felicitations came from his children, sisters, brothers, in-laws, friends, bankers, lawyers, political associates, and online followers.

In Barcelona, Olawepo-Hashim had lunch with Vincent  Geuneau, his French business partner; Mrs. Helen Brume, a director at AfreximBank, Cairo; and Mrs Begonia Rubo Saiz, ex-Spanish diplomat and former European Commission official, who has joined his team as Senior Advisor, Global Cooperation.

Lunch at Circulo revealed an ambiance.  The ageless club is still maintaining its original setting, underscoring a beautiful tale of maintenance culture and dedication to the spirit of private enterprise.

A twist of history was added to the celebration as Vincent and Peter Hertog, his Deuch business partner, presented a personal letter of Mandela purchased at an Auction in Europe to him. The duo knew Mandela as one of his heroes, and that he had also been named prisoner of conscience in Africa, three years after Mandela was so named by the Amnesty International in 1989.

Remarkably, Olawepo-Hashim also got a valuable note from his daughter, Ifeoluwa, who graduated in England in Law last year, and is currently writing her practicing examination.

“I am grateful to everyone who sent messages and gifts. God bless you all and all my online followers.

To God be all the Glory,” he said.

Born in Yelwa, Yauri, Kebbi State, on June 28, 1965, Olawepo-Hashim started exhibiting leadership qualities in high school. In 1984, he was elected President of the Dramatic Society and later appointed Health Prefect at the Cherubim and Seraphim College, Ilorin. In 1986 at Kwara College of Technology, he was elected General Secretary of the Youth Solidarity in Southern Africa in Nigeria (YUSSAN) and was active in the anti-apartheid movement. He was a member of the Local Organising Committee of the ‘Massive Freedom at 70 Nelson Mandela Concert,’ held at the University Lagos. He was elected Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in July 1988.

In May–June 1989, he was part of the leadership of the anti-SAP and pro-democracy uprising organised by the National Association of Nigerian Students.

Olawepo-Hashim was clamped into detention for four months in solitary confinement under the Detention of Persons Decree No. 2 of 1984 as amended. It was detention without trial.

He was released after an epic legal battle, led by his counsel, the late President of the Nigerian Bar Association Alao Aka-Bashorun, and an international campaign coordinated by the International Union of Students, World Federation of Democratic Youth, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch.

Amnesty International declared him a ‘Prisoner of conscience’ in 1989.

The Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim Foundation yesterday gave out about N20 million to over 386 small scale entrepreneurs in Kwara State.

Founder Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim explained that his mission is to give back to the society.

He said: “I have been doing this for decades. I have a passion to make society better. It is not about having a deep pocket, but about commitment and passion to help people just as God has also helped me.”

The former presidential candidate admonished the beneficiaries to put the grant into good use instead of lavishing it on frivolities and liabilities.

“Don’t eat the seed, plant and nurture it, to produce more fruits to better your lives, so that you too can empower people. Nigeria was once a productive nation, producing clothes, cars, pharmaceuticals, etc., we must go back to the old and glorious path. We can start by these small steps.
