Dream  start  for Solskjaer as Besiktas hammer  Athletic in Europa League

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enjoyed a dream start to life as Besiktas coach as his new team powered to a 4-1 Europa League win over Athletic Bilbao.

Besiktas were outside the top 24 places in the standings before kick-off but moved into the knockout round berths after a brilliant second-half display.

Solskjaer was back on the bench for the first time since being sacked by Manchester United in November 2021.

“Since we started working with the players, we’ve worked on confidence,” said the Norwegian.

“Football is about feeling good. We got everything we wanted tonight. We worked together as a team. It’s easier to win when you work hard and work smart.”

Previously unbeaten Bilbao remain second in the table, level on points with leaders Lazio.

Besiktas took the lead in the 17th  minute as Milot Rashica finished off a flowing counter-attack with a fine strike into the top corner.

The visitors levelled on the stroke of half-time through Unai Gomez, but Rashica restored Besiktas’ advantage on the hour mark.

Rafa Silva’s strike with 13 minutes remaining and Joao Mario’s injury-time penalty added further gloss to the score line.

Solskjaer was named permanent Besiktas coach last weekend, replacing Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst who was sacked at the end of November.

  • Pogba remains at Man. Utd – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has “no doubt” midfielder Paul Pogba will stay at the club this summer.

The France World Cup winner missed United’s final pre-season game, a penalty-shootout win over AC Milan in the International Champions Cup.

But Solskjaer said Pogba, who did not travel to Cardiff for the match, was not risked due to a back strain.

“I wasn’t expecting him [to travel],” he said.

“I spoke to him after training and he didn’t feel right. It’s not an injury, it’s just some pain. I wasn’t going to risk anything.”

Reports claimed Pogba failed to make the trip to Cardiff in an attempt to force a move to Real Madrid.

Solskjaer also confirmed the £80m signing of Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire is set to be announced “very soon”.

  • De Gea to start for Man United at Huddersfield – Solskjaer

David De Gea will start for Manchester United at Huddersfield on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

De Gea will play after No. 2 keeper Sergio Romero suffered an injury in training, removing a potential selection headache for United manager Solskjaer.

The Spain international has made mistakes in his last five games, including a high-profile error during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but Solskjaer’s possible selection dilemma no longer applies after Romero picked up a knee problem.

“He [De Gea] will play,” Solskjaer told a news conference on Friday

“Sergio was injured on Thursday so didn’t train, tweaked his knee, and David has been training well this week.

“David is confident and looking forward to the next two games. He wants to prove how good a goalkeeper he is. He has got all my confidence.”

De Gea is one of a number of senior United players whose futures are uncertain as the season comes to a conclusion.

He will enter the final year of his contract in the summer, and has been linked with a £90 million move to Paris Saint-Germain.

There are also doubts about Juan Mata, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly, while Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia are set to leave on free transfers.

Solskjaer’s overhaul will be complicated if United are consigned to the Europa League — a fate that could be confirmed this weekend — but he is convinced the club will remain attractive to potential signings even without Champions League football.

“In the long-term planning we have to think about being in the Champions League next year because we’ve got a chance,” he said.

“We might not be, and you’d be surprised how many players’ agents have been touting their players, telling us that their players would love to be a part of Man United in the future.

“That’s the lure of Man United, because they know the potential and size of the club.

“Yes, we’re having a tough time at the moment. We’ve had a few seasons that we’ve not got up to the standards we expect, but it’s up to me and the club to change it as quick as possible.

“If it’s a season without the Champions League, who knows, but players still want to come to Man United and you would be surprised by the names that you get asked.”

Solskjaer is pressing ahead with United’s summer recruitment while the club continues to search for a technical director.

Sources have told ESPN FC that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward hopes to make an appointment by the beginning of next season, leaving Solskjaer to lead the overhaul.

“I’ll have a final say if a player comes in or goes out,” Solskjaer said. “We’ve got regular meetings. I’m happy with the way it’s going, and we’re supposed to sign 250 players because you are all writing about players we should sign.

