    Day Oliha dared death-Kalu

Departed Super Eagles midfielder Thompson Oliha exhibited so much energy that former Abia state governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu believed the star could not die young.

Eulogising Oliha, Kalu recalled an incident in 1988 when the player, starring for Iwuanyanwu Nationale [now Heartland] was unconscious for nearly 24 hours.

“It was at the June 17 Stadium Constantine, Algeria. Iwuanyanwu were away to Entente Petroles Setif of Algeria in the CAF Champion’s Cup Grand-Finale. Oliha came in for Law Ukegbu in the 65th minute and played vigorously . The Algerians went after him,and in five minutes, he was injured. “Oliha had seven stitches on his face and was unconscious thereafter. As soon as he came to, the young man was more concerned about the Cup loss than his health,” the ex-governor said.

Kalu again drove down memory lane in his tribute to Oliha who was called Tommy by friends.

“From Owerri, he moved to Abidjan to join Africa Sports in 1992. Same year, with Gabriel Okolosi, they won the Africa Winners Cup beating Vital’o of Burundi 5-1 aggregate. Oliha emerged the second highest scorer with three goals, behind Okolosi’s eight. On January 10,1993 the duo became the first to win the Super Cup,” Kalu added.

“Oliha was so strong and friendly. At Senegal ’92, few hours to the semis between Nigeria and Ghana, he bumped into his Iwuanyanwu team mate and Black Star Edward Ansah in their Dakar hotel. ‘Eddie Murphy’, Oliha screamed as they embraced, talking less about their clash. I am sure his friends all over Africa will miss him, just like all of us,” Kalu said.

    Chukwu scolds Nigeria over Oliha

Former Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu is unhappy that the nation’s government has not honoured its pledge to late midfielder, Thompson Oliha after helping the Super Eagles win the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994.

Oliha, who died on Sunday, was promised a house by the Nigeria government at the time but the pledge was not redeemed.

Chukwu has now spoken about the situation which he described as “not too good.”

“To be honest, this is not too good. He has not received the house he was promised for helping Nigeria win the Nations Cup in 1994. Now he has died and I don’t know if it is not too late for him to be given that house,” Chukwu, an assistant coach to Clemens Westerhof in 1994, told supersport.com.

Chukwu then went on to extol the qualities of the late midfielder who made 31 appearances and scored two goals for Nigeria between 1988 and 1994.

“Oliha was a perfect example in training and matches as he was always hard working but found the time to exchange banter with players and coaches alike.

“He only left for Europe after the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations but even when he was based in Nigeria, he was still a first-choice as the Europe-based players found it almost impossible to outwit him in training and matches.

“It is a sad loss and we will miss him greatly,” Chukwu concluded.

Oliha began his professional football education in 1985 at Bendel Insurance before proceeding to Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC) in 1988.

Four years later, he joined Ivorian club, Africa Sports before spending two short seasons in Europe with Maccabi Ironi Ashdod (in Israel) and Antalyaspor (in Turkey).

How Thompson Oliha died at Ilorin was yesterday revealed by his wife through David Aigboivo, the operational Director, Association of professional footballers.

Aigboivo said the wife called around 3.57am that her husband work up to use of the rest room when suddenly he screamed. She rushed in only to discover that he was down and no life in him any more.

Also, for fear of what may happen to the aged parents of late Thompson Oliha, if they get the news of the death of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Oliha, both aged between 70 to 90 years, were yesterday moved from Thompson house to another family home.

When the mother asked why they are been relocated, Thompson eldest brother said Thompson wanted to finish the renovation work in the house hence the need for relocation.

The four flats building owned by Thompson was gutted by fire three years ago is gradually been renovated by Thompson before he died on Sunday.

Family members who were in a close-door meeting when our reporter visited Thompson home refused to discuss anything with journalists but promised that when they returned from illorin, the media will be briefed appropriately.

Some of his close friends who do not want their names in print told SportingLife that Thompson problems were compounded from his excessive drinking and smoking without eating.

“You see my brother, family problems can also compound things for you. All this contributed to Thompson ‘wahala’ after his active days,” a friend said.

“When we played football match for Oshiomhole last year and another one in Warri, we did not allow him to play because of the condition. We don’t want somebody to die inside the pitch. So, my brother, I was not surprised when heard that it was heart failure. May his soul rest in peace.”

    Oshiomhole mourns Thompson Oliha

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has mourned the death of ex-midfielder of the Super Eagles, Mr Thompson Olisa, saying the state has lost a worthy ambassador.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPC), Mr Peter Okhiria, Comrade Oshiomhole said: “I am saddened by the news of the sudden death of ace footballer, Mr. Thompson Oliha. His death is no doubt a big blow not only to the sports family but to all of us who watched him display intrinsic skills on the football pitch.

“His exploits in the Bendel Insurance Football Club and his quality contributions to the African Cup of Nations winning team of 1994 are forever etched in our memories. Indeed, Edo State has lost an outstanding son, a worthy ambassador who projected the image of the state on a positive note.

“His death has robbed our state and indeed Nigeria of a patriot who gave his all in his chosen field by bringing honour to the nation.

“Even as we mourn his death at such a young age, we are consoled that he lived a life worthy of emulation and that his contributions to the nation remain indelible.