“Hopefully we can get players in that you haven’t written about as well – you never know.”

  • De Gea will return to form – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says David de Gea has the strength of character to rebound from a slew of mistakes in recent weeks and has no intention of dropping the goalkeeper for the final two games of the season.

The Spaniard’s latest error came in Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Chelsea.

United had gone ahead through Juan Mata but Chelsea equalised when De Gea weakly parried Antonio Rudiger’s effort into the path of Marcos Alonso, who tucked the ball in.

De Gea has made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes in recent games but Solskjaer says the goalkeeper cannot take the blame for the team’s struggles.

“I don’t have any worries about him because he’s a strong character,” Solskjaer told British media. “He knows he could have had that shot but that’s football.”

The result leaves United sixth in the league on 65 points and dented their hopes of securing a top-four finish. They sit three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with two games left.

“With David, he’s been in the spotlight for right reasons for so long and now he’s going through a period where he feels he could have done better,” Solskjaer added.

“But there’s no chance any of us will point fingers because he’s saved us so many times. I’ll speak to David as I’ve done when he’s played well… he’s not the reason we’re sixth.”

United’s last two games of the season are against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City.

  • Top four finish difficult now, says Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted it will be “difficult” for Manchester United to finish in the top four after being held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea.

Another David De Gea error meant United had to settle for a point at Old Trafford on Sunday, leaving Solskjaer’s side sixth in the table and three points off the Champions League places with just two games remaining.

“If you look at the league table it’s going to be difficult,” Solskjaer told a news conference.

“It’s one of those days and we must dust ourselves down and win the next two. You never know as points are being dropped left, right and centre.

“You never know, we felt we needed to win this game.”

Solskjaer watched Marcos Alonso score Chelsea’s equaliser after De Gea’s mistake to cancel out Juan Mata’s opener after 11 minutes.

And there was further disappointment for the Norwegian, who saw Eric Bailly and Marcus Rashford go off injured in the second half.

Bailly left the stadium on crutches and wearing a leg brace and is unlikely to play again until next season.

“We strapped him [Rashford] up before the game and his shoulder got worse and worse,” said Solskjaer.

“Eric — it’s a bad injury but I’m sure we won’t see him again this season unfortunately.”

Rashford will be a doubt for the trip to Huddersfield on Sunday but Solskjaer insists De Gea is set to keep his place despite making a mistake leading to a goal for the fifth game in a row.

The United manager has Argentina No. 1 Sergio Romero to turn to but suggested De Gea would keep the gloves at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“No, I don’t have any worries about him,” said Solskjaer.

“He’s a strong character. There’s many different ways of getting back to your best performances and, of course, I’ll sit down and speak to David, as I’ve done when he’s played well, and he’s not the reason we’re sixth.

“David knows he could have done better with the goal, there’s no reason hiding that.

“But there’s no chance any of us will point fingers because he’s saved us so many times.”

  • Man City have set a new standard – Solskjaer

Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made no attempt to disguise the gulf in quality between his team and Manchester City, describing Pep Guardiola’s side as “the best team in the country” after they won 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match.

“They have set the standard in the last two seasons and I don’t know how many points they’ve taken.

“What Pep Guardiola has done with his players is remarkable and we are so close to it, in the vicinity so we feel it every day,” said the Norwegian.

Solskjaer had demanded his players react to their 4-0 loss to Everton on Sunday and United did begin the match with aggression, battling hard until City went ahead through Bernardo Silva in the 54th minute.

“We got a reaction and in the end we were beaten by a better team. But we got a reaction from fans and players and had a go.

“You can see the work rate was there, it wasn’t good enough though,” said the United boss.

“The players wanted to show they really care. The first half was positive; we were pleased at the break.

“Unfortunately, we conceded two sloppy goals in the second half that could have been avoided.

“Everyone can see what City has done over the last few years,” he said.

City strolled to victory in the second half with united flagging as they chased after a stream of precise passes from Guardiola’s side.

“There is a difference in quality. That is why they are top and we are where we are. They have set the standard. Living in Manchester we cannot be happy with that.

“It is up to us to close that gap and overtake them,” said Solskjaer.

“Today you can’t say that any of them didn’t run. You could see clearly an intent and focus. We just need to keep working on it,” he said.

United have lost seven of their last nine games in all competitions, a run of form which contrasts markedly with the positive start to Solskjaer’s reign in December.

A Champions League spot remains within their grasp, however, with United in sixth place, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who they play on Sunday.

“In the short term, we are still in the race for the top four and we know we must deliver a good performance against Chelsea,” said Solskjaer.

  • I am the right man for Manchester United – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is the right man to lead Manchester United’s revival despite a worrying dip in form that has threatened their top four hopes.

United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday on the back of six defeats in eight games including a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

“I would like to say I am but it’s not down to me to say that,” Solskjaer told a news conference on Tuesday.

“I’m confident in my team and myself to take this challenge on. It’s a big challenge and when I came in here I said I’m going to enjoy every single second. I don’t like losing but it’s a challenge when you go through bad results.”

Paul Pogba has branded Manchester United’s performance at Everton as “disrespectful” to all involved on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Goodison Park and the Frenchman did not hold back in his assessment of his, and the team’s, display.

“Losing a game is something really bad that we don’t want to [do] when we are in the race for the top four and losing 4-0 as well.

“Not to be disrespectful and I am not disrespectful on Everton, but the way we played and the performance of myself, of the team, of everyone is disrespectful. We didn’t respect ourselves, the club or the fans.

“I don’t want to be harsh with my words but we don’t want to look like we did because the body language was not good enough for this shirt.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said afterwards the performance of some players at Everton had been “embarrassing” while Solskjaer questioned whether they cared enough to represent the club.

Pogba revealed part of what the Norwegian had to say to the squad after the final whistle with the 26-year-old admitting the players were “angry with themselves.”

“We let the manager speak, the staff speaks and they spoke the truth,” he said.

“They said what happened in the game and it is not respectful for ourselves.

“What we did on the pitch is not respectful for the teammates, for the staff, for the people, for the kitman, for everyone.

“For their work, they put their life on us, the team and this club. What we showed on the pitch, we did not give them the joy back and that’s why we are angry with ourselves.

“We want to do better for sure and we have to. The reaction has to be there.”

United have the chance to put things right on Wednesday when title-chasing Manchester City visit Old Trafford.

Solskjaer and a selection of players apologized to the travelling fans at Goodison Park and Pogba insisted he would say sorry with a full-blooded performance in the derby.

“The only way to apologize to them is to give everything on the pitch, do our best, create chances, score goals, defend, work for the team and we can even lose games, but with a good performance and pride on the pitch,” said Pogba.

“That’s how we should apologize to the fans, just to give everything for us, for the club, for the shirt, for the teammates and for ourselves as well because it is us on the pitch and we cannot perform like we did.”

New York Red Bulls manager sporting director Denis Hamlett said rumors that Thierry Henry would take over as club manager are “false.”

In a brief statement released on Monday, Hamlett said: “Recent reports of Thierry Henry joining the New York Red Bulls are false.”

Unconfirmed reports over the last week have hinted that Henry, 41, would take over the reins at his former MLS club.

Red Bulls, under manager Chris Armas, have endured a difficult start to the season. After finishing top of the Eastern Conference last season, the club sits at 11th in the standings and have lost four for their first seven games.

After serving as assistant manager for Belgium at the 2018 World Cup, Henry had a disastrous three-month tenure at former club Monaco, winning four out of 20 games while in charge.

The ex-Arsenal and Barcelona striker played for NYRB from 2010-2014, scoring 51 goals in 122 MLS appearances.

  • Solskjaer: Utd won’t sign many players in summer

There won’t be major changes in the transfer market, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stated.

He said there is no “quick fix” to the club’s struggles.

“There will be new players coming in over summer but I don’t think you can expect six,” Solskjaer said.

“I don’t think any manager you ask would be in favour of that amount of change anyway.

“We want to rebuild but it is going to have to be gradual, over a few windows.

“We plan to be in the top four, we plan to be in the Champions League next season and we want players who can keep us in the Champions League and move us up the table. But we know there is not going to be a quick fix. We have to take it step by step.”

United have lost five out of their past seven matches and Solskjaer has warned any under-performing players they will be moved towards the exit.

“When I was given the job there was an understanding that we had to get Manchester United’s DNA back into the club and the team,” he added.

“That doesn’t mean I want to live in the past. It would be naive to tell players to do all the same things we did when I played. But I want to create a culture that we all believe in.

“When I played the manager trusted us and we took responsibility for our own careers.

“If anyone stepped out of bounds, they wouldn’t stay here long. That’s the way it has to be at a club like this.”

  • Solskjaer: Man United rebuild could take years

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted he faces a rebuilding job at Manchester United that may take years after a humbling Champions League exit to Barcelona.

United were out-classed by the Spanish giants, who eased to a 3-0 win at Camp Nou thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi.

It stretches their wait for the Champions League semifinal to eight years and Solskjaer says he has work to do to get his team back to that level.

“We know there’s work to be done,” said Solskjaer.

“I’ve said all along this isn’t going to change overnight and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level of Barcelona.

“We’re on with the job and we’ve spoken to the players about it as well.

“We need to create an environment of top, world-class attitude every single day. We’ve got a lot of good players to work with but as I have said, we have a rebuilding job. It started with coaches, players and of course one or two additions in the summer.”

Looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, United started well against Barcelona and could have taken the lead after just 24 seconds when Marcus Rashford hit the bar.

But any hope was extinguished when Messi scored twice in four minutes in the first half — the second squirming under David De Gea’s body and into the net.

“That’s unfortunate with goalkeepers, when you make an error it can get highlighted and that’ll be remembered,” said Solskjaer.

“He made some fantastic saves and his contribution to the team is good but sometimes that happens in football.”

Both Rashford and Scott McTominay had early chances as United started on the front foot but after Messi scored with Barcelona’s first two shots on target the tie was all but over.

Philippe Coutinho added a stunning third in the second half, curling a shot beyond De Gea from 25 yards.

“We did well to get here and the quality of their finishing was absolutely outstanding,” said Solskjaer.

“We started well in the first five minutes and we felt we’ve got something here and then in four minutes they scored two goals.

“The attitude was right but we were fighting against a good team.

“Messi is an exceptional talent. Him and Cristiano [Ronaldo] have been the best players in the world for the last decade and he showed why we think that and why this team have won so many Champions Leagues.

“If you give him space and time around the goal he’ll create and score goals. He’s a fantastic player.” (ESPN)

  • Solskjaer dreams table turning miracle at the Nou Camp

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he does not believe in fate, but admits ‘sometimes things are meant to be’ as he gets ready to return to the Nou Camp this week.

Twenty years on from his dramatic injury-time winner in Barcelona that sealed Manchester United’s Treble, Solskjaer is hoping to mastermind another comeback.

His side are  1-0 down after losing the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford last week thanks to a Luke Shaw own goal

The United squad, including former boss Sir Alex Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill, arrived at Manchester airport on Monday morning having earlier driven into training.

Alexis Sanchez was named among United’s travelling contingent.

The Chilean has been sidelined for the last six weeks because of a knee injury, but has returned to bolster an attack that failed to register a shot on target in last week’s defeat at Old Trafford.

Midfielder Nemanja Matic and full back Matteo Darmian were also part of the 22-man squad heading out to Barcelona

On returning to the scene of the final in 1999, where he and Teddy Sheringham swung the game in injury time, Solskajer admitted to ESPN: ‘I don’t believe in fate but I do believe that you get what you deserve.

‘Sometimes things are meant to be if you really go it.

‘I’m not the type to think: “This makes me proud.” I will feel the butterflies, I will be excited. I cannot wait to get going because it’s the biggest stage.

‘It’s against the best club of the last 10 or 15 years. Since [Pep] Guardiola took over they have been absolutely brilliant.’ The United manager believes he can replicate his Treble success now he is at the wheel at Old Trafford.
